    Start of Round 9

Once again, its wounds seem to close up somewhat.

The linnorm drops Caduceus from its grip and lets loose with another horrific blast of magma shooting from its mouth.

Fire dmg: 15d8 ⇒ (7, 2, 5, 4, 3, 3, 8, 8, 7, 7, 2, 5, 3, 7, 2) = 73 Ref DC ? for half, so after Caduceus' fire resistance is applied either 63 dmg or 26 dmg. In either case, Caduceus is still conscious after the breath weapon, but if he fails the save vs the breath weapon he'll take another 10 from life link at the start of his turn, which will drop him into negative territory.

    GM screen:

Breath weapon available again: 1d4 ⇒ 4 Can use breath weapon again on Round 13

Pathfinders are up but I suggest holding off on posting your actions until we see what happens with Caduceus' save vs the breath weapon. I'll update the tracker with the life link results after resolving the breath weapon save.

    Reflex vs : 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Unable to dodge away, the paladin feels the burning breath rain down upon him.

All is not lost. Life Link may be ended as an Immediate Action. Also, Hero's Defiance has a casting time of Immediate if I would be brought to 0 hp. I think I will maintain the Life Link and rely on the spell to keep me up, as I have plenty of LoH left. This will allow me to attack and get off a LoH as a move action (so I can survive the lingering magma that will hit again (or echo or aftershock or whatever it is).

    Hero's Defiance: 4d6 + 2 + 1d6 + 15 ⇒ (6, 2, 3, 2) + 2 + (3) + 15 = 33

Feeling a divine surge of restorative energy, Caduceus miraculously remains on his feet. Panting heavily, "I continue to defy you monster! And by The Inheritor's hand, I will persevere. I will avenge the fallen Flame. I shall strike you down!"

    Longsword {SMITE / grappled}: 1d20 + 21 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 21 - 2 = 33

If I take enough damage to drop below 0 hp, my Aegis of Recovery would kick in.

    AoO?:

It is possible that it is getting close to death and may try to escape. This may also just be some wishful thinking on my part. Just in case it's movement provokes...

A moment later, however, as his own mystical link with his comrades begins to sap the last of his life force, Caduceus defiantly summons the strength of a hero to fight on! Life link heals Tytus and Anen 5 each, and does 10 dmg to Caduceus, which would drop him, but Hero's Defiance keeps him conscious.

Then the servant of Iomedae strikes out. Only one of his blows hits, but it is enough to drop the wounded linnorm, who collapses with a thud!

If only I could be as versatile." Heccan glances toward Caduceus then back down at the lifeless body of Hector. "Though, and I certainly curse myself for even thinking about such things at a time like this, and admittedly my knowledge of these creatures is somewhat, very well extremely limited, I do think I recalled actual scholars say that these overgrown salamanders like to hoard things, namely treasure." The Chelaxian gets a gleam in his eye "I think we owe it to the Flame of Liberty to ensure this foul beasts riches are recovered, and of course dispersed to the needy." Heccan offers the group a sheepish grin. "Oh, are we now kings of some sort? After Tytus hits the unmoving monster with his bottle of lightning and it does not respond, the pathfinders seem to breath easier, believing themselves out of danger.

    Round 10

    Prayer has now expired.

Caduceus takes only minor damage from the magma residue (Successful Reflex save means 15 fire dmg, reduced to 5 by fire resistance, leaving Caduceus at 85 dmg total) and the paladin pours some holy water on the beast for good measure, in hopes of arresting any regenerative power it may have. (Caduceus, your life link also triggers at this point, healing Tytus another 5 and bringing you to 90 dmg. You've used your move and standard (retrieve and use holy water) but could use your swift for Lay on Hands. Let me know if you wanted to do that.

Anen and Heccan both begin to make plans for the future, including not only the restoration of brave Hector to life, but also the fame and riches that may accrue to Linnorm Kings such as themselves. Anen even activates Heightened Awareness and flies up in the air to begin looking for the dragon's treasure.

If Tytus has any thoughts about the situation, he keeps them to himself.

    Start of Round 11

Unfortunately, the pathfinders' presumption of safety is, indeed, premature. With a roar of pain and anger, the wounded crag linnorm awakens and strikes out at its nearest tormentor, Caduceus! Although it is prone and attacking less powerfully than normal, it is still a dragon!

Caduceus, decide about whether or not you wanted to use Lay on Hands before opening the spoiler.

    Linnorm attacks on Caduceus:

    Bite, prone, no PA: 1d20 ⇒ 14
    Bite dmg: 2d8 + 12 ⇒ (2, 6) + 12 = 20 Caduceus, Fort save vs poison needed
I'll wait to resolve the rest of its attacks after seeing the result of the Fort save and whether or not Caduceus is still up.

I think we are all a bit surprised as every other time there was a mention of 'wounds closing'. I think we believed due to a lack of that description we proceeded as if it was down after the lightning. We (at least I) would have begun to attempt a beheading/coup d'grace or somesuch. It's not a big deal, it's only the next round and it would not have changed anything I did. Not certain about other players though. There was just a sense of relief that this fight was finally over.

I suggest you wait on rolling Caduceus' save vs the poison until after your comrades have acted. If one of them can hopefully get some healing to you, it could get you awake to do more LoH and/or channel. Also, fyi, the linnorm is only barely standing, so if someone can hit it, it shouldn't be hard to knock it unconscious again, at least long enough to get Caduceus awake.

