Dotting in here to say I'm ready to go!

Female Human (Kelishite) (Versatile) Cleric 1

Dotting.

The villagers told you it was a shocking and brazen attack. The ogre strode into the village of Salvoy, picked up the old sage Lazino by his head, and unceremoniously stuffed him into a sack, shouting “Haanar wants to speak with you.” Not a moment later, the ogre ran laughing off into the hills. As soon as you strolled into Salvoy, nearly the entire population beseeched you to rescue their kindly, wise sage. They explained that Haanar is an exile who dabbled in foul magic, and that the odd man must have hired this ogre to kidnap Lazino. The most emotional request came from the sage’s granddaughter, Leyla, offering her entire savings, 20 gold coins, if you rescue grandpa.

Thankfully, the ogre’s trail was not difficult to follow. His massive footfalls pocked the ground softened by recent rains. One of the shaggy cattle of the region clearly ran afoul of the ogre—you found what remained of the poor beast eviscerated along the path, swarmed by flies and crows. Near sunset, you noticed the signs of fire in the distance, coming from atop a nearby hill. The drifting smell of cooking meat hinted it was a fire for comfort rather than catastrophe. But then you heard the screams for help, followed by a rumbling, mocking laughter, so deep that it rattles your teeth.

“Stop your crying, or I’ll put you on my hook and cook you all crispy.”

The man’s scream fades into a whimper, but the deep voice continues to laugh.

I've added a map to the slides. You know the ogre is likely at the top of the hill, but it's up to the party how you want to approach. Straight on up the path?

"I can climb the hill if necessary, but I'm not exactly the quietest of people. The monster will hear me coming

Female Human (Kelishite) (Versatile) Cleric 1

Kyra assured Lazino's grand daughter that they would do everything in their power to rescue her grandfather. While she had no wish to take the girl's life savings, it was a poor idea she thought to speak for the entire group in this. She would suggest taking a lesser amount to the others if they would be amendable.

But as they followed the trail of destruction, well, the subject had yet to come up.

Quote:
"I can climb the hill if necessary, but I'm not exactly the quietest of people. The monster will hear me coming"

"The Dawnflower overs new light to the darkest souls, but I fear talking to such a creature will not sway it. The important thing is we rescue Lazino, maybe we can keep the ogre's attention on us long enough for him to get away? Assuming he is not too badly injured to walk?"Then realizing she maybe getting ahead, she adds, "I think most of us will have to adhere to the path for now."

Ezren shrugs in response to Kyra's suggestion of sticking to the path, "It is not the worst plan, and I am unable to think of a superior option, so perhaps that is the course to follow? It would be advantageous for us to distract the ogre from his subject, after all." he offers.

"Fine, I guess there is such a thing as too much bravado."

Valeros grins, "At least not without more witnesses. Up the path we go, and swiftly!"

Seelah | Female LG Human Champion | HP 19/19 | AC 18 (20 w/ shield)| F +6 R +4 W +6 | Perception +4 | Speed 25ft | Active Conditions: None

Seelah gazed down the road, the sound of the beasts laughter ringing in her ears. "It's probably expecting us anyway. I say, why make it wait."

She had promised Leyla that she would do her absolute best to rescue the sage. Such heartfelt pleas for help were more than enough to get Seelah out here, more than the gold. After all, what was more right than bringing a beloved grandparent back to their family?

Merisel Elf Rogue 1 HP:16/16 AC: 18 F:+5 R:+9 W: +6 (+1 vs emotion) Perception:+6 (lowlight)

Arms akimbo, Merisel listens to the others debate strategy and just barely restrains herself from springing off into the dark , but instead says, "Yes, why wait...let's see what's for supper! "

As you come around the twist in the path, you spot the ogre at the top of the hill. The massive brute hobbles about on stumpy legs, its well-muscled torso covered in matted, sweaty body hair. Its disproportionately long arms giving it an ape-like appearance. He stands near a large fire over which a large slab of meat is roasting.

“Huh? Who are you?” the ogre growls, his brow furrowing in confusion. “More meat for my fire,” he laughs as he grabs his hook and javelin and lurches toward you, but not before pointing at a small, blue gremlin-like creature nearby and commanding it to attack as well.

“Help me! Please!” An old bearded man, bound at the entrance of the cave, begs as he struggles with his bonds.

