Updated character. Took wand of magic missles and learned scorching ray and web.
Looks kind of expensive to scribe scrolls, even more so to buy them to add to spellbook, so I'll hold off for now.
I'm still learning the rules so can someone confirm/clarify the following for me? As a 3rd level wizard with +3 int, I can prepare 6 spells of any combination of 1st and 2nd level. If I prepare Magic Missle, can I cast it as a 1st or 2nd level spell and decide which level at the time I cast it? Also, with 4 1st and 2 2nd level spell slots, if I want can I cast Magic Missle for all of them?
Jarprax |
That sounds right to me. An, yeah - the whole "prepared spells / spell slots" is pretty confusing (they were the same thing in the old editions). I mean, just turn it into mana points and be done with it.
Blacklock |
As a 3rd level wizard with +3 int, I can prepare 6 spells of any combination of 1st and 2nd level.
Yes. Wizard level + int mod preps. Spell level doesn't matter for these, its just straight up 6 spells of any level.
If I prepare Magic Missile, can I cast it as a 1st or 2nd level spell and decide which level at the time I cast it?
Yes. It just burns one of the respective slots.
Also, with 4 1st and 2 2nd level spell slots, if I want can I cast Magic Missle for all of them?
Yes. You could cast it 4 times at 1st and twice at 2nd.
For wizards, Arcane Recovery is maybe what's unintuitive and leads to complex thinking about levels etc. As a 3rd level wizard, you can recover 2 levels worth of slots. So you could get 2 1st slots back, or 1 2nd slot.
Jiro the Unwilling |
Sorry for being absent, I've been feeling cruddy lately. But I'm working on getting caught up today! Sorry again for that!
Aeshuura |
No worries, just wanted to be sure that you would be joining us, since we were headed into a new module! Good to have ya!
Jarprax |
Hey gang, I'm going to be away until Friday. Wifi/mobile service will likely be spotty at best, so please 'bot as needed.
Jiro the Unwilling |
My apologies, this is finals week for my evening classes, so I have a huge stack of grading I'm trying to finish up, AND at my day job there's a big demo on Friday. So I've been a bit swamped, and will try to stay caught up this week, but if not, go ahead and bot Jiro. I will have FAR more time starting Saturday.
(If we do get to a place to Short Rest, Jiro will ramble on with some entertaining nonsense and grant an additional 1d6 healing to anyone who spends Hit Dice. Also, hopefully we are through the worst of it, but if anything bad does pop up, Jiro can still Bane and/or Sleep 3 more times - plus other spells - but those are good go-to's.)
Antonio Carvartee |
So as for a re-work on the character, What can be changed? I was thinking of just removing the fighter and fighter traits and replacing it with the paladin's I think it would be the same skills, and hit points.
Can I change his attribute scores to raise his Charisma and may be lower his Wisdom score a little.
Saves would change as well.
And I guess I should have asked before all his can I change him in between adventures or do I need to wait until all of the adventures (I think you said there are three of them) are done?
Aeshuura |
Yes, everything can change except for his name, up until the first time you play him at 5th level. What oath are you thinking?
As long as it happens between modules, it is fine.
Aeshuura |
Good choice, but the least team boosting... my favorite is Oath of the Ancients, because of that 7th lvl aura!
Antonio Carvartee |
I always stopped at Channel Divinity. Since it's a use then rest item.
But I guess I do need to look at it for the long run, not just for the next few levels. With that in mind I am now re-looking at Oath of the Ancients and Oath of Devotion.
With Oath of the Ancients, just not sure how to play a hippie paladin. ;o)
Aeshuura |
Fighter/Paladin is a viable option too. Having two Fighting Styles and the ability to Second Wind and Action Surge really helps, if you are only looking at Paladin short run...
Zar Orbmark |
We kind of skipped over what we were doing after we retrieved the disk. Did we take a short rest? I offered to cast a ritual of "Comprehend Languages" but no one responded. If we took a short rest, I would have liked to use Arcane Recovery to get a 2nd level spell slot back since I'm out. Obviously, it's Aeshuura's call to retcon that given our current situation.
Aeshuura |
It seemed like everyone was heading off (though, it was only 2 of you), so I figured that meant that you did not want to take a break. Without knowing what you know now, what do you think your characters would have done?
--
I am okay with letting you take that short rest, but I would like you all to think about what your characters would have done...
Zar Orbmark |
I think he would have felt vulnerable not having access to his most powerful spells and would have wanted to regain one since it's a relatively simple process. However, if others were in a hurry to leave, he may not have spoken up.
We can leave it to the dice to see if he was smart enough or wise enough to take a rest:
Int: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Wis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Seems he would have pointed out to the others that the quest was not over yet and he needed to recover a spell.
Antonio Carvartee |
Sorry I did not catch the Comprehend Languages spell.
After hearing about the ability to understand what has been burned on his arm. Antonio asks if they can do it in the throne room or out side of the cave, just in case if the magic that is in the water goes away and they are trapped on the other side of the lava pools with no way to get across or be able to walk through the wall to get out.
Jarprax |
Sorry if I bulldozed my way through that. Jarprax definitely would have wanted to just get out of the mines. He's pretty easy-going, though, so he could easily have been convinced to rest if the others wanted/needed it.
Aeshuura |
Okay, take the short rest, but Zar and anyone with a 11 or higher Passive Insight notes that Shal and Jarprax are on edge.
Zar, upon ritually casting comprehend languages you find that it reads, Worthy