Pausing before adjudicating Anen's and Tytus's actions to be sure that this is what they really want to do. The linnorm is down but probably still regenerating (as far as you know) but based on the amount of damage it just took, you think you probably have at least a round before it wakes up. As stated upthread, if you review your knowledge check from the start of the fight, you may find a hint about what will help turn off the regeneration. Perhaps more importantly, if neither of you does something to help him this turn, Caduceus will likely die. (He's at -2 hp, which will become -7 from life link with Tytus, and he's poisoned; unless he makes his Fort save vs the poison he'll take another 2d6 dmg and another 1d4 Con drain).

Heccan wipes his brow and eyes the scene. "I fear this thing will be the death of us if we do not act swiftly." Seeing Caduceus bleeding, Heccan draws a wand. "I am reluctant to use this, but I fear we have no choice. He draws on the wands dark power and taps Caduceus. [b]"We have lost enough today."

Heccan uses a charge of his Infernal Healing wand on Caduceus, granting him fast healing 1 for 1 minute. As for the re-rolls, something got screwy there. I failed first one outright, used GM re-roll and whiffed again, then used my own re-roll and hit it. When I went to post, it went all wonky for some reason.

    Emerald Spire slides |

Just to clarify, Heccan has already used his actions in the current round knocking the linnorm out, and it's in this same round that Caduceus will likely die if he doesn't receive healing (or gets very lucky on his save vs the poison), so the only ones who can possibly do something about that are Anen and Tytus, both of whom have already posted other actions. I was basically asking them to confirm those choices since it's not clear to me whether or not they recognized the situation - it's easy for some details to get lost amidst many posts in PbP - so this is the equivalent of - in FTF gaming - me saying "are you sure? your friend looks pretty beat up over there..."

If neither of them has posted again by tomorrow morning I'll just move us along.

As for the wonkiness with the rerolls, no worries, just glad that it worked out for you eventually.

I can't heal him. I am nowhere near Cad and can't heal without a wand, which I don't have in hand. I have no boons or anything that would let me cast any healing magic. I've expended my arcane bond ability so even casting a reach infernal healing is out of the question as I do not have one prepared. I would have assumed that after combat Cad would have started expending resources to heal himself with however many rounds we had before the Linnorm was back into the positives, but I think we were mostly planning out what to do in the future since it seemed like the linnorm was no longer regenerating.

@Anen, fyi it has been clarified in a faq that drawing a wand is liking drawing a weapon: you can do it as part of a move action to move if you have a bab of at least +1. So you could draw a wand while flying over to Caduceus to heal him; however, it doesn't look like you have UMD so I don't think you could use a wand of cure light?

Also, I realized that Caduceus position would have to shift when the magma hardened into another wall. I've taken the liberty of shifting him slightly, so he's not in the wall.

And yes, Caduceus' summary is correct - we've never left initiative and during the 1 round (round 10) that the dragon was down, Caduceus used his actions to heal himself (swift), retrieve holy water, and pour holy water on the creature. Heccan used his actions to move over to Hector. Anen used his actions to cast Heightened Awareness on himself and fly up to look around. Tytus did not use any actions during round 10 (Tytus, are you here and reading these posts?). I realize that this may be a bit confusing since, after the creature went down, I didn't explicitly say "ok, we are still in initiative" because doing so would have invited exactly the kind of metagaming that makes an ability like regeneration kind of pointless, but I was also very careful to not say anything to indicate that the battle was over. This is one of those ways that PbP can suffer compared to FtF play - if we were all sitting around the table together I would just have waited a few moments to see if anyone did anything and then I would have stood the dragon back up. But in PbP that's harder to capture that same dynamic.

In any case, I'm handling childcare for the next few hours - I'll move us along later tonight.

  • I'm adjudicating Anen and Tytus' moves before Caduceus - although he posted before them, he actually comes after them in the initiative order and this is one of those times when it makes a difference.

Anen moves to the fallen paladin and applies the foul touch of devilish healing to him. What Iomedae thinks of this is unknown to mortals such as ourselves. Fast healing will apply on Caduceus' turn

Tytus moves forward (I've moved your icon on the map) and uses his wand of cure light wounds to apply more conventional healing to Caduceus. The paladin's eyes flutter open. Barely. Caduceus, I've healed you 10 from this (8 + 2 from Fey Foundling; I think Inheritor's Light won't apply since you've dropped your weapon); does that seem correct?

By my tally Caduceus is now at +2 hp, but at the start of his turn he'll take 5 dmg from his life link with Tytus, which will knock him unconscious again. He could end the life link as an immediate action, which would leave him conscious and able to act. Caduceus, do you want to do that? If not, you'll be unconscious again. Note that if you do this, you won't have your swift action available. Regardless, you've passed your second consecutive save vs the poison and are no longer poisoned.

Eyes flutter open. He skin crawls with innate 'wrongness', but for the moment he cannot figure out why. Thinking it may spread, he severs the link between himself and the party.

I cannot corrupt the others! There is enough evil afoot.

Inspired by earlier words, the paladin pulls a worn blade from his pack. Though not magical, it seems to be well made. In fact, other than the craftsmanship, the blade appears to be perfectly mundane. Except for the very metal it was made from. Caduceus grabs the pommel and flicks away the scabbard and drives the blade into the linnorm's prone form.