GM Screen:

Valeros: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Ezren: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16
Kyra: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Seelah: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Merisiel: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Ogre: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Miflit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

I've move you all up on the map. Feel free to re-position yourself within the red square before taking your turn.

The way I do initiative is to roll for everyone and then allow the PCs to act in blocks between monsters.

Mersiel, it wasn't clear to me if you wanted to hide/sneak. I'll allow you to attempt to begin combat hidden if you want, just let me know. Hiding and sneaking are secret checks in 2e, so I'll roll it.

Initiative Order:

Kyra
Seelah
Ezren

Mitflit
Valeros
Merisiel
Ogre

Kyra, Seelah and Ezren may act.

Merisel Elf Rogue 1 HP:16/16 AC: 18 F:+5 R:+9 W: +6 (+1 vs emotion) Perception:+6 (lowlight)

definitely want to do the sneaky sneaky....

Am I able to use Hand of the Apprentice with my staff as a 2-handed blow?

Ezran pulls his staff back, hurling it at the giant, "You shall have no meat today, ogre!"

Hand of the Apprentice: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 231d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
2-handed damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Female Human (Kelishite) (Versatile) Cleric 1

Let's see , if I read this right, the 2nd Ed version of the bless spell should give a +1 Bonus to attack rolls to Kyra herself and her allies within 5 feet (our rogue and Champion). Let me know if I'm getting anything wrong.

"May the holy fire guide our blades!" And for a moment Kyra's eyes glow like twin dawns.

Bless spell is 2 actions, leaving one action... I think that includes movement? So..from between our rogue and champion and move up 4 squares down the road.

Seelah | Female LG Human Champion | HP 19/19 | AC 18 (20 w/ shield)| F +6 R +4 W +6 | Perception +4 | Speed 25ft | Active Conditions: None

Sorry all, been dealing with a broken down care past couple days.

Appreciating Ezran and Kyra's zeal, Seelah runs ahead of them, determined to take this monster down as swiftly as possible.

Spend 1 action striding, 1 to pull out shortbow, and 1 to shoot.

Attack at Ogre: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3

I did edit my original post, if that's not a problem. I took a second look at stuff and realized perhaps I shouldn't quickly just post something.

@Ezren, I couldn't find anything that says you can't get 2-handed damage, so let's go with it. I figure 2-handed is more since you're using more force and you can probably propel the staff magically with that much force.

@Kyra Bless is a 5' emanation from the caster. So as you move, it moves with you. It lasts for 1 minute, so 10 rounds. Each turn, you can spend an action to increase the radius by 5' so let me know if you want to do that. I moved you forward on the map as per your post.

Ezren sends his staff sailing through the air and it smashes right into the ogres forehead. Ooof! What the—? it grunts. Seelah gets a shot in as well, her bolt sinking into one of its meaty arms. I'm gonna feast well tonight when I get my hands on you lot!

The little blue gremlin thing moves forward, but calls back, These guys? Are you sure boss? It moves forward a bit and then pulls out a dart and throws it at Seelah. It really gets a lot into and manages to hit her, but it doesn't do a lot of damage.

GM Screen:

dart: 1d20 + 8 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 8 - 2 = 24 damage: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
stealth: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
stealth: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Initiative Order:

Kyra
Seelah (-1)
Ezren
Mitflit
Valeros
Merisiel

Ogre

Valeros and Merisiel are up. If you want to climb the cliff to the south, it's a DC 17 Athletics check, just FYI. I moved you both up a bit to the edge of cover from the cliff. You can start your actions from there.

Merisiel, you're far enough back that you haven't been spotted yet. You are sneaking, feeling pretty confident that you can move out into the open without the monsters spotting you. When sneaking you move at 1/2 your speed, so 15'. You're good for one movement. If you want to remain in stealth, let me know how many movements you want to make, up to 3 and I'll make those checks.

Valerous strides forward confidently, moving himself adjacent to the goblin without much difficulty. He then raises he shield and braces for impact.

"Come and get me, you little pests."

Stride, Stride, Raise Shield

FYI, You guys should be able to move your tokens on the map.

Female Human (Kelishite) (Versatile) Cleric 1

I think I maybe going out of turn here, but I moved Kyra on the map as one action, and extending the bless five ft radius when she can as another.

