Konstiantina moves away, and drifts through the ragged cloud, touching a shoulder here, murmuring a blessing there, and if needed, laying on hands for those nursing persistent or recent wounds. As she goes, in select moments, she speaks a little more with different individuals, asking gently where they came from, what brought them here, where they hope to go next.

Gently and lightly fishing for the answers that Gurta seems so intent on avoiding.

She frowns at the questions coming from Marius. "We ain't from around here. Nothing wrong with Stachys, just... there's nothing there that might interest folk like you, I reckon." She shifts the topic of conversation, nodding at their carriage. "You said you had some food to trade? You seem good folk, so we'll give you a discount." She looks over her shoulder, then lowers her voice conspiratorially. "And perhaps you're interested in some - 'special' wares, eh? The magical kind?"

"I brought a few crates of food, yes. I wasn't originally intending to trade them away but if it helps you, we can probably get local replacements," Rose answers, then gives a polite smile. "Magical items, you say? Hm. Well, it would depend on what exactly they are, and whether we can afford them. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to take a look either way."

She would remain alert for any danger and would insist on remaining in the open in this imprompty market of sorts, but would otherwise see what Gurtha was offering.

The rest of the refugees don't seem more forthcoming than Gurta, although they accept the blessings with various degrees of gratitude. Konstiantina gets the feeling that past encounters with outsiders may have tainted their views of strangers, and they are now a tightly-knit community that is distrustful of new faces.

Gurta's eyes widen at the mention of crates of food, and she nods several times. "Yes, of course, be our guests, here, have a look."

She pulls out a few items from her own pockets and gestures for another woman, who brings out more.

The items for sale are: potion of keen senses, scroll of chill metal, scroll of entropic shield, scroll of inflict moderate wounds, wand of mage armor (37 charges), pyxes of redirected focus - all at regular market prices.

Rose carefully studies the items and mostly consults Lotti and Lisa on their actual workings, trying to guess their value. "Does anyone need something on display?" she asks the others, as apart from the potion, there wasn't much she could use.

When no one speaks up, Rose nods and calls back the carriage. "Say Maurice, be a dear and collect the most perishable food crate, would you? The one with the fresh bread."

She waits for the rotund but strong guard to deliver said container, then she grins. "I'll be honest, Miss Thresh. I don't believe my friend or I need any of your items. However, I believe we can still come to an arrangement of sorts. We are living in trying and uncertain times, and any information on our surroundings is valuable. How about I leave this crate for you and yours to take, and in return, you take note of interesting things happening in the region for us? If what you can tell us is valuable, perhaps we could repeat such an arrangement down the line. Would you be open to such a deal?" She extends her gloved hand for the other woman to shake.

Gurta eyes the crate with a mix of hunger and wariness, turning to appraise Rose with half-narrowed eyes before nodding once curtly and extending a calloused hand to meet the handshake. "Sounds easy enough. First instalment - there's a big posh party happening at the Birdsong place, starts tomorrow morning and lasts coupla days. Anyone who's anyone in these parts will be there."

Where to next? It is afternoon, and the roads are not in great condition, so it might be better to go straight to the Birdsong Palace for the jubilee. You can try to swing by the Betony estate first, but it would be cutting it close.

After taking their leave from the little outcast community that has made Beggarwood their home, the party is again on the road, heading northwards towards the Palace of Birdsong and the celebration of the Tanager Jubilee. After a night spent in a roadside inn, the next day sees their early morning arrival at the palace, the road already crowded with the carriages of other guests. It hardly bears comparison with the gatherings that one is accustomed to in Oppara, but it is still a respectable assembly of nearly 40 nobles and public servants, all fussed over by a small army of servants sporting bird masks.

The palace itself is vast, rambling and magnificent, a two-story sprawling structure nestled amidst lush gardens where swans and peacocks roam freely. Fine laburnum trees blossoming with yellow flowers flank the drive leading up to the palace, which curves around a large rectangular fountain decorated with intricate sculptures. The place is thronged with guests, staff, guards, and a gaggle of entertainers - ferret-jugglers, fire-breathers, stilt-walkers, and other amusements ensuring that there is never a dull moment.

As their carriages approach, an extremely well-dressed man detaches himself from a group of frilly young women to welcome the new arrivals.

"And a very good morning to you! I am Count Bartelby Lotheed, steward of the county of Meratt, landgrave of the Hyden Marches, and tribune of Lotheedar. If I may venture a guess, we are to be neighbours, is that not so?" His warm smile is utterly charming as he gazes expectantly at the party.

