An awed hush descends as Rose mentions taking down the Iron Lash, and after that the villagers regard the group with newfound respect. The old man talking to Marius nods, getting to his feet. "Aye, I can show you the way, but I won't get close to the pumphouse. By foot it takes the better part of a day to reach it, but I have a barge that gets us there a lot faster."

As they travel, he turns out to be a bit of a history buff. "That pump is very, very old. More than a thousand years old. Some mage built it to drain the marsh and turn it into farmland, but the spell wore off, ehh... four, five generations ago. We replaced the mechanism with one pulled by oxen, but that one also broke."

As they approach the area, he gestures, one hand on the barge pole. "See, up on that little hill, that's the Sandaris cemetery. They were an old noble family who ruled these parts before the Betonys earned their title in the Shining Crusade." He points a little to the left of the hill. "And that's the pumphouse. Be careful, the waters are treacherous and there's something lurking in them."

Marshland and shallow, stagnant ponds surround the pump house for miles in every direction, ringed with festering carcasses of livestock. A sturdy stone building straddles the berm separating an algae-cloaked marsh from the stagnant canal waters. A long sluice looks as though it might have once accommodated a mill, while a stone walkway wraps around the southern portion of the building. Moss almost completely obscures the slate roof. The still waters reflect the oranges, pinks and purples of the approaching sunset.

It took about 2 hours to get here by barge.

Konstiantina leans against the barge's railing, clad once more in her military raiment, and enjoys the simple passage through the landscape. She takes her time in drinking in the atmosphere, gazing thoughtfully over farmland and the occasional copse of trees, or down at the muddy water as she allows herself to really arrive here, to mentally and spiritually situate herself in this new corner of the world they've claimed.

"What can you tell us about the beast?" she asks, turning on one elbow to look over at the old man. "Anybody report what it looks like, how it hunts, anything at all? Is it nocturnal? How long has it been here? How far does it range?"

Gazing back meditatively at the pump house, she frowns. "Can't say I'm excited to wade into those waters looking for something to fight. We'll be inviting an ambush, and will have difficulty preventing its escape if we wound it badly enough. What do you think of provoking it to attack us on the hill itself, or our taking up defensive positions around the pumphouse and luring it toward us?"

Rose shivers at the thought of something dragging her under the unfathomable waters of the marsh, never to return, and pulls her cloak tighter around herself as Konstiantina and Marius give their respective assessments. "...Yes, If at all possible, I suggest drawing it into an ambush of sorts, out of the water if we can help it. Such as with the slightly over date cow I brought. Let's say the town butcher was very happy with our patronage," she remarks, as she makes a face at the smell of it. "Should that fail or we need something else... well, I made other arrangements too. Let's just hope we won't need them.".

The paladin nods with sober gravity as she lets her gaze wander over the swamp flats. Its impossible to divine from the deck of the barge how deep some of the pools out there in the flooded farmland mighty go, but still she tries to get a sense, to suss out if their quarry will be able to actually swim through the mire or if it will instead be forced to wade.

Lotti shakes her head as sighs as the young folks charge off into the swamp without considering the consequences if they don’t come back. Or what that not-consideration looks like to the people they’ve just introduced themselves to - how they might appear as vain attention seekers, or flighty aristocrats, or just plain careless with both their own lives and the lives of others.

“Honorable Tribune, let us put these taxes and requests and other supplies into order before my Lord departs for the pump house.” Her voice is slightly louder than necessary, pitched a bit deeper to give an air of authority. “That way, should the worst occur, our journey here and the support we have brought for Stachys will not have been in vain.”

——————————————————

On the boat, Lotti has her hands full trying to keep Wobblekins from “investigating” Rose’s “supplies”. “There is a lovely bowl of fish and cream waiting for you back at the estate, Your Grace. This really is quite unbecoming of you. What will your new friends think when you come home smelling like a stew that’s been left by the side of the road for two weeks?”

The old man shakes his head at Konstiantina's questions. "Nobody knows, miss. We call it The Lurker on account of it, well - lurking, but no-one alive has seen it. Been here a few years." He lets the pole drop deep into the water, then wedges it into the muddy bottom to slow down the barge. "This is as far as I go, you can walk from here. I'll pull back a little and wait for you until moonrise." What happens if they don't return by then is left unspoken.