I can count that as your next turn if you like. Once I have Merisiel's action, the ogre will act and then you'll be up again.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Female Human (Kelishite) (Versatile) Cleric 1

Please do, and thanks.

Merisel Elf Rogue 1 HP:16/16 AC: 18 F:+5 R:+9 W: +6 (+1 vs emotion) Perception:+6 (lowlight)

Merisel moves forward , keeping to the shadows, or behind people things to avoid notice...

Yup, 3 moves at stealth please

GM Screen:

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Merisiel, since you were still behind the cliff, I counted the movement you made as one normal movement. Go ahead and move yourself another 30' for two movements. Regardless, you think maybe the ogre spots you but the mitflit still seems oblivious.

The ogre charges down the hill, raising its brutal-looking hook. It swipes it at Valeros's feet, but it can't knock the solid-footed warrior down. Bah! Stupid human... it grumbles, taking a more direct swipe at him. Again, he misses and shouts in frustration.

Trip: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
Attack: 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (9) + 12 - 5 = 16

Initiative Order:

Round Two:
Kyra
Seelah (-1)
Ezren

Mitflit
Valeros
Merisiel
Ogre

Seelah and Ezren are up! Also, Kyra, how far did you move? I think you might have another action. Extending Bless is just one action.

Ezren chants a spell, and sends forth a flurry of magic at the ogre as it tries to hit Valeros, the trio of magical missiles slamming into the hulking beast.

Magic Missile, 3 Actions.

Magic Missile: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (3, 4, 4) + 3 = 14

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Female Human (Kelishite) (Versatile) Cleric 1

True. Had one more action. I have moved forward three more and that should let our fighter benefit from the bless

"Hang on, Valeros!" And she moves closer, taking the power of the goddess with her to fuel the warrior.

Seelah | Female LG Human Champion | HP 19/19 | AC 18 (20 w/ shield)| F +6 R +4 W +6 | Perception +4 | Speed 25ft | Active Conditions: None

Seeing the ogre and mitflit come closer to her companions, Seelah let out a battle cry as she drops her bow, and runs over in front of Kyra. "Down with you!" she screams, as she unsheathes her sword and strikes at the beast in front of her.

Free action: drop bow
Action 1) Stride up to the ogre
2) Unsheathe longsword
3) Strike

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

If the ogre attacks and hits Valeros, Kyra, or Merisiel, Seelah will activate Retributive Strike, reducing the damage by 3, and performing a strike in return as a reaction.

Retributive Strike: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

Ezren's magic missiles strike the ogre and leave smoking spots on its skin. Meanwhile, Kyra and Seelah advance, the former continuing to pray for a blessing over the party, while the latter almost manages to hit the ogre, but just misses. Seelah stands ready to defend her colleagues, nonetheless.

The mitflit speaks in a strange language, twisting his fingers about. Those close to him feel the bolster that Kyra's prayers had provided cease. He then grins and draws his shortsword.

Mitflit casts Bane. This is the opposite of Bless and the cancel each other out where they overlap. If you end up only effected by Bane (i.e. move outside of Bless radius), it's a DC 16 will save or take -1 to attack rolls. So, right now Valeros is the only one in Bane, but he's also in Bless, so they cancel out.

Initiative Order:

Round Two:
Kyra (Bless 10' 2/10)
Seelah (-1)
Ezren
Mitflit (Bane 5' 1/10)
Valeros
Merisiel

Ogre (-23)

Valeros and Merisiel are up.

Seelah | Female LG Human Champion | HP 19/19 | AC 18 (20 w/ shield)| F +6 R +4 W +6 | Perception +4 | Speed 25ft | Active Conditions: None

I just realized I forgot that Kyra had cast bless during my turn, and didn't apply that +1. Does that make a difference?

Oh! Yes, good catch. That makes it a hit. I’ll add the damage to the ogre. Sorry about that.

Merisel Elf Rogue 1 HP:16/16 AC: 18 F:+5 R:+9 W: +6 (+1 vs emotion) Perception:+6 (lowlight)

Seeing that the Mitflit might still be unaware of her presense, Merisel moves forward in to range and jabs at the little creature with her rapier...

Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Just in case it applies: Sneak Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4

GM Screen:

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17

Merisiel weaves her way silently through the battlefield, unobserved by the little blue creature who is too occupied with the large warrior in its face. Too bad for it, as the rogue's blade comes darting out of the darkness and skewers it. It coughs and grasps at the steel protruding through its chest for a moment and then slumps over dead.

