The party moves around the corner. After a few moments the sound of a squeeking door breaks the silence. Everyone can hear a quartet of xulgath voices urging each other to get out as quickly as possible...

Even if they hear something, it's clear they're looking to simply flee. Let them go or ambush?

The xulgaths hurry out, never looking back.

Once they're gone, the party checks out their abandoned room. This abandoned chapel is shrouded in gloom. To the east, a broken slab surrounded by marble debris is all that remains of a large statue. Atop the broken slab stands a crude altar of wood and stone bearing a human corpse. A gash splits the dead man’s throat, his decaying face frozen in a final mask of terror. A strange symbol carved into the man’s abdomen undulates with foul energy.

Arcana or Religion:

It's the symbol of Zevgavizeb, the demon lord of the xulgaths.

Dendillion detects a magical aura about the corpse. It's coming from a folded lace handkerchief in a pocket. his diaphanous item is marked with the “CM” logo of the Celestial Menagerie...

Chark spits at the site of the dead man's engraving. Zevgavizeb, she says with obvious disdain. Demon lord of the xulgaths. She notes the handkerchief Dendillion finds and shakes her head. No soul deserves to depart this way, even a willing member of the Celestial Menagerie.

Charlie takes a moment to proverbially sharpen his axe before felling the tree.

The grimple resembles a humanoid, mange-ridden opossum with boar-like tusks. It looks around with surprise and then fear as the large xulgath comes charging forward. In reaction, it spews vomit towards them!

Not satisfied, it pulls out a rock from a satchel and hurls it at the xulgath.
