Your journey begins aboard Flawless Diamond. Having set for Jalmeray from Quantum about a week ago it has been rather uneventful. There was a storm yesterday but the rain has subsided and it is now rather sunny out with calm seas for last day of your journey. Captain Thernalore Vamys calls you to assemble on deck as you approach the small islet Wavebreak Haven.

"I said keep it steady!" Captain Thernalore Vamys barks at the undine workers on the shore as the Flawless Diamond begins to drift. Wavebreak Haven is small, with only a few dozen buildings visible further inland. The dockworkers panic as the ship’s hull collides with the pier, battered bushels of palm fronds failing to completely cushion the impact. “Now look,” Thernalore leans over the rail and inhales deeply, ready to chastise the inexperienced crew, before she sees a familiar face approaching the ship.

“The Society will reimburse you for any damages, Captain.” The authority of Venture-Captain Rashmivati Melipdra puts an end to the turmoil. The middle-aged Vudrani woman carries herself with the upright posture of a martial artist as she moves to meet the ship, though she does have trouble finding purchase with her cane as she crosses the sand. Meleeka Sanvara, a muscular monk in tan robes, runs ahead of the venture-captain with a gangplank.

“Greetings, Pathfinders. As you can see, we are in dire need of experienced volunteers. But I’m getting ahead of myself.” Meleeka helps the venture-captain onto the deck of the ship before stepping aside to allow several dockhands room to begin unloading cargo. "I am Meleeka, and this is Venture-Captain Rashmivati Melipdra. And who has the society sent to aid us?" she asks turning to the group.

Please introduce yourselves, also this would be a good time to let me know your default exploration activity. I'll generally assume you're doing the default unless you indicate otherwise. And of course you can change your default as we go on if you so desire.

Art has been added for Meleeka and VC Rashmivati. You can find this in the "journal entries" section of the foundry sidebar. it looks like a book. here's a screenshot of where to find them. This is where any future art/handouts will be going.

Katrina had been 'entertained' by watching the chaos unfold as the ship docked although her mind had been on other things, judging by the frown that was on her face.

She's a female halfling, currently dressed in white shirt, short pants, and barefoot. A light green breast band can be made out under the shirt. Her weapons and other equipment on the deck beside her. The only jewelry is a Desnian butterfly pendant.

When addressed by the senior monk and Venture Captain, she snaps to attention. Katrina Caldwell ma'am she says. Circus performer, acrobat and escape artist, at your service. I'm good at sneaking into places and getting outta tight spots. Sooooo .... what's the problem?

Katrina usually goes into hide and go sneak mode

She then picks up a Wand of Mage Armour and attempts to trick it into working.

Captain Vamys stares daggers at Nina as she appears on deck. In return, Nina half-draws an actual dagger and glares right back at him.

"You two keep that psychopath away from me," he announces to the Venture-Captain and Meleeka, before carefully turning his back on Nina.

Nina is a Vidric human, although her glowing eyes suggest an aasimar heritage. She wears a grey, stained cloak that smells of the Puddles district of Absalom; but her posture and mannerism suggest she wasn't raised there.

Son stands in the back preferring to let others speak first. The very under-ratedly attractive Tien-Dan man stands roughly 5 foot 6 with a shaved bald head. He carries very little on his person. In fact you only see his walking stick, his breastplate, and a backpack. You do notice a few tattoos of large serpent creatures on his arms as well as a small bronze scale on his forehead. "I am called Son, humble merchant and adventurer. I am a proficient warrior as well." He says twirling said walking stick a little bit. He raises an eyebrow at the exchange between Nina and the captain though. "Is there something I am missing?"

Katrina whispers up to Son. She's in a bad mood about something and I think it's something deeply personal. I nearly got slapped when I tried flirting so I'm leaving her alone until she wants to talk. Fortunately I'm good at ducking.

Nina sees Son and Katrina whispering about her. She sighs, and realizes that she has been a little bit of a ... psychopath. She straightens up, and walks over.

"I apologize for my temper," she says. "There's more to my presence on this mission than just Society business. Six weeks ago, my husband, the emir of Jaribuni, was murdered in his sleep. I believe my four sons escaped the blade, but I have neither confirmation that they're alive nor that they're dead. Every night, I send dream messages to them. Last night, my youngest son responded. He was wearing the Vudrani robes that Meleeka wears, and cried out to me."

