Phin the Raccoon |

Phin nodded in approval as Baran immediately took charge of their group at her not so subtle suggestion. "That's what I thought." She got to her feet and collected her gear to bring it further inside whatever this structure was.
While Baran went back to collect their supper and to report, the rogue took a look around without moving out of sight of the others.

Seems like an odd thing for us not to have posted a watch...
Phin was roused from her sleep and was immediately on alert. "Since everyone is awake, we might as well investigate where that noise is coming from."

Alua Riversong |

I had assumed that Lupi was on watch, and that's why she heard it.
With a soldier's reflexes, Alua went from sleep to alert in seconds. Ears straining in the dim light, she tried to identify what it was they were hearing.
Nearby, a few curious goblin spirits looked on. Alua wondered what happened to the spirit of the Cyrian soldier. Had he moved on to a better place? Recruiting the help of a friendly looking goblin woman, Alua moved among her friends, calling upon the spirit for guidance as they moved to explore the possible danger.
When she was done, she nodded to Phin. "Tread carefully," she said, her voice soft. "Standard marching order."

the Grand Goblin |

"Since everyone is awake, we might as well investigate where that noise is coming from."
These were exactly the words Lupi wanted to hear, "Sure, just a moment, I'll just cast my Mage Armor..." and going through her mind, she noticed Mage Armor was not there... She had cast it yesterday and had not had a proper rest to prepare it again. "Umm... never mind, let's go!" Lupi was feeling half-naked without her trusted armor, but she was way too eager to see more of the Dhakaani ruins to be too worried.

Kirsdrake |

Seems like an odd thing for us not to have posted a watch...
Indeed... I considered waiting for you to organize it or asking pointed questions, but since this time it did not matter and one of you was going to wake up no matter what... if you want to set up a "default" watch rotation for nights that you follow if you don't give any specific orders (like we did with the matching order), I'm 100% fine with that. As long as you take the initiative and tell me how you want to do it.
You may consider this a friendly warning that not all nights (especially those spent in ancient ruins in the middle of potentially hostile lands) are as peaceful ;^)
Oh, just to be clear - Karola did not join you here but returned to the main campsite for the night.
You made ready to investigate the unnatural sound - a sound that had not repeated itself, but Lupi remained adamant she had heard it and not imagined it. It took a few moments for you to prepare your weapons and Erix to don his armor, but soon enough, under Baran's magical light, you crept further under the hills. The hallway - more of a tunnel, really, even though there was ample proof that this was no natural passage, even though it seemed like it had not been forced into the stone but the ancient engineers had rather followed the easiest path that led into the general direction they wanted to go. Veins of purple byeshk ore gleamed in the walls, reflecting Baran's light and giving the tunnel a somewhat surreal feel to it.
Lupi would certainly know the fun fact (and anyone else with a DC 20 History check, as this is a bit specific part of lore) - Dhakaani goblins were quite the master metallurgists in their time and all their secrets lost when their empire fell have still not been rediscovered. Working byeshk was one of the things that the goblins had done routinely but the blacksmiths of the current era found tasking - possible, yet slow and expensive.
To the northwest, you could see the tunnel ending in another collapse, but there was a smaller side passage leading west that was passable, although still partially blocked by fallen rubble. And right at the threshold of the new tunnel, an old, old, chipped knife lay on the ground, gleaming purple in the reflected light.
This would be a decent distance from where the sound Lupi heard might have come from - it was unlikely it could have come from much further, but there seems to be nothing here to have disturbed the blade..
Alua, Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
Alua, you catch a glimpse of... something in the narrow tunnel, but it fades before you can focus on it. It could have been a spirit (since no-one else reacted to it at all might be proof to support that theory), but it seemed rather formless. Not that you don't see those upon occasion, but generally the spirits that you see have enough presence left that they have retained much of their old appearance.

