Correct. The trick with unarmed strikes is that you don’t have to draw the weapon (since it can’t ever been un-drawn and there’s no way to tell from looking either a character’s fists are deadly weapons, so we can get around the specific case of “drawing a weapon”. But yes - please don’t attack anyone within sight of anyone affected by Arnaut.

| Strange Aeons | Hell's Rebels | ◆◇↻

Hendric is right; the list is not exhaustive, but I would call the unarmed strike a “potential threat” which would give them a new save rather than ending it outright. If they took damage, though, then it would turn from a potential threat to an obvious one.

Okay, so while it specifies that there’s eight of them it gives their save bonuses as a unified force (similar to a troop), but it gives the exact number of them precisely for the purposes of stuff like Fascinate which only affects so many creatures.

Will vs Confusion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

Will vs Calm Emotions: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

Will vs Fascinate: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

All but one of the thieves sit down and listen to Arnaut's song.

That bought you guys a bit of time, but Arnaut can’t do that forever, and casting any spell breaks Fascinate. And again, let's try to not clutter the Gameplay thread with too many OOC conversations.

Marta barks out the Command (as per spell, DC 18) at the remaining thief to "DROP!" and walks up to him, putting her foot on the relic he just dropped (if successful).

Either way she says, "You are starting to make me angry. If you run, even if you escape me, you better be able to outrun that horse. If I were you I'd take my chances with the town guard rather than me or the good knight running down a thief. So, do you feel like being an idiot today."

Bellamin turns back to the rest of the party - I can just burn them out, but fire is the only wall I know. Maybe a Web? There's no need for them to die just yet.

If there is a wall nearby to serve as the second anchor, Bellamin will cast Web covering all the thieves he can while Fluffy takes off after the runner. Otherwise he will cast Slow, targeting all those he can.

DC21 Reflex or be caught in the Web if it can be cast. DC21 Will for the Slow otherwise.

Sir Hendric does what he had planned to; a Spirited Charge unarmed strike on a thief who seems not otherwise neutralized.

Will roll again if desired, or use the rolls from above, or have the GM roll. Charge at +26 for 2d3+80.

| Strange Aeons | Hell's Rebels | ◆◇↻

I’ll just use your previous roll, Hendric.

Hendric charges and with a solid punch knocks out one of the thieves. Fluffy similarly bites into a thief and knocks him unconscious.

Reflex vs Web: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24

Many of the thieves narrowly dodge out of the way of the web, but one of them gets stuck.

Can confirm that Jordan’s player is on vacation and will be back around Monday. I’ll be botting him until then:

Jordan starts inspiring courage and casts scorching ray, which he delivers through his Arrowsong Strike.

Jordan Attack: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (13) + 23 = 36
Damage: 1d8 + 6 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 6 + 6 + 3 = 20 Scorching Ray Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 1) = 19

I know that this isn’t how this works mechanically, but it’s how the scenario is written, so bear with me.

The thieves manage to get a few number of hits in before half of their number fall unconscious.

Damage to everyone: 5d8 ⇒ (4, 4, 8, 3, 2) = 21

Two of the thieves then cast dimension door and teleport the still-conscious thieves away!

From the scenario: “Once all the PCs have acted, if the group hasn’t been subdued, the group deals its listed damage as bludgeoning damage to all PCs and companion creatures who took actions against them. After inflicting damage, the group separates and runs before the second round begins and the PCs can effectively subdue them.”

What do you do?

| Strange Aeons | Hell's Rebels | ◆◇↻

Just double-checked the wording in the scenario and I'm going to have to do a slight retcon: the thieves that cast dimension door also took the unconscious thieves with them, so there isn't anyone left to interrogate.

Drat. I had thought that since the only component of the spell is a word and because the only command I gave was to drop, that it would hardly be considered violent. So, all the thieves escaped with the relics?

Without Spellcraft, it’s near-impossible to tell whether someone is casting message or fireball. Hence, all spellcasting is inherently considered violent for these purposes.

Arnaut sighs heavily as he watches the scoundrels scatter. ”Marta. I’m afraid I must apologize for not communicating well. But many of my methods of resolving these situations non-violently require, well, non-violence from my companions. That includes all forms of spellcasting - especially the ones that involve yelling at people. Should we seek to use such methods again in the future, please bear that in mind.” He bows to the inquisitor, then inhales dramatically. ”Shall we see if any of our dearly departed friends have tried to join their fellows in skulking around the Lodge? At the very least, I’d hate for these other... opportunists to hear about us and scatter before they get to know us personally.”

