Player: Zachary Seldon
Character: Anri Darkspur
Organized Play: #2366390-2004
Faction: Vigilant Seal
Downtime: Earn Income (Academia Lore) vs Task 1 (DC 15): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22 > 2 silver x 8 days = 1.60 gold
...
School Network > Scrolls of See Invisibility (DC 18, 2-hrs, 6.00gp ink) and Fear (DC 15, 1-hr, 2.00gp ink)
Faction Boon > Vigilant Seal Champion (free)
Generic Boons > Resist Corruption (#VS-T1), Sand Slide (#1-Q1), Valais's Assurance (#1-12)
Advanced Boon > Devil's Keep (#1-11)
First Note: I recently became aware that Anri can Learn a Spell from a Network Scroll (see above) if the Scenario gives sufficient time (3 hours) as part of Exploration. She will be looking for an opportunity to do so at some point during this adventure.
Second Note: If we Level Bump, Anri will swap out Resist Corruption (#VS-T1) for Combat Mentor (#VS-T2), to help coach lower-level characters into better offensive capability. All language for Boons are accessed in her Profile at the very bottom spoiler.

As a note I'm pretty sure you can learn spells from druids and clerics too, just as long as the spells you want are also on the arcane list.
There happens to be a good chunk near the beginning with some time (~6 hours), also with the way the intro is written you should be able to prepare your spells after learning of your mission.
Also you and Zandarel may wish to exchange spells.
Even if there isn't time during the mission proper there's nothing from stopping from spending time afterwards learning spells. (Although I can think of one scenario that's an exception to that)

...Zanderel, I am greatly interested in learning how to use Downtime to expand Anri's spellbook at a better rate than Earn Income. I would, for example, typically be willing to roll against Task Levels higher than the usual "Level minus 2" if that is the basic mechanism for doing so. Secondly, I will likely bother you in-game as towards organizing an impromptu study session, scenario permitting...
Zanderel Elerin

Anri - Perhaps a better rate is a poor choice of words. First, have a look at Magical Shorthand
The pertinent bit is, "You can use downtime to learn and inscribe new spells. This works as if you were using Earn Income with the tradition’s associated skill, but instead of gaining money, you choose a spell available to you to learn and gain a discount on learning it, learning it for free if your earned income equals or exceeds its cost."
Learn a Spell is normally an Exploration activity, and doesn't have the Downtime trait. So the first the feat does is let you learn a spell using downtime. In an AP, I expect a GM would just let you do this, but PFS is all about technicalities :)
The next good thing though is that you can use (in my case) Arcana for the roll if I'm using Downtime to Learn a Spell. I have a +11, which is better than all my other skills that Earn Income. Better chance to crit the income earned. Add the fact that a crit also halves the scribing costs... Let's do the math.
I'm a level 3 wizard and I have a scroll for a 2nd level spell I want to learn. With my +11 in Arcana (I'm Expert) I roll a 17 for a 28 total. That's a crit for both the task DC for Earn Income (15 for a level 1 task) and Learn a Spell (18 for a 2nd level spell). This means that I earn the task level 2 money (3sp) AND halve the cost from 6gp to 3gp. The net cost is 2gp and 7sp.
Why this is (admittedly marginally) better is because it's my best roll and it's only one roll. My Lore skills are +9, so a slightly decreased chance of a crit on earn income. Plus, if I somehow end the scenario with a hero point, I can reroll that bad result.
Oh and you betcha we are swapping spells!

Here is the recent PFS discussion on how exactly magical shorthand works.
Short answer: nobody knows for sure but there are a couple reasonable interpretations. I'll get back to you on exactly how I think it works
Hero Points are not usable on downtime rolls. In the Ritual rules...
As with other downtime activities, fortune and misfortune effects can’t modify your checks for the ritual
Zanderel Elerin

Thanks for the clarification on hero points and downtime effects. I've seen people use it a lot so far, so that's a handy reference. Even if that's an odd place for that to be referenced.
I'll read the thread on Magical Shorthand, but I will say... yay, more rules ambiguity!

can I assume drawn weapons again?
Also is the right piece of terrain above the trap woodded or not?
And also resolving Downtime:
EA 8 days DC14: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
EA 4 days DC14: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
S: 4sp
F: 4cp
Total: 0.44 gp

Hmm the action economy in this first round is always very unsatisfying. Even with drawn weapons I need Hunt Prey for the twin takedown leaving me with to little speed to reach the target in one stride. Its almost as if it is better to just let the enemy come at you.
Am I missing something how a ranger is supposed to be played?
Anri Darkspur
|
It's rough, yes. You have Quickdraw to look forward to, which will help a little.
You could consider Multi-classing into Barbarian or Fighter to eventually take Sudden Charge? Or Monk for Ki Rush?
That said, one of the "hidden" advantages of taking Twin Takedown over Hunted Shot is that you are more able to hold a frontline position (so as to use your feat), drawing focus from your comrades unto yourself, which can be a boon for them.
Isfan ibn Dafuur
|
Yes, but in my fist fight as ranger I learned how that is also hard to do without an AOO Skill. Or better or halforc Sorceress learned the hard way. And it did not really go better in the secomd fight where the Boss just walked right past me into the middle of the group to enjoy his huge charge bonus versus one of our rogues.
So before Level 4 even protecting people might be a problem. Right now my main purpose in protecting you is to make the wolf go through more difficult terrain (and hope thats a problem for wolves) and present a juicy menacing lump of meat and hope they fall for it, but don't hit it.
OTOH with Hunted shot I would have gotten on average 1.2 hits on my target. I a fight that only lasts 3 rounds thats a huge advantage to make up.
BTW thanks for the explosion.
| Pirate GM |
I find Twin strike's action economy is a little deceptive. It's a single action attack but requires hunt prey first so quite frequently it works just like attacking twice but lets you apply your hunted prey for free. You also happen to have played 2 outdoorsy scenarios in a row which tend to have further starting distances than a scenario that say mostly takes place in an urban or dungeon environment. That said I've found movement speed to be super important on my melee characters, with 30ft feeling vastly faster/more flexible than 25 and with characters faster than that feeling awesome.
I don't know if double scimitars is key to your character concept but especially with the 16/16 str/dex you might want to consider a throwable weapon in one of your hands, like say a trident or starknife that gives you some interesting options. Especially since neither of the scimitar's traits function well when fighting with 2 weapons I'd consider replacing both. Also having an agile weapon to follow up with makes a big difference in the accuracy of follow-up attacks, especially with ranger flurry.
Assuming weapons drawn you could easily end up stride, hunt, throw in some situations and then if the monster closes you can draw, twin takedown and then either strike again or move away or whatever. Quick Draw makes this path even more appealing.
Zanderel Elerin
|
With the caveat that drawing weapons can trigger Attack of Opportunity, but since that's more rare it's not as dangerous a thing to do. But yes, I'd definitely get behind the idea of a thrown weapon. Quick draw will help, and if you get to that point a Returning rune will make that even better.
Isfan ibn Dafuur

