You have each received a magical missive, bearing the seal of the Decemvirate themselves. It directs you Skyreach in Absalom for a mission briefing vital to Pathfinder operations in Iobaria.

You have arrived a few minutes before the appointed time, and are asked to wait in an observation tower high above the halls of the Grand Lodge. An hour or so before sunset, you have a few minutes to introduce yourselves and socialize prior to proceeding further.

Mission briefing will commence after Rosh Hashonah - Tuesday, September 7th, 2021!

The red rocks of a windswept mesa, and the ages it takes to form them both show in the face of this elf. His hair has tawny chevrons on white and look more like hawk feathers than hair.

He claps cautiously upon Okh's entrance. "Greetings Sorcerer Okh." It might show on his face, but when he entered the demi-plane centuries ago, goblins were still enemies of his people. He is aware of the changes of course and is embarrassed to be so... well ancient. "I am Seleneth Nenaral, a stranger to this new time."

He bows to the Dawnflower's cleric. "I am too a servant of the god's, Ketephys, the Hunter, guides my bow. Indeed he does carry a fancy bow, "And this is Mesa," he says introducing the hawk on his shoulder.

Our 4th needs a little bit more time to get set, but I'm going to get the ball rolling, if a little bit slowly at-first. Something I forgot to mention is that I craft in-game soundtracks for almost all of the games I run, and this one is no different! Because of my song selections, I believe the ones for this scenario can all be found for free on youtube, so I'll use links to there, and if you want you can just play them on a loop or some such!

Track 01: Pre-Game - Drifting

Note that this scenario is very combat-heavy, so please be prepared!

The door to the tower opens with a clunk, and eight cloaked figures stride into the room without ceremony. Each one wears a unique, intricately designed mask that seems alive with powerful magic. The turn to the room’s center in unison as a ninth individual — Eliza Petulengro, the only unmasked member of the mysterious Decemvirate — enters and closes the door behind her. She quickly turns to address the gathering.

Track 02: Briefing - SeeD

“Pathfinders, we have an emergency on our hands. Sapphire, a member of our leadership, has been possessed by an ancient and wholly evil spirit. Between this spirit’s fiendish magic and Sapphire’s subsumed knowledge and guile, we are struggling to get out ahead of whatever destruction this foul entity is concocting. What we do know is that the spirit is that of a cyclops demoniac who intended to summon the Demon Lord of storms, Urxehl, into our world.”

Another member of the Decemvirate wearing a mask fitted with stag-like antlers speaks. “The summoning requires a rare ritual. We do not know how to counteract such unusual spellcraft, but we have an ally who does. Dolok Darkfur, the manifested god of the Farheaven Clan from old Sarkoris, should be able to assist us. Through Dolok and the god caller Nelket, the Farheavens connect to traditions of calling, binding, and communicating with extraplanar forces.”

Eliza Petulengro pauses for a moment and then speaks again. “You are among our most experienced Pathfinder agents following our Society’s recent losses. We need you to convince Dolok Darkfur and Godcaller Nelket of the Farheaven Clan to help us rescue Sapphire and put a stop to this spirit’s machinations. We can teleport you near to the Farheaven settlement, where I’m confident you’ll be warmly received.

The Society has come to the Farheaven’s aid several times in the past few years, so you should be able to convince them to return the favor. This mission is time-sensitive, and the integrity of the Decemvirate, if not the safety of the world, depends on your success. Are you ready? If not, we have a Pathfinder quartermaster available downstairs, but please do not take long!”

At this juncture, the Decemvirate is being tight-lipped and not answering questions. You might get answers to any questions you have once you reach Iobaria.

In the meantime, some of you might already know things about the demon lord Urxehl. If you would like to roll a Religion or Society check to Recall Knowledge, please do so:

Hopefully our 4th will catch up soon. Don't want to wait longer before moving along.

At this juncture, you all have 1 Hero Point to begin the adventure with. Thanks to our player portraying a pre-gen, there are enough GM Glyphs on the table for everyone to start with 2 instead of 1. In addition, as GM, I'm starting with 1 as well that I can only use on one of you.

None of the Decemvirate deign to answer Selenth's question. Once you gather together (with player #4's iconic), they perform a teleportation ritual to whisk you across Avistan. This unique ritual ties into magical undercurrents of the region, homing in on Dolok’s location using a small amethyst figurine of a feathered bear as a special focus. As they finish, your vision flashes with light, and then the ground beneath you changes.