Erix Thorn |

Lupi woke from sleep from the odd sound. After a moment of disorientation, she started shaking Erix, "Erix. I hear scraping sound from the ruins, wake up." After Erix got up she went to wake the others.
Erix groaned as he got to his feet, but otherwise gave no protest. The others waited long enough for him to arm up, and with trepidation he readied himself to protest.
"Hey - someone leave a note, okay? If something happens, I want them to come in and rescue us, not think we were spirited away by ghosts or something."
Baran 'Elmswright |

I did say ...
We eat supper in shifts and take watches to keep the site secure.
... in my last post. I will be more detailed in the future.
-----When it was time to turn in, she asked Baran to warm up her sleeping bag. She was so tired that she was asleep long before it cooled down again.
When Baran returned he handed out food and bedrolls. When Alua held hers out he spoke to it, "Sleep the sleep of the just and as is said in stories 'let you conscience provide true warmth'" He did the same for the others in turn.
-----The boy awoke and rubbed his eyes. He listened keenly to the cavern then readied himself to head with the others. "Come attendants and bring your spectral lights. The scene awaits." The ghostly lanterns appeared and fell to the team's sides, alternating right and left. Baran went lock-step in Alua's suggested marching order. He tried to focus on what was ahead but kept looking at the cave walls.history: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11 [b]"The walls have the most brilliant purple sheen."
When they got to the purple knife he knelt down and dropped a little marker. He took out a little book and made notes on its' disposition and condition then, without touching, took a good look at it.
appraise: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12 Another Cyran dagger? Is the purple just a reflection of the walls or is it made of the same material?

Phin the Raccoon |

"Hey - someone leave a note, okay? If something happens, I want them to come in and rescue us, not think we were spirited away by ghosts or something."
Phin pulled some chalk out of her bag and scrawled on the wall, We didn't desert. If don't return to camp in two days, send help! She looked over at Erix, "Happy?"
The rogue carefully led the way down the tunnel until their progress was halted by more rubble. She pointed at the knife, "I'm no expert but that looks really old."
Lupi whispered, "The sound was like metal scraping stone, it could have been that knife, but I don't see anyone here"
Phin nodded, "I agree. But why now and why here? And do we think they were scraping against the blocked tunnel or trying to open this one more?"

Kirsdrake |

Another Cyran dagger? Is the purple just a reflection of the walls or is it made of the same material?
Not a Cyran dagger - this here is a true relic. Byeshk blade, very chipped and worn, the wood and leather of the handle for all intents and purposes disintegrated over the ages.

Baran 'Elmswright |

Baran took a good look at the knife. He pulled out his dusting brush, the one used for revealing artifacts, and dusted around it. It was strange how it was simply laying there. "It's like it was 'left' here for us, like bait. Where's the hook?"
I don't want to get too 'gazebo' but the placement is odd. Baran will look for Booby-traps.
perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Noticing nothing the boy carefully picked up the knife, wrapped and stowed it. Still crouching, he looked up. Face quizzical, he looked about at the team, "Who's good with concealed doors? Phin? Take a look near here and a little further down the passage. Erix, watch her back ... With Ghostly lanterns in attendance, the passage gave up strange fruit. A knife left as a hint to the false quiet. The eyes of ir'Brock moved forth for no detail be it concealed nor minuscule could avoid her notice."
Bardic performance - inspire competence. Phin receives a +2 to her perception roll

Alua Riversong |

Alua stared hard at the passage, wondering if what she'd seen was...anything at all. As Baran took charge and Phin started to move, Alua held up a hand. "Wait. I saw....something. A spirit? Maybe? Maybe something different. Be careful. I don't think we're alone."
Looking carefully at the dagger's placement, and the locations she'd seen the...phenomenon, Alua tried to figure out what was going on.
perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Kirsdrake |

Umm... That's a bit of a large question for any roll, no matter how good :-) The spirit-thing wasn't close to the dagger but it might have been a moment ago. But spirits (the kind that you generally see) don't interact with physical objects... Although your Curse is an exception to that. And the spirits rarely interact with you in a constructive fashion (except get in your way occasionally). So a bit of a mystery, or mere happenstance...
By the way, have you briefed Baran and Lupi into your "I see dead people" thing already?

Phin the Raccoon |

"Who's good with concealed doors? Phin? Take a look near here and a little further down the passage. Erix, watch her back ... With Ghostly lanterns in attendance, the passage gave up strange fruit. Phin nodded, "I guess old ruins could have hidden openings and passageways. I'll take a look and see if there's anything of note to find."
She motioned at Erix to follow, "Come, Cub. What is it you military-types say...Watch my six?"

the Grand Goblin |

Lupi has no idea about Alua's powers.
"Wait. I saw....something. A spirit? Maybe? Maybe something different. Be careful. I don't think we're alone."
Lupi said to Alua, "Can you see the spirits? How? Do you have See Invisibility spell?"
Later on Lupi took a good look at the knife to appraise it.
Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17 Lupi is not that interested about the monetary value, just to see if our dear professor would like to have it.