@GM the way I read it the wolf which attacked me is 3 diagonal and 2 orthogonal squares away from Anri therefore barely within 30 ft. Shouldn't it have triggered the detonation?
Isfan ibn Dafuur
|
@ Anri, sorry forgot you are also a fighter otherwise I would have stepped around for better flanking.
@ GM: would taking cover from the wolf have been a valid option for my third action? i was not sure so I just attacked.
Anri Darkspur
|
All good. I like to adapt. Depending on whether you go before or after me, I might try completely different things.
Isfan ibn Dafuur
|
BTW Thanks everybody for the useful input, Gave me a lot of food for thought.
@GM The scimitars are there for background reasons (him being a Garoundi). I plan to switch them for a more useful weapon set, but not on level 1.
Isfan ibn Dafuur

Sorry for assuming the combat was over already. I just wanted to write a small flavour post and then got carried away because my subconcious kept telling me that the combat is over.
@ Anri the once on the op of the map are a fleeing wolf and the other dead halfling, so I assume those are gone for sure.
Isfan ibn Dafuur

I am a bit short on posting time in the evenning, so feel free to assume that Isfan will not hinder the plan of the others.
| Pirate GM |
Hey folks, while I suspect it was intended in a friendly manner...
In my opinion as gm challenging other PCs to fistacuffs is not an appropriate way to resolve a difference of opinion on how to proceed in Pathfinder Society.
The motto of the Pathfinder Society is “Explore, report, cooperate.” In keeping with the “cooperate” theme, do not engage in
character-versus-character conflict.
Not only does the action itself make me uncomfortable it serves to stifle future discussion as Anri has now threatened violence over those who disagree with them.
---
If we had been at a physical table and I was on top of things I would have stopped the action when the challenge was initially presented and brought up the PFS rules, discussed the potential issues and taken a quick break before continuing.
I'd like to play as though that's what we have done, as I don't believe such a challenge fits within the framework of the Pathfinder Society.
That said it sounds like the preferred plan of the majority is to press forward. Baring any serious objections I'll move that forward this evening. (Assuming things don't go horribly off track we are rapidly approaching the end of the scenario)
If you have further issues regarding this please feel free to PM or email me. vcRob@pfsprep.com

Is Isfan currently hidden? If yes he could roll a sneak check to move through the bushes at half speed correct?
Isfan ibn Dafuur
|
Is stride to step onto the path. hunt prey and ready an attack for when he steps next to me a valid move. Could i even ready a twin takedown?
Anri Darkspur

You can Ready a (◆) Single Action Activity by paying (◆◆) Two Actions up front. Aka "Two for One with a Trigger".

Rules question for next turn.
I have a base speed of 25 ft. so half speed is 12.5 ft.
Movement is difficult terrain so 10ft/Step Horizontzal and 15 for the first diagonal step.
When I get only one move acttion, I cannot move 2 spaces horizontal , correct?
When I get only one move acttion, I can move 1 spaces diagonal, correct?
When I manage to succeed at multiple move actions I first add the distances and then apply it to the map correct?
@ Anri Keep hanging in there. My expected time of arrival is around Christmas. Probably next christmas but maybe the year after.
| Pirate GM |
First diagonal step is 10 (5+5)
Second diagonal step is 15 (10+5)
Do note
You track your total diagonal movement across all your movement during your turn, but reset your count at the end of your turn.
In theory you make the rolls one at a time because it could matter when/where you crit fail.
12.5 feet is awkward as the 2.5 feet doesn't get you anywhere but I have no objection adding it to another stride action later that turn. (Just like if you wanted to double stride through normal difficult terrain you'd make it 5 spaces. I remember this being an explicit rule but I'm not currently finding it.)
Effectively getting you 10 feet from the first success and 15 feet from the second. (3rd success would be 10 again, and any crit success 25)
1 success gets you 1 horizontal or diagonal. (10)
A second susses then gets you a second horizontal or diagonal (25)
A 3rd success gets you another horizontal or diagonal. (35)
(Math gets more complicated with any crits)
Looks like you're 4 success away unless anything changes.
(The good news is Zanderel took the shard again meaning he's the only one effected by the bad luck curse.)
Sorry for the long answer, lemme know if this makes sense or if I've confused things further.
Isfan ibn Dafuur

Thanks it made things clearer.
I also had the thing about the diagonal steps the other way round (first the long one than the short), so good that this is cleared up.
