"Tempest, fall back!"
Brother MacLaren looks to Veronica for a second.
The Captains calls the orders on board. But we are not on board so she's just another voice.
And would Tempest even listen to her?

"Sorry, Tempest. We need you."
He takes his giant mug and places it over Tempest's head. Then he rather roughly shoves her around the corner of the lodge.
Reposition: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Moves her 10'.

Finally, he moves back.

Veronica gives a small chuckle as she sees Mac drag Tempest around with his oversized mug. But the smile doesn't reach her eyes, which remain focused on the mass of buzzing insects coming menacingly at the group.

"Mac is right, we need Tempest. Her lightning is our most effective weapon against those things." Veronica looks to Ellie by her side as she grabs another acid flask, with a look of grim determination on her eyes.

"I'll try to distract the bugs, and see if I can buy her a bit more time for another casting. There's a healing potion in my pack if they bring me down."

She tries to give Ellie a reassuring smile, before running forward towards the swarm, hoping it decides to feed on the closest target instead of pursuing Tempest, while lobbing another flask at the group of bugs.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 3 + 1 = 22
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 *1,5=10

As MacLaren, undignifiedly drags the still bleeding Tempest back, Veronica, agreeing with the cleric, steps forward tossing another flask of acid. The ceramic container shatters, splattering acid up into the swarm. The remaining bugs fly up away from the difficult meal and scatter to the wind.

Brother MacLaren immediately uses his last Channel to stop the bleeding and heal Tempest.

He holds his mug aloft and says "Cheers and good health!"

That also gets Tucci, Ellie, and Veronica to full HP.

"I already di- Wha- GYAAH!" Tempest reels from the momentary feeling of being a sylph smoothie, long enough for Veronica to finish off the swarm and for MacLaren to channel a heal. She stands frozen, staring at the good Brother for a long moment, as a storm of conflicting emotions plays out across her face.

Finally, she takes a breath and sighs, "I appreciate the concern, and I don't necessarily mind the tactical movement. But was it REALLY necessary to put that thing on my head?!"

"Sorry," he says, and sounds as if he means it.
"I had an alchemist's fire in the other hand, and worried that if I dropped it then it would break."

He stows the flask for now.

"Just in a rush. Acting quickly without thinking."

He sighs.
"There's a dead body in the lodge. Looks like he hanged himself. But he still reeks, so it was recent. After being marooned here for who knows how long. I suppose we should cut him down and bury him."

Brother MacLaren will take a deep breath and then go back around to the entrance to the lodge. He peers inside again, looking for any sort of knife or cleaver among the cooking gear.

Even if we were able to make it to the grindylows today, I don't know how much help I would be. Tucci said before that his spells are running thin, as well. It may well be smarter to clear out any other points of interest on the island, then head back to the ship. We can set out for the grindylow lair in the morning, fresh and fully charged and able to rain Hells down upon them."

Tucci climbs down out of the tree carefully and joins MacLaren at the door. ”Thanks for the healing.” he says as he fires off another quick Create Water on any possible smoldering bits, just to be sure. He pauses looking at the body a moment and sighs, ”Poor bastard.”

He says a quick prayer to Desna before helping to search the place. He goes inside and moves things around with his horsechopper so he’s not actually (ugh!) touching anything. If he has to touch something first, he’ll rinse it with water briefly.

Though he agrees with Tempest, he also feels obligated to add, ”I do have one spell left, a little focus, and thanks to MacLaren here, I’m fully healthy. I can do another fight, maybe two, readily enough. But if there’s a nest of these creatures, it might be tougher than that.”

He looks to the captain, ”But it’s not my call. I’m willing to go, and do what I can to help your friend. They can’t be faring well down there.” He frets, knowing there isn’t any good decision here. Pulling out a ragged tobacco pouch, he fingers the emptiness of it, and puts it back away - forced to fret unaided.

Due to the dimness of light and the shadows cast by the hooded body it is difficult to identify specific utensils with the rusted pots and pans.

There are a few things that are identifiable beyond the bed, desk and barrels of rotting food. One item is the chain the man used to hang himself. It is a Chelish hangman’s collar, a wide leather collar attached to a chain, designed for more efficient hangings. Also visible on the desk in the southeast corner is a silver tankard, and on the bed against the back wall are several outfits, scattered about.

Really, for any more information someone will need to enter and search the room. Also don't forget there is still the perception for the 'nest' in the tree and the spyglass itself.

Sharing her frustration with the others, she finally replies, half-joking.

"After that little surprise?" She points at the now unmoving corpse "I'm seriously considering torching this whole place down as our priority. Just in case there's any more deadly threats waiting to jump us."

A bit calmer, she looks out to the cove, before turning back to the group and nodding at Ellie.

"Me, I'd like to just go and storm the grindylows' lair right now and rescue Sandara and Conchobar. Like you said Ellie, their lives are on the line." She pauses for a moment and points to the bodies of the chokers, before looking at everyone in the party, ending with Ellie again.

"But so are yours. These fights were no joke, and things could have gone much worse. And while the grindylows are quite a bit easier than what we fought up here, we're not going to be facing off against a small boarding party like with did yesterday. I don't want to lead you all down there unprepared... and risk your lives as well as theirs."