This is an opportunity to make an impression on Count Lotheed before we go into social rounds. What is everyone wearing - no need for descriptions, just the quality/cost of everyone's current outfit. You can make either a Bluff or a Diplomacy check to try and convince him that you are nobles of good breeding and wealth. Thanks to Martella's notes, you already know a little about him (see spreadsheet).

The relevant NPCs have been added in their own tab (Meratt NPCs) in the player reference sheet.

We will be using the full social combat rules as described in the War for the Crown Player Guide - so NPCs will now have biases and strengths in addition to weaknesses. For the jubilee there is no influencing a room check, only interactions with specific NPCs. Beyond that, the rules remain the same - each round either a discovery attempt can be made (to uncover a bias, strength, weakness about an NPC, or to figure out one of their influence skills), or an influence attempt. The jubilee is not the only opportunity for influencing the NPCs, and they will be reachable in the future for further attempts.

- Discover Bias: DC 20 Sense Motive
- Discover Influence Skill: Sense Motive or knowledge Nobility (DC varies per NPC)
- Discover Weakness/Strength: skill check and DC varies per NPC.

Lotti nods to the footman as he helps her down the folding steps from the carriage, then turns her attention to the count. "His Excellency has scarce given us a chance to shake off the dust of the road before impressing himself upon us," she remarks haughtily, brushing imaginary dirt off her spotless velvet gown before removing one silken glove. She holds the bare hand out, clearly expecting the count to take it and perhaps politely kiss it - though she makes no effort to accommodate his height. "Regardless, it is a pleasure to be here at last, and to have met Your Excellency. I am certain you will be an excellent neighbor." Wobblekins oozes around her feet, almost seeming to puff up his chest to better show off the collar and bowtie adorning his neck.

Lotti's using her gown from the gala - maybe risky if someone recognizes her because of it, but also possibly beneficial if that makes someone think she belongs here. Also, it's the only really fancy dress she has. XD

After waiting for someone to help her descent from the carriage (purely for the sake noble decorum), Rose joins Lotti and extends a gloved hand for Count Lotheed to take.

The Rose standing before him was distinctly different from how she'd been prior to leaving Oppara. She had an unmistakable regal bearing that had been either downplayed hard or missing entirely prior to the last few days. Along with her new 'casual' outfit, an absolutely flawless green and blue Rose-patterned dress that hugged her slender frame in the exact right ways, she all but commanded attention towards herself. A beautiful golden tiara along with an assortment of similarly matched other jewelry left exactly no doubt to her standing as a Major Noble, if the dress and unflinching eye contact weren't enough of a giveaway. Even the most critical style enthousiast would find it hard to come up with a fault, and that it matched the Taldan national colours with her hair was icing on the cake.

"Indeed. Charmed to meet you as well, Count Lotheed. I find the tranquil landscape of the area a welcome reprieve from the City, following recent developments," She says, giving a soft smile. "But where are my manners. I am Lady Raesilia Talbot-Zespire, daughter of Duke Talbot, of the Talbot mercantile imperium. Niece to Count Orlando Zespire from my mother's side. I am afraid I myself lack a more fancy title at this point. While we could afford many, it has always been our method to instead invest back into our enterprises. Still, I thank you in advance for your no doubt generous hospitality."

Diplomacy, assuming the Duke is straight (+1) and a +1 bonus from exotic perfume: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (7) + 21 = 28

Somewhat playing out the effect of her circlet of Persuasion, which adds +3 to all charisma ability and skill checks. She's also wearing a 150 g self-crafted Noble outfit with 200 g of jewelry and a dose of exotic perfume (the 10 g/+1 version). Her effective charisma score with the circlet is technically 20, or 22 to those attracted to female humans with the charming trait? Anyway, she's stunning regardless :)

Lisa descends from the carriage with the helping hand of a bird-masked servant though her eyes remain fixed on her target, a predator sizing up her prey. It was appropriate that she was garbed in the elegant yet doubtlessly sinful serpent-themed ballroom dress that Rose had so kindly crafted for her. I believe we said the value was around 150 gold if not more? She waits for the others to say their piece before taking her own approach to the count.

Stepping close to the man Lisa takes a quick drag of her pipe and exhales releasing a cloud of bitter-sweet scents which swirls about the pair clinging to their clothes before being carried off by the winds. The woman smirks, her crimson lips curling with mischievous delight as she greets the man. "My, oh my, I dare say, I had heard the rumors but didn't expect the dear count to be quite so handsome." She giggles naughtily and plays with her hair maintaining direct eye-contact with the man before her, the man who got her Kimi killed. It was hard to hide the hatred, the murderous intent. So she didn't, instead channeling that emotion into her performance giving her an air of seductive danger and whispered promises of savage acts performed behind closed doors.

