Dotting!!!

Male Human Cleric 2, AC 4, HP 10/10

Dot, dot, dot.

The fledgling magic-user stroked his bald head absent mindedly gazing at the tavern goers. His studies of late nearly overtaxed the old man's brain to the limit, and a few quick mug drains were the antidote it needed. His eyes drooped somewhat sluggishly as he cycled through the crowd, lingering on a well crafted weapon here...an exotic trinket there...though his senses were dulled his curiosity had no such switch.

The door of the tavern swings open and a figure stomps through.

The figure is covered in thick steel plates of clear dwarven forgecraft, covered in emblems of clan and people, with a fine shield and longsword strapped to its back.

The figure removes its bucket-like helmet, to reveal a head and beard of thick, ochre-coloured hair and umber grey-skin, the earth tones of a dwarf.

The slate-grey eyes peer around the room, seeking something.

Then, the figure sees its target, and advances.

It approaches the bar, and a deep, gruff voice emerges from between the beard and the moustache:

"Barkeep! Ale!"

Male Human Cleric 2, AC 4, HP 10/10

A skinny and scarred young man dressed in chainmail sits in the corner of the tavern, tepidly taking swigs of a cup of water and nibbling on the crust of bread someone else left behind. He carefully brings the bread to his lips, and intones a silent blessing with his eyes half-closed and his face upturned before taking the tiniest of bites.

He lowers his eyes and looks at the other patrons, taking particular interest in the dwarf who has just come in.

In the tavern beside the bar, a small table is occupied by two men. One of them is clearly the master of the local inn with an irritated look upon his face and the other being a young man of athletic build, dressed in chainmail and with an assortment of weapons beside him. For those close enough, the quiet arguement could be heard between the two.

"You've used the last of my goodwill, boy. I sympathized with your plight and Master Tennon was a good man but I am not a house of charity. You need to start paying!" The innkeeper's voice was low but terse, earning a wince from the impoverished warrior there.

"I understand, my good sir and...and your kindness has been a miracle to me! I just need one more day to find work, one more day and then the next I see you, I will be able to pay. Please...just...don't kick me out...don't make me sell the last gifts he gave me..." There is honest sadness in the young man's dark eyes as he looks up pleadingly before looking away ashamed as the innkeeper lets out a defeated sigh.

"Fine. One more night. Tomorrow, you give me gold or you sleep in the streets." He turns and leaves, mumbling to himself as the young warrior thanks him profusely again and again.

"What am I going to do? What in the hell am I going to do?" Sigfried thinks, letting his head sink into his hands. With all his coin gone, was his quest to find Master Tennen already a failure? No, he could not let himself think that way. There had to be someone who needed a lad as strong and skilled as him, there had to be someone who needed protection. He just needed to get there first before all the other desperate sellswords.

Darn it! They know I'm here. I've ordered four ales already. I think they just get a kick out of me having to stand on my barstool to get their attention.

"Hello? Is my Silver still good here? I'll have another please"!

The vertically challenged Pickles looks around the room at the drama's playing out among the other patrons.

Welcome to the Green Fairie Inn
The Green Fairie Inn

The last coaching inn on the forest line, this poor rundown compound is the only drinking establishment at Kolstoke Keep. As such, almost everyone from the keep, village and surrounding farmsteads can be found here at some time or another. The main room is filled with old tables and chairs that seem more scrap than furniture. A long, scarred bar with dented and corroded brass fittings runs the length of the room with smokey tallow candles providing just enough light to see by. A thin layer of dirty rushes covers the floor and hides god-knows-what lying there. The bartender is a thin, scruffy-looking man with a halo of fine blonde hair circling his otherwise bald pate. His clothes are clean, however, as is the green bartender's apron he wears. A single tired-looking serving wench hustles about the room, bringing the various patrons their drink orders. Occasionally a young boy can be seen with a tray of food coming and going from the courtyard which attaches to the kitchen. It is just approaching sunset and the place is full of all manner of people: Farmers, Trappers, Guardsmen...there is even a priest sitting in the corner, not to mention travellers from all parts of the kingdom.

Siegen stomps the remainder of the distance to the bar and then looks about.

If Siegen sees no signal from the bartender that he is getting ale, Siegen will repeat his brusque request for a beverage.

Once he is sure that his ale is on the way and his focus can shift to other matters, Siegen will look around, seeing what manner of travellers are in this inn with him.

Does anyone stand out as especially well-travelled?

Brother Jacob sees a chance to do a good deed for the day when he overhears the dwarven man complaining about his lack of coin. He stands up and brushes off his faded vestment that depicts a man being hung, drawn, and quartered upside-down while simultaneously being pressed and having ferrets nibble at his nether regions (clearly the depiction of Mordh the Unlucky, patron saint of the hopeless).

His long black hair is kept tightly bundled together in a black, red, and green turban (memorializing the colors of the saint's holy back boils) and he has a ling beard that falls nearly to his waist.

The clergyman stands and walks over to the dwarf, bowing so low that his face nearly touches the dirty rushes on the floor.

