Work in progress on Mightypions submission.

I'm going to throw Nicolai's hat into the ring. Nicolai is a Human (Varisian) Wizard (Diviner: Foresight school) who will eventually go into the Harrower Prestige Class (probably around level 8 or so).

As a disclaimer: I've played Nicolai in this AP several times now, none of them getting any farther than near the end of the second book, but I am capable of keeping Player knowledge separate from Character knowledge.

Question for the GM: Are the two extra Campaign Backgrounds from Varisia, Birthplace of Legends (Dockside Avenger and Varisian Immunity) allowed to be selected, or would you prefer we stick with the originals only?

She answered this already, I think.

GM Elfriede wrote:

Hi there. I'd prefer you use the proper campaign traits, simply because this AP does a good job of tying the party together early with them. They're a little weird, because the Varisia: Birthplace of Legends traits seem to be lumped in with them on Archives of Nethys. Here's the list of ones that are from the Player's Guide, if you don't want to download it.

Betrayed either Hungry for Revenge or Reformed Criminal
Drug Addict either Addicted Friend or Personal Addiction
Framed either Dropout or Family Honor
Love Lost either All Alone or Orphaned
Missing Child either Missing Sibling or Missing Son or Daughter
Unhappy Childhood either Religious or Tortured

Merrick Talbar - Human Monk (Ki Mystic)
Alias of Therenger

Profile nearly complete - just need to buy equipment, and this is a Monk, so that should be easy. Highlights below.

Appearance:
Average height but muscular, "Merrick" was a late bloomer but works tirelessly on his conditioning. He is often caked with grime from manual labor and rarely bathes except in the river or the sea. His dark hair is usually tied in the back, revealing a determined face with an angular jaw and beset with blue-gray eyes. He wears the stain of a tormented youth and looks older than his nineteen years, perhaps wiser.

Personality:
Despite his lengthy childhood trauma, Merrick is typically amenable and through his own experience he has learned to recognize pain in others. Going from wealth into poverty and having gained employment of his own merit, he values hard work and people who do it, but does not judge harshly those who do not, regardless of the reason. He is naturally pragmatic and doesn't think too much. He likes the company of others but is not quick-witted and when engaged he often considers his words overlong, making any conversation with him a stilted affair, but what he says is often well-intentioned if not reasonable. In general, he's agreeable except where prudence fails: his hatred for Gaedren Lamm.

Combat Stats:
AC:16 T:16 FF:14
Hit Points: 9
Initiative: +8
Perception: +7
BAB: 0 Spd: 30
Fort:3 Ref:4 Will:5
Unarmed Strike: 1d6
Flurry of Blows: +3/+3, 1d6+4
Stunning Fist: 1x/day, Fort DC14

Bot Me!:
Rd 1: Win Initiative, move into melee vs biggest enemy, Stunning Fist attack
Rd 2: Swift action to activate Pummeling Style, Flurry of Blows attack
Rd 3: 5' step as necessary, repeat Flurry of Blows attack

Background in Brief:
Merrick's father, Davos Falconbridge, was a wealthy merchant lord, cruel to his peers and workers alike. Davos craved only wealth and the power and influence he could buy with it. He was positioning himself to be a future King of Korvosa, and he had many enemies throughout the city. His son Merrick had all of those enemies but none of their fear. He was bullied mercilessly until one day a stranger named Gaedren Lamm lit a flame inside him with a simple notion: revenge.

He was taken on as a student by Master Ip-Xi Han, a Ki Mystic living in The Shingles. During this time he learned martial techniques and when to use them. He was generous to the poor and defended himself but the need for vengeance had drifted away. That is until Gaedren Lamm found him again. Lamm twisted Merrick's mind, throwing fuel on the fire of resentment for his father. That led to Lamm killing Merrick's parents while he unwittingly stood watch outside his home.

With everything in his former life destroyed, Merrick returned to Master Ip-Xi and found solace in training. When Ip-Xi could no longer afford to care for the growing boy, Merrick found work at the docks and eventually aboard trade ships. He discovered balance in training and labor, but in the depths of his soul he allowed the flame of revenge to stay lit. One day he would kill Gaedren Lamm.

