The winter wolf walks nimbly onto the ice rink. His hearing is still rather sharp. He looks at Astrid and snarls: No dinosaurs… but there will be WOLVES!

The card game is called Preferans, a popular Russian card game best described as a sophisticated version of whist. The wager is 99 sp worth of assorted coins and hastily wagered pocket contents, and a moderate potion of disguise (frost giant).

The villagers split into two teams for the hockey game. Seymon joins Astrid's team. The winter wolf and tough old Vera are on the other team. Both imposing figures in their own right. Seymon elbows Astrid. I will be your ally this time because I know you will lose to me at Hopka later.

There will be 3 rounds of each activity. We'll run it like combat rounds. You can roll for each round or sit out. If your group can win 2/3 rounds, you will have impressed your new friends at that task!

I’ll move us on. There is nothing at stake as only one person needs to win at cards and it has been 24 hours. Hope that’s OK, Dranald.

Ded and Osip grumble good-naturedly as Rex and Ukh take their money and their potion of Frost Giant Disguise. Beginner's luck, surely… or perhaps Quinn and Feiya are helping them shark us!

However, Astrid's shot outside goes wide. It just wasn't meant to be. Seymon tries to give her some encouragement. Well, at least we made that evil old wolf feel young again, he says as the old wolf bounds off and Vera does a victory lap, her headscarf fluttering in the air like a victory flag.

Now it is time for a strong drink! Come. It is the grand finale!

❄ ❄ ❄

Everyone troops out to a snow-covered field next to the great hall, carrying the benches and tables with them, while Ded Shurin passes out small cups of a clear spirit — vodka.

To participate, down a few shots of vodka, and then to dance!

This dance is known as the Hopak, a Ukrainian Cossack dance involving numerous jumps, squats, and kicks. Ded Shurin comments, “As the old saying goes, the grave calls if you drink; the grave calls if you don’t.”

If you want to participate in the competition but not drink, you will be given a heavy wooden log to strap to your back instead, in the interests of fairness.

Seymon demonstrates. Watch! He downs a large shot of vodka, does a sequence of squatting kicks in the center of the dance circle, then leaps high into the air, touching both toes! He lands gracefully on his feet to the applause of the villagers. Now, you try!

No magical enhancements allowed. This is about natural skill & training… and holding your liquor! Participation is optional.

We will have 3 rounds. Each round, make a DC 17 Fortitude save that represents holding your liquor or carrying your log. If you fail, you will take a –2 circumstance penalty to all checks for the rest of the dance (you can skip the check after failing once). You must then make a DC 20 Acrobatics, Athletics, or Performance check to pass to the next round.

Rex kicks his heels, and so does his goblin friend. Both seem to have iron gullets… one from the gambling hall, perhaps, and one from… being a goblin, or an alchemist? or both?

Dranald can’t seem to keep up and needs a break. Quinoline is letting the vodka get to her head and stumbles into a snowdrift… so warm! Vera pulls her out.

Astrid also feels the effects of the vodka, but it only improves her skillz.

Vera drops too, and puts a blanket over Ogthup before passing out.

Only Astrid, Rex, and Ukh remain… and of course, Seymon himself. He does an extra-large shot. No one can keep up with Seymon. He is the best Hopak dancer in Zharchovsk Town. Do you dare to try? I would not think less of you for giving up! He does a backflip followed by the highest jump yet! He then squats, kicking his legs out with crossed arms… grinning at you all the while.

A Frosty Mug and a Heated Dance!

DC 17 Fortitude for everyone but Astrid, save then a DC 20 Acrobatics, Athletics, or Performance.

Astrid thinks for a moment.

"Although come to think of it, you probably know some sort of tricksy alchemical concoction to cure hangovers so carry on I guess."

Rex is able to keep up with Seymon, greatly impressing the villagers! Nicely done. Only one PC needed to succeed!

Seymon slaps the gnome on the shoulder. This one is a card shark, and leaps like a true Cassock. I would like to visit your riverboat casino someday, my friend!

Eventually, the celebration breaks up, and you are escorted to one of the nearby homes to sleep in family’s loft.

Inside is an old, hunchbacked woman of surpassing ugliness. A chicken pecks at some bugs at her feet. The old woman regards you with a dubious gaze.

You. You I think, are worth watching. Don’t disappoint me.”

The old woman then hefts herself to her feet and brushes past you, grabbing her hen along the way. Art for this NPC on Slide 1.

The goblin stays doubtful.

Watching? Yes, I can watch in darkness. I like watching the new spring arriving. I watch the details when I'm crafting. But what am I now worth watching?
