"Huzzah!" Kahwen shouts, both in victory and relief as the smoky eyed undead finally returns to its rest. He brandishes his sword over his head for a moment but then quickly drops it back down, obviously feeling weak.

As the healer appears, he nods his beaked head. "Indeed, Companion. I fear this creature took a bit of my life force. If you can Restore it, I would appreciate it."[/b]

Looks like Restore is the lowest level spell that will get rid of a negative level. I assume it was temporary? If so, I'll shell out the 380 (4x7x10 + 100). If anyone knows a lower level spell that will get rid of the negative level, let me know.

Though he tries to hide it by turning away, it is obvious that Kahwen is deeply touched by the generosity of his fellow Pathfinders. He scrubs at his eyes with the back of his wrist, but they are clearly glassy and glistening and when he talks, he has to cough a couple times to clear a lump from his throat.

"I was just feeling a little weak, Companions. I'm feeling much better, now," he says, looking Kimiya in the eyes though he staggers under the impact of N'Aranav's friendly blow.

His eyes widen at Quillen and Dale's discussion. He coughs a couple more times, this time into his hands then looks at them as though he might be able to see any germs there.

"Do you think I might be sick? I thought you only got Evian flu from bad water."

He bows to his group as well as the healer before he can leave. "Thank you all, Pathfinders," he says the last word as though it were the highest honorific he could give.

**OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT** (1 of 2)

Aram Zey speaks out through the tapestry. “The soul stitching is slowing down! The undead are under control. But the tapestry remains in danger. Fight on!”

GMs, the Undead Contained condition on page 29 is in effect.

**OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT** (2 of 2)

Suddenly, it becomes clear that the astral invaders’ retreat is merely a ploy. More invaders pour through the rifts to reinforce their companions. Their reckless assault tears the holes wider, and the entire demiplane begins to shift and fold. Locations fade and vanish, reappearing miles away, now separated by a wide expanse of barren, rocky wasteland. The invaders continue to pour through, and the tapestry’s exhausted repair mechanisms cease to function altogether. The triumphant attackers converge on the Pathfinders scattered across the wasteland.

Then, the sky turns red.

A primal screech pierces the tapestry, and a colossal ruby-flamed phoenix appears in the sky, its wings nearly blocking the sun. It swoops across the sky at tremendous speed, its tattered feathers leaving a trail of smoke. With another screech, it flaps its massive wings, and countless fiery feathers shoot towards the invaders. As the feathers strike, they explode, incinerating much of the invading force. Then the phoenix turns its attention to the other outsiders—the mass of Pathfinders—and beats its wings once more. A barrage of feathers strikes the wasteland, and from each resulting inferno emerges a bird of pure ruby-red flames.

Aram Zey’s voice echoes. “Can you hear me, Pathfinders? The tapestry is in its death throes! You are cut off—I cannot help you escape. Destroy the phoenixes—perhaps their magic can repair the tapestry!”

Table GMs, the Tapestry’s Last Defense condition on page 29 is in effect.

Then, at Aram Zey's warning, you take stock of the situation and get ready to make your final stand.
(You have 2 rounds worth of actions to prepare.)

As a last-gasp defense woven into the tapestry by Hao Jin herself, a massive concentration of magical energy manifests as a colossal bird made of ruby flames, and it soars through the air, smoke trailing in its wake.

The ruby-flamed phoenix is determined to fend off any creature that is not native to the tapestry. It bombards all such creatures with a storm of fiery feathers that then transform into Ruby Phoenix Guardians of various sizes.

"Recover the powerful feathers!" Aram Zey calls out. "They can be used in the immediate repair of the tapestry!"

All around, flaming feathers barrage the tapestry. The scattered demiplane natives are unharmed by the inferno, as is the landscape itself. Screeches echo across the ruby-tinted landscape, and the tattered birds of ruby fire close in.