Nice to see you back GM Elfriede. This sounds fun. I will get something together for it.

I switched to Lost Love: All Alone for Ersica's campaign trait and updated her backstory to reflect it.

I'm looking to submit a Dawnflower Dervish (Bard) with the Unhappy Childhood (Religious) campaign trait. The goal is a mixture of skills, melee damage, some ranged tricks (via the Sound Striker archetype), support/healing, and some hope and positivity (cause a devotee of Sarenrae should do that sort of thing).

My intent would be to be a solid fifth PC, providing what is needed to help push a party of four to success. The PC should be able to handle traps (though not magical ones, strictly, without Trapfinding), help with healing and buffs, and be solid in melee with ranged options when necessary. With a bit of effort I could also handle the role of Face.

I will work on an Alias, character sheet, and introduction over the next couple of days.

Rough draft for Bellinda Swiftfoot (Halfling Dawnflower Dervish/Sound Striker Bard) is here. I've got background and such to write still, but that will have to be later. She won't be the most forward, as I couldn't afford the Face skills, but I hope she looks mechanically solid!

Hey GM Elfriede for reasons your aware of, my gaming que has gotten much busier. I feel I should remove myself from this recruitment and focus on my new responsibilities.

Thank you for running the game, good luck and good gaming everyone.

No problem, Robert Henry. Thanks for helping us out with S&S.

Hello, this is Malinor's submission of Garret, a sniper rogue. I also played as Thraag in the Hags campaign.

Background:
Garret is an average sized halfling. He is clean shaven and has blonde hair with blue eyes. He has learned to blend into the background and often goes unnoticed as he moves about Korvosa.

Garrett is a native to the city of Korvosa. He was raised by his parents, Abe and Olya Goodbarrel. Abe was a local shop clerk selling tools and hardware to look craftsmen and DYI homeowners. One morning a human came in and stole several items. Being a small halfling, Abe was not able to catch the thief and instead reported the theft as quickly as possible to local guardsmen. The next day he was pleased to see a group of Hellknights arrive at the shop to investigate the theft. Thinking they were there to aid him, Abe cheerfully answered the questions and identified a crowbar that had the mark of the shop as either the item that was stolen or one close to it. It was with great surprise then that Abe found himself in manacles and taken by the Hellknights.

It turned out that the previous evening the tools were used to break into a house where a woman was killed. The crowbar and a hammer from the theft were found on the scene. A witness claimed that a small figure, a halfling, gnome or small dwarf, was seen fleeing the scene. It was quickly determined that Abe had taken the items himself and filed a false report to hide what he was doing. Abe insisted he was innocent, but he could not prove where he ws sufficiently to avoid prison. After the trial was over Garrett tracked down the witness and spoke to him. During the talk he managed to twist the man around with his words and the man divulged that he had not really seen anything, but instead he was paid off to lie. Realizing what he said the man clammed up and ran off.

Garrett now knew something had happened and began investigating what had truely happened that night and who was being framing his father.

*grumblegrumble* Why is coming up with a name for the character always the hard part? *grumblegrumble*

Still working on the guy, of course, but may need to sleep on it for a night or two to replenish my creative spark...

Greeting, GM Elfriede. This is my submission for your game - I hope you like her!

----------------------

Name: Bellinda Swiftfoot

Gender: Female
Race: Halfling

Character Level: 1
Class: Bard (Dawnflower Dervish, Sound Striker archetypes)

Alignment: Lawful Good
Deity: Sarenrae

Role: Melee Striker, Infiltrator

Age: 30
Height: 2'11"
Weight: 30 lbs

Appearance: Bellinda Swiftfoot is a pretty, sun-tanned halfling woman with curly brown hair kept in a frizzy bun on the back of her head. She's always smiling, generally softspoken, and moves with grace and confidence.

Personality:
In spite of her talents and the encouragement of the clergy of Sarenrae, Bellinda is somewhat anxious about speaking in public. She's not shy with small groups, but if she must perform for a crowd she dances - never singing or speaking.

