@Blacklock - Lol, that must be some really stale bread.

I have a question on casting my Find Familiar spell. It looks like I need 10 gp of components to cast it. Do I need to "stock up" on components at the start of the adventure or just subtract 10 gp every time I cast it?

Also, do I choose the form of the familiar every time I cast it?

Just subtract 10 gp when you cast it, and yes, you may choose its form each time you cast. (Put a note in your logsheet under the Notes section.)

FYI: Sorry for the disappearance, had to head out of town for a funeral (not a close relation, so it’s ok, just lotsa schedule shuffling around and lack of sleep and just got home). Was Zar smart enough to think of buying that? Seeing that the Mother Protector mentioned that Thar is cold, it would seem reasonable that he would want appropriate clothing (DC10)

Int: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Fortunately, Zar's ears at hearing that information are better his player's eyes in reading it. I'll say he bought the cold weather clothing before leaving. (-4 gp)

How does a potion of inspiration work? Does it give you advantage?

Also Aeshuura, how does that magic item from our previous adventure work? I'm used to PFS where everyone can buy what is on the sheet.

I have updated Tana to Monk Level 2. I added 5 + 2 (CON MODIFIER) =7 additional hit points, total is now 17 Hit Points.

Tana had 10gp, now +36ggp = 46gp total. Tana will purchase:

1 Short Bow 25gp
2 Quivers 1gp each x 2 = 2gp
2 Arrows (20 each) at 1gp each x 2 = 2gp
2 Grappling Hooks 2gp each x 2 = 4gp
1 Outfilt of Warm clothing 4gp
1 Blanket 5gp

Total Expense 42gp

If this is okay I will add this to Tanas Equipment. Do we need to purcase rations? Thank you in advance for your reply!

I'm trying to pick my new 2nd lvl spells. A few good ones to choose from. I think I'll also be taking the wand. Do I know how many charges it has? Does it cost me anything to take?


Crazy to think our damage output with those. If all 6 took it and cast at the highest charge 7...42d6+42 unerring force damage.

Just a heads up. I'm working 2 jobs today. I'll be checking in as often as I can, but there will be periods during the day when I can't respond immediately.

If we need to move things along quickly, perhaps Jarprax or Aeshuura could provide rolls and decisions on Tana's behalf. I present Tana as a team player. Tana will support the group decisions and make herself useful to benefit the group members. Again, I should be able to check in around noon, then around 5pm, and again after 10pm. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause, and I appreciate your understanding.

@Tana: I don't think Aeshuura ever said specifically, but usually this kind of game suggests posting 1/weekday + 1/weekend (so, around 5-6 posts/week). It feels a little more urgent to post in this game because there are a lot of players and the unread posts stack up quickly, but it doesn't seem to be terribly offensive to skip a day or two as your personal life requires. I imagine that if Aeshuura feels like they need a roll or decision from you, then they'll take control of Tana until you get back (usually people use terms like "bot" or "GMPC" to describe this).

Not having played AL before, how do you work downtime? Is it better to let it accumulate and then expend it all at once? The PHB is pretty vague about how it works (though there's more in Xanathar's).

Jarprax is proficient with the Herbalism Kit, so could he create some Antitoxin or Healing Potion? Xanathar's and the PHB agree that this would cost 25gp, but disagree about the time allocation (PHB = 10d; XGE: 1d). Jarprax only has enough gold for one anyway, but he could brew some for his companions if there's time and they want to pay the cost.

Can I get an answer on my question about the wand?

I was also wondering about downtime. What is the process for creating a scroll?


I think I know: the wand has 7 charges and recharges 1d6+1 at dawn. No cost, but you can only have 1 permanent magic item at this tier.

For scribing, there are rules in XGTE:

Scribing a Scroll:

With time and patience, a spellcaster can transfer a spell to a scroll, creating a spell scroll.

Resources. Scribing a spell scroll takes an amount of time and money related to the level of the spell the character wants to scribe, as shown in the Spell Scroll Costs table. In addition, the character must have proficiency in the Arcana skill and must provide any material components required for the casting of the spell. Moreover, the character must have the spell prepared, or it must be among the character’s known spells, in order to scribe a scroll of that spell.

If the scribed spell is a cantrip, the version on the scroll works as if the caster were 1st level.

@Jarprax, generally you can spend it either way, either keep track of DT spent or bank it to spend all at once. I would use the PHB rules for creating the healing potion, though I have not looked at the Xanathar's rules... your choice, though tier 1 it's not as big a deal as everyone has a potion.

So that was last season. They found that it was confusing new players and breaking immersion, so it is back to claim what you find. No need to track treasure check points anymore. Once you hit 5th level,you can claim a +1 weapon, +1 shield, +1 wand of the war mage, or +1 rod of the pact keeper, as part of your background/ backstory.

Kinda wish Jarprax had proficiency in Arcana, as a scroll would be more useful at the moment.

I think I'll look into making Antitoxin, and perhaps will pick up a few generic items before Monday.

You could always change your skill proficiencies, which is allowed before level 5 between sessions.

I don't think that I want to change my background, and Cleric's don't have Arcana as an option. I'm okay with it, actually - I was just musing aloud. I mean, can you imagine Jarprax reading from a scroll when he had the option to charge in and smash something?

Not having the option to choose any of the skills is just one of the things I found weirdly restrictive when I started playing 5e - though I'm sure the streamlining has contributed to its current popularity.

You can mix and match stuff from the backgrounds. Just because you took hermit doesn't mean you have to take medicine and religion. When doing a background you:

Choose ANY two skills.

Choose ANY two tools or ANY two languages or 1 tool and 1 language.

Choose ANY background feature.

Choose ANY background equipment.

Slap all that together and its your custom background.


I'm going to totally redo Blacklock, except class. The more I plan ahead the less I care about assassin abilities. Going back to my beloved thief. His personality/attitude I'll try to keep mostly the same so its not awkward.