"I was," Nina purses her lips, "very eager to get to Jalmeray. Before I knew he had been chartered by the Pathfinder Society, I may have ... slightly ... threatened to gut our captain like a dead fish if he didn't take me to Jalmeray."

Ouch Katrina replies. And I'm sorry for your loss. I can't understand exactly how you feel but ... hey ... if there's anything I can do to help, then please, let me know. I .... haven't had anyone that close to me .... well ... maybe Reeta ... and I know I'd be devastated if something happened to her .... sooo ... yeah She looked up at Nina looking a bit awkward, not knowing what to say next but her intent is clear. She wants to give whoever did it a good seeing to - and help find Nina's sons.

Son nods in understanding when Katrina tries to explain then turns to Nina. "I too am sorry for your loss. But at the risk of sounding insensitive, I believe that threatening potential allies is a bad business decision. You should aim your rage at more deserving targets, such as whoever is foolish enough to get in the way of whatever mission we have here." He lets out a small smirk.

Nina curtsies apologetically, or as well as she can while wearing explorer's clothing, and goes to find the captain.

Greezgux snaps his staff onto the deck in an attempt to steady himself. The cowled goblin was cover head to toe in bird bones and skulls. A very thin framed goblin peers out from beneath his darkened hood and frowns. "At least your sons may yet live." He thinks back on how his whole clan perished while he had been away. If only they had followed his advice. His thoughts diminished as his stomach growls very loudly.

He cups a hand to his abdomen. "I am Greezgux. Shaman of the Boneswarm Clan."

He offers his name awkwardly as it appears "time" to do so.

A tall, broad-shouldered if hunched-over dwarf with thinning grey hair, he seems to be visibly uncomfortable with conversation, or, if he is in fact listening, it would be difficult to tell, the only active gesture that he is doing so being a thick finger entering and exiting his ear periodically, which you might swore made a squeaking sound at the friction.

He seems to hover not-quite-tangentally to the "circle" this group is unconsciously forming into, small-talking as they wait for the captain.

Kang is a tanned Tian man, slight in figure and awkward in demeanour when around other people. (Yet, you might have noticed on the journey that when his self-consciousness fades away rather completely when he doesn't realise people are looking at him.) He is rather well-groomed yet careless about his appearance at the same time - hair is neatly combed back but loose strands are sticking out, and he doesn't seem to have shaven in days. The robes he wears is rather fine and exquisite, but is wrinkled at many places.

He steps down from the ship, looking rather uncomfortable with the sea voyage, still green round the edges. He presses his hand to his mouth, determine to keep the contents of his stomach where it is meant to be, inside.

Once he is sure that is the case, he introduces himself in a rather mousy voice, "Um, my turn? My name is Zhao Kang, but call me Kang. I originate from near Goka, but that was many seasons ago now." He looks rather whimsical when he says that.

He would Avoid Notice, unless the team is in some ruins, etc in which case he would Detect Magic.

Knab represses a smile at being only the second-most awkward person here.

Kang can see him counting on his thick fingers - one hand gripping the wrist of the other both wrapped around his back - as he looks first at Nina, then at Son, then at Greezgux, and finally back at him - mumbling something to himself a barely audible "Four dedicated arcanists...". He finishes his lookaround sizing up the nimble Katrina, then shifts his weight, and unlocking his wrist, settles a single hand on his clan dagger, and a second hand thumb tucked into the large clip at the front of his trousers.

Seeing Kang see him, he smiles back through an unmaintained and incomplete set of teeth worn greatly with age: A sheepish grin.

Venture-Captain Rashmivati Melipdra smiles warmly though she looks puzzled at the commotion. She stands by and lets the situation seem to defuse itself and for introductions to continue. Meleeka similarly stands by but seems eager for introductions to get over with, showing a slight hint of worry on her face. Both acknowledge everyone when speaking, though as soon as Zhao finishes, Melipdra is quick to begin. "Excellent, thank you so much for coming, and yes, I too am glad your son lives Nina." She walks into the center of the group. "I wish we had more time for pleasantries but our situation here has become increasingly more dire. The Society has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Monastery of Unbreaking Waves since--"

Suddenly a scream from the shore interrupts Melipdra. A porter claws at the sand as he is dragged into the sea. A battle cry drowns out the victim's screams as several scaly raiders emerge, charging with teeth and spears. The shore erupts into chaos, and the Venture-Captain calls out over the din of battle to establish order, "Pathfinders, Melipdra turns and gestures toward the carnage. "Protect the porters! Meleeka and I will lead the monks in defense of the ship and stop the sea devils from reaching the settlement! Hurry!!"