Initiative Order:

Round Two:
Kyra (Bless 10' 2/10)
Seelah (-1)
Ezren
Mitflit
Valeros
Merisiel
Ogre (-28)

Valeros is up.

Since I don't think I've explicitly done it yet.

"Really? Is that the best you can do?" Valeros says out loud as he draws his sword. "Try harder next time.

Valeros then raises his shield and strikes at the Ogre.

Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

In summary: Draw Weapon, Raise Shield, Strike

If I don't need to draw my weapon:

"Here have another!"

Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 1 = 12
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Revised actions are: Raise Shield, Strike, Strike

The ogre grunts and brings his hook down on Valeros again. Both Valeros and Seelah manage to get their shields in and slow down the blow. It gets through but a lot of the force the ogre had behind it is gone. Valeros, I applied your Shield Block reaction. Let me know if you'd prefer not to use it.

Seelah makes a retributive strike and the ogre shouts, rancid breath hitting everyone nearby. He swings his hook over Seelah's head, but then sweeps it down, surprising her and knocking her off of her feet. Takes one action to stand back up.

Attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21 Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Attack: 1d20 + 12 - 5 ⇒ (5) + 12 - 5 = 12 Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Trip: 1d20 + 12 - 10 ⇒ (19) + 12 - 10 = 21

Round Three:
Kyra (Bless 10' 3/10)
Seelah (-1, prone)
Ezren
Mitflit
Valeros (-3)
Merisiel
Ogre (-42)

Everyone is up. The ogre is looking pretty beat up.

"Time to go for broke!"

Valeros strikes twice in quick succession, and then braces against any return blow.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 9 + 1 = 25
Damage 1: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Attack 2: 1d20 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 4 + 1 = 24
Damage 2: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Seelah | Female LG Human Champion | HP 19/19 | AC 18 (20 w/ shield)| F +6 R +4 W +6 | Perception +4 | Speed 25ft | Active Conditions: None

"Now that's one thing we can agree on!"

Seelah follows suit, slashing away with her sword, before putting up her shield to brace for any retaliation.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 7 + 1 = 16
Damage 1: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Attack 2: 1d20 + 7 + 1 - 5 ⇒ (14) + 7 + 1 - 5 = 17
Damage 2: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Action 1 and 2) Strike
Action 3) Raise Shield, AC is now 20

If the ogre is still somehow alive after this round, Seelah will activate Retributive Strike as her reaction, if applicable. Roll as follows.

Retributive Strike: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 1 = 21
Retributive Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Valeros and Seelah's blades slice deep into the ogre. It wobbles a bit on its stumpy legs. My... dinner it gasps and, one arm outstretched toward the fire on the hill, it falls over dead.

Lazino is up on the hill near the fire, bound.

I assume you'll release Lazino. Anything else anyone wants to do in the calm after battle?

Female Human (Kelishite) (Versatile) Cleric 1

Kyra moves to Lazino and starts to free him, "Are you injured, a loved one at home worries for you."

Ezren looks over the corpse of the ogre, muttering an incantation.

Casting Detect Magic, and investigating anything interesting.

Valeros takes a moment to check on the condition of his shield.

"Hmm, held up better than I though. Maybe they were right about this whole 'sword-and-board' thing."

Merisel Elf Rogue 1 HP:16/16 AC: 18 F:+5 R:+9 W: +6 (+1 vs emotion) Perception:+6 (lowlight)

Merisel relaxes, swiftly cleaning her rapier and sheathing it. She then commences a search of the ogre and it's little friend, as well as the camp for any items of value...

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Seelah | Female LG Human Champion | HP 19/19 | AC 18 (20 w/ shield)| F +6 R +4 W +6 | Perception +4 | Speed 25ft | Active Conditions: None

With the ogre falling, Seelah sheathed her blade. She walked over to where she had dropped her bow, stowing it once again on her back. With that, she joined Kyra at the top of the hill with Lazino. Giving him the warmest smile she could she checked him for wounds. "I am glad we made it in time. You are safe with us, worry not. We will return you to your village."

Medicine to check for wounds: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Lazino thanks Kyra and Seelah for their help.

Suddenly, the standing stones not far from the ogre’s cave begin to glow with an emerald-green radiance. From the light steps forth a young man, his features distorted with rage. He has a otherworldly look to him, as if he is not entirely human. At his side stands a wolf.