And that's assuming those two are still alive...

"If you all want to go, I'll be leading the charge. I still have a couple spells left. But I'm thinking Tempest's suggestion is the safer option." She lets her gaze linger on Ellie for a moment, before giving the cove another look, with a pained expression on her face.

"I know you wanted to explore those cornfields over there Melli, and possibly the rest of the island as well." She says as they make their way down to the beach. "If things go well with the grindylows tomorrow, we can explore a bit more. But I'd like to avoid any more surprises like the ones up there"

”Ah, so you’re lost too huh?” Tucci laughs, ”Looks like we’re all marooned!” The thought of being lost doesn’t seem to bother him.

He’ll ride Kasin, which takes some getting used to for both of them, but they’re at least able to keep up with the group for a change. As they get closer to the fields, he sighs, but follows Veronica's advice and steers clear of it for now.

He rides to the pylons and dismounts. Fearful of the frogs, he’ll look about carefully before preparing to cross.

Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20

If he sees nothing, he’ll cast Touch of the Sea on MacLaren again to help him get past it. Kasin will swim alongside with him. Tucci will (taking10 = 10 acrobatics) carefully hop from one bit to another to cross.

Backtracking their steps our intrepid adventurers follow the path back to the beach, past the 'tent' into the swamp. Having a little more experience, with no sign of the frog, which is probably still unconscious in the muck somewhere, they easily make their way across the pilings back through village and to their skiff. Sailing the small boat back to the ''Mans Promise.' they climb the cargo net on to the deck, letting a couple of the crewmembers' lower ropes and raise the ship.

As you clamber over the gunwale, you notice that the fore deck and the upper aft deck are nearly bare of flooring. 'Fishguts' who was serving dinner with Owlbear's help approaches. Raising an eyebrow as he sees the newest member of the crew but realizing Sandara and Conchobar are not with the officers, his countenance drops a little. Nodding, "Captain glad ter see yoo miskin all back safe an' sound. We've got the boards pulled up, if we keep a couple fellows worken on it over noight we can odge off with the tide in the mornen."

Extending a hand to Tucci, "I'm fishgut's the cook, help yourself ter a lickle supper." He turns back to the others and asks. "Not able ter find Sandara an' Conchobhar?"

Tucci takes in the sight of the ship in all its glory. He's careful not to step where there's no floor. "I see you've had some damage. Good think you had this planking huh?" He grins.

"Why thank you very much for that. I could use a spot of supper." Tucci smiles. He too turns to the others, holding up his plant and pack, "Where should I put this stuff? Where should I sleep?" he wonders hoping it's not on what's left of the deck planking.

"We're pretty sure we found out where they are, but couldn't keep going. We've had quite a bit of though fighting and might have failed had we pushed on. We had to come back and rest, but we're going there first thing tomorrow." Veronica replies back to Kroop, her expression grim, but sure of their decision.

At Tucci's question, she points towards the crew's berths.

"Should still be some free hammocks down there, with a chest for whatever personal belongings you want to store on the ship. As for the rest of the stuff we brought as a group from the island, it should go into the ship 's storage - take it to Mac, he's the quartermaster on the ship."

She then turns back to Kroop. "Sandara and Conchobar should be on the other side of the island, so it'd be best if we could take the ship around come morning, to get there as fast as possible. Give an extra dose of rum to those who work through the night when the job's finished, and let them rest throughout the rest of the day."

Tucci spends some time belowdecks chatting with Fishguts. He enjoys working in the kitchen. He’s not too bad with a knife, there’s great camaraderie, and while he doesn’t know his way around the spices, he’s not in charge is he?

”Lord, ah, Captain, ma’am? How’s about I join up as a Cook’s Apprentice? As well as being handy with a knife, as you’ve seen, I can also Purify Food and Drink so everything we make is safe for the crew. It’ll extend our rations as we’ll have less waste, and ensure our emergency water supply is always fresh.”

”C’mon, what do you say? Can I apprentice with Fishguts?” He looks very excited.

"Well, Kroop did lose his assistant with Mac taking over as quartermaster, although I'm sure Owlbear will be happy to keep helping him out with fishing. Like I said back on the island, though, you're not really bringing anything new with regards to your magic, so you'd really be focusing on the cooking itself."

Veronica turns to Kroop "How are you holding up without Mac's help? I'm not opposed to the idea of assigning Tucci as your assistant. But with our crew as small as it is, I'm not sure if he wouldn't make the most difference up on deck."

She looks back to Tucci "Between cooking and sailing a ship, what would you say you're more skilled at?"

Turning to the crew he calls out, "Yaouw heard the captain, whoever wants ter werk on patchen the ship tonoight get's extra rum an' ter loy abart tomorrer."

Raising an eyebrow at the prospect of a new cooks mate, Ambrose looks from Tucci back to Veronica, "Captain ma'am if the lad wants ter help I cud certainly use it." He nods towards the big man, "Owlbear is bostin fer carryen things an' maybe stirren the pot." He places his finger beside his nose, "But I fink he'd rather be fishen, or chasen the chickens beloo deck."