"Lisa Lombardi, though I'm certain I need no introduction to a man as connected as you. You know who I am. And I..." Lisa savors the words in her mouth before she spits them out, there was something delicious in the poisonous words she served this man. "... hope to get to know you."

She playfully traces a finger over the man's chest before she begins to move past where she pauses to whisper in his ear. "If you can pull yourself away from your little gaggle of girls, I do hope you can find the time to have a word in private with a real woman, and fill me in... on all the latest gossip in this quaint little town we call home." She winks and struts off into the crowd swaying her hips as she goes.

Count Lotheed is far too well-bred to display surprise or discomfiture as Rose turns the charm up to eleven and Lisa does nothing to hide her seductive and sensual inclinations, but there is the slightest pause before he regroups and responds with a dazzling smile, his manner suddenly warmer and more animated.

"My dear ladies, what an honour! I am delighted to be your host, and I look forward to deepening our acquaintance. You will, of course, stay in the palace itself, as befits your rank and stature."

Sense Motive DC 20:
This sounds like a decision he has taken right then and there, and you notice many of the less well-dressed guests being led around the palace towards a row of cottages half-hidden among the trees. It looks like your performance was convincing enough to bump you up in the Count's regard.

Bartelby gestures for servants to unload the luggage and take care of the carriages and horses, then turns towards the party again and bows. "Alas, I am extremely busy right now, as you might imagine, so I shall leave you to wander around a little - but do not stray far! We have many exciting events planned for your stay here."

With that, he takes his leave, allowing you a bit of free time to explore and meet some of the other guests. White-gloved servants are eager to present trays of drinks with fine local white wines, and plates of food - cheeses, jellied calves' feet, stuffed olives and other delicacies.

Let me know if there is anything you'd like to do before we start the first social event.

"Well, he's at least a gracious host or pretending to be one," Rose comments, seeing him go. She winds up the mechanical cricket she'd honestly forgotten to return to Martella and sets it to fly. The buzzing it made cancelled out attempts to overhear their conversation, according to her, and she'd trust her on that. "Is everyone ready to mingle? Let's make a good impression on our new neighbors, first and foremost. But should we just coincidentally happen to find any incriminating things or crippling weaknesses regarding our dear host..." she grins at the others. "It wouldn't break my heart."

A short time after Count Lotheed's welcome of his new neighbours, a gong sounds from inside the palace, and the crowd begins to move towards the entrance.

Past the marble steps lies a grand entrance hall that spans the width of the palace, its white walls decorated with portraits of the Lotheed ancestors. Four marble columns carved in the likenesses of Abadar, Aroden, Cayden Cailean, and Shelyn hold up the ceiling, which is painted with a fresco map of Taldor. A soft, plus carpet covers the polished floor, muffling the echoing sounds somewhat. Glass doors open at the rear of the hall towards the gardens.

The rest of the attendees move through the entrance hall and through a pair of intricately carved doors to the right, into an enormous library. Even at a cursory glance, the tall mahogany shelves seem well-stocked with books, scrolls and journals, while glass cases on delicate side tables display a number of undoubtedly priceless antiques. Several spaces have been set up for entertainers, but no one is performing at the moment.

The library opens into the grand ballroom, a massive, open space tiled with marble and painted in rich, warm colours. Ten-foot-tall windowed doorways stand at the north end, offering a splendid view of the gardens, and plush benches line the long walls. The gong whose sound was heard earlier is set in the middle on a small podium, and next to it stands Count Bartelby Lotheed. At the base of the podium gathers a throng of jesters wearing colourful costumes and bird masks.

As the nobles and dignitaries arrive and settle into the space, Count Lotheed taps the gong lightly to get their attention, then gestures widely at the assembly. "Welcome, dear guests, to this year's Tanager Jubilee! Most of you know the story already, but I believe we have newcomers amidst our ranks today, so please try not to be bored to death as I recount it for their benefit." With a slight incline of his head towards Rose, Marius, Lotti, Konstiantina and Lisa, the count continues. "When Count Markolian Stavian broke ground for the construction of this palace, some eight centuries ago, legend says that a scarlet tanager landed on his shovel and sang his praises. Perhaps that is what happened, or perhaps it is just a pretext for giving the lower classes a day off from their toil." A very slight smirk indicates just exactly what the count thinks of such a notion. "Even better, for us it is an occasion to celebrate wtih feasting, games, dancing, tournaments, and a most exciting hunt!" Polite applause patters through the ballroom, although a tall, well-built young man towards the back hollers loudly and enthusiastically.