That’s one vote for another group of thieves.

"I thought the fascination strategy was a good one. We only had to deal with the one leftover. I had no idea that shouting a single word, and not even a violent one, would cause them all to scatter. I have nothing that would be effective against the looters except miracles from my deity, and it seems that these are not helpful in this situation? I'm not sure confusion will be all that effective. 50% chance of not getting away, but better than nothing I guess. I think blasting them all would probably work best. I can cast a Blistering Invective to make them a little less resistant and do a little damage."

It doesn’t really matter which of the two groups of thieves you go to next, so let’s just say that it’s the one stealing documents from Skyreach.

The Seekers make their way over to Skyreach and find themselves face-to-face with another group of thieves! Just like the previous group, they all look like they’re about to make a fighting withdraw!

Same rules as before: you all get a single standard and swift action to attempt to subdue these guys; assume the most advantageous positioning.

Alright, different tactics. #NoMoreMisterNiceGuy

Arnaut whistles sharply, and a shimmering curtain descends like a backdrop over the thieves. As it touches them, the air is abruptly filled with blaring noises just out of tune enough to be truly terrible on the ear.

So, this will be interesting. Arnaut can heal PCs up afterwards with Soothing Performance as needed. Every scoundrel takes the “primary” damage (2d6+14), and then takes 2d4 damage for every other person. Since we can assume the most advantageous positioning, they’re all now within 10 ft of each other (squeezing if necessary), meaning 7 instances of “secondary” damage.

Sonic damage (primary): 2d6 + 14 ⇒ (1, 4) + 14 = 19
Sonic damage (secondary): 14d4 ⇒ (3, 3, 1, 3, 4, 4, 3, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 2, 2) = 43

So 62 damage to each person, for a total of 496. Not too bad, if I do say so myself.

Nose in the air, Arnaut sniffs once. ”Pathetic.” And let’s just add Dirge of Doom in there for good measure to make them shaken. Might help our other spellcasters.

*Rubs Eyes* *Double-Checks wording of spell* *Double-Checks Scenario* Well…I think Thomas Jefferson says my reaction best.

With a single spell and a chorus of discord, the thieves all simultaneously fall.

And as the scenario is written, if the party pacifies a group of thieves then there’s at least one person to interrogate, so if Arnaut wants to just use a second wall of sound for the third group then I can just hand-wave that last one. That said, that wall of sound did just flat-out kill at least half of these guys.

Gonna say that at least one of this group of thieves is just 3 cure light wand charges away from being conscious—assuming you all want to interrogate him, of course.

"Sure seemed like some sort of geas or compulsion spell. Perhaps a domination spell?"

Though she had only heard of geas spells, she was well familiar with domination as an inquisitor of the conversion inquisition, such as Marta was, was able to temporarily exert total control over a person. But that only lasts a brief minute and poor Janira would have to have been under the compulsion for far longer to be in such a miserable state.

"May I attend to your wounds? I carry a wand of cure light wounds with me at all times and it should do the trick. While I'm attending to your wounds, would you care to tell us how you found yourself trying to tear the place down with your bare hands?"

”Oh, don’t worry; I’ve got my own wand. But if you’d kindly use it I can answer your question.

“So I found undead exiting the Mausoleum en masse, so I retreated into Skyreach. I found a member of the Decemvirate and explained the situation to them, but they just laughed at me and pointed a sword at me, telling me to chronicle the interior of the Center House. They seemed to be moving about the Grand Lodge with some kind of purpose.”

”I don’t suppose they were wearing a three-pronged helm, were they?” Arnaut asks, almost rhetorically at this point. ”Did you happen to catch which direction they went after toying with you so dastardly? ”It was one with a three-pronged helm. How did you—?”

Before she has a chance to finish that thought, she is interrupted by Peter and nods, making her way towards the gate with the phantom steed, leaving the Seekers to make their way toward their next destination: the Repository.

