Penny was in midstep toward Ben, sure he impaled and bleeding out, but... no. "his armor actually Worked, will wonders never cease."

Ben represses a snort and tries to focus on the various life threatening situations in front of him.

Katherine continues to demonstrate accuracy with her specialized weapon, hitting the remaining creature. Ben fails to follow her example, though. Penny alters her methods and causes the beast to pause as she floods its mind with random stimulus. Boots takes advantage of the creature's dazed state and hits it with a solid shot. Chase, on the other hand, clearly needs to recalibrate her fists.

While the effects of Penny's mental assault on the creature only lasts for a moment, it's enough to give the crew enough time to finish it off.

Adani pulls her partner away from the dead creature and slaps his face a few times before the unconscious skittermander flutters his eyes and looks about in surprise. "Dang! Stridermanders!" he says when he sees the two bodies. "They're probably what's been poaching our herds!"

"Oh, that... was... ohhgh" the very hungover and rather naked Penny disentangles herself from the arms of someone she really doesn't want to think about ever being in the arms of. She quickly gets dressed and out of the barn stall she was sleeping with the... 'other' person... as quick as can be.

A bleary-eyed Chase steps out of the barn stall behind Penny, still naked from their previous night's exertions. "Running away so quickly, love? Not even going to stay for breakfast?" She wraps her strong arms around the mystic's waist and gently kisses the back of her neck.

Penny had been focused on her thoughts, allowing those strong arms to ambush her. She wills the startled squeak it causes to die horrible, then pats on Chase's forearm, to request release. From last nights... activities... she knows they can hold one down with ease when all that other person wants to do is nibble...

Penny forces her mind to FOCUS. "A quartermaster's job is never done. Things to buy, things to organize." things to lock into a dark hole to never think about... except that thing with the ---

The small blonde sighed, especially at the pleasant warmth of the other woman's lips on her neck, but also because while her job might give her an out for the moment, they spend every single day together.

So... "Chase, I am certain you understand that, well, to be blunt, I don't like you. You are crass, untidy, have destroyed my things... though you have plenty of wonderful qualities, intelligence, strength, a tendency at thoroughness that boggles the mind... but last night was due to that local drink with the surprisingly kick. Not me being suddenly warm and squishy inside."

Penny considered, while she enjoyed. "Hmm... no marshmellows, just eager beavers. I think that would be an acceptable endeavor. We can call it exercise, clearing hormonal blockages..." she smiles at the thought, nestling back into the mechanic, rubbing the right part into the right place that her empathic mind tells her Chase rather appreciates. "My current duties could be postponed for an hour... or two?"


A third voice speaks up from the now vacated stall and Adani's dark-furred form makes an appearance in the doorway, also sans clothes.

"There's no rush," she says with a purr as she stretches arms over her head. "I can arrange for Karm to deliver a few bottles of tok to your ship as soon as I find him. It's the least we can do, particularly after last night."

She chuckles as she presses a kiss to Penny's cheek and then walks away through the barn, her tail swaying saucily.

She moans softly as Penny begins to rub her in the right spot. ”Mmm, yeah, now where were we?” She drags the quartermaster back into the stall and closes the door...

Penny watches the saucily swaying tail "It is amazing the things she could do with that thing, wasn't it?" but then she is pulled back into the stall and conversation topics are forgotten for awhile.


With your business with the ranch concluded, you take your leave and head north to one of the large space ports in Command-3. It only takes a day to get the Oliphaunt serviced and then you begin the process of seeking out your next job.

Three days later after a fruitless search for likely possibilities, Ben receives an incoming call on his comm unit.

The individual identifies himself as Captain Eshovayo Fireheart, an officer within Directive 9 - the Veskarium's military intelligence branch. He explains that his unit focuses on capturing fugitives that continually elude the Veskarium's grasp. Recently, one such fugitive committed a crime at an industrial facility within Command-3; Eshovayo would like your crew's assistance bringing her to justice. While he doesn't want to discuss the details over his comm unit, Eshovayo heard from Karmalak Gravender — who he describes as "a loyal ally of the empire" — that the bold and skilled crew of the Oliphaunt produces excellent results.

Eshovayo states that the bounty on the fugitive is 10 BP dead, 15 BP alive. He also offers the crew an upfront stipend of 5,000 credits just for accepting the mission. If you're interested, he'd like to meet you in person at TruBlu Dyeworks, the scene of the crime, as soon as you can.

