"So, do we let these guys go? I have no evidence of wrong-doing, luckily for him, but that does not mean much. Perhaps if he submitted to magical questioning and we make sure he is not up to anything to the detriment of the society?"

Sir Hendric the Vigilant wrote:

"Of course death means something. I know you are not a fool, so why act like one? That was a moronic stunt to pull.

We are potential allies of circumstance. Why try to kill one of us? Your name and reputation alone grant you our attention, Zurnzal. Not your recklessness.
So there's a scroll here. Fortunate for us that Pete was quick enough, or we'd have had to waste valuable resources undoing your error."

Killing a PC to get our attention makes no sense. And as Assassin is Int-based, I am sure he isn't stupid. But whatever.

”Oh, come on, don’t tell me you haven’t died before. How long did it take to come back? Two days? One? A couple hours? All it took was a couple calls and you were back on your feet like nothing happened. You got money and connections and even death becomes a simple roadbump. I could’ve done a lot worse—pummeled you to oblivion, knocked your body to dust. Even if I had done that it was a simple ten-minute-casting-time away from coming back. Death doesn’t do a bloody thing but burn a hole in your pocket.”

The better question,” Arnaut drawls from behind the other Seekers, ”is why you waited for us to appear. You certainly did not wait for permission to enter the Lodge, so I cannot for the life of me think of what would be preventing you from simply leaving in the same way.”

He grins a co-conspirator’s grin. ”Which would imply you actually have been down here waiting for us specifically to arrive. But why? For love?” A rose has somehow appeared in the bard’s hand, which he tosses behind him carelessly. ”Unlikely - even among the people of Belkam, killing a long-lost lover on sight is considered bad taste. For coin?” He flips a piece of gold high up into the air that never comes down. ”Also unlikely - you would have to perform yet another service to be paid. For glory then?” Is that a spotlight shining on Arnaut now? ”An assassin who seeks glory very quickly becomes a very dead assassin, and we all know you are much smarter than that. For revenge?” The light turns blood-red. ”Ah, now that is a worthy reason to risk your life here once more. So spill the beans, dear Zurnzal - what would you like to tell us about Vahlo and Torch?”

I dunno, Sense Motive to see if he’s hiding something? Diplomacy to make him more willing to talk?

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Zurnzal pinches the bridge of his nose and sighs heavily at the Shelynite’s words.

”You’re gonna make me say it, aren’t ya? Fine. I don’t like undead—they unnerve me to no end. With the Tyrant right on Absalom’s door and all the sh*t going on upstairs—and Torch being a slave to his hate-boner—I do not want to be in this city—or this lodge—any longer! By the time me and my men made the decision to abandon ship, you lot had already been spotted around the Grand Lodge, and I can’t risk you lot putting my body on lockdown to prevent my resurrection—or worse: becoming a slave of the lich. We could’ve confronted y’all upstairs, but at least down here we have a tactical advantage if these negotiations go belly-up. There. That’s my pathetic motivation. Happy?!”

Those of y’all with an absurd Sense Motive bonus know that Zurnzal is telling the truth.

Bellamin calms Fluffy, stopping her before she starts ripping into Zurnzal.
As the victim of your most recent violent assumption, I'm less inclined to let you go. Perhaps you'd like to escape as a mouse with only a small chance of thinking yourself one.

Fluffy's normal standing command is to guard Bellamin.

”Oh, I completely understand. And I’m sure you would agree with me that it’s really much easier to run away from the endless hordes of undead if one’s not overburdened with things that might not legally belong to you.”

Arnaut’s fine time let him and his men go, but would like to make sure they’re not walking out of the Repository with their pockets full of Society stuff when they do. Don’t think we could really expect them to leave all their equipment with us, so he’s not really suggesting they do that.

Zurnzal folds his arms and tilts his head in thought.

”Torch has outsourced jobs to me on multiple occasions—he’s something of a regular of mine. In this particular case I was hired to assist in Torch’s raid of the Grand Lodge. He ordered me and my crew to search the Repository for evidence against the Decemvirate or valuables he can use to pay off some of his backers. Frankly, I couldn’t care less about the crap in here, I just want to get outta here! Zurnzal grins.

”I had no intention, unless you count destroying the occasional zombie that irks me. Boys!”

“Gotta pack up, boss!”