Erix Thorn |

She motioned at Erix to follow, "Come, Cub. What is it you military-types say...Watch my six?"
"Yes Ma'am." Erix agreed, and made sure to stay ten feet away from Phin, and generally looking in other directions. He carried his shield, but his other hand was free, ready to grab if needed.

Kirsdrake |

No hidden passages to be found here... as I mentioned earlier, the walls have been hit hard with the natural movements of the earth over thousands of years, one reason why the tunnels look so... organic... on the map. It's quite unlikely a secret door would have survived and remained secret. Looking for one might be best saved to a time if and when you encounter some intact walls. Anyway, more on to the narrow but open hallway leading west, I hear? I obey and serve. Momentarily.

Alua Riversong |

Lupi said to Alua, "Can you see the spirits? How? Do you have See Invisibility spell?"
"Invisibility?" Alua was startled. She'd never really thought about the fact that the spirits were invisible to most people. "It's more of a....well, the sisters at the church would call it a gift. Sometimes it seems more like a curse. But I see them all the time, it's not something I can choose to do or not do. What I just saw was different though. More insubstantial."
Keeping her eyes peeled, Alua brought up the rear, as was her custom.

Phin the Raccoon |

Not surprisingly, Phin didn't find anything in her search of the walls. Her and Erix rejoined the others and reported to Baran, "Nothing to be found. Since I'm not in the mood to do some heavy digging, shall we explore the smaller tunnel?"
"Alua, where did you see whatever it was you saw? If it is down that tunnel, is there anything we can do to protect ourselves from it if it's unfriendly?"

the Grand Goblin |

"Oh.. wow...", was all Lupi could say to Alua's explanation. After a moment of digesting the information, she also was ready to move on to the tunnel.
Kirsdrake: I wonder how much our group would know about Byeshk properties and which knowledge skill would be needed for knowledge?

Kirsdrake |

Lupi is not that interested about the monetary value, just to see if our dear professor would like to have it.
Perception is not the skill for that, but I guess that's just a copy/paste mistake since you used the right skill rating ;^) Hard to say, still... Appraise is for determining monetary value, not historical... for monetary purposes, what you have there is a half-pound chunk of Byeshk waiting to be smelted so it can be used for something useful. For that, the value is... considerable. You are not 100% but wouldn't be surprised if a talented smith wouldn't pay you 500G for the material. But you did all sign a contract that specifically forbid you from pocketing stuff that the archaeologists might be interested in ;^)
Kirsdrake: I wonder how much our group would know about Byeshk properties and which knowledge skill would be needed for knowledge?
Umm... Knowledge Arcane might be most relevant. Not really easy since the metal's intended use is not really daily relevant to anyone in this day and age - the Daelkyr haven't been seen for so long ago that I expect most people won't even believe in them or think of them as a threat of the past. Lupi would be uniquely well placed to know old legends about the stuff, but that's what they'd be - legends, since so very much of the true history of the Dhakaani has been lost to the ages, and even if some goblin tribes are eager to piece the puzzle together, they too realize they have very little hard facts to go with and a lot of what they have been able to recover might be just plain wrong, based on some mistaken interpretation down the road.
With Phin leading the way you crept forward, wary of an ambush, but the next chamber - again, greatly damaged by Eberron's fitful shifting in her eternal slumber - held no direct threats. What you did find were signs of old battle. A dozen skeletons that may have been of hobgoblin original, hacked to pieces, their remains spread all over the room, and two more bodies of Cryan soldiers, these ones bearing obvious battle wounds on their desiccated flesh, laid to rest with arms crossed over their chests in a corner of the room.
A corner of the room in the north-east had collapsed, but a route to the north-west seemed open - and from there, you could see a faint glimmer of light.

Erix Thorn |

Erix gave Alua a look at her revelation, but did his best not to stare.
"So..." Erix suggests "I'm no archeologist, but it looks like the Cyrans were fighting the Dhakaani? I guess they won, given the crossed arms. If that's the case, why are the bodies still here though?"
He moved to take point "Alua, these guys going to get up?"

the Grand Goblin |

Oops, my bad, I meant Appraise, not Perception. The knife is for the professor then :).
So throws for Arcane and History below, let's see what Lupi knows.
Knowledge(Arcane): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
Knowledge(History): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Lupi followed the group to the next chamber. She took the closest piece of hobgoblin skeleton to her hand wondering, why the remains of her kin had been spread around the room. She whispered to Alua,"Can you see the spirits of these hobgoblins still around the room?"