Katherine tries the tok but almost immediately stops drinking it again when she realises just how much alcohol it seems to have. She attempts to warn her companions, but after being rebuffed she decides to simply keep her opinions to herself and retire early to read and try to avoid being disturbed by the rest of the crew and their 'nocturnal activities'.

Hovering over the console with Ben between Penny on one side and Katherine on the other, the quartermaster plays devil to the doctor's angel. "It is also normally like finding a needle in a haystack, or so I hear the expression said. Katherine would point out using any decent metal detector would find the needle straight away. So more like a minuscule glass bead on the beach?" she looks to Katherine to see if that expression works better. "Either way how do we know this Captain isn't just on the payroll of Chase's sister?"

Chase taps away at her computer, getting a hit on TruBlu Dyeworks within seconds. "Don't know if the captain can be trusted or not, but there was definitely a crime that went down at the Dyeworks. Armed burglary, 14 dead. That's not really Eline's style." She shows the rest of the crew the search results.

Ben wakes up the next morning alone, slightly dishevelled and with the fading memory of some very pleasant dreams. Thankfully the experimental necrograft seems to deal rather brilliantly with hangovers, so despite his alcohol consumption the Captain is up and ready to go rather quickly. Quickly enough to note Penny and Chase returning to the ship together. Not that he says anything.

"Let's do a little digging first." Ben says, although he doesn't reject the idea out of hand (which has nothing to do with the fear of his next physical...).

With a little help from Boots the information is procured and Ben lets out a meditative hum. "Well the Captain is a dedicated veteran, and well thought of in the community. He doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would be easily subourned for anything less than a planetary sized bribe. EJ Corp might be able to do it, but I doubt Eline would have those resources to spare. Despite the jobs difficulty I think this would be worthwhile. Having positive contacts in law enforcement would make this a much safer place for us to return to in future. Having something of a home-base may serve us well further down the line."

Unless any of his crew object vociferously, Ben returns their acceptance of the job and arranges a rendezvous at the Dyeworks forthwith.

Penny doesn't object any further.


The city of Command-3 has several distinct layers; the original settlement, now home to some of the city’s most nefarious criminals, sits well below the modern levels. TruBlu’s corporate headquarters lies on an upper layer reserved for industrial and commercial facilities. The expansive and lavish corporate campus includes 20 different dye processing facilities, a maglev transportation system, a sculpture garden, and an exercise facility.

With a quick trip utilizing the public transport system, you arrive outside the Zayada blue processing center. As you do so, a large vesk emerges from a black urban cruiser parked there. This must be Eshovayo.

He greets you and leads them into the facility, through a security checkpoint, a warehouse, and a greenhouse strung with cables bearing large, desiccated leaves weighted with clumps of shriveled, dried berries. These rooms shows signs of forced entry and battle: bloodstains, broken glass, and scars from weapons.

Reaching the greenhouse, Captain Fireheart plucks a leaf from the wall, turns it over, and delicately splits one of the brown sacs on its back with the tip of his claw. A tiny golden insect with thousands of legs and circular mandibles crawls out and over the vesk’s hand. "Zayapedes burrow inside the leaves of bruwayo bushes," he says. "And those only grow around the city of Zayada, south of here. Skittermanders call these things 'the gold of the garden planet,' but the real gold is inside." As Eshovayo crushes the insect between his nails, a vibrant blue liquid dribbles down his finger. "Zayada blue. So popular, the whole company is named after it."

"However, about one in a hundred of these zayapedes holds a more valuable treasure, too small for you to see — a bacterium that can be used to create a biological weapon called hellfire toxin. Hellfire is so dangerous and lethal that even the Veskarium rejected its use. Shortly before I contacted you, a team of highly trained and, as of yet, unidentified individuals broke in here and killed more than a dozen people, including eight civilians. When TruBlu took stock of the damage, they discovered the theft: hundreds of zayapedes — all carrying the toxin and slated for safe disintegration. We do have a lead: a formian by the name of Jassk Beskask; used to work at this facility and visited, unprompted, just before the attack. We have reasonable suspicion that they stole the bugs then and set up the attack to cover their tracks."