Track 03: Farheavans to arms! - The Stage is Set

The setting sun casts a blood-red light over the Farheaven camp. A wall of dark, smoky clouds fills the western skyline, hovering over an entire forest of burnt trees. Farheaven warriors rush to sharpen spears and string bows, gathering at a network of west-facing earthworks resembling a battlefield more than a settlement. Amid the commotion, a human woman approaches. This is Nelket, spiritual leader of the Farheaven Clan. “Pathfinders, your timing is impeccable as always. I know our people owe you so much already, but could you lend us your aid once more?”

Despite the rush to prepare for battle going on around you, this is probably your best chance to ask questions!

Track 03: Farheavans to arms! - The Stage is Set

Nelket replies to each of you in turn:

Ukh wrote:
"What kind of ritual did Darkfur perform? Why had he to heal the forest?"

“He is presently leading our druids in a ritual that will restore this blasted land so we can begin our lives here anew. The ritual triggered some sort of backlash from the remnants of the Worldwound. I’m sure he would love to speak with you about it, but first we have to stop those who seek to oppose us from killing him... and us.”

Kyra wrote:
"And what kind of enemies can we expect?

"Latent evils left over from the Worldwound. Given where we are, I’m guessing they are minions of Flauros, the demon lord of fire. Beyond that, our scouts and divinations cannot yet tell."

Selenth wrote:
"What defenses do you have, where will my bow be of most use?"
Merisiel wrote:
"How can we be of most use to you?"

Nelket sighs with audible relief and counts her blessings for the unexpected reinforcements.

She leads you to the western edge of the camp. "We stand in the Forest of Soldiers. At least, that’s what we called it before we fled Sarkoris. Servants of Flauros burned it a hundred times over with Abyssal fire. Now people call it the Forest of Embers. This is where Dolok decided we would rebuild our legacy, starting by bringing the forest back to life.”

"We have warriors guarding our northern flank, where we are most open, but we do not have enough forces to watch the west where the forest burns at the edge of the ritual. Approaches are few, but they are consequential. Our medical tents are unfortunately close-by and cannot be moved. Stop the enemy from getting past you and in among our wounded, or else many will die."

As you reach the western edge of the camp, she reaches into her satchel and then hands each of you a multi-hued feather. "These are from Dolok Darkfur himself, and can be used to help secure the perimiter..."

She proceeds to show you how to activate these feathers, as detailed on Handout 1 on the Map Link.

Important Information about your magical feathers:
- It takes 1-action (interact) action to plant a feather. This turns it into a Dolok Tree of a color you choose when planting it.
- Once planted, the tree is immobile and acts on your initiative using the tactical routines presented in Handout 1. These actions do not count against your actions each turn.
- Once ever, you may use a three-action (interact) action to collapse a tree back into a handheld feather. This repairs any and all damage or conditions the tree has suffered at the time you "pick up" the tree. You may re-plant the tree as normal, but once planted a second time, it cannot be picked up again.
- Dolok trees fill a 5-foot square and stand 60-feet high.

After showing you two paths that lead to the medical tents (A and B, the latter partially blocked with rubble) and also a dry well that could prove to be a vulnerability to the camp (C), Nelket leaves you to set up your defenses, wishing you luck as you hold the line!

-----

A churning current of primal water, conjured by Dolok Darkfur’s ongoing ritual, rushes along a crooked trench at the edge of the Farheaven encampment. Sapling trees and fragile underbrush bloom gradually but visibly within the borders of the mystical river, breaking the blasted earth with spots of green and the faint creak of growing stems and trunks. In stark contrast, the older trees beyond the river stretch their splintered, ashen branches like flayed fingers toward a soot-choked sky. Any plants rejuvenated by their proximity to the water continuously burst into flame like embers newly doused with oil.

Terrain Notes:
- Undergrowth counts as difficult terrain that also provides the concealed condition to those inside of it, but can be burned away with fire.
- The river is 5-feet deep and swiftly flows north-to-south, requiring athletics to swim.
- Squares on fire deal damage and are also difficult terrain, but help with visibility. The smoke they produce can be toxic, but only inside or adjacent to them.
- The entire battlefield is choked by burning smoke and is thus under Dim Light.

You may now prepare your defenses!
Talk amongst yourselves, figure out positioning for yourselves and your trees (and what color/type they will be), and add a "good to go" at the bottom of a post once your character is ready to proceed!

The goblin takes time to think because he's wondering how they can proceed to get chances of successes. The feather tokens are good things but not moving.

