I'm trained in crafting... but if my Crafting roll is as good as my medicine roll, we'll be lucky to have chopsticks out of those barrels :)

Sorry guys, super busy work day. I'll have a post in a few hrs.

Based in the rolls so far - let's wrap it up, folks.

@Avon ... it's not your higher level that helps with the crafting, it's you higher intelligence that really counts, if you are trained in the skill.

I think someone forgot to appease the forum dice god and our medicine checks are paying for it! :)

Plus being a bit higher level as well as taking a higher rank in crafting so that I can craft magical things.

I suppose we could take a look at the disesase tomorrow. Clearly it is a disease, since she's berdidden etc.
We can only be outside for 8 hrs per day so 8 hrs of sleep + 8 hrs treat disease sounds like a plan.
Perhaps we should head out and look for others in the meantime.

Yeah, 2 h per travel which means that we can check 1 more person that day. Then come back for the curfew and night. THis is when we built the raft and heal her.
And regarding rabies, it is a surprisingly deadly disease. There are only a few peoples that survived the viral infection after they got ill. The treatment of giving shots after being bitten is effective. But before the shots, it must have been a horrible illness. Now it is just bad.
Ysoldt Minso

Agreed. Saw some videos of untreated rabies patients. Nasty stuff.

That's what I have in my 2 gaming groups at work -- basically everyone's fixated on the body count so that they can be the "MVP" for the day. And most of the time their strategy is swarm the monster and pound the stuffing out of it. Works for goblins or skeletons maybe... but as one group found out, a single cinder rat is giving them grief. Bite gives 1d4 persistent fire... when we ended our session (lunchtime game), 3 of the 4 in the party were on fire and running out of hit points :)

Surround & Pound definitely does not work well in 2e. I finished GM ing a scenario that has only 1 fight but it's a doozy if you don't check your options.
Correct. We're playing the Beginner Box. They're finding out the hard way that the 2nd level of the dungeon is loads harder than the first. The cinder rat is an intro to persistent damage. 45hp and AC18 (if I remember correctly). Surrounded by a cloud of smoke, so concealed (DC 5 flat check to see if their attack actually hits). Fetid fumes w/in a 5' radius (DC 22 Fort save or -1 to all checks for 1 rd).
The monk, cleric and fighter are all on fire. Fighter has 1 hp left (so he's going down next turn unless the cleric heals). The 3 are all within 5' of the rat so they all have to make Fort saves every turn. The Sorcerer is 10' away (but dice rolls are so bad none of her rays of frost hit)... But the other 3 don't seem to notice that I've never asked the Sorcerer to make the Fort save... what made it worse was that the monk actually rolled 2 crits but failed the DC 5 flat check...

I didn't play the beginner box, but this seems like a monstrosity for new players. Are these level 1 characters?
Personally, I'd honestly switch this for something else if I saw it in a campaign for new players. I'd hate to dissuade them from playing.
Quickblade Trueshot

Yes. All lvl 1 characters. I might have to modify it slightly so as not to kill them... My players are having a blast playing, I kind of have to snap them out of the "surround and pound" mentality. It worked well for lvl 1 of the dungeon -- they easily took down 4 skeletons and a zombie. Have to teach them that combat is a fluid situation where you need to adapt quickly or go down.

I mean if they like it... Guess I'm just a merciful GM myself.

When I started playing 2e, I was still too used to everyone having an Attack of Opportunity. And since I could attack up to 3 times per round, I would just run into melee and attack thrice. It took a while until I realized I could freely fall back, or flank, or raise a shield, or intimidate, and the 3rd attack wasn't as useful. A -10 penalty means you need a lot of situational buffs to make it worthwhile, anyway.
Also I've had to get away from the general video game approach of just making my numbers big enough to throw tactics out the window and HULK SMASH until the room is clear.