"There is only one person who has ever successfully weaponized hellfire toxin, and she used it to slaughter a city of innocent people. Her name is Agavana Oathbreaker, the Butcher of Burandamana. We think this formian, Jassk, was working for Agavana. We don’t know where Agavana is, but Jassk owns a music shop on Gaskar III, a planet in Near Space. I want you to go there, interrogate Jassk Beskask for Agavana Oathbreaker’s whereabouts, and bring her back to me — alive, if you can. I have some questions for her."

Penny was very interested in the greenhouse and plants, wondering about ingredients. Until it all became about bugs, of course. Still profitable bugs reduce a massive about of the ickiness that comes with them.

"Did any of the enemy attack force get killed, or heavily wounded?"

Ben frowns, dealing with mass murderers, even at one step removed, is a nasty business at best. "Understood Captain. We will do our best to complete the job quickly and with a minimum of fuss. Do you have any other information that might be of use to us?"

"Any pictures of the attackers from a camera? Descriptions of their species? Specifics about their gear?" Penny rattles off more questions, in case.


"We don't know the race or composition of the attackers, unfortunately," Eshovayo replies. "The video feeds were disabled during the assault - no doubt Jassk's handiwork - and they killed everyone that was in the targeted building. They were simple civilian workers with just a minor security contingent - this is a company that makes dye, after all. Consequently we don't believe any of the thieves were injured or killed."

The vesk conceals his anger poorly as one hand clinches into a fist.

"Agavana Oathbreaker is a former Veskarium soldier who betrayed her own people. Eight years ago, she deserted her unit, demanded the empire free hundreds of imprisoned criminals she claimed had been unjustly incarcerated, and when her request was denied, she unleashed hellfire toxin on the city of Burandamana. Hundreds of thousands of innocent people burned alive from that bioweapon. It took weeks for some of them to die. She has avoided capture for almost a decade. She knows how we think and how we operate. She won’t expect me to hire a bunch of outsiders like you."

He hands you a credstick (5000 Cr) and nods. "Jassk Beskask owns a shop called Sonic Future in Gaskari, on Gaskar III. They’re not a soldier, so you shouldn’t have any trouble getting them to talk."

"Alright, let's go bug hunting," Chase says, clenching her Fistigons for emphasis.


With no more questions for Captain Fireheart, you head back to your ship and break orbit for Gaskar III to track down a formian by the name of Jassk Beskask.

Drift travel to Gaskar III proves uneventful. The city of Gaskari was built around a colony ship filled with people leaving the Veskarium; its denizens constructed a temple of Weydan in the ship’s forward sections, followed by a thriving metropolis around it once the vessel settled at the western foothills of the Summer’s Mercy Mountains. It doesn't take much to locate the shop, Sonic Future. It's a small two-story building with living quarters on the second floor.

The shop isn't large and upon entering it, you can see that it's filled with various high-tech musical instruments and a couple of browsing aficionados. Behind the counter is a formian who looks up as you approach.

"Yes? Is there something I can help you locate today?" they ask. "I'm offering twenty percent off on Mako brand synthesizers and a coupon for two free lessons with every purchase."

"Yes there is." Ben says politely, motioning behind his back for Chase to block the exit. "We'd like your help locating Agavana Oathbreaker please. After-all, we can't have someone running around with that much hellfire toxin can we?"

Penny stops whisper chatting with Boots, and slide up next to the dashing Captain to lean over the counter "We also can be civil and nice to those sharing information, can't we captain? No need to be all broken fingers and memories you'll shy away from for the rest of your life."


That sounds more like an aid to Intimidate rather than Diplomacy. ;)

The formian steps back from the counter and away from you.

"Look, I don’t know what you’re talking about," they protest. "I’m a pacifist. But they’re not." They point toward the back room. The entrance to the room immediately erupts with gunfire as two robots wearing dusters, wide-brimmed hats, and bandoliers emerge, guns blazing. One construct bears the inscription "mk 2" on her forehead, just below the brim of her hat. The other's forehead reads "mk 4" instead.

The 'Mk 4' moves deftly across the counter and takes a shot at Boots with her sidearm. She misses, but turns an expensive looking digital harmonic into splinters of plastic.

Ben is shaken for 1 round. Map is updated. Everyone is up!