"But first, as every year, you will all be assigned a personal assistant!" After a slight hesitation, the costumed jesters bow with various degrees of awkwardness. "They shall act as your guides and announcers, lead you to events, and attend to your personal needs - as well as entertain you!" Count Lotheed claps once, and the flock of jesters disperses, seeking their assigned guests and patrons.

A short, slight woman whose costume consists of patches in blue, yellow, grey and red, wearing a mask with a short, pointed beak, approaches the group, bowing deeply. "Miladies, milord, I am Purple Finch, and it shall be my honour to be your personal assistant and jester for the next two days. If you have any wishes, please let me know and I will try to satisfy them at once."

Konstiantina has been a sober presence during these proceedings; following with quiet dignity at the back of the group, remaining silent, she's instead set herself to observe the gala and take in as much as she can about the attendants. The outfit is well made and of fine material of course--Rose could hardly do less--but it hardly stands out next to the dazzling Ms. Lobardi and Talbot. Not that Marius minds, as he immediately plastered a pleasant smile on his face and set to work subtly studying the Count...though his smile faltered a bit when he saw the jesters, as memories of Wissilkia soured his mood. Purple Finch makes a show of being startled of Wobblekins, flapping her arms and emitting alarmed trills as she pantomimes a bird being chased by a cat. After a few moments she settles down, panting and letting His Grace bump against her legs.

"If you would like to follow me to your rooms, I shall explain the events on the way." She gestures, and unless anyone objects begins to lead the way back through the library and across the entrance hall, talking as she walks.

"Today there is of course the tournament, where guests can compete against each other to win fame and glory. Participation is completely optional, of course, but if you have a more martial inclination you would not want to miss it." She eyes Marius and Konstiantina, putting a finger to her lips. "Baron Okerra has been taking home the victor's crown for the last few years, but he is getting on in years, so who can say what might happen? If jousting is not your things, Dame Crabbe usually organizes a game or two. She is a tremendous gossip, and probably the fastest way for you to get acquainted with local affairs."

Ushering everyone through double doors leading into the western wing of the palace, the entertainer continues. "In the evening there will be a feast, followed by dancing and card playing." She gestures to the left, where a corridor branches to the south, leading to three doors. "And here are your rooms, ladies and milord. You will have a nice view of the front courtyard, I believe. Round 1

Rose decides to make the most of her time and begins by simply observing Count Bertelby. From a glance, it is hard to pin down his inner workings. The mix of arrogance, charisma, and only barebones courtesy to satisfy etiquette gave her an impression that he didn't want to be here, or such, even though it was his own event.

Interesting, and odd.

At some point during the tournament she approaches him and strikes up a conversation regarding his lands. "I would like to know more of your family and their lands, dear Count," she says with a modest if charming smile. "My family is quite wealthy and always seeking to expand and diversify our businesses. What would you say makes your holdings an attractive venture over others, especially in these uncertain times? What benefits are there to strengthen our ties to the Lotheeds? Is there more to you than your surface reputation of being skilled mages?"

"Baron Okerra! Charmed to meet you here as well - and relieved, given how that was much less of a surety than it should ever be," Rose nods at the elder man with a bright smile as she cought him gearing up for the jousting matches. Unsure how to best spend her time remaining to the start of the tournament, Rose spots the daughter of Count Crabby looking decidedly lost and also as if she didn't want to be here.

"It's rather a lot to take in, these games, aren't they? I can remember my first big one. I was ten - my debut into high society. I had to look pretty, play nice with everyone and dance with whomever asked. If someone asked me something, I had to answer with carefully studied responses. Oh, how I hated every second of it. But, in time, I learned how they can be fun," She smiles warmly at the other girl and offers one of the drinks to her. "Raesilia Talbot, daughter of Duke Talbot. Nice to meet you. Perhaps it was presumptuous of me, but it looked as though something was bothering you and that you'd perhaps appreciate having someone to talk to?"

He spies his chance not too long after, when the Honorary Tribune wanders into the next row over, looking uncomfortable. Mentally reviewing what he knows of the half-elven woman, Marius scans the titles and shrugs internally. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

"I apologize for intruding on your browsing. You are Tribune Onora Piscum, are you not? Sir Marius Erallan, at your service." The nobleman makes small talk for a time, making sure to listen more than he speaks and when he does he gives the Tribune every courtesy, never referring to her as "Honorary" or behaving as though she were beneath him due to class.

Naturally Marius will Study her for the +1. This post is a bit light on the RP because I don't want to make too many assumptions about the NPC in case it conflicts with something in the adventure.