Looking to the shore, the group sees four identical looking Sea Devils, and a fifth angry-looking Sea Devil who unleashed the Battle-Cry. Art for both 'Sea Devil' and 'Angry Sea Devil' are now in the foundry Journal

Everyone has 1 Hero point to start, and if we have any GM glyphs now would be the time to hand those extra hero points out

Son's mind raced as the scaly intruders made their presence known. He looks towards the dock hands who were in over their heads and made a decision as he departed the boat. He channels his draconian blood and spits a bolt of electricity that arcs through Sea Devil 2 and Sea Devil 4. The hope is to draw their attention with something flashy.

Sea Devil 2 notices Son rushing in, however, the sea devil isn't able to dodge out of the way in time. Sea Devil 4 was so focused on one of the porters that it failed to see anything coming. The electric arc strikes it perfectly and leaves the creature severely injured. The Sea Devil then reels around to shift it's focus to Son. 2 failed, 4 crit failed

As the excitement of the battle fills Kang, he draws himself to his full height and the image of the bumbling wizard falls away as he stands tall and focused. "You will not harm the innocents!"

He gestures with his staff, muttering arcane words of power, as a small fiery bead flies off, landing in the midst of 3 of the sea devils. In midair, it suddenly explodes silently in a huge ball of fire. (Area as marked on map, affecting 3, 4 and Angry.)

Almost immediately after, the staff in his hand flies off towards one of the sea devils. It misses and strikes the water instead, but almost immediately, boomerangs back into his hand.

Zhao's fireball engulfs the three sea devils and when the flames clear only the angry sea devil remains. crit fail on 3 to kill in one hit, success on 4 to finish it, and success on angry.

Sea Devil 5 run towards the porters and bites the one that was being dragged to sea previously. In doing so it seems to get into quite the frenzy; the porter now lay unconscious.

Under cover of Kang's ball of fire, Knab races across the dock in slow motion on sturdy legs, huffing and heaving, to arrive just before the fallen dockworker, and begins reaching his hand into a pouch...

The Angry Sea Devil has different plans... It runs towards Knab and hurls it's trident perfectly to skewer Knab. crit, 18 dmg, 1d4 persist bleed. The sight of this almost stirs it into a frenzy. The Angry Sea Devil then pulls on rope attached to the barbed trident to move Knab closer. Athletics success vs Knabs fort DC to move Knab 10 ft. Seeing the opportunity, Sea Devil 2 runs in and tries to strike Knab with it's longspear but somehow missed.

Katrina just grabs her short sword and races down the gangplank (move, move) just managing to get within range of Sea Devil 5 to take a swing at it.

The irony of Nina's words do not escape the dwarf - having been harpooned out of reach against his will - and he casts back at her a pained grin through bloodied and missing teeth, pleased with the aasimar's dark humor - "now I have her attention!" he thinks to himself, as he is drawn closer to the angry devil...

GM - is being "skewered" in all ways mechanically identical to being grabbed? (Specifically, the flat check to manipulate actions?)

Its not quite like being grabbed. No flat check to manipulate. It would prevent you from moving further away, but you have freedom to move within the reach of the roped harpoon. Meaning right now it has you at 5', you could move as long as you stay within 5'. Or you can break free. Or you can choose to ignore it.

Thanks! that looks like GM error - it seems that the order of the tokens placed on the map makes them 'higher' on the layer. I had all the baddies on the map first so that's why the names weren't showing above the other tokens. i THINK i have fixed it now (by adding new versions of the tokens in the same spot so they are 'on top')

Nina and Greezgux move in closer, while Son leaps into combat and swings his staff at the Angry Sea Devil. The first strike lands squarely in the Sea Devil's side, though the second strike falls short. hit and miss

Zhao's staff flies across the shore and hits the Angry Sea Devil on the head. It's at this point that the Sea Devil starts showing signs of injury. Hit, and bloodied

Sea Devil 5 drops it's longspear and attempts to strike back at Katrina. It bites once and swings it's claws twice but misses the nimble halfling on each attempt 3 misses

Among all the commotion some of the porters start to run inland out of danger.

