Ploog does not look at all concerned at Deluge's threat.
"You are in a hostile town. None of you even speak the language.
I will tell everybody that I held up my end of the bargain, and you did not hold up yours.
Either because you are afraid to face Vroth, or because you were too stupid to understand what you agreed to.
The only people who could possibly buy the beast are the Bonecarvers or the tiefling Madriskaal, and they would have no use for it.
Perhaps your cleric was lying about wanting to make right the wrongs that Kline had done? Tsk, tsk.
Finally, even if you do sell it, gold won't do you any good. You need what I have, which is Gulros here.
Leave if you want. Take the bulette if you want - it will be entertaining to watch you try to sell it.
The match is in two hours. Come back and fight, and you get Gulros if you win - plus all of Vroth's belongings.
Don't show up, and Gulros takes your place in the arena. He is worth much more to you than to me. I don't want you planning some rescue mission to steal him later. Hardly as dramatic a contest, but Vroth will make it entertaining."
He stands and sneers at Deluge. "You all think orcs are so stupid. Those are my terms. Fight Vroth or your guide to Urgir dies."
Agree to his terms? Leave? Attack him here and now? Propose a different offer?

![]() |

Guys, I don't know about you all, but I'm tired of fighting. The right thing to do would be the pacifist thing to do and not fight. If he kills Urgir, that is on his guilty concious and he would be doing the wrong thing, and he won't be going into heaven, but we will still be going into heaven, cause we didn't kill Urgir. You can kill Urgir if you want, but doing so is a mortal sin and you shouldn't do it, it will send you to the other place, Hell, instead of up in Heaven with all the Lawful good dieties. diplomacy: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24 to play off my religion, convince him Hell is real and that he doesn't want to do it so he can go to Heaven.

Something about the way Ploog keeps referring to Vroth nags at Fethril. "You keep saying that we would win all of Vroth's 'belongings'. Everything that belongs to him? Does that include more esoteric things such as debts, curses, or other obligations?"

GM Aldizog |

Sorry Kyra, convincing a high-level orc ex-gladiator arena owner that killing is wrong would be an exceedingly high DC. Literally, killing has been and is Ploog's life.
"He'll have a chance in the arena." Ploog chuckles.
"Elf, you are clever, I'll give you that. You are entitled to Vroth's material belongings. Armor. Weapons. Potions. A nice cloak. You are under no obligation to take them. You do not assume his contract with me."
There is no hidden agenda in that regard.

![]() |

From my post 2 weeks ago "But interesting can be deadly. I have the suspicion that if things go poorly we will be fighting Vroth." Looks like we had to fight him even if things went well.
Rogar shrugs.
"I watched Vroth fight. If we fight him he will try for our death. You are trading the beast for your champion? Or do you really think Vroth will survive this?"
After a moment.
"Of course we might be willing to keep Vroth alive, If it was worth the effort."

GM Aldizog |

It's a fair question, Fethril, considering what Ploog has already pulled with the fine print.
"If you are strong enough to defeat Vroth, then the bulette becomes the new star of the show. Yeah, you beat it too, but nobody saw that happen.
If Vroth kills you, I get to keep my slave Gulros here.
If you decide to spare Vroth... I don't know if he'd have much of a future in the arena. Big hit to his reputation. Maybe we'd salvage him, maybe not."
Ploog does not seem terribly concerned about Vroth's fate. Should you happen to have Vroth at your mercy, it will be up to you.
Bout is in 2 hours. Not enough time to rest and prepare spells, but there would be enough time to procure a scroll or something if you wanted.
Will move on to the final combat tomorrow or Monday.

![]() |

If it wasn't for the fact that the scenario pretty much demands that we fight this fellow, I'd walk. Still, we can argue a bit.
"I beg to differ. You asked that we 'bring back a live, healthy, bulette for me'. We did that. We never said we would give it to you any more than you said you would give the guide to us. Seems like if you can be a rules lawyer, we can too."