The half-orc shrugs. His eyes glance over toward Hendric for a moment and he sighs. ”We got a minute; there’s something I need to talk to you about specifically,”

Zurnzal moves over, arms folded, and looks the knight in the eye. ”We’re both now wanderers without a home—you just didn’t have to deal with that from birth. I’ve heard of your personal mission, so from one child of Lastwall to another, let me give ya some intel, because I’m feeling generous:

“Torch has connections all over the Inner Sea Region, including far south. Geb, the nation, is in turmoil, to the point where Geb, the wizard, has finally gotten off of his incorporeal ass; the Harlot Queen has vanished.” Zurzal shrugs. ”That’s all I know.”

A pair of half-orcs carrying several cases of alchemical equipment emerge from the fog and make their way toward the staircase that the Pathfinders descended from.

”Guess that’s my cue.” The half-orcs make their way toward the staircase. Before they ascend, Zurnzal looks over his shoulder toward the Seekers.

”Vahlo made a b-line toward Skyreach with the Grandmaster on his tail. Pleasure doing business with y’all. Remember: ten minutes of loitering.”

With that, the half-orcs ascend the staircase and disappear from sight.

The Fight you Didn’t Have:
Zurnzal was a weird brawler/assassin that focuses on dirty tricks, but the threat were the two alchemists: one was to drink an extract of giant form I to turn into a troll and assist Zurnzal in melee while the other one drank a caging bomb admixture and pelted with bombs at a range, including dispelling bombs, force bombs, and frost bombs.

What do you do?

Arnaut snorts. "Of course they're in Skyreach - where better to have a dramatic death scene than on top of Absalom's tallest tower?" Glancing around the room, he shrugs. "No sense testing our new friend's patience - and if there's a scroll of true resurrection here, there's probably some other things that could help destroy an undead monstrosity before it destroys the Society. Shall we?"

Echolocation can help somewhat with not walking into traps, and I'm sure we'll put everything back here when we're done. ;-)

Sir Hendric nods to Zurnzal.
"Thank you for that information. Torch, for all his machinations, is still a potentially valuable ally. I will seek to spare his life.
And as to Geb and the one who was the Herald of Aroden... something is happening, but exactly what, who can say? Perhaps what remains of Her will join the battle against Her former tormentor. Or perhaps the Tyrant has seized control away from Geb.
I may live to find out. Or not. If this is not your fight, then fare you well. It is my fight, that I know."

As she rummages through the intimidating amount of material in the place, she shakes her head, deep in thought.

"Interesting news about Geb. I wonder what it portents. As far as I know there is no lost love between Arazni and The Whispering Tyrant. With him on the move, perhaps she intends to intervene and this is the reason for her absence from Geb. I wonder if she is near by."

Marta is only half concentrating on the search. The other half is constantly surveying her surroundings, ready for the worst. Her halo briefly blinks out and reappears a moment later. Bellamin can UMD to cast it without consuming the scroll - it's on the Druid list, then Hendric can UMD to cast it himself.

I'm well aware of the echolocation shenanigans going on with this party; I would've told you if you could perceive something with the spell. That said...

Fluffy moves through the fog and finds herself face-to-face with a towering demonic giant with ram's horns and arms ending in blades!

The spoiler below is for anyone that can perceive the enemy, which is currently just Fluffy.

Knowledge (religion) 26:
This is a nightwalker, a nightshade that commands great armies of undead. Nightshades are horrific undead that reside in the Negative Energy Plane and are empowered by the energy of that plane. Nightwalkers delight in causing despair in their enemies and are masters of destroying a creature's favorite items to deprive them of that advantage. They can do so so effectively that they can make a sunder attempt with one of its claws as a swift action.

If you exceed the DC by 5+, open the spoiler below

Spoiler:
Nightwalkers command fear in their enemies with a single glare. Those who look at a nightwalker risk simply cowering in fear before the nightshade's might.

If you exceed the DC by 10+, open the spoiler below

Spoiler:
Nightwalkers have DR/good and silver.

Peter summons the celestial tiger, but it looks up at the nightwalker and whimpers in place, refusing to move. And it had to start its turn within 30’ of it otherwise it couldn’t perceive it well enough to charge. And you can’t exactly order the creature with animal intelligence to avert its gaze. I’m assuming that you summoned it the bare minimum distance away it needed to be in order to charge, so I moved it there.

EDIT: And for clarity's sake, that Will save from Fluffy at the end of my previous post was her save against the nightwalker's gaze.