Knab strikes the Angry Sea devil twice, dealing a solid and near fatal blow. two hits!. As Knab's wound bleeds, the Sea Devil looks noticeably reinvigorated and goes into a frenzy. It drop's it's trident and instead tries to bite Knab. It's jaws crunch down on Knab's leg and a claw strike then knocks Knab to the ground. 2 hits, 29 damage to put Knab in dying 1. The Angry Sea Devil then rushes across the shore towards Greezgux; completely ignoring the armored cleric next to it.

Sea Devil 2 steps towards Katrina and tries to bite her but narrowly misses. It then claws at her but again can't seem to strike her. 2 misses

...he jolts awake in the sand, wondering where he is, then suddenly remembers he was defending dockworkers from a viscous Sea Devil attack, and looking across the beach for "Angry", is just in time to see Greezgux bite his head off - the disgusting display causing his stomach to turn, he spills it's contents onto the shore - then readies himself to stand, bolstered by, if overcome with, positive energy, squinting as the lights of two gods he rejects blind his atheist third eye!

Kang continues moving forward, his commanding presence slowly fading as the enemies fall. With only two of the offending creatures left, Kang shifts to his cantrips instead, releasing an arc of electricity between the two sea devils.

Most of the arc flies across the shore and hits Sea Devil 5 leaving it look rather injured. The arc then hits Sea Devil 2 and though it is only a minor zap, kills the creature. Sea Devil 5 failed for 9 dmg and is bloodied, Sea Devil 2 succeeded but had 4 hp left and dies

Sea Devil 5 shift's it's attention to the wizard that zapped it. The frenzied sea devil rushes across shore and bite's Zhao's arm, followed by a claw strike that fails to connect. jaws hit for 12 piercing, claws missed

The electric shocks further harm the Sea Devil, and a myriad of punching, bashing, and biting finishes off the lone sea devil. As you fell the last sea devil, Meleeka finishes off her opponent with a fiery punch.

A few moments later, several other Vudrani monks arrive as well as VC Melipdra and Rirzik, a male undine gnome monk. VC Melipdra begins working
on treating the unconscious porter and Rirzik reports that the remaining sea devils have been defeated and the settlement is safe.

“Only one? You’ve been bested, Meleeka,” Melipdra finishes dressing a wounded porter while gesturing toward her assistant. The martial artist drops the smoldering remains of a sea devil’s torso into the sand and returns to the pier to rummage through the scattered crates. The venture-captain continues the briefing. “Like I was saying, the Society has enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship with the Monastery of Unbreaking Waves. The local undines have made great strides in rebuilding the monastery since we defeated the undead responsible for the school’s disappearance.

"But the tradition now faces a new threat. An incursion of sea devils is attacking the monastery. You might know them as sahuagin. I was told that the monastery needed our help, but to see a shiver of this size make it to Wavebreak Haven means the situation must already be dire. We must come to the aid of the Unbreaking Waves, now!” She gestures to the surf, where a short figure is soothing several half-horse, half-fish creatures. “Rirzik here will escort you by hippocampus to the underwater monastery, where Grandmaster Remendi is organizing the resistance.”

Rirzik steps forward, smoothing his turquoise eyebrows, and takes a deep breath, “I have enough hippocampi for everyone. They were a little spooked by all the noise, but I calmed them down.”

“And the Society came through with the supplies!” Meleeka interrupts, hauling several large bags across her shoulders as she rejoins the group on the beach. “There are enough potions and fins for each of you. I wish I could join you, but as my fire burns brighter on dry land, I think I’ll be better off seeing to the defense up here.”

Melipdra rests a hand on her agent’s shoulder in reassurance. “There is more to a battlefield than the front lines. Support our allies on the shore however you can, and remember to not lose sight of the bigger picture. Helping our allies means helping to preserve a still largely undocumented tradition. We must not let the Unbreaking Waves become another casualty of this senseless violence.”

VC Melipdra offers the party 2 lesser elixirs of life, and also a scrimshaw whistle made out dragon turtle ivory. this collectively represents 2 treasure bundles

Meleeka also unpacks some supplies from the bags and motions the group over. She offers the group swim fins and also potions of water breathing. "Just return what you don't use once this crisis is over."

  • Two new art journals ready: "Rirzik" and "Hippocampus"
  • Also new journal for "Underwater Rules summary" Read this if you haven't already.
  • The group gained 2 lesser elixirs of life (who carries?)
  • Each PC and familiar gets 4 potions of water breathing. If you do not need these (Because you have means to breathe underwater) you can decline your 4 potions of water breathing for a single lesser elixir of life.
  • Everyone gets a pair of swim fins
