Matheus and Petronia:

You both notice shapes moving in a copse of trees just past the edge of town. They appear to be watching you.

Kazmir and Petronia start poking around the ruins, looking for clues. The ruins of the home are cold, and parts are covered with snow and icicles - clearly this was burned at least a week ago. There are tracks all over, of varying ages. There is almost nothing left of Skagni's personal effects - it looks as though the house has been pretty well pilfered through. Some of the tracks go to local homes, but most are old enough not to be much help.

"We have an audience," Matheus murmured, just loud enough for the others to hear, he hoped, all the while keeping an eye on the figures he had spotted from the corner of his eye, rather than staring right at them to let them know they had been spotted. "No, don't look up. Too far away to catch before they can make a run for it, I think, if we were of a mind to make the attempt. So, assuming they were set there to spot anyone who came calling, they have now done so and we have been marked... and we'll find it difficult to mingle in with the locals."

Of course, it could be some of Skagni's folks who were watching them, since they had known to expect company, but it was impossible to tell, and it was just as likely they were watching to see if Skagni had people who worried after him... and thus needed to become their next targets.

"If you are done with the ruins, how about we go find that inn now? Too late to keep a low profile, but if there are no answers to be found here, we should look elsewhere."

Kazmir peers at the tracks, "Nothing, these are all cold. I would guess the neighbors came after it was all over, either to help or loot, depending on how popular Skagni was."

When Matheus says they are being watched, the dwarf grunts, "Why are we being so secretive? They painted for us to keep out, we are hardly going to blend in. Either they are our foes and have already marked us, or are allies too scared to greet us. Either way.."

Kazmir turns toward the supposed figure (the dwarf can't see it) and bellows, "WHO GOES THERE?"

For a moment there is silence as Kazmir's challenge dies into echoes. Then four throwing axes come hurtling from the trees. Three spin harmlessly past their targets, but one connects with Kazmir, dealing him a glancing blow across the shoulder.

Immediately after, five Ulfen thugs charge from thickets. Four carry battleaxes and shields, and are wearing armour of various sorts. The fifth lags just a bit behind and carries a longspear. All sport Ulfen clothes, and are shouting indecipherable war cries.

A move action will take you to melee range this turn. I'll get a map up soon.

”En dvärg hoppar djärvt in, där dårar rädsla för att trampa,” Matheus cursed as Kazmir not only decided not to follow his lead but did the exact opposite. Well, at least the dwarf’s direct approach made it quite apparent what the hidden watchers wanted from them, answering the challenge with instant violence.

Skald:
”A dwarf boldly jumps in, where fools fear to tread.”

As the dwarf charged at the Ulfen warriors with his huge hammer at the ready, the druid began chanting an invocation of summons, calling for the northern wilderness to aid its champion in the battle.

Lack of map makes using AoEs difficult, so let's go with summons... burning CMW to cast SNA3, going for 1d3 wolves with the usual feats. The summons appear next round, going for either flanking positions or possibly body-blocking enemies that get too close to Matheus… depends on the situation at that moment. Will also take a 5’ step towards some sort of cover, if available…

Kazmir and Petronia rush to the attackers, each landing solid blows on their opponents. Ner scrambles over the crumbled remains of Skagni's wall, and finds a perfect place to hide, but low enough that he could stand and fire from. Matheus begins calling animals to their aid.

The Ulfen warriors work well as a team. The move fluidly through the Pathfinders, looking to flank where possible. One of the men was so eager to get behind Petronia, that he ran too close in behind in Kazmir, provoking the dwarf to take a swing at him. Kazmir, make an AoO against T1

Two wield their battle axes against Petronia, trying to coordinate to keep her off balance. However, the brawler ducks and weaves as if she was born fighting outside in sub-zero temperatures. Likewise, another pair harries Kazmir, but the dwarf's small stature throw the tall Ulfen's off their game, and they fail to connect. Even the one with the longspear, who was harrying Kazmir without getting in earthbreaker distance, couldn't connect. He bellows in Ulfen to his comrades, urging them on. "Döda sökvägarna! All righty then… let's drop one wolf just west of T5 (I assume that's the spear user) to force him to move if he wants to keep using his reach weapon safely, and the other SE of T2 to flank wit Kazmir. Matheus takes a move towards the ruins to get out of immediate melee range and let's Storm Burst someone… might as well be T5.