I think the blue one may be the most useful, with violet. But we need to take care that they won't be down quickly. We know that the enemy uses fire, like me... I may cast a Resist energy on me at least. So I will be independent of a tree to get a resistance to fire. For the rest I suppose it is better to avoid to be near each other in case of a fireball. What do you think?

Can we choose the color of the tree or do we get one of each?

I also think we have to spread out to avoid a burst spell. Then which tree to choose if we can?

To the cleric it is not very clear how to handle the situation.

That only applies for a rogue's sneak attack class feature, and you appear to be a champion. That said, when I looked at your character sheet I noticed that you are an ancient elf, which could mean you took the rogue dedication that gives you sneak attack. However, your sheet doesn't have a lot of info on it - please see to that when you have a second? Thank you very much in advance!

Seleneth's first shot is dead on the money, finding a critical spot to strike the demon, dealing 15 damage!
(In 2nd edition critical damage uses the initial damage and doubles it, then adds deadly at the end)

Good call, Okh - I screwed that up! In addition, Merisiel was out of the blast-range, so both take 0 damage!

Okh fires a heightened hydraulic push at the red demon and hits! In addition to the bludgeoning damage from the spell, the water seems to burn the mind of the demon for an additional 3d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 4) = 12 mental damage!

This aquatic assault is enough to kill the demon outright!

With the red one dead, I'm going to say Okh's tree targets Yellow and Kyra readies an action to cast Spiritual Weapon as a reaction when Blue moves into range.

Okh's tree strikes the yellow demon for cold damage and an additional 3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 2) = 7 mental damage!

Kyra's spiritual scimitar will swing wide when it gets the chance.

Track 04: Combat: Fire Burns - The Extreme

The other two demons roar and advance. Following their tactics, both unleash fireball spells to try and catch the largest number of you as possible!

The blue demon targets Merisiel, Merisiel's Red tree, and Seleneth's Brown tree!
Fire Damage: 6d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 6, 1, 5, 4) = 22

Merisiel Reflex: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Red Tree Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

The tree underneath Seleneth quakes more than a little bit as it continues to burn, but Seleneth fires more arrows down at the yellow demon! The first strike is a solid hit, while the second and third are critical hits, for a total of 60 damage!

Seleneth's brown tree has no enemy targets.

Track 04: Combat: Fire Burns - The Extreme

Seeing the yellow demon so hurt, Merisiel pops back up from concealment to fire at the yellow demon as well!

+1 shortbow 1: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (20) + 14 = 34

The first shot is enough to put the yellow demon down, so she shifts her target to the only one remaining!

Okh, resistance doesn't stack unless the power/source declares it so - you just get the better resistance, but as you'll see below it won't matter much in this case due to your cunning plan! ;)

Kyra sends the spiritual arms of Sarenrae forth once more, but holy and unholy flame gods perhaps do not mix so well, and no damage is dealt.

Okh, however, strikes the last demon with water, causing it mental anguish. The blast is also enough to send it into the river currently blessed by Dolok Darkfur, causing it to scream at the top of its lungs and trash about...for both seconds of life it had left in it. Its dead body flows south past Okh's position, as you are now out of combat!

Okh and Seleneth, for battlefield control, planning, and execution, you each earn one Hero Point!

Track 05: Planning - Junction

Having protected the ritual and all of the Farheaven camp, a wave of cleansing energy sweeps outward from the camp to the bridge, healing all allied PCs, creatures, and trees of 20 hit points of damage.

STATUS
Okh (Blue Tree) (0 damage / 0 damage)
Kyra (Blue Tree) (0 damage / 0 damage)
Seleneth (Brown Tree) (0 damage / 21 damage)
Mesa (Seleneth) (0 damage)
Merisiel (Red Tree) (2 damage / 0 damage)

Farheaven scouts inform you that you have approximately 12 minutes to prepare before more attackers draw near. You can use this time to mend any of your wounds (hah) or those of your trees. You may also take this opportunity to "pick up" and re-plant your trees in new locations, if you wish. The act of picking up a tree cures it of all damage, but planting it a second time renders it immobile and unable to be picked up and moved again in the future.

The rest of the battlefield remains unchanged with terrain notes HERE.

12 minutes reprieve before the next wave, Pathfinders. What will you do with it?

Seleneth, if your edicts include something related to healing others (e.g. Sarenrae: "provide aid to the sick and wounded"), I'd say yes. However, Mesa has 0 damage at the moment meaning you can take the 10 minutes to refocus without worrying about treating wounds.

Ahh... That explains my confusion. In our current game, the healer has that edict. Not so for me. Also, no changes to location or strategy.