Other than this bit of stage-fright, Bellinda is deeply passionate about her goddess, enthusiastic about redemption-when-possible and quick-mercy-when-redemption-isn't-possible, and healing those in need. She likes quietly helping people and isn't afraid of much.

Traits (including RP-noteworthy features:
Vagabond Child - Bellinda doesn't remember her parents. She knows they were sailors on one of the many ships manned by halfling crews in the Korvosa harbor, but somehow she ended up on her own, a little street urchin before she could even read. Sometimes this bothers her and she wonders about the family she might have had. Most of the time, however, she realized she needed to eat and that meant stealing. Early on she discovered she had a knack for picking locks and sneaking into places through small holes, so she did that.

Unhappy Childhood (Religious) - Gaedren Lamm found Bellinda when she stumbled upon a job his "Lambs" were doing. However, they weren't having any luck and she was small enough to help get the job done. He "adopted" her on the spot, much to her later chagrin. After years of being under his thumb she was shown kindness by a Sarenite and given a small holy symbol as a gift. It was the first gift she'd ever received, and Bellinda cherished it until Gaedren Lamm found it one night, beat her, and destroyed it. The next morning she was gone, having run away to the Temple of Sarenrae in the Heights District where she begged for a chance to serve. The church gave her one, eventually leading to her training as a Dawnflower Dervish Bard.

Resilient - Gaedren Lamm fed Bellinda junk all too often, and since she had no choice except to eat or starve she ate it. Her gut is tougher than expected and she's only rarely sick, having had all the bad illnesses already as a little halfling girl.

Fleet of Foot (Racial Characteristic) - It's hard being a street urchin, and being able to run faster than your pursuer makes a difference. It didn't take long for Bellinda to start practicing, even racing the other children in Lamm's Lambs for fun. She's faster than expected for a halfling as a result, and takes great pleasure in that fact.

Underfoot Dodger (Racial Characteristic) - Growing up under the thumb of Gaedren Lamm and used by him to commit all kinds of petty crime, Bellinda learned quickly that one of her best options when being chased was to weave between the legs of the big folk in crowded places - she was harder to chase and could usually get away more easily. She's spent so long practicing this skill that it stuck and she never shies away from the advantages a crowd offers her.

Drawback:
Anxious - Too often Gaedren Lamm made it clear that Bellinda wasn't to be seen or heard, but that he especially didn't want to hear her talk. Her high-pitched voice and kind-heart weren't welcome and she received more than a few bruises from the man before she learned to stay quiet. Now she has internalized that trait to her detriment...

Character Sheets: Here

I've fixed up Pendleton's crunch and he's ready to be submitted.

@Bellinda, there's a possible relationship thread between us if you are willing. Merrick is a sailor by trade. It's possible he's heard rumors of a halfling-run ship that disappeared. He's also not particularly eloquent, and would not make anyone feel intimidated talking with him, and he's generally friendly but there's a sadness in his eyes, like every child whose life was affected by Gaedren Lamm. He spends most of his time in-city in Old Korvosa and would have developed a small amount of status for his modest but earnest philanthropy. Merrick is a pretty dull knife and you could have swindled him in the past, but he wouldn't hold it against you.

Which version of the Elephant in the Room is active? The most recent, that is to say, 3.0?

Merrick and Rodrigo are have both been Martial artists, before Rodrigo got clobbered in an underground arena after Lamm poisoned him to manipulate the fight, also addicting him with Kesh.
It could have been Merrick who clobbered him, not knowing that Rodrigo was poisoned and drugged.

They would not start on good terms, but if both are selected they would be a pair of frontliners that could eventually bond. Such stories can be fun to RP.

Merrick may know that Rodrigo disappeared for months after his lost fight, but turned up again recently, doing security for an Alchemist.

@Merrick - I’d be interested in exploring that more. Nice catch!

@MontCestMoi: I'd only accessed This Version, but I'm checking out the 3.0 Elephant over the next day or two. Let me get back to you on this, okay?