Rose

Round 1/3

Count Lotheed pauses in greeting a pair of wealthy-looking merchants as Rose commandeers his attention. "My dear Lady Talbot, I am hurt that you would consider our arcane skills a mere surface reputation! I assure you, my family has many an archmage in its illustrious ranks. And we remain illustrious by concerning ourselves only with strength. None of that bleeding-heart nonsense about social reform that you hear these days from certain members of the aristocracy, hmm?" His gaze on Rose lingers just a little too long before he excuses himself politely and returns to greeting his guests.

Spoiler:
Bartelby Lotheed's Strengths]Bartelby has only contempt for the common peasant and feels they should know their place and remain quiet. Invoking any sense of compassion for the downtrodden or sense of collective identity with peasants raises his hackles.

Round 2/3

Baron Okerra, on the other hand, seems quite delighted to see her, bowing deeply and offering to kiss her hand. "Ahh, Lady Talbot! So good to see that you are in good health!" He looks around conspicuously. "Is perchance your friend with you? Lady Mokei? I believe I saw you together that night... at the Gala." His expression becomes a little shadowed at the memory of that tragedy.

"Well, wherever she is, I hope she is well. She was also interested in my tournament career when we met, that memorable bout with Sir Veverra at the Golden Jubilee, ahhhh! But, to answer your question! The secret, Lady Talbot... is observation. Watching, and listening, and just... feeling. I can tell a lot about my opponent at a glance, and I use that knowledge to my advantage." He stands just a little taller, stretching out his impressively tall frame. "And well, size and strength help, heh he heh."

One success!

Round 3/3

Sepsinia Crabbe is staring off into the distance as Rose approaches her, the white gown only accentuating her unhealthy pallor. There are dark circles under her red-rimmed eyes and a hollowness to her cheeks. She starts as Rose addresses her, looking vaguely around as if not comprehending that the Talbot scion is talking to her. She mumbles something, trailing off and resuming her thousand-yard stare.

From amongst a cluster of fashionably-dressed women, her mother emerges like a battleship clad in pink satin and frills, walking as fast as decorum would allow towards the pair, a wine glass balanced perfectly still despite her somewhat hurried gait. "Ahhh, Lady Talbot, is it? I have heard of your arrival, and that of your friends! Such a distinguished entourage, and one might say - unusual? I see you have met my daughter, Sespinia." Her smile is just a little too friendly, and her behaviour puts Rose in mind of a mama bird flapping her wings to distract a predator from her wounded chick. "Say, my dear Lady Talbot, that young man who arrived with you, who is that? Are you all here just for the jubilee, or are you staying longer? Oh, you absolutely must grace us with your presence at my estate if you are staying! At least come for tea, I insist!"

The third round for Rose is unresolved at the moment, as Sepsinia doesn't seem receptive to influencing (or anything much, really), but you do have a chance to learn something about her mother, or to try and influence her.

Marius

Round 1/3

The muscular half-elf turns with surprise as Marius engages her in conversation, frowning as she appraises him openly, her sharp eyes taking in his well-tailored outfit and lingering on his hands.

Onora Piscum's Biases:
Tribune Piscum despises anyone who flaunts their wealth and power (–2), but she warms up to anyone who clearly understands a practical skill or two, such as Craft, Handle Animal, Profession, or Survival (+2).

"Well, Sir Erallan, I'm not sure what you'd want with me, I'm just a country girl. I wield no power or influence around here, and I certainly lack wealth and lands, so no need to waste pretty talk on me." Despite the unfriendly words, Marius senses a sliver of curiosity.

Rose watches the Count go and mentally sighs. "And I thought *my* brother was an arse. I'm sorry for you, Martella. I believe I owe you a drink."

Believing him to be a lost cause for her due to their radically different ideology and the Count painfully aware of such, she strides away. In passing, she whispers to Lisa. "He's a prick, but you know that. He cares little for anyone beneath noble station and less for sympathy directed there. All I have to say is, go get him!"

With a wink, she leaves Miss Lombardi to work her no doubt sensual magic.

Fortunately, Baron Okerra proved to be a much better conversationalist than the Count. She laughs at the man's boasting. genuinely amused. "Oh, Lady Mokei is quite fine, and here as well indeed. Were you perchance hoping she would cheer you on, or bestow a ribbon of her favor to your lance?" She raises a slightly cheeky eyebrow at the noble, then chuckles. "I jest, of course. "It would seem that you're a hard man to get close to!" Lisa giggles coyly 'hitting' the man on his chest with two fingers, playfully scolding the man. "And while I do rather enjoy a 'hard man'..." "I always feel at odds at occasions such as these. She purses her lips, giving the question thought, then glances sidelong at Adella. "Allow me to introduce myself. Lady Konstianina Mokei, paladin of Iomedae. I of course know of yourself, your grace. After the Tribune's no doubt curt response, the paladin takes a sip of her water and continues. "We are but newly arrived in this area, my friends and I. Rose

Dame Crabbe's weakness:
Anyone who seems romantically inclined toward Sepsinia - or better yet, attempts to woo her - will find Dame Parthena Crabbe very friendly.
Dame Crabbe hasn’t noticed her own lack of love life and is easily flustered by anyone flirting with her.