To the Repository

Coiling blue mist moves around this chamber in thick wall-like sheets that rise up to the ceiling some eighty-feet above. The floor and walls of the chamber are stone, but the outer walls remain partly obscured by the bluish fog. Items of all sorts can be seen through the mist, including a variety of statues, exhibits, arcane apparatuses, bookshelves, and even a distant meditation area briefly visible through a temporary break in the fog. Stone plinths burn with colored fire, each illuminating part of the immense repository chamber. A single set of stairs ascends along the southwestern wall. Map Updated

"Just a thought, but we might want to remove the helm from whoever is wearing it before doing anything too rash," Arnaut muses as the group floats over the Lodge's lawns. "I'd hate to think someone dastardly would put it on someone else in the hopes we might tie up some loose ends for them. And we've already seen that they have some sway over minds."

--------------------------------

Inside the Repository, the bard whistles appreciatively. "Just imagine the kinds of scene changes you could do behind these effects," he murmurs. "And how many terrible actors you could hide behind them, ready to jump out and surprise the audience. But cheer up - everyone knows a proper drama needs the protagonists to struggle a bit in the second act so their triumph in the third is more impactful." Even if the other Seekers have heard this kind of pep talk many times before, it still fills them with optimism.

Casting good hope, extending with rod to 28 minutes. Also, remember that we are still benefitting from mass fly. GM, how do the fog walls interact with echolocation?

| Strange Aeons | Hell's Rebels | ◆◇↻

Fog doesn't block line of effect, thus it doesn't block echolocation. There is area beyond the fog, but Arnaut doesn't otherwise hear anything interesting.

Jordan carefully draws his bow from his back, knocks two arrows, and calls out into the mist. "Zurnzal. You still here?" He waits for a response, carefully turning his head to the party while keeping his bow still. "Shoot anything that moves and isn't green, right? Sound reasonable?"

I would like to add that Jordan waits to do this until everybody seems ready.

"Be safe, Janira. We will deal with the monstrosity."
Sir Hendric watches the halfling go with a fond recollection of an ill-advised yet successful lance charge on one of his first missions... and also recalls some more recent help she provided on an extremely challenging mission.
----

"Bellamin, do you wish to use this scroll before I expend it?"
Echolocation is purchased as a druid scroll in PFS, so it is a 4th-level divine spell and Bellamin could cast it with a 5th-level slot.

After Bellamin uses it (if he wishes to), Sir Hendric will cast the spell from the scroll.

This happens after Jordan calls out, so before Hendric starts doing stuff with his echolocation scroll.

Peter, unlike Arnaut, notices a person to the east north is to the right beyond the fog. Suddenly feeling himself as in a surprise round, he proceeds to summon a kalavakus demon that casts haste on everyone.

Arnaut, Peter, and Marta notice an invisible, flying half-orc charging out of the fog to the north his charge began from outside the range of the echolocation! The half-orc stops just above Bellamin as his fist swings at the sorcerer!

Damage: 1d8 + 11 + 5d6 ⇒ (2) + 11 + (2, 5, 1, 2, 6) = 29

One of the two polished steel studs along the knuckles of the half-orc’s glove shatters to dust as his fist impacts with the sorcerer’s trachea!

Bellamin Fort; roll twice, take the lower: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (6) + 11 = 171d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

And I’m going to assume a folio reroll since you guys know Zurnzal is an assassin.

Bellamin Folio Reroll (if he wishes to use it):
I’m actually not sure how this would work since you had to roll twice and take the lower, but I’m going to put the dice roll below anyway.
Reroll: 1d20 + 11 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 11 + 4 = 31

Bellamin’s throat shatters from the momentum of the half-orc’s punch and sends him flying into the ground, where his skull cracks on the concrete! Bellamin is instantly dead.

The half-orc, clad in black leather and floating five feet above the ground, cracks his knuckles as he looks over the Seekers before him.

"Of course death means something. I know you are not a fool, so why act like one? That was a moronic stunt to pull.
We are potential allies of circumstance. Why try to kill one of us? Your name and reputation alone grant you our attention, Zurnzal. Not your recklessness.
So there's a scroll here. Fortunate for us that Pete was quick enough, or we'd have had to waste valuable resources undoing your error."

Killing a PC to get our attention makes no sense. And as Assassin is Int-based, I am sure he isn't stupid. But whatever.