Knowledge (planes) DC18:
This is greater ruby phoenix guardian, a huge variant of greater fire elemental. For every 5 you exceed the DC, you may ask one question from this list.
These Ruby Phoenix Guardians—and the Colossal creature that spawned them—are not true phoenixes, but manifestations of Hao Jin’s magic. They understand various languages, but they do not stop to negotiate. Built to be lawful guardians, they despise chaos. Unlike a true phoenix, a Ruby Phoenix Guardian does not resurrect when slain. Instead, it self-immolates, leaving behind a single tattered ruby feather Several of the Ruby Phoenix Guardians have an ability to banish someone from the tapestry.

Abilities that allow you to drink potions more quickly or without provoking attacks of opportunity affect this boon, though abilities that alter the effects of a consumed potion (such as the extend potion alchemist discovery or the alchemical allocation spell) do not.

Dale the Sage recognizes the ruby phoenix guardian and warns the team about its elemental traits and its special attacks, including its banishing strike and the burn inflicted by its slams. The creature doesn't have special defenses per se, but it likely possesses one or more resistances.

Banishing Strike (Su):
Three times per day, when the Ruby Phoenix Guardian hits a target with its slam attack, it can attempt to eject that target from the Hao Jin Tapestry. This functions as banishment (DC15 Will negates). A creature who succeeds at a saving throw against this ability is immune for 24 hours. The save DC is Wisdom-based.

He passes along his cautionary notes, punctuating them with a double-shot of alchemical extracts, and ascends into the air.

The wizard draws another scroll and casts a spell that enables Kimiya, N'Aranav, and Quillen to resist the guardian's burn. Finally, he casts a similar spell to protect himself and draws his blade.

Nodding at Aroden's wise precautions, Kahwen downs a potion of fire resistance of his own and a potion of cat's grace.

One of the junior Pathfinder teams has already defeated a ruby phoenix guardian. A member of the team presents you with an empowered feather formed from the magic of the legendary sorceress Hao Jin.

You can perform one of the following three actions when you receive this feather.
Repair: Succeed at a Hard Craft (cloth), Heal, Knowledge (arcana or planes), Spellcraft, or Use Magic Device check. If this feather has been empowered, the DC decreases to Average.
Resurrect: Cast resurrection on a single member of the party. If this feather has been empowered, you can instead resurrect the entire party. Using the feather for resurrection consumes all of its magic, meaning it can no longer be used to repair the tapestry.
Empower: To empower a feather, a PC can expend one use of a healing ability (such as channel energy) or an ability that does fire damage, or cast one spell with the healing or fire descriptor with a sufficient spell level (2nd level for Subtier 5–6).

Quillen considers quaffing his potion of flight, but first opts for a dazzling display of his rapier wielding prowess, flipping it up into the air and catching it while he shouts angrily.

"YOU! BIRD! WILL DIE!"

Intimidate vs DC10+Wis mod+HD: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 13 + 2 = 31

Quillen gets +2 rounds of duration. If he exceeds the DC by 5 or more (creature HD + wis mod <= 16), the target is frightened due to his Thug archetype.

Quillen scares himself a bit in the process, but hopes that his display gives the group a chance to gather itself and deal with Kimiya's burns.

Thanks to his arcane defenses, Aroden weathers the worst of the fireball's flames. He raises his sword, inspiring the team.

The spell from Aroden's scroll provides Kimiya, Quillen, and N'Aranav with some protection, too, from the fiery explosion. Both of them get ready to attack the ruby phoenix, if it gets within their reach.

With a rogue's evasiveness, Kahwen avoids the flames entirely and looses a enchanted arrow at the huge creature. His aim is true, but the arrow glances off the phoenix's fiery plumage.

Quillen the pint-sized thug flips and tosses his rapier like a terrifying sous chef. Like an elephant that's seen a mouse, the ruby phoenix recoils in fear, trumpeting a scream.

The ruby phoenix guardian begins flying away, too frightened by Quillen's dazzling display to attack.