Penny knows Chase will barrel toward the GUNS so she concentrates on linking her mind with the reckless mechanic. Telepathically she tells her 'I'll see the one you are attacking movements a moment before they attack, and let you know.' she thinks this as she moves to behind something hopefully solid... like Ben :)

Predict Foe on whichever one Chase goes to attack, should give her concealment against them.

With the explosion of digital harmonics around her, Boots protests "Hey now!" while quickly pulling out her pistol and taking aim at the mark four. As she feints and then fires, she asks "Wonder what happened ta Mark 3?"

F Human Inventor 2|

The prospect of a deadly bioweapon being unleashed sends Katherine into a deep reverie, punctuated by occasional musings on whether a counter-weapon might be possible. This lasts right up until the music shop, where the complete lack of organisation shakes her out of her stupor just in time for fighting to break out again.

"Really?" She asks in exasperation, doing as her captain says and focusing on the same robot as the others. Her dart is tipped with some special nanites she'd been working on as retaliation towards Chase if the mechanic ever tries another prank. This should prove to be a good field test.

Needler: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 1 = 231d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Biohack the robot to give it -2 AC if the attack hits.


GM Die Rolls:

Mark 2 Sniper Rifle vs Chase KAC 18: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Sniper Rifle Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Ben's shot is wide, but Boots' pistol draws a shower of sparks and metal bits from the 'Mk 4'. Chase follows up by charging the bot and reducing it quickly to scrap metal with her industrial fists. With one bot down, Kathering sends a payload of nanobots into the 'Mk 2's circuitry and Penny gives the mechanic a defensive edge against the remaining opponent.

Round 2

"HUMAN MISCREANT! YOU SHALL PAY IN SPADES FOR YOUR VIOLENCE AGAINST M' PARD'NER!" the remaining bot declares as she turns and draws a sniper rifle up to her shoulder and takes aim against Chase. The shot zings just over Chase's shoulder, though.

One bot down! Everyone is up!

Katherine can't help but mutter her agreement as she reloads and fires another needle into the creatures neck, although this one is not primed with volatile nanites. Just a good old titanium tip.

Since the crew had everything well in hand, Penny just leans out and shoots the robot instead of using her precious magical powers.

Having not been shot, Ben seems determined to return the favor as his rifle shot draws sparks from a high-end, oil-filled, rune-covered speaker on the far wall. Boots catches the 'Mk 2' off-guard and puts a round in her. Chase charges and sends pieces of her flying with a blow from piston-powered fists. The bot staggers as she struggles to continue the battle, but Katherine finishes her off with a final shot between the optical sensors.

"MISCREANT HUMAN! YOU WILL NOT ... Zxxtttz!"

With a creak and a crash the 'Mk 2' collapses in a inert pile.

Combat Ends!

As pieces of the destroyed speaker fall crashing to the floor with the tinkling sound of broken oil vials, silence finally settles on the instrument store, now empty of customers.

"Even if I had insurance, this still wouldn't count as a good day in my info-sphere log," the formian says, rising up from behind the counter, holding up their manipulative digits defensively.

The bots have between them; second skin armor, precision coil rifle, subzero hail pistol, tactical sword cane, thinplate armor, red star nova rifle, tactical starknife, frag grenades I (x2).

Boots hoots and hollers before hopping on top of the fallen bot and yelling yelling "WWWOOOOOOOWEEE! MISS-CREE-ENTS, y'all!"

After a celebratory dance, she hops down and circles Ben "Hold up. Somethin's amissin'. Ben here, he ain't been shot? Was that an illusion we just took out?"

Penny had been on her way to heal Ben "Second time too. It is starting to get suspicious." Penny hmmms? in suspicion. "Anyway." she turns her attention to the shopkeeper "Our formian friend here was going to provide us with all the information we need on Oathbreaker... correct?" she smiles sweetly.

"And since they're coming with us there'll be plenty of time for us to have these conversations." Ben says pleasantly. "I'm sure Chase can help you tidy up so we can leave sooner." He gestures to the mechanic and her fistigons, just in case his veiled threat wasn't clear enough.

"Now. Let's get going. The sooner we leave the sooner you'll be able to get back to your lovely store."

Looking through the items, Talah takes the subzero pistol and stashes it on her hip before picking up both frag grenades. She starts whistling to herself while she juggles the two items likes balls while Ben "reasons" in his pleasant voice.