"Good evening, Master Dwarf. I am but a poor penitent, but I do have enough for the two of us to have a modest meal at this fine establishment. Would you do me the honor of joining me at my table?"

The human's face is scarred in numerous places and he is missing part of his left ear, but he does not seem particularly threatening, especially since he left his cat-o-nine-tails back at the table.

Sigfried lifts his head to pay attention to the other customers within the tavern, letting his dark eyes wander from one face to another. As Master Tennen said, there was always an opportunity if you knew where to find it. Someone here had to be looking for work or had work to offer. It was always easier to find an assignment when you showed up as a group altogether.

Throwing his dark hair back, he would lift from his seat and move through the crowded room. Most of the tavern were the regulars that came to drink their sorrows away. The dwarf and the penitent were new faces, at least new to Sigfried, but the small figure upon his stool caught the warrior's attention first.

"A halfling? Here? Why?" The towering fighter would make his way towards the man's table, waiting patiently first while the halfling placed his order. Once it was completed, Sigfried's warm smile would spread across his face.

"Is this seat taken friend?" Settling onto the bar beside the halfling, the two made a strange sight with the differences in their height. Up close, one could see the corded muscles, the athletic strength and speed even under the well-worn armor that he wore with little hindrance. "I have not met many of your kind before. I am Sigfried, what brings you to the fort?"

"Ah certainly. The stool is not occupied, though I was hoping for a pretty lass". The sturdy halfling then looks up at the mans towering height. "Though I guess you'll do. Tall as you are they won't miss you when you need more nourishment".

Though the halfling might be short of stature, he's broad in the shoulders and hips, and as he extends his hand for introduction, you can clearly make out the callouses of a swordsman. In the heavy sack at his feet, the hint of chain armor glints, and a sword with a well worn grip leans against the bar.

"Name's Pickles... and believe me I've seen enough stares to realize that I stand out if not up".

"I do not require any assistance right at this moment as we are in a tavern. I think I can handle myself here, but if anything more pressing comes up I will be happy to call on you. As for compensation, my gift of a warm meal requires none as it is given out of sacred duty. My order believes in sacrifice to others without expectation of repayment, so you are not in my debt in any way."

He then calls over the serving woman and orders a bowla of whatever the cook is making for Siegen and a bowl of hot water for himself.

The halfling's joke brought a laugh from the large man, who sat upon the stool offered.

"Don't we both, my friend, don't we both." Sigfried would take his hand in his own and take a measured look at the little folk before him. He was small in stature, certainly, but he had the proportions of a warrior. He was dressed for combat and the weapons and armor looked well-maintained and well-worn. Pickles would feel similar callouses upon Sigfried's hand, a longsword hanging in a scabbard and a sizeable dagger within a sheath on the other side. A sling with a pouch of smooth rocks beside it hung from his hip as well.

"I am certain that you have. Correct me if I am wrong, good man, but you have the look of a warrior. Are you looking for work or are you looking to hire others to go into that damnable forest?" The serving wench would bring whatever Pickles had ordered before the large man sat there, giving a tired smile to them both before heading off. Sigfried's eyes linger on her for a few moments before letting out a sigh. Everyone wants to marry a mighty warrior, not a poor warrior. His attention quickly returned to the halfling. "If you are, I have been looking for someone to hire me. It seems expeditions into the woods have been...slow..."

Brother Jacob nods and seems happy to explain his order to the dwarf.

"We are a small group of devotees who live a monastic life of prayer and self-sacrifice. Our saint was martyred when he took on the punishment of a dozen people convicted of heresy against the religion of their tyrant king long ago. He took 400 lashes, was pressed, and finally hung, drawn, and quartered. After he died, his body was crucified and drowned for good measure. "I guess you could call me a warrior, though I look upon it as a pastime I happen to have a penchant for that is used to support my real passion".

Male Human Cleric 2, AC 4, HP 10/10

Brother Jacob smiles but corrects Siegen. "The challenge was to an unjust ruling, an outlawing of all religions but that of the monarch's. The monarch himself and gotten his title by conquest and had introduced foreign gods to the realms he had taken by force. When people objected to bowing down to foreign deities, they were executed in most grisly ways, thus they became martyrs."

He then thinks momentarily before answering the dwarf's second question.

"As for how I follow in his footsteps, I must say that I do so most inadequately. I try to serve others and the greater good."

As the various visitors to the Inn are beginning to settle in for an evening of drink and games, the door burst open and a middle-aged woman rushes in.

"Come!! You must all come and help! My little Kenny is gone missin' an we need to find em before it gets too dark! Com'on...get yer lazy asses out o' those seats and give us a hand!"

The locals jump up right away and head out the door, while those visitors to the town look around in confusion. The barman yells out to those remaining in the room.

Most of the remaining patrons turn back to their drinks, food and games, seeming to ignore the man's offer...but will you?

Sigfried laughed, though the chuckle was half-hearted and muted. While he did enjoy fine ales and beautiful girls, the search for coin was not what brought him out here nearby these dark and terrible woods. It was something else entirely.