Dame Crabbe flutters a hand as Rose mentions her daughter again. "Oh, Sespinia's just been poorly lately, but nothing to worry about, I'm sure an event such as this will cheer her right up! Isn't that so, my darling?" Her darling continues to stare off into the distance, not appearing to have heard her mother. "See? She's already imagining the dances she'll have and all the lovely young men who will court her! And speaking of, this Lord Erallan, might have he inherited the Betony estate? I had heard some rumours that... oh, yes, please, have some wine, isn't it just delectable?" Dame Crabbe's somewhat strained smile might indicate that Rose just took her wineglass, still bearing an imprint of Parthena's rose-coloured lipstick. "I say, it's not like Count Lotheed to not maintain the highest standards, quite scandalous that you haven't been offered refreshments yet! I shall scold the man the next time I see him! And, as I was saying, you and Lord Erallan simply must pay us a visit after the jubilee! And is Lady Erallan here as well, perhaps?" Her side eye and coy smile make the question quite pointed.

Lisa

Count Bartelby Lotheed's biases:
Bartelby despises fools, and has no time for anyone without an Intelligence score of at least 12 or ranks in at least three different Knowledge skills (-2). He admires fellow practitioners of the arcane arts (+2).

Lisa spends some time observing her target, noting the way he interacts with his guests. He treats everyone with studied courtesy, but it is rather curious how a rather shabbily dressed and bespectacled professor gets the count's full attention for almost a quarter of an hour. Lisa could swear that Bartelby is genuinely engrossed in whatever nerdy conversation the two are having.

As she approaches him with her teasing and innuendo, the count looks her up and down, taking in Rose's handiwork and Lisa's own natural charms, allowing himself a quick smirk to mirror her own. "Ahh, Miss Lombardi, was it? How very discerning of you. I am rather busy at the moment greeting my guests, but perhaps we could... run into each other later. Perhaps even several times." He winks, then turns back to his duties as host.

Konstiantina

Detect Evil:
You get a faint sense of aura from count Lotheed, but that's hardly surprising.

Round 1/3

Baroness Voinum glances sideways at Konstiantina as the paladin strikes up a conversation, her lips thinning. "Pfft. And which illustrious achievements are we celebrating here, precisely? That a bird shat on Markolian Stavian and some fools thought it some kind of divine sign?" She inclines her head just barely to acknowledge the other woman's introduction. "Lady Mokei. I should likely wish you a good time here, but in my opinion it's all nonsense."

No success. :(

Round 2/3

Onora Piscum seems a little ill at ease as Konstiantina addresses her, but the paladin's simple attire and her inquiry into volunteering opportunities soon seem to melt her reluctance. "Oh, my lady, very kind of you to offer. I couldn't say about the other estates, but us in Stachys can sometimes use a healer. We don't have no alms house or medical center, most things happen at my public house, the Wolf's Whisker. You're welcome to come any time."

No success. :(

Round 3/3

Baron Okerra positively beams as he spots Konstiantina heading towards him. "Lady Mokei! What a pleasure to see you again, and in good health! I would love nothing more than to meet you in the lists, what a glorious encounter that would be!" He leans in a little, eyeing the rest of the gathering. "I would welcome an honest martial contest right now, all this talk of unrest and civil war is putting me on edge."

Baron Nicolaus Okerra's strengths:
Nicolaus is especially resistant to any discussions that suggest subterfuge or all-out revolution.

As it happens, the serving woman that Lotti flags down is a distant cousin of the tribune, and is all too happy to share a little family gossip. Onora Piscum wants to do right by her community, but feels that the nobility have all but abandoned the common folk in the county and as a result doesn't trust them much. She appreciates someone with practical knowledge, but she is not used to the word games that the aristocracy plays, and it takes a bit longer to persuade her that way.

Deciding to hang back a moment to watch and listen in on how this all will proceed, Lisa once again opens her mind to the whispering voices as she allows them to take in every small detail about the woman and whatever inclinations she might have.