Konstiantina can see that the marsh waters south of the pump house are only 4 feet deep, while the canal north of it is deeper, perhaps 10 feet.

Konstiantina leaps adroitly onto the embankment when the bargeman gets close, and her blade slips free of its scabbard with a whisper. Its length gleams in the sunset, a sliver of salmon pink and blood orange that could have been pulled clear of the sun's heart. For a long moment she simpy stands there, alert and gazing out over the marsh, and then with a subtle frown, turns to study the pump house itself.

"Single file, I suppose," she says gravely once they're all atop the embankment, and then leads the way, moving warily, in no rush, pausing occasionally to simply watch and listen. "The marsh itself isn't too deep - looks to be about four feet as opposed to the canal's ten. Let us hope our quarry isn't literally invisible."

Leading the way up to the pumphouse.

Once at the pump house, Rose gives it a critical look, noting the large sway of watery marsh to both the north and southwest. It seemed approaching from the east was the only overland way to do it. Did the monster live inside the construction, or outside? That would either make luring it out difficult or the approach more dangerous, in her estimation - either wasn't ideal... but who knew until they actually went and checked?

"All right. How do we handle this? Seems like there's two narrow staircases inside, one right ahead over land one to the north, though we'd have to jump there or wade through a bit of marsh. If we don't want to go inside at all, should we place the bait outside, and just hide and wait?"

Meanwhile, Rose alternates between watching their surroundings intently and aiming an equally tense gaze towards a flat, longish box she'd produced from her backback somewhere during the stakeout. Eventually, she sighs softly and swallows her nerves. "She'd probably grant me permission..." she mumbles as she opens it. Then, she very slowly and carefully begins coating a couple of bolts with a stange mix of powders contained within, putting them aside afterwards to seemingly dry on a piece of cloth.

Only when Lisa speaks up does she interrupt this task once begun. "A shopping spree in Stachys?" she asks, amused. "What exactly are we buying then, Miss Lombardi? Cows? Lotti detects several magical auras, while Konstiantina feels the presence of a single evil entity. It is difficult to find track in the soggy, water-saturated ground, but Marius spies what seems to be a poorly-hidden nook by the northern stairs.

As the group banters, a soft plop can be heard from the canal, and several large bubbles escape to the surface. A creature emerges slowly, shaking itself like a dog - if said dog had three legs, a huge fang-studded mouth and three tentacles protruding from its sides, one of them tipped with three eyes that turn towards the intruders as a long, slobbering tongue licks its lips.

Knowledge dungeoneering DC 14:
This is an otyugh, a scavenger that usually lurks in cesspools and sewers. Otyughs are surprisingly intelligent, and often quite eager to form alliances with those who offer them a steady supply of delicious diversions in the form of offal and waste. Most otyughs understand the fact that other creatures find them unpleasant and hideous, but few really care. While they usually carry many diseases, they are immune to them.

The creature lunges towards the bait left by Rose.

With a little more time to focus, Lotti discerns five distinct magical auras, but none of them above a faint shimmer in the fabric of the world. Konstiantina senses seven instances of evil, with the strongest one radiating a moderately powerful aura.

The otyugh stops with its mouth open above the meat, all three eyes turning towards Marius. Although they have no lids, there is a distinct sensation of narrowing.

"As for cheese," she continues to the creature - but stops to consider. What was cheese? Technically, an extract from thinly sliced young calf stomach, vinegar, water and salt, added to milk that was left to age at least sixty days. Too much information to the average person probably, but for a scavenger monster? "...It's probably best to let you taste it. Here, I have some in my rations..." she decides, worried about mental collateral, and tosses it a clump of well-aged cheese.

"Did you just indirectly encourage it to call itself 'Cheese'?" Rose remarks, somewhat amused. "Remind me not to let you name the children."

Seeing the Otyugh distracted with existential matters and the others begin to move, Rose raises her crossbow again. "So, are we checking out that supposed hidden cache first or are we heading straight in? Perhaps we can trade some more cheese to Cheese to have it take out the contents for us before taking that walk - if there are any?" she suggests, but settles on following the knights' lead.