Alrighty! Congratulations on finishing another module!
Okay, we have a couple of things:
1) Rewards:
CCC-WWC-03: Tyrant of the Forgotten Forge
Date: 12/12/2019
DM: Noel Mock (DCI #6203763429)
Gain a level (bear in mind that if you go beyond 4th, you cannot continue with this series. You can forego the level, but keep treasure gained up to a max of 80 gp per level, so 320 gp plus starting gold for a 4th level character.)
GP gained: 80 gp (the hoard of the Mad King brought you to max for this level)
Magic Item found: bag of holding (remember your item max is 1 right now, so if you want to keep the wand of magic missiles you cannot take the bag of holding, and vice versa.)
2) Continue? So, we can continue if all of you are having fun! The holiday season is upon us, so I will be a little more lenient in terms of posting rates at this time, but unless we take a little break over the holidays, I will still hope that everyone can still post every couple of days.
So chime in here and let me know what you all think. There are two more modules in the series, but we can reduce that to the final one, if there is no interest in doing the underwater module. I will give a few days (maybe until Monday) to discuss before we make a decision.

Thank you all for playing! I love these characters and hope to be able to continue being your DM!
Jarprax |
Thanks so much, Aeshuura!
I'm having fun playing Jarprax and would like to continue. I'd prefer to do the underwater module next (I mean, Jarprax will hate it, but that's his problem!)
I'm not planning anything big for the holidays, but I don't mind taking a break if others are going to be unable to play over the next few weeks.
Tana Kulenova |
It is a busy time of the year, however, thank you for the Adventure!!! This has been fun!
Yes, posting will be easier after the holiday season and yes, I would like Tana to continue. As I understand stand it, she will be level 3.
Does anyone want the bag of holding? If no one is interested may Tana keep it? If someone else wants it, Tana will acquire a different one in the future.
To Everyone Happy Hanukah Meryy Christmas Happy Kwanzaa and Happy New Year!!! What ever you celebrate Peace, Love and Happiness is my wish for you!!!
Jarprax |
@Tana: The way it works in Adventure League is that everyone has access to the Bag of Holding - so if you want it, take it. But it won't preclude anyone else from also taking it.
Aeshuura |
Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Antonio, you get this Story Award:
Worthy Sacrifice. You willingly sacrificed yourself to achieve your goal and protect your companions. Malana Homwell has learned of your deed and is impressed by your actions.
This may come into play later in this arc!
Aeshuura |
Actually, this will work well. Antonio, you may spend 5 Downtime days to gain the Inspired by Torm story award:
Inspired by Torm. The teachings of Torm have shown you a better way to live your life. While you may not worship the deity directly, you have come to appreciate Torm’s commitment to duty, loyalty, and courage, and you do your best to incorporate these qualities into you own life. While this story award may have benefits in future adventures involving the Tenets of Bane, it is intended primarily for roleplaying purposes.
This story award is the one that will come in to play later. It also will help to explain the shift to Paladin...
Also, I forgot to tell you all that if you take the level, you gain 10 Downtime days. (Shaldinari, I think you are the only one that might make it to 5th level, if you do not bypass the level gain, in which case you gain 20 Downtime.)
Aeshuura |
The max climbs as you get to higher tiers. You should be able to afford a suit by upper tier 2 or early tier 3, if you don't find the magic stuff first!
Blacklock |
I'm enjoying this line of modules, and the season 9 changes. I don't mind taking a break, but would vote to continue if everyone is down.
I like this incarnation of Blacklock as frail but skilled, likely no big mechanical changes...in fact will go and level now. :)
Note: we could cause some serious destruction now. We each have bags of holding...each pair will rip open a random gate to the Astral Plane. XD
Zar Orbmark |
Thanks for continuing running these. I'm having fun. I'm fine with continuing with the expectation that the game might be a bit slower through the holidays. I'm definitely keeping my wand. It may be a few days before I can level up. I'll have to take a look at what I need to do for 4th lvl.
Aeshuura |
Okay, we at least have a table. I will prep for the next module and will get something up by Monday!
Tana Kulenova |
Aeshuura, I'm looking forward to what Monday brings! Shaldinari, I'm glad you're still with us, I love your character's humor and dialogue! And of course I look forward to joining EVERYONE for the next Adventurer!!! Enjoy your weekend everyone!!!

Shal's post got me thinking of the underwater rules. Not sure how much our characters would know, but...
-Everyone has fire resistance
-(melee) only dagger, spear, trident, shortsword, javelin do not have disadvantage
-(ranged) all attacks auto fail beyond first range increment, otherwise only xbow, net, spear, trident, dart do not have disadvantage
Think I will buy a net since when does one ever do that. And fishing tackle.
Aeshuura |
Depends, but the ship's mate would go over the basics with you all, so let's say that you all know these before you go down.
Jarprax |
One thing I forgot to ask - does Water Breathing allow us to cast spells that require a verbal component, or is it just the ability to breathe?