Lisa

Dame Parthena Crabbe seems to be taking this nobility business very seriously, clearly someone who strives to be the embodiment of Taldan aristocracy - but seemingly without understanding the underlying reasons. Someone who dresses, converses and moves correctly, without any consideration for why. She seems definitely interested in both local and national gossip, but there seem to be hidden depths to the woman; as Lisa watches, Parthena Crabbe detours to the library and spends a few long moments admiring the antiques on display.

The tribune sweeps her gaze pointedly over the frivolous gathering of nobles and hangers-on. She is not so rude as to raise an eyebrow, but you can hear it in her voice. "They believe that? How optimistic." No success.

She turns away, about to walk off when Wobblekins's forehead bumps her calves rather vigorously. "Oh! Where'd you come from?" As Lotti speaks, the half-elf frowns in puzzlement, clearly not knowing how to handle the elderly gnome in her velvet dress. At last, she sighs. "Critters are a lot of responsibility, and so are people. You're right that I didn't ask for it, but someone's gotta do the job, and this lot," she points with her chin at several noblemen laughing uproariously at some joke that a more-than-half-drunk viscount just made, "well, they ain't doing it. So perhaps some things should change around here."

That's one success on the tribune!

I know not whether the change will be for the worse or the better, but I know this: Taldor is not a play, where the titled and rich get to be the players while all others merely watch. I suspect Taldor's history will also be influenced by people like you, should you wish to." Marius takes a step back and executes a bow to the Tribune. "I've taken up too much of your time already, Tribune. Thank you for indulging me, I hope we get to speak again soon."

Onora Piscum nods to Marius in response, looking thoughtful.

Another success on her.

=======================================

After a lunch filled with delectable delicacies and copious amounts of wine, the events of the afternoon are ready to start. The count's servants have erected a list, a tilt, and stands for a joust, complete with colourful flags and banners. Stablehands walk over a dozen heavy horse mounts caparisoned in bright colours, while armourers make last minute adjustments to the protective gear and the blunted jousting lances. The stands slowly fill with spectators, many of them villagers who are enthusiastically partaking of the free food set out on heavily-laden tables - bread, cheese, sausages, and the ubiquitous Taldan pies.

Does anyone wish to participate in the tournament? Participation (even if you don't win) grants a +2 circumstance bonus to influence checks for the rest of Day 1.

For those of a more genteel persuasion, a field is set aside a short distance from the jousting list for trucco. The game involves skill and control, using long-handled spoons to knock hardwood balls around a field, through various rings, and into opponents' balls. Small sandwiches, cakes and tea are set out on side tables for participants and spectators to enjoy. Dame Crabbe seems to be a most enthusiastic player, and by the looks of resignation from the other players - also a very skilled one.

If you are not participating in the tournament there are 4 social rounds in which to influence NPCs during the trucco game. Baron Okerra is participating in the joust, and Onora Piscum is watching the martial contest with avid interest - neither are available for influencing during these rounds.

After lunch, Marius ambles his way to the sporting field. He scans the jousting arena for a few minutes, mostly to get a quick assessment of the number of spectators and competitors attending, before completing his journey to the trucco field. Seeing a noble lady retire from the game, Marius requests permission to fill the vacancy--on the team opposing Dame Crabbe, whom he salutes with his spoon like a duelist entering the ring.

"Now you'll have to forgive me, it's been quite some time since I last played. I must beg a bit of patience while I shake the rust off..."

"En garde, Dame Crabbe!"

Trucco rules

Players take turns attempting Dexterity checks. Characters proficient with light hammers gain a +2 bonus on this check, and characters with Weapon Focus (light hammers) gain an additional +1 bonus. A character scores 1 point with a successful DC 15 Dexterity check, and 1 additional point for every 5 by which her Dexterity check result exceeds 15. The first player to reach 7 points wins the round.

Jousting rules

Each participant attempts an opposed Ride check and an attack roll. The character with the higher Ride check result gains a +2 circumstance bonus on their attack and damage rolls for that pass. A character struck must succeed at a Ride check (DC equal to the amount of damage dealt) or be unseated from their mount.
Connecting with a lance scores 1 point, while unseating an opponent instead scores 2 points. A wielder who shatters their lance (which happens automatically if a single blow deals 20 or more points of damage) adds 1 additional point for the spectacle and the skill required.

Painfully aware of how unprepared she is for a jousting match, yet eager for the new experience, Konstiantina approaches the lists and Baron Okerra.

"For better or worse, I'll try crossing lances with you," she says, her smile genuine. "Though I believe the last time I rode a horse was Apples, the pony my father gifted me when I was six. Still. Perhaps Iomedae will reward me for this foolish venture."

That exchange completed, she allows the attendants to direct her to a steed, armor, and lance, and prepares for what is surely to be a less than impressive display.