Kirsdrake |

Just to be clear... the Cyran bodies are decades old. The hobgoblin remains are thousands of years old - mere skeletons with a few tatters of what had once been armor or clothes clinging to them, and they have been properly demolished - barely two bones that are still attached to each other. One possibility is that the Cyrans encountered animated undead and dealt with them, but two of their numbers died and were laid to rest here.
And no, that wispy thing Alua glimpsed earlier is nowhere in sight. Feel free to invent as many other spirits as you feel like, though, Alua!
For those rolls (assuming they were for the metal), you may recall legends about the metal's true usage but you do not have any way of guessing if the legends are accurate or pure fiction.

In a previous post I did mention that Baran marked the find site, made notations on the knife's condition, wrapped and stowed it. He will certainly take it out again for anyone to examine but it is his intention to give it to the archeologists.
-----Not surprisingly, Phin didn't find anything in her search of the walls. Her and Erix rejoined the others and reported to Baran, "Nothing to be found. Since I'm not in the mood to do some heavy digging, shall we explore the smaller tunnel?"

"Alua, More insubstantial? Perhaps you're attuned to something more akin to a 'wandering Spirit' and this new thing is bound to a more specific purpose? To Phin's point, it could then certainly be hostile. I don't have anything that can touch an incorporeal presence. Be ready to retreat. Everyone remember the way out?" Baran was half-joking as the path was singular. "Yes, let's explore the paths open to us. They are less likely to bing us to anything unplundered but before we start a second dig we should map out any possible flanking positions - clear the corners. But with nothing revealing itself and yet a crooked cavern to delve, if danger will not apparate then they shall go to it." At his last words Baran's lights followed.

Baran 'Elmswright |

Wary of the open passage, Baran moved to the latest sign of collapse and examined it. "Lupi? Come take a look at this."
knowledge dungeoneering: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 I was going to ask is the collapse was natural or showed signs of tooling or tampering and assist Lupi's roll but with that result ...

the Grand Goblin |

Lupi shared her information with the others, "There are legends saying Dhakaani used Byeshk in weapons, because it was effective against some ancient evil. They are only legends, but I hope we don't see those ancient evils here" and added to herself "The knife is very dull, I hope it came from scraping against stone, not from fighting those ancient evil things."
Lupi went to Baran looking at the collapse.
Knowledge(dungeoneering): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21To see if the collapse was natural or intended, 2nd opinion from another doctor may differ from the first one :).

Alua Riversong |

He moved to take point "Alua, these guys going to get up?"
The oracle moved forward cautiously. Again, calling on the spirit of the curious goblin, she asked if there were undead in the area.
I want to hit Lupi's tag too, but too tired to do it justice tonight. Detecting undead in the area, hoping to catch the strange spirit as well.

Phin the Raccoon |

A corner of the room in the north-east had collapsed, but a route to the north-west seemed open - and from there, you could see a faint glimmer of light.
I was getting there...Phin has no interest in bodies (except to search after) or cave-ins (unless we're in unsafe conditions)
As Alua checked the dead bodies for life and Baran and Lupi inspected the structure at the cave-in, Phin was drawn towards the faint glimmer of light emanating from what appeared to be the only passable opening from the room.
The rogue crept forward as quietly as possible given the bones littering the floor in order to get a better look, making sure she didn't get out of screaming range should she run into trouble.

the Grand Goblin |

well, someone feel free to correct Erix
Lupi feels no need to correct, in her world the guy with the biggest muscles is always right :).
Perception(vs. Phin's Stealth): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18 Maybe not the best rolls, but good enough for Lupi.
Lupi raised her head from the rocks that dropped decades ago and asked "Anyone seen Phin lately?"

Baran 'Elmswright |

No living undead (pun intended) within scan distance, but it seems you people are awfully interested in rocks that dropped decades ago at the very least but not in the least in the light that shines from the next room right now...
It's funny - i was saving it for last because it seemed the most important

Baran 'Elmswright |

Lupi examined the collapsed area and said to Baran quietly, "You know... it might be just that it has collapsed during time..."
"Are you sure??? I was looking at these marks here and there seems to be some tooling ... oops, we seem to be holding everyone up." Baran followed Phin down the next passage but at a distance.

Alua Riversong |

Urgh, totally missed that sentence about the light!
"Can you see the spirits of these hobgoblins still around the room?"
Alua looked around, nodding. "Sure. There's all over at camp. I think they're curious about us. There's a little goblin there," she pointed behind Lupi, "he's pretty friendly, he's been helping me with my requests. There's a big hobgoblin warrior here, she followed us in from outside. In fact, I think most of the spirits came in from outside, though I'm not sure about that one...."

