Blue and red turn their attention on Achlyss, with red briefly twisting the borai vesk into an awkward position that leaves him vulnerable. The remaining exsiccates continue their assault. Yellow tears at Ajithu, reopening wounds that only just sealed thanks to his magic. To the north, the red exsiccate manages to keep a hold of Achlyss yet again, slowly and gradually crushing the life out of him. 20 dmg after DR, grapple maintained) Blue, not liking the feel of undead flesh and finding Achlyss busy with red, uncannily glides along the ceiling a few feet and then reaches down to Ajithu. The new tendril attack takes the kalo by surprise. They wrap around him tight, squeezing and crushing with incredible strength. As Ajithu's vision dims, the rest of you see his back and arms compressing until there's an audible pop and he falls limp in the exsiccate's grip. The creature takes the opportunity to stab into its now-helpless victim and tear strips of wet skin and flesh free before the Ajithu's armor's life-preservation functions kick in and seal him in. (43 damage on a crit, knocking Ajithu into unconsciousness)
So, since this is the first KO in this campaign, lets talk about the house rules for death and dying. You can find them in the house rules document linked at the top of the page. The idea behind these rules is to avoid people popping in and out of consciousness, prevent hoarding RP, and give people some agency to keep contributing and playing even while KO'd. If they don't end up working, we can tweak them. Here's the summary:
- You automatically stabilize, no need to spend RP. However, you cannot spend RP to get back in the fight, nor does healing your HP above 0 return you to consciousness. Instead, you enter trauma shock for 1 minute, which keeps you unconscious. At the end of 1 minute, if your HP is 0, you die. If its above 0, you return to consciousness.
- While in trauma shock, any extra damage from incidental attacks can't kill you, but massive damage or a coup de grace can. See the normal rules for those two mechanics.
- Although you are out of the fight because you can't regain consciousness, there's a consolation prize: "Heroic Surges". Each round on your turn while you're in trauma shock, you can briefly return to consciousness to do one of four minor actions to aid the rest of the group. You can flavor this as minor magics, gadgets, contingencies going off, or anything you like. The four options are Distract, Encourage, Crawl and Communicate.
Encourage - By offering encouraging words or a sign that you’re still kicking, you spur an ally forward. Choose an ally within 30 feet. On their next turn, they can take an additional guarded step as a free action. Alternatively, a movement speed of their choice is increased by 10 feet for 1 round.
Crawl - You move yourself 5 feet.
Communicate - You summon up the strength to speak, either out loud, or by sending a digital message. This message should be relatively short, around what you can convey in one round with combat banter.

With the red enemy immolated, Achlyss turns his attention to blue.
"Now we know how to tear you to shreds--come'ere!" he bellows, reaching out his clawed hand toward it and tracing shapes through the air.

Note to self: Buy literally anything that causes fire damage. All I have are P and Acid. Hopefully Acid works too.
Shocca drops her rifle and pulls out her caustolance. She leaves her microlab alone for the moment, preferring the acidic blast from the weapon rather than her own scientific miracles for the moment. She aims, takes a deep breath, and fires at the last undead monster.

Acid Damage: 2d6 + 13 ⇒ (5, 6) + 13 = 24
If Acid doesn't do it, we need to keep Arc alive another three rounds for him to go boom-boom. If we can't do that, and Achlyss can't do Fire damage, we may have to retreat.

The exsiccate's husk-body draws together with a long rasp before it lashes for Arc one more time. Ajithu's distraction comes at exactly the right time, sending half the tendrils toward the kalo at the last moment. Arc dodges the rest and pulls through unscathed.
(Distraction made the difference, otherwise it would have been a hit exactly!)