@Bellinda, Rodrigo, and Merrick: I'm fine with you tying together your backstories. It sounds like a cool way to know someone before the game starts. I'm still likely going to be evaluating my choices independently of each other first, though, just to be fair to those who don't connect with others.

@Everyone: Keep 'em coming! I'll be reviewing submissions soon, when I have some time, so I can ask any questions I need to. Thanks for all the interest!

The third version is more polished, covers only the same material, and actually undoes some of the earlier changes. The most obvious is they brought PBS back, but still removed it from the pre-requisites for everything else, making it a dead-end option to follow Precise Shot.

Risky Strike is a free equivalent for basically every feat variant in the game to trade Attack Bonus for Damage. Defensive Stance replaces Combat Expertise pretty directly, but for free.

Naturally!

@hustonj or GM Elfriede, is there a ruling as to whether Crane Style can be used with Defensive Stance similar to Fighting Defensively? Specifically, would it reduce the penalty to attack rolls (to 0)? I'm not finding anything online but my sense is no, it would not.

@GM Elfriede - totally understood. That seems the only fair way to proceed.

@Merrick - at this point Bellinda has turned over a completely new leaf and is no longer criminally involved at all. She's actually Lawful Good, her philosophy having turned strongly against the chaos and crime of which she was once a part. That said, if it had happened when she was still with the Lambs a swindling would make sense.

What I like more is the idea that they might both be friendly now as a result of them both making efforts to help the poor and downtrodden in the city. Bellinda isn't a divine PC, but the Sarenites really like their scimitar-wielders and bards are in their clergy. She isn't a member of their priesthood, but she is devoted enough that I considered taking the Deific Obedience feat and/or might multiclass into Paladin someday. Her efforts towards charity could easily intersect with Merrick's.

@GM that is completely fine and fair.

Rods main things are being a prize fighter, disliking Lamm rather heavily and being good at alchemy, due to being security for a "unconventional" alchemist.

I think there was a character who was a drug hunter?

Ersica even has "All Alone" as a trait so yeah, 'nuff said. Fine with me.

If it's not a problem I think I'm going to list EitR abilities like Risky Strike and Defensive Stance in the feats section of Ersica's profile so I can keep track of options. I haven't played with EitR rules much so I could easily forget otherwise.

hustonj wrote:

Yeah, not sure why I thought Defensive Stance would interact with Crane Style like Fighting Defensively. Clearly different tools.

Tbh, I was unaware how dumb a Mutagenic Maulers AC can get at level 1 under these rules. 25 is doable, 24 is doable by just getting crane style (which brawlers qualify for).
Math is 10 (base) +2 (dex) +4 (lamellar armor) +2 (heavy shield) +2 (natural AC bonus from mutagen) +1 (dodge) +3 (fighting defensively with crane style)=24.

Gonna not get into crane style for now and shore up weak saves instead.

I'll offer up
Declan, Half-Elf Spiritualist(Phantom Blade)/Magus(Black Blade)*.
Trait: Framed(Dropout), Self-taught Scholar
Drawback: Tainted Spirit,

Backstory:
Struggling to complete a magical education without assistance is a daunting task. Getting one's hands on the materials needed without assistance is almost insurmountable. That is, unless one is willing to tread where some would not. Of course, one does run the risk of capture trying to steal material (that imp familiar ratted you out!), near-sacrifice by an undoubtedly evil pair of cultists to some unnamed denizen of the lower planes(they seemed so nice until the knives came out, too...), and filling in the rest with what knowledge the church of Pharasma while you healed up(good folk, if a bit too serene at times for your tastes). The application of your magical theory seems sound more or less, it just needs to be furthered.

After all, despite everything, you have to have a positive attiude. Those priests may have been on to something, but that's not you, at least not yet. Also, it might be just a bit foolish, but giving that detestable individual Lamm a bit of payback for altering the trajectory of your life seems only fair, right? It would certainly be something to keep smiling about.

*Determined randomly at level up

Oooh, another list post!

@MontCestMoi and others: Let's go with the 3.0 Elephant in the Room rules.

@Merrick: Have you had your Defensive Stance question answered?