Oh yes. I came from there too -- In AD&D (I started from 1st edition; 2nd wasn't all that different) all monsters had Attack of Opportunity.
Most of my "soft targets" now, have learned to use 2 actions, then raise (or cast) shield. Unfortunately, both fighters (1 in each group) don't even realize they have a shield and swing for the fences every time...
The first adventure I ran for them -- I had to stop the adventure because they were not going to survive... They would enter a room with 5 goblins... then the 12hp sorcerer would draw her rapier and charge...

How do you award XP for PFS scenarios adopted for non-PFS games? I'm planning to run a PFS scenario for one of my groups as a warmup (new characters; just so that they break them in a bit). Is there some sort of guide for this?
Ysoldt Minso

I use milestone leveling, but I just looked at the leveling rules, since it's always nice to know.
Basically in 2e you gather xp up to 1000. Then level up, and reset the counter to zero. And go to 1000 again.
So without things like environment, hazards, etc...
Suppose your players (four characters - the numbers vary for different group size) are fighting a level adequate creature in a "white room", and they beat it. They all get 40 xp. So you need to do 25 encounters like that to reach 1000 and level.
Considering you can change up the encounter and put it into darkness, give it other mobs, or a special item, etc; you can of course raise that xp award number.
But that is the gist of it.
Holy crap but 25 fights is a lot. In 1e it is approx 14 and that is already enough.
| GM chadius |
25? Ouch. I remember in AD&D when 12 was needed and that was long enough.
I also realized any challenge was an "encounter", so surviving a trap was an encounter. Or quietly locking a door so the goblins were stuck inside and you could sneak past them counted as an encounter. Or explaining to the guards that you didn't steal the crown jewels, someone framed you for it. Basically, if there's a serious penalty for failure, that counts towards their level up.
...but yeah, I just stick to milestones. It works well since I always have the same table with the same players.

If you run a scenario, I'd take the easy option, it's 3 scenarios to level up, so approx 334HPs per scenario ....
I'm just a simpleton.
Then there are probably 3-5 encounters in the scenario + social encounters to give you 9-15 to level up .... better than 24.
......
On the newbie to 2E gamers, gotta remember to use the Reactions, especially Shield Block when necessary, which also makes the Raise Shield action so important.
Another thing in 2E that I think is worth remembering, is that poison and disease can be very very nasty .... along with the persistent damage that no one likes until they roll a 15 or over.
Also watched a Glasscannon Podcast 2E game, where the persistent damage was up to 20 .... (not sure if they were playing it right, but that's just plain scary). Although I think there's a rule that says persistent damage only persists for 1 minute (or 10 rounds).

Forgot to mention there is also fast progression option. It lowers the required xp to 800 but it's still a lot for me.
And yes, individual traps, environmental hazards and even social encounters add up to that total, though depending on their difficulty.
Still. Milestone leveling for me. 3 scenarios per level sounds like a good gauge.

In the meantime, So I think now we try to Gather Info to find the Thief, DC20 is steep... I recommend everyone who has Diplomacy trained to try it ;) Maybe volume will solve it :D

Though I don't foresee a problem, might end up sickened 1 this weekend -- 2nd vaccine shot on Friday. No idea how I'm going to feel after that...

I'm very busy from now over the weekend with a change of Lodger, so got a lot of work to complete before the new one turns up at the weekend, I won't be posting until Monday.
Sorry peps ... Have great weekend yourselves.
For botting, Jac is a Rogue Dedication in the making, probably next level, as a pickpocket and thief from Qadira. In a fight, normal stuff, hit and shield up, also has Attack of Opportunity reaction.

Yes, July 4th is Independence Day in the US. That's a Sunday, so I know a lot of employees are getting July 5th off as a result. I'll be checking the forums normally on both days, but I won't bot anyone unless they specifically ask to.
Good to hear the 2nd shot didn't knock you out, Quickblade.

Nah, we just celebrate when ever the bank has holidays, plus Good Friday and Easter Monday. The French and Spanish are better at it than us, with all their saints days ..... We can't just fit in a Rebellious Servants Day, but it's a good shout.