"Coin is needed for such merry pursuits, I agree. The truth is...my mentor disappeared into these woods a few years ago. Never to be heard from again. I am hoping that...well...my optimism is that I find him and what has happened to him. The reality is more...more that I wish for closure for that chapter of my life." The words were somber and already, Sigfried regretted speaking them. Pushing through the morose, he forced a smile back upon his face. "That is neither here nor there..." Sigfried continued, taking a large gulp from his mug. "...maybe tomorrow will have-"

He was interrupted by the door opening up and the distraught woman coming in from the outside. Standing up, Sigfried pounded back the last of his ale and pocketed the bit of cheese and bread that he had left upon him.

"I'll join the search. Keep my room ready for my return." He was almost about to head off out with a look of determination when he hears Pickle's request.

"Of course. Let me help you." With practiced hands and an intricate knowledge of how armor should be settled, he quickly helps the halfling into his armor and steps outside with the others. Carefully, he looked over the company that had also volunteered to join him in this task.

"An elf, a dwarf, a halfling, and some strange priest? I feel like I am part of a joke or something." The thought only lingers for a few moments before he looks for where Kenny's mother and the rest of the townspeople have gone to. "C'mon, this way." The young warrior says, a hand on his blade's hilt as he jogs after them.

The description you are given is of a young boy about 8 years old with brick-red hair and a spattering of freckles across his cheeks and nose. He has a slight gap between his two front teeth and is wearing brown woollen trousers, a red linen tunic with a leather belt and, like most lads of his age, went barefooted. He may or may not have a wool cap on his head.

Your group heads off to the south of the town, passing another group that turns at the edge of the forest to search the fields nearby. Being late in the afternoon, as soon as you enter the woods, the bright spring light quickly becomes defused into a green gloom.

The fresh spring breeze quickly drops and the air becomes very cool and still. Small animals and birds can be heard scampering about the bushes and trees. Several paths can be seen before you leading deeper into the forest.

"Choices choices. Tales of losing the way in this forest abound...I think the best approach is pick a path not at random, but predetermined. Always left for example..." waving his hand that direction. "Would that I hadn't left my graphite and parchment back in the tavern, scribbling a map might also prove prudent..." the strange man suggests.

Male Human Cleric 2, AC 4, HP 10/10

Brother Jacob remembers back to when he was a boy living in the Priory of the Martyred One. There had been a large field behind the main building and a small wood a stone's throw away. He had often played in the field after finishing his chores, but stayed away from the wood. He had heard strange stories of the vicious creatures that lurked in the wood.

As he got older, the other foundlings would dare each other to enter the wood to test each others' bravery, but he never took their bait. The forest terrified him back then.

As an adult he had returned to the priory and seen how little and harmless that wood actually was, less than a quarter-mile across and filled with nothing more dangerous than the occasional fox or badger.

Thinking back to his childhood, Jacob remarks to the others: "Pick a path, doesn't matter which one. Little boys like to run on paths."

The priest looks on the ground to see if there are any small footprints in the sod.

Sigfried only hesitated for a moment when the townsman asked them to go into the woods to look for the child. The sprinkling of fear was swallowed quickly before he nodded in agreement with the rest of his brave compatriots. He was no student anymore; he could handle what darkness laid in wait within the forest. He mentally keeps track of the description of the young boy before setting out with the rest of the group, passing from the safety and comfort of the woods and into the edge of the forest. The canopy above quickly swallows the light until a forest gloom covers all. The air stifles, chilling his skin and setting his hair on end. With a reassuring grip on his blade, he looks down the various trails. As the others listen and watch the foliage of the forest, Sigfried moves to the different paths and looks down upon them.

"A barefoot child running through here may have left footprints. Pray that the soil was soft enough for it to take." Crouching down, he examines the different trails and see if there is any that have the young boy's footprints in them.

Wisdom (12): 1d20 ⇒ 20

The trails were covered with the detritus of the forest; leaves, twigs, and grass that hid all signs of movement. Anything could've been a sign and Sigfried was no hunter himself.

"Any of you see anything? I can't see the boy's tracks but that doesn't mean he didn't come through here..." Sigfried murmurs, his voice low and quiet to not disturb the forest.

Listening, you only hear birdsong and the slight breeze in the leaves. Brother Jackob, however, notices a fresh couple of small footprints leading off on one of the paths going deeper into the forest.

Following this clue, the group delves deeper into the woods and soon are enveloped in the emerald twilight with every small sound they make seeming to be amplified a thousandfold.

After what seems to be hours, but in reality, might be closer to a single hour, the path leads to a clearing. This break in the wood is of man-made purpose, and the remains of some sort of building can be seen in the encroaching greenery. A strange round tower-like building is situated in the centre of the clearing...broken with small heaps of masonry scattered here and there. The faint outline of several outbuildings and perhaps a palisade can still be discerned in the overgrowth.

Have we been following the footprints, or did we only see them at the beginning of the trail?

Jacob looks at the tower sadly. "An old keep, by the look of it. I wonder if the boy could have hid in here?"

He looks about with a worried expression, having heard more than one story about witches and warlocks who hide in these sorts of forgotten places.

"Anyone know what this might be?"

The prints were at the trailhead, but since you have been on this path, there have been no others joining it.