A question for GM Elfriede: I'm writing background; what year are you setting this in?

@GM Elfriede, yes, actually I slept on it and realized it was a dumb question.

Hi, been following this for a while but wanted to make sure my slate was clear before submitting a character. Things are very clear, and I'd be ecstatic if I could be considered for a CotCT game, it's one of those APs I've never played through.

That said, here is my profile for Sujani. I'll do up a proper backstory in the next day or so, but essentially he's a Vudrani expatriate from Golquila- he traveled to Korvosa after signing on to a House Arkona shipping delivery as a sailor/guard. Given a bit of a hedonistic nature, and a desire to explore (he's originally from the mountains, traveled to the coast to get a taste of a different life, and now is further away from home than he could ever have imagined and loving it) he became enthralled with the cosmopolitan life in Korvosa and left the shipping life behind in port. This didn't turn out too well for him- his campaign trait is Personal Addiction, so a little bit of hedonism went a bit too far. He's broken the habit and back in fighting form, and looking to stop Gaedren Lamm from wrecking other lives.

Long term planning: I imagine I'll take a level or two of monk or brawler somewhere down the line, monk most likely, which plays in part to show that his isolated mountain background is still with him, but mechanically woul also allow me to take Master of Many Styles and have some Fun With Combat Styles. Ultimately I want to see if I can get Kirin Style to work and put his intelligence to use.

He's lightly armored and Dex-based, so not a tank, but I imagine he'll do well dual wielding kukris as a mobile striker. Also, he's capable of being a main/backup Knowledge Check Guy.

I've decided on literally no equipment. Merrick has fully embraced the clothes on my back, will travel philosophy. He may acquire a sack for bread when necessary.

Also, it is my intention to rp Merrick's awakening to Ki Mystic and Qinggong abilities when it happens at lvl 3/4.

@Sujani, you mentioned Monk and piqued my interest. I can save you a feat; you have Power Attack but EitR gives you Risky Strike for free.

If we both happen to be selected, Merrick will happily serve as a mentor when you're ready to dip into Monk.

@Sujani
Fellow addict? Brawler also works :).
The interesting thing about it is that you can swap your current styles via martial flexibility.
Also, damage can get quite serious because brawlers have easier ways into weapon training close (which includes unarmed strikes).

Power Attack is one of the free feats that HeroLab plugged in with the World is Square rules turned on, so I haven't 'spent' anything on it. If there's a discontinuity between the Herolab implementation of EitR and the one the game will actually use, I'll poke and prod until things are accurate.

@Rodrigo: It really is a hard choice between dipping Brawler and Monk; even a low level use of Martial Flexibility gives a lot of options for a character working around combat style feats, but the multiple styles at once that Master of Many Styles gets is also super tempting. The thing is, he wouldn't need to know a TON of styles; I don't see him doing unarmed strike much, so it's just the limited subset of styles that would work well with a knife fighter that I'd need to worry about. I'd probably play it by ear and see how he plays as I level up before making any choices.

Rodrigo is mutagenic mauler, which is an unusual brawler because he trades out martial flexibility for mutagens, and doesnt get the brawlers AC bonus, which means he takes no penalties for being in heavy armor, provided he can get the proficiencies.

That's...a lot of drugs. Hahaha.

I'll be reviewing submissions this weekend so I can ask questions about characters before the final countdown. Don't panic if you're not submitted yet, though. I know there's a lot of people still interested.

For those of us lurking and interested, is there anything you are looking for specifically, GM Elfriede? IC interactions, dialogue, etc…?

Nicolai sits down at a nearby table and pulls a well worn deck of cards from his satchel. After shuffling the deck he begins to lay them out on the table in three rows of three. "Care to know your future? For the low cost of three coppers I will tell you" he winks conspiratorially "For a silver I'll even tell you the truth."

This is going to be MontCestMoi's application, but I made the mistake of writing directly into the text field of the profile, and lost about an hour and a half of noodling, so I'll be actually doing this tomorrow or Sunday. Human Ranger archer who's looking for his Missing Child (Nephew).