If no one objects to this plan, Rose would offer the Otyugh some more food in return for it gathering whatever was in that hidden corner and giving it to us before heading in.

Seeing their perhaps new friend leave, Rose calls out to the frontline. "Wait. Let's make sure there's no trap around the entrance. Konstiantina, could you keep track of if whatever is inside is moving while I search?"

She makes her way forward after, kneeling and leaning down to peer to carefully inspect the immediate area behind the ruined door, fully engrossed in her work.

Rose would do a take 20 on perception for searching the door. If that is not possible i'll roll below.

Konstiantina raises her blade and grips the hilt with both hands. She draws a deep breath, and as the last rays of the dying sun paint the marshland a lurid palette of crimsons, umbers, and burgundy, she intones a soft prayer.

"Honorable Iomedae, help us to trust you in these times of uncertainty. Let us rest on your valorous example. When we are weak and overcome with fear and doubt, help us to feel your presence. Remind in our inner hearts your words to fear not; to rest assured that today you promise that you will fight our battles."

Those words spoken, she steps up to the door, and with her inner senses yet alert to the presence of evil, passes inside once Rose gives her nod.

Reading an action to cast Daylight when most opportune, using Detect Evil still to indicate to everyone where the presences are if hidden. I also have Dodging panache readied as an Immediate Action to 5 foot step away, giving me a +4 to my AC to avoid the first attack.

Rose cannot see any traps around the doorway. Scraps of rotted wood hang off the rusted hinges, and the floor is covered with green slime and dead vegetation.

As Konstiantina steps through, her dark-adjusted vision discerns six humanoid forms that seem to be stirring from sleep. Their emaciated forms, barely covered by vestiges of rags, and the indescribable stench coming off them quickly clue her in as to their undead nature. One of them turns its head towards her and growls, baring its teeth.

That gets the others' attention, and with frightening speed they all rush at the paladin.

From the moldy floor rises ghastly creatures, emmaciated and foul, and for a moment Konstiantina freezes, the sight of bared yellowed fangs and ropey gray flesh, of beady black eyes devoid of all humanity and their awful hunger filling her with dark, shocked fear.

But then she feels her goddess' presence, the bulwark of her faith, and raises her hand so that blazing, glorious sunlight bursts forth from the pebble she tosses into the room, filling the rancid pumphouse, as warm and shining as that of a beautiful summer's day.

"Come, then," she whispers as she steps back through the doorway and to one side. "Come to us so that we may grant you peace."

And with that her longsword blazes to life, as if in communion with the daylight, its wicked length radiating golden fire as she feels her goddess's blessing as never before.

Round 2

One ghoul rushes forward, only to slip on the magical butter and fall prone purple, while the one that had already fallen scrambles to its feet with impatient growls, navigating the area of the spell and bursting through the doorway. The others rush forward as well, but there is little they can do save claw at the rotting frame with long, black nails and scream. "Mine! Feed! Mine!"

I'll delay until after Konstiantina as there's a decent chance green dies between her and Marius' turns, which would allow safe firing.

Hiding behind Konstiantina, Rose quietly nods at Marius' additional information and is about to turn and fire, when, in the bright light of the Aasimar's spell, she is barely able to spot a pool of water in the ghouls' room beyond.

Having an idea, she takes a deep breath and places a hand on her throat as she peers at it intently.

The next moment, there are sloshing sounds heard from the water pool, as if a large creature was breaking or about to break from the surface! "Hullo, friends. Thank you for all the food, but now I'm really, really hungry! Please lie there while I eat you all, okay? I wonder what ghouls taste like..." The voice of the unnamed Otyugh follows suit, as it is about to snack upon the unsuspecting undead!?

Mockingbird (Ex): The vigilante can mimic almost any sort of voice, or even animal calls and sound effects, and he can throw his voice at a distance. This functions similarly to a combination of the ghost sound, ventriloquism, and vocal alteration spells. A vigilante must be at least 5th level to choose this talent. In this case, she mimics the sounds of an impending Otyugh betrayal in an attempt to confuse the ghouls and/or redirect attention from us.

After speaking, she quickly steps out of cover and fires at the one ghoul she saw not prone on the ground. Coincidentally, also the one closest to the water pool. Blue.