Dale's nerves calm a bit as Quillen rattles the songbird's cage, sending it into full retreat. "And don't you forget it! That was Quillen the halfling, not Dale the Sage!" He coughs and looks sheepishly towards Quillen before drawing his magic missile wand and attempting to shoot the fleeing bird.

Curse of the Crimson Throne

As the frightened ruby phoenix guardian flies away in fear, the party realizes it has a window of opportunity to try to repair the tapestry.

You have the empowered ruby phoenix feather that one of the Pathfinder teams had given you. During the few moments available before the huge creature returns, you can attempt to use your skills.

Using the soul stitches they recovered after defeating the bodak, Dale and Aroden have an advantage.

Craft (cloth), Heal, Knowledge (arcana or planes), Spellcraft, or Use Magic Device check.
Dale and Aroden can expend their soul stitch before rolling in order to roll twice and take the higher result.

Oh, ya I'd much rather do that vs instigate the overgrown turkey!

Dale holds fire for the moment and instead does what he can to repair the Tapestry. "Keep a close eye on that thing, I don't want it roasting me... those fireballs have a very long range!"

He gets to work, going about things on the planar level, as he expects his teammate to likely attack the arcane theory end of things.

Curse of the Crimson Throne

Using the soul stitch he recovered earlier, Dale the Sage sets to work with the empowered ruby feather.

It's not exactly clear what he's done or how he did it, but the magical power contained within the feather consumes it, and it crumbles to ashes.

Then the ashes ignite into majestic ruby flames, which swirl through the air toward the colossal ruby phoenix in the sky that spawned the guardians.

One success reported to the Overseer GM.

Is there any benefit to a UMD to repair the tapestry, or are we good on those checks? Assuming we don't need any more of those, Quillen will try to UMD his wand and then quaff his potion of flying.

Dale, Kimiya, and Quillen patch themselves up and get ready for the return of the ruby phoenix guardian.

The team realizes that to help further repair the tapestry, you'll need to obtain another feather from a phoenix, either one given to you by another team or by harvesting one of your own from a guardian.

Just waiting for Aroden, Kahwen, and N'Aranav to post...

There were two scrolls of Fly and 3 potions of Cure Moderate Wounds from the half-orc and elves.

Dale had claimed one of the scrolls of Fly. Kahwen had asked for the other to be used on him.

The duergar had another CMW, Invisibility, 4 CLW, and some others. Kahwen and Kimiya used 2 of the CLW.

Both Dale and Quillen had received potions of Invisibility earlier, I don't think either has used it.

Think I have all this right.

1) Aroden uses the unclaimed scroll of Fly on Kahwen. "Take this potion of Invisibility also. Maybe you can get up close and steal a feather from the phoenix. I don't know if invisibility will work against it or not."

2) Aroden drinks one of the potions of CMW. CMW: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (4, 4) + 3 = 11

3) Aroden resumes Inspiring Sword.

If Kahwen was giddy when he had Haste cast on him, he is absolutely euphoric now that he can fly. He flaps his arms a couple times experimentally but soon finds he can maneuver just by concentrating. And he seems surprisingly skilled at the task.

Thank you, Friend Aroden! I'll bring back all his feathers!"

It doesn't take much for him to think happy thoughts and he starts to sing a song. "I can fly, I can fly, I can fly, I can fly, I can flyyyy!"

With a big grin, he stows his bow and draws his sword, then gets some distance from the group, rising up to a level equal with the phoenix (20').

Dale gave his gifted invisibility potion to the dragonkin as a bribe, but he still has the scroll of fly. If that little bugger stays aloft then he'll do his best to use it on a melee asap. His bombs are pretty dang potent vs it though it seems.

GM: Can you give us an updated combat post with adjusted HP totals? Don't forget group: We still have that free 3d6 aoe heal when we get blasted by another area effect, or are in imminent peril. 3d6 equates to 10.5 average healing.

"Oh, best be ready friends, I think its on its way back!" Dale shouts as he finishes sewing up the tapestry with the magic feather.