GM Aldizog |

Two hours later...
Please place yourselves in the white box on the map.
Ploog stands before his throne and triumphantly salutes the crowd, which roars its approval.
“People of Urglin, no doubt even now you have heard of the mighty Bulette Band, the brave pinkskins who walked into the wilderness and dragged back a mighty landshark. Today we shall see if their fame endures or if it will splatter to a gruesome end from the weapons of the reigning champion, victor of forty fights.”
As he makes his announcements, he walks down one of the sets of stairs, descending about halfway to the arena’s floor. The massive double doors begin to creak open as he waves toward them.
“Let us welcome the champion of the Bloodworks, Vroth the Crusher!”
The spectators rise to their feet as one and begin banging on the bleachers and support beams with approval, causing parts of the crudely built arena to groan with strain.
The Ettin champion advances into the arena, accompanied by two giant wolves.
With a broad grin, Ploog makes a chopping motion with his hand and exclaims, “Let’s see some blood!”

Will post the enemies' turns after you are all positioned. Short-term buffing would not be allowed, but any hour/level or 10 min/level buffs could reasonably be applied - you know basically when the fight will start, but not down to the exact minute.

Rogar would ask for a charge from his Mage Armor wand. And we knew we were expected to fight in the arena or they wouldn't have had it as a map. It was just a question of what we were expected to fight.

![]() |

And Deluge would grant James barkskin in the moments leading up to the battle - when Ploog approaches the stand, and then recharge it with a pearl of power level 2. Hopefully, the barbarian will last long enough to dish our as much damage as possible.
Knowledge nature on wolves: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
What kind of armor it Vroth wearing and/or the wolves and what is his weapon. Metal? Wood?

GM Aldizog |

Barkskin lasts an hour at your level, so you could have cast it well in advance - Ploog isn't going to keep this crowd waiting an hour. Do note that this is still the same day as the bulette fight, so any spells expended then are still expended.
I put Deluge and Fethril at the back of the box. @Deluge, Vroth is wearing leather armor and carrying two flails (wooden handles, metal balls). The wolves are unarmored.
Vroth charges, striking at James and landing a solid blow.
Doesn't seem like he has any ability to strike twice on a charge.
Attack, Charge: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 16 + 2 = 27
Damage: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (6, 2) + 8 = 16
His two dire wolves also move and attack, one biting at Rogar and one biting at James.
Attack Rogar: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21 I believe that hits flat-footed AC even with Mage Armor... I'm sorry, I really hate the flat-footed rule in situations like this.
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Trip?: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
A wolf bites Rogar, but fails to topple the dwarf.

The one attacking James fails to hit.

Rogar increases his defenses Ki point adding +4 to dodge as swift action. then steps up to the giant 5ft step. and tries to grab him.

Sliding around the wolf, Two Blades jammed the point into the foe, aiming to bring it down in order to reduce the threats to Rogar

What size are the ettin's weapons? Warp wood, at his level, can affect up to large objects.

![]() |

Like a lot of druid spells, they are very powerful in the right situation and useless otherwise. Like some of the animal spells or Entangle.
Deluge fires off a DC20 warp wood spell targeting the handles of the flails being held by the overly antagonistic (one might even say violent) ettin and tries to hide his pudginess somewhere safe.

![]() |

Ogre man, you have come to the realization that you have tore your muscles, you forgot to work out. You aren't as strong as you once were. You realize you want to "Flee" until your problem is fixed I cast command on the Ogre. Will save dc 15

GM Aldizog |

Two Blades strikes the wolf, but does not kill it.
Deluge targets the ettin's flails with his magic.
I believe that because the spell targets objects, not creatures, there would be two saves required; one for each flail. But using the ettin's save bonus since they are attended items.

Kyra's spell has no effect.
Vroth roars over the loss of his wolf and strikes at James.

Yes, I should have remembered that!
Deluge casts a spell and a wickedly hot flame sprouts from his fist and zips across the field towards the ettin. Though he is not all that good of a shot, how can you miss something the size of a tree?

Deluge can tell that his flame is about to miss, when suddenly he remembers that he was Blessed by Fethril, and his attack hits!
James, mostly healed by Kyra, lands a solid blow on the ettin.