He smiles turning back to Tucci, "An' I've got an extra berth in me cabin yaouw can use, assumen yaouw doy snore."

As Ambrose is speaking with the officers, Tam and Fipps approach. The dwarf gestures toward the heavy set Fipps, "Ma'am Fipps an' Ah woods loch tae keep workin'. We'd jist as suin gie it ay haur as suin as possible an' th' rum an' nae workin' in th' heat ay th' day tha' moorns nicht woods be a bonus."

It's clear from the simple look on his face that Tucci would rather spend his time in the kitchen. But he shrugs and says, "I know my way around a ship, sure. I can be on deck if that's where you need me."

Veronica takes note of the halfling's expression and nods at this reply "That's good to know. If you feel you'd do better in the kitchen, go ahead and move your stuff to the cook's cabin. But we're running with a minimal crew right now, so I want you up here each morning for the daily assignments in case your help is needed up here. At least until we make port and manage to recruit additional help."

"Great!" Tucci is excited. Sounds like he may have to do some honest work from time to time, but he'll also get some extra food from time to time as well. He's very pleased.

He reports to Fishguts first to let his master know he has some additional help (likely all elbows and knees, but poor Fishguts doesn't know that yet). Then he'll head on deck and see if there's anything he can do to help until it's time to turn in.

He'd rather rest of course, but he knows early impressions are important, and he isn't paying his way on this ship. Gotta earn it.

Brother MacLaren greets Ambrose Kroop as he comes back on board.
"Yes, we found Tucci instead of Sandara and Conchobar.
That island is a hell-hole; we barely made it out alive. Ghouls, ghasts, and swarms of insects.
If we can get the ship afloat tomorrow morning, we can get to where we think they are without having to go back on the island. And if the ship isn't ready to go, we can take the cutter around."

"Tucci, fishing could be worthwhile and was sometimes one of my tasks as Cook's Mate. Maybe you are better at it than I was." It's a Survival check. "Owlbear is big and maybe a bit scary, but he's a good guy. And I think he'll like the company. The crew did not get much in the way of fresh fish when I was Cook's Mate, so they might like the change of pace."

MacLaren takes some slight umbrage at Tucci implying saying that Purify Food and Drink might be necessary. "As quartermaster, I am in charge of maintaining our stores of food and drink, and I will ensure that nothing will be spoiled. You have my word on that."

Of course, MacLaren himself will cast that spell if anything happens to spoil - if it is spoiled when he distributes it to Kroop, then MacLaren has failed at his job. So the problem should always be resolved before Tucci would have a chance to do anything about it.

Tucci replies quickly, "Oh good. I won't worry about it then. Good to have a skilled Quartermaster." He nods.

"Oh dear god!" he says with some relief, stripping down, "Your reward shall be waiting for you in heaven!"

He strips to his scivvies, and washes himself with castings of Create Water, turning his back to Tempest when he does the crotch areas out of modesty.

"Thank you, thank you!" he says when she's done. "That's one spell I always wanted to know how to cast and never quite managed. I'm just not born lucky I guess." He grins again.

As the officers sort out the new crewmember's job and then begin to unwind and take care of personal matters, the crew finish up their fish stew and rum. Tam and Fipps return to their work as the rest of the crew begin to relax a little, some gambling, some telling stories and some sneaking off into the dark for a little quiet time. Even with the rum, it is obvious that without Sandara and Conchobhar the mood is somber.

Anyone want to wrap up anything before they head to bed?

"Yeah, yeah, heaven. Been there done that..."

Tempest takes the clothes and armor and goes over it all with her spell, cleaning out all of the sand. Unfortunately, the spell takes a while to clean so much, so Tucci is probably stuck in his skivvies for a bit, but when she does return the clothes, they are as clean as they day they were made.

Once that is done, she wanders off to enjoy some solitude under the sky for a bit, to connect to the sky as part of her nightly ritual. Of course, this also grants her insight into the weather for the day to come.

Tucci thanks Tempest again, happy not to be rubbing so much in his clothes and armor. "Ahhhh."

He leaps on deck, ready to do what he can for a few hours until it's well and truly dark. Then he'll find a hammock (I assume) and get some shuteye. Kasin is probably already asleep in the corner all curled up.

Ellie herself does a fair bit of storytelling, regaling the crew with their exploits and discoveries on the island. Partly to boost morale and their loyalty toward herself and the other officers, partly to remind herself of all they had to go through to get as far as they did despite having to return without their missing shipmates.

I've got nothing else to do before next morning.

Brother MacLaren is not in great spirits. He doesn't like having to leave Sandara and Conchobar in the clutches of the Grindylows.

He quietly goes to sleep.

Still need to know if in the future if you leave a watch and if any of the officers are a part of it.

With the dawn Ambrose gets a quick breakfast together, then ringing the ships bell. As the officers and crew come on deck Tam and Fipps proudly announce that the 'Man's Promise' is reasonably seaworthy, but recommends no one use the upper aft deck or the forward deck. Having some extra rum with their biscuits and toast, the two pirates head to the lower deck for some shut eye.