After a short regrouping with her team to divulge the information she has managed to gather about the people of significance at the party and hearing what everyone else had to say Lisa heads out once again to see what she can do to tip the scales in her favor.

She, of course, had no interest in the physical bluster and boisterousness of these martial competitions but they could be an excellent excuse to try and ascertain the weaknesses and strengths of the others while they put their focus on the game, allowing their true selves to slip through the cracks.

Whilst keeping an eye out for her primary target, Count Bartelby, Lisa first makes her way towards the jousting grounds and is pleasantly surprised to hear Konstiantina is considering joining the games and yet... she seemed to be unsure of her chances of success.

Well, Lisa may just have to offer her a little assistance. Not that the paladin needed to know, of course.

Marius

Trucco rolls:
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Dame Crabbe seems delighted to have Marius join the game, and allows him to go first. She seems a very skilled player, deftly guiding her wooden ball with practiced ease through the hoops scattered across the field. She is very courteous in the first round, focusing on advancing her own ball and not knocking away the other players' balls, even though the rules allow that. She claps politely at everyone's attempt, successful or not, and compliments Marius on his plays. Still, despite his best efforts, Dame Crabbe wins in the fifth turn with a near-perfect shot.

"Oh, I am starting to warm up myself, Lord Erallan. Well played!" She pauses to take a glass of wine off a passing tray as the servants reset the field for the next round. "I am very curious to hear more about yourself, seeing as we will be neighbours! I did not know that Lady Betony had family in... where do you hail from, my lord?"

Konstiantina

Baron Okerra laughs good-naturedly at Konstiantina's words. "Lady Mokei, I am delighted that you are joining us. And I do not believe this to be foolish - after all, who knows when we might be called to do actual battle in defense of our land and our people? think of it as... practice." He winks, then turns to don his own breastplate, a much-mended piece of steel with his family's coat of arms almost indiscernible under the myriad scratches and dents.

Lisa

Baron Okerra is not available for influencing during the tournament, this includes discovery checks (his weakness is not something you could discern just from observing, I'm afraid).

Deciding that it would be best to let the paladin fair for herself, for better or worse, Lisa heads over to the trucco field to observe the players with aggressively mild interest.

The players seem to be having a good time particularly Dame Crabbe and Marius who is availing himself splendidly on the field even she must admit. More importantly, Dame Crabbe was completely engrossed in the game... distracted.

Lisa's amber eyes flit over to the waifish silhouette that is the broad woman's daughter, a sickly calf separated from the herd. The young woman had noticed earlier that Dame Crabbe tended to be over-protective of her daughter, speaking for her and protecting her from any probing questions while she was speaking to Raesilia.

This may be the only time to get approach the woman and understand the truth behind her strange behavior.

But first, what did she know of this woman?

Round 1 Know. Nobility Sepsinia Crabbe: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Lisa's lack of knowledge of this mysterious woman only intrigues her further. She decides then and there to approach her with a friend waive.

"Yoohoo~ Sepsinia, Sepsinia Crabbe wasn't it?" Lisa offers a casual greeting in a sing-song voice as she advances towards the meek woman.

"Taking in the trucco I see. And I must say your mother seems quite the enthusiast. I daresay she's positively broken the spirit of the competition! Though I must confess my full attention may have been stolen by her remaining competitor." The red-headed woman begins with a sly wink before offering a delicate hand.

"Lisa, by the way, Lisa Lombardi courtesan to the stars. A pleasure." She coos.

Round 2 Sense Motive Sepsinia Crabbe Influence Checks: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (7) + 16 = 23

Lisa cheers as Marius scores again and returns her attention to Sepsinia with a frown of concern, "While my attention has drifted onto the handsome men of the court... I can't help but feel your mind has found itself adrift as well, as if something elsewhere calls your attention. All this to say, you seem troubled dear girl. Please tell me what's troubled that fair heart of yours."

She smirks subtly as her hands come to clasp Sepsinia's own. "I'm a great listener."

Round 3 Sense Motive Sepsinia's Weaknesses: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (14) + 16 = 30

------

After the trucco match Lisa beckons Marius over daintily. "Marius my dear you played most excellently out on the fields, even I'm impressed! Though, I confess I am wounded that you had not waited a tad longer before joining. Had I known I would have bestowed your... stick whatever... with my favor surely such fortune would have carried you through the game and onwards to victory." Lisa chides before glancing back at at Sepsinia with an audible gasp.

"Oh my goodness! How rude of me! I haven't yet introduced you two! Sepsinia darling, this is my associate Marius Erallan, I'm certain the two of you will get on famously." The courtesan giggles as she watches the two with eagle eyes.