“There you are, sage! I see that you’ve brought friends, but it doesn’t matter. You will tell me the truth of my birth.”

A light of recognition on Lazino’s face turns into sadness and then compassion. He takes a few steps toward the man. “Your father never told you, did he?” the old sage says. “I can see it in your eyes and features. Your father was a fool who gave of his heart too freely. Before you were born, he was deceived by a mysterious woman that visited our small town. She was gone after only a fortnight, but nine months later, a child was left on your father’s door. It was then that I knew that your mother was a hag, a powerful creature and decidedly evil, but I hoped that through Ragir’s love you might be raised to be an upstanding member of the community. It seems I was wrong, but it’s not too late. You could still find a place with us!”

The Sage's words seem to have had an effect on the man and he's paused in thought. What would you like to do?

Merisel Elf Rogue 1 HP:16/16 AC: 18 F:+5 R:+9 W: +6 (+1 vs emotion) Perception:+6 (lowlight)

When the Merisel catches sight of the green glow and the man steps from the light, she forgets her treasure search and crouches , a dagger in hand, ready to throw...

"Really now gentlemen. There's no need for any violence. Let's talk it out and settle everything over a good pint."

Valeros turns to the Sage. "And those are some pretty harsh words you are throwing there. Do you have any proof of your words other than 'because I said so'?"

Female Human (Kelishite) (Versatile) Cleric 1

Kyra says to the young man, "My name is Kyra. I confess, there is much I do not know, even having heard what I had, but I know this much. Lazino speaks of his hopes for you. And, Sarenrae teaches us that however dark a night of the soul we wander in, there is light awaiting. For the wicked, a path to redemption, for the lost, by honesty a path to purpose and the search for what is best in us. My goddess is one of second chances, of better paths. No one innocent was hurt here, and that is good. Whatever your ancestry, you can choose a live of virtue. Whether you try to fit in this community, or walk alone for a time until you find a new family, we are each only as much a villain as we let ourselves be,"

She offers her hand to him.

Diplomacy roll hope I got this right 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

In hindsight, should have added this. Lazino seems to have talked the man down from being outright hostile. If anyone wants to make a Diplomacy check as Kyra did, you can do so even if not trained. In this case you would just add your CHA modifier (if any). I think most of you are trained, however. You don't have to, of course.

Valeros and Merisiel, you're free to alter your action if you want, given this information. Or you can just leave it as is.

Valeros will attempt the diplomacy, even though he isn't particular good at straight talk.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (10) + 0 = 10

Seelah | Female LG Human Champion | HP 19/19 | AC 18 (20 w/ shield)| F +6 R +4 W +6 | Perception +4 | Speed 25ft | Active Conditions: None

"Kyra is right. There is still a chance to walk away before it becomes too late. Lazino can help you find what you need to live a better life for yourself. Whether that is with the village or not is yet to be decided, but the chance is for you to take."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Merisel Elf Rogue 1 HP:16/16 AC: 18 F:+5 R:+9 W: +6 (+1 vs emotion) Perception:+6 (lowlight)

Seeing that the man from the portal had calmed down somewhat, Merisel sheathes her dagger and saunters fowards, "Yeah, the old man talks some sense, you'd do well to listen to yer elders..."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

The sage sputters at Valeros. "Proof? What, I—" He trails off, lost for words.

The strange man listens impassively to Seelah and Kyra. He scoffs at the suggestion of settling things with alcohol and frowns deeply at Merisiel. "My elders? My elders are the reason I live this cursed life! Lazino, I paid that ogre to bring you here thinking you'd have the answers I seek, but I see now that you're as useless as ever!"

"Haanar, no!" yells the sage as the man, Haanar, darts forward. He raises his hand, speaking softly to himself, and the grass and weeds around most of the party grow unnaturally fast, attempting to wrap around everyone's legs.

Area marked on map in bright green. Every round you start your turn in the area, you must make a Reflex Save vs. a DC of 21. If you fail, take a -10 penalty to your movement. If you critically fail (roll 11 or lower or a nat 1) you are immobilized for the turn. If slowed or immobilized you can spend an action to attempt to Escape to remove the effect for that turn.

GM Screen:

Valeros: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Ezren: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Kyra: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Seelah: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