Kirsdrake |

The rough-floored tunnel game way to a large chamber. Phin, the first one inside, found herself standing among the rubble of its collapsed southeastern corner. The walls were carved of a dark stone, some parts of them intact enough to show the smooth finish the ages-old masons had crafted, the ceiling arched 30 feet overhead. At the center of the chamber stood a six-sided obelisk, dusty runes marking its sloping sides, its top rising almost all the way to the roof. Yet the pillar of carved stone was clearly damaged - strange scars marred its surface, as if the stone had been scored with blades hot enough to melt it. Around the obelisk stood four other hexagonal structures - broken and looted communal sarcophagi, judging from the bones and other remains littering the floor around them.
An everburning lantern lay on the floor to the east of the obelisk, and in its light, Phin could see three forms sitting on the floor, armored figures leaning against the rune-carved pillar. She noted that small stalagmites had begun to form around them, as mineral-rich water had dropped from the ceiling over decades. But before she had time to relay her findings to the others, the three figures stirred, audible cracks echoing in the room as limbs unmoving for many long years twitched, breaking the hold of the tiny little rock formations that had sough to entomb them.
"Intruders," a voice echoed from inside one helmet - no, not a helmet. A faceplate, Phin realized as she took a second look at the three figures. Not humans, certainly no goblins, but Warforged, all wearing heavy armor and sporting obvious wounds and signs of crude field repairs with tools and materials unsuited to the task, the metal painted with Cryan army's colors. "Identify yourselves."
We are NOT on combat rounds, but that may change depending on your actions. NPCs number 2 and 3 are what may be called regular Warforged troopers, but number 1 is a hulking brute wearing half a ton in armor and weaponry, but it's quite obvious none of them are anywhere near perfect health. Also, they haven't spotted Phin, but they can hardly miss Baran's approaching light in the darkness...

Erix Thorn |

As the Warforged rose, Erix tensed. His skin shivered with revulsion at the thought of fighting those already dead - but calmed when he realised what they faced. 'Forged? Old Forged.'
He quickly strode to the front, waved for Baran to stay back, and left enough gap on the side for Phin to move past if she wanted to chance it. "Name's Erix." He answered the challenge. "I was a sergeant in the War, but I'm a civilian now. We've a legal right to be here, so we're not intruders. On the other hand, we didn't think there was anyone still al... still down here. Who're you, then?"
profession:soldier: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 looking for insignia, rank or unit markings?

Kirsdrake |

No unit insignia that makes any sense to you, and few armies gave ranks to the Warforged - why bother pretending a walking siege weapon is a NCO, for example, it's not like they got paid any more than the infantry soldiers' boots did.
"Civilian. You have entered a stage of active military operations," the juggernaut of a 'forged grated as it rose to its feet... or foot. You could see its left leg was missing from the knee down and it had been given a very temporary-looking peg-leg of sorts made out of several swords tied together with leather straps.
"State your nationality and/or allegiance.

the Grand Goblin |

Lupi did not see but rather heard the metallic voice of the Warforged, "'Forged", she thought, "This will surely turn into violence". She spent a bit time to change the prepared Unseen Servant into Magic Missile.

Baran 'Elmswright |

Baran stood back and let Erix manage the first contact as the boy took-in the room. 'Everything about this is magnificant!' Clearly bemused, he spoke aloud, but retorically, "Nothing about this scene makes any sense. How long have these warforged been down here??? They are clearly still facing off against something. Perhaps the knife is a clue to what. I don't think those obelisks are cyran."

Phin the Raccoon |

An everburning lantern lay on the floor to the east of the obelisk, and in its light, Phin could see three forms sitting on the floor, armored figures leaning against the rune-carved pillar.
Phin was pretty sure she hadn't been seen by the warforged. In Sharn, she had pretty much avoided most 'forged. Most, if not all, were incapable of appreciating music or else thought their time was better used elsewhere. And since 'forged weren't exactly quiet, there was no reason for any of them to run in her circles. All this to say that she didn't have much experience with the living machines but she knew about their reputation to hit hard and to never give up. This meant that she kept to the periphery of the room and tried to remain unnoticed.
stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
She moved as soundlessly as a shadow to get herself into position across the room from the others. Every so often she would pause and take a better look at the obelisk. She found it curious that it was here, that there were 'forged seemingly protecting it, and that it looked like someone had been defacing it.
