Devin tries to roll away from the monster, but the beast is quick and snaps at the bard - though it just misses as he starts to get to his feet a short distance away. Francis uses a charge from his wand to bless the party and his spirit guardian just catches the shadow mastiff on one broad shoulder with his dagger, causing the creature to cry out in pain, though it still stands... for only a moment longer though, as Elliander strides forward to end the creature's shadow-filled life with a follow-up swing after missing with the first. Amenhep rises to his feet, risking the retaliatory attack from his own foe - and pays for it as the shadow mastiff's jaws clamp down on his forearm, its teeth grinding through a crease in his armor (6 damage). But the paladin ignores the pain and stabs again with his spear - and once more Amenhep's strike is true as the broad-headed point of the weapon drives into the shadow mastiff's flank (11 damage). Devin rises to his feet, then hesitates as he sees that the isn't room to jump into the combat without cutting off Nevitash. The half-orc inquisitor takes the opening himself, easily gaining the slope to bring his heavy axe down onto the shadow mastiff! But unlike the other, this one is not lit up with faerie fire and the darkness surrounding the creature makes it difficult to see clearly. Still, perhaps luck is with Nevitash, for both blows find their mark (67 damage!!) and the thing goes down.

But just as the heroes breathe a sigh of relief as the second foe goes down, there is another baying as yet another shadow mastiff howls its chilling call! There is no sign of it at the top of the steps, though...

You don't see the shadow mastiff up there, but then again, you probably wouldn't even if it was standing at the top of the slope!

Devin, you actually DO have a penalty on the Perception check for distance (though I'm not going to detail it) and I'm not counting your bonus for the Eyes of the Eagle, but you definitely beat the Stealth check regardless.

Francis sends his spiritual ally up the ramp to the corner where Devin indicated, the faintly glowing figure following the cleric's command with ease as it glides up the slope with no problems at all. Francis sends a burst of healing to his wounded allies as well...

Francis moves up to the edge of the ramp to see as far in as he can while staying out of the way. He isn't good at climbing and doesn't want to slow anyone down that is going up. He uses a charge from a wand to cast Bless on the party.

Most of the party risks the slope and gains the top, where the secret door into the shadowy room stands open. Only Francis remains below, able to see the backs of his companions standing on the ledge there, but unable to see much more than the tops of the heads of those in the room - including his spiritual ally. Amenhep risks the climb as well, but slips on the slick surface and tumbles back to the bottom, next to the cleric's feet - though he quickly rises to his feet as Francis gives him a hand in doing so before casting a spell to bless the party using his wand. Soumral casts a protective spell on herself.

Those at the top can see into the room, from which a few passages exit - though the location of the shadow mastiff cannot be determined. Even if it were standing in plain sight, their encounter with the creatures has shown them to be damnably elusive - save when they are attacking someone, at which point they can at least tell more or less where it is standing at that moment, even if they can't clearly see it. But for now, the last one appears to be content in remaining invisible to the eye among the flickering shadows.

Sparing a quick look around, the adventurers see that the high walls of this chamber are blanketed in hieroglyphs so small that they are nearly unintelligible unless one takes considerable time to peer closely and with a fair amount of light to aid their eyes besides. Shelves, recesses, cabinets and cubbyholes are crammed with scrolls, stone slates and wax tablets along the walls, which rise up some ten feet or so the unadorned ceiling. Four passages lead from the room, two to the west, one to the east, and one to the south. There is no sign of the lurking shadow mastiff...

Prayer has a round left, the spiritual ally has two rounds remaining and Soumral's new casting of Haste has 5 rounds left, I believe. Looking up the Spiritual Ally spell, I don't think it can go hunting around on it's own accord. It attacks enemies it can see, but that's about it, I think. Actions for this round?

Holding the spear with the crook of his elbow, he fishes in his pack an pulls out a length of rope. He flips one end down to Francis and Amenhep. He turns back to face the threat, the rope over his shoulder and grabs both rope and spearshaft in both hands, ready to take the tension ...

The party moves forward cautiously, Nevitash peering into the corridor to the east and seeing a short, empty hallway leading south that elbows to the west about twenty feet ahead. Devin and Elliander see nothing in either of the halls leading west either, and the half-orc bard fishes in his backpack for some rope, tossing one end down to Amenhep and Frances. The cleric drops his shield and backpack to the floor, then wraps the rope around his wrist to get a firm hold, then climbs up the slope to reach Soumral's side. Even as the cleric unwinds the rope to toss it down to the paladin, all remains silent. Where is that damnable shadow mastiff? It must surely be around here somewhere...

I've got the channeled healing entered into the HP totals below, only Amenhep is still injured - and he only slightly now. Actions for Round 8?

The adventurers continue to carefully survey their surroundings, flickering shadows play along the hieroglyph-strewn walls loaded with shelves and alcoves containing centuries if not millennia of religious records. Still, there is no sign of the shadow mastiff even as Francis' spirit guardian flickers out of existence. As Nevitash approaches a confluence of passages though, the half-orc is none-the-less startled when the creature attacks from his left! Though the inquisitor is able to brace against the sudden attack well enough to keep his footing, still Nevitash feels teeth sink into his forearm and the battering tail of the monster sweep into his ribs (14 damage) painfully. The half-orc swings his heavy axe, but it only whiffs harmlessly through the air...