His chant completed, the druid drew wo cards from the Deck, considered both briefly. "The Tangled Briar, history reaching forth to affect the present… fitting, for an old companion to humans, the beasts with whom our ancestors once ran on endless plains, if the Ulfen shamans' legends hold true. And the Forge. Strength through diversity. From the many. What would suit a pack the better? Off you go now," the druid murmured, finishing his invocation with a flourish. In the next instant, two grey-maned beasts blinked into existence, teeth bared and growling as they rushed at their summoner's enemies. One caught the warrior closest to Matheus, teeth clamping around the Ulfen man's lower leg. The man had been focusing his attention on the mighty dwarf and was caught by surprise, and the wolf made the most of the advantage by trying to pull the man down on his knees.

The other beast manifested behind the spear-wielding leader, and while its teeth were defeated by the man's armor, its close position would make it difficult to use the long weapon against it. And to make matters worse for him, while Matheus retreated from the melee he called for his domain, summoning a brief thunderhead around the Ulfen, blinding his eyes with wind-driven rain.

Petronia's mighty punch coincides with Ner's arrow, making it look like the first resulted in the second. As blood spurted from the warriors mouth, he sank to the ground, staining the snow around him a vivid red.

Both wolves harried their intended victims, but failed to bring them down. However, the sudden storm that apparated around the leader confounded him, getting in his eyes and fouling his retaliation against the wolf.

The thugs continued their attack, but had little success. The only one to land a blow was the thug attacking Kazmir, despite the wolf biting at his heels. But it was a solid blow of the battleaxe, drawing blood from the dwarf's shoulderblade.

Instead he turned on the man, raised the hammer high and brought it down on the man's head with a force like a falling tree.

Do you mean T3? T4 was Petronia's opponent north of her - did she succeed in knocking him out?

Oops, yes, I meant Kazmir's thug

And now, as I understand, all the enemies are down... which means both the wolves go after the only enemy available, meaning they will chase after the spear-wielder... move 50, so they'll certainly catch him, unless he manages to elude them, and they do have Scent for tracking...

The three wolves chase after the running Ulfen, and soon they can hear growls and shouts from where they have him prone and surrounded in the woods. A minute or two later, and the Pathfinders find themselves with two captives - the leader and the unconscious man.

Kazmir slips out of the rage, bottling up the battle trance. As the feeling slowly fades, the pain in his should increases and he can see the blood freely running down his arm. The stony armor is coated in a thick layer of dwarf blood.

The dwarf pulls out a wand and says, "Can anyone use it? One of them cut me a bit."

As they gather around their captive he asks, "So, are you going to talk or do we have to start removing bits?" he hefts the still bloody hammer, "I'm no surgeon but I can get the job done."

Ner eyeballed the chest. He hasn't been keeping track since Kazmir yelled at the woods.
-
Then he turns out the unconscious ulfin's pockets. Any money he finds he hands over to Petronia like it was a common transaction. Anything interesting he kept to look over as soon as things were safe. Ordinary throwing axes and other sundry, he ignored.
-
Finally, he started dragging the bodies into the destroyed building and concealing them amongst the rubble - but he knew the smell would lead people to them soon enough.

The brawler cracks her knuckles and gives a feral smile, "There are plenty of ways to cause pain without the mess of removing body parts." She lets her gaze rest on the Ulfen's groin, "I much prefer shoving certain body parts back up into the body. From the sounds they've made in the past, it's very painful."

”Save it – I have power aplenty for healing,” Matheus said, moving over to inspect the dwarf’s wounds. ”I can take a closer look later, when we secure us some lodgings and you can get out of all that armor, but for the moment, this will have to suffice…” the druid began muttering in Skald, invoking the arctic wilds to mend Kazmir’s wounds. Power flowed from his hand to the dwarf’s flesh like a breath of icy cold air, numbing pain while forcing the flesh to heal.

CLW: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
CLW: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13 And another, with the help of one Pearl

And might as well throw a Mending to deal with damage to Kazmir’s armor… not that there are any game effects for being hit through armor, but...

It was hard to see the actual wounds past all the cloth and armor Kazmir wore, but Matheus was confident enough that the dwarf was more of less in good physical health after two invocations. So to finish things off, the druid waved one hand over the scars Ulfen axes had left on the stoneplate, coaxing the alchemically strengthened basalt to mend itself much like its wielder’s flesh had just done.

The druid gave Pertonia and Kazmir an uneasy look. Granted, he wasn’t an innocent hatchling who thought the world was a bright and happy place, but thought of torture didn’t sit well with him. Or rather, he didn’t mind the threat of torture – if that made actual violence unnecessary later, all the better. But he wasn’t quite certain how serious the two were. Pertonia, he at least had heard joke often enough during their long journey to believe she might be bluffing. But Kazmir seemed the epitome of a dwarf in that he said what he meant and meant what he said – thus, he Matheus wasn’t all that sure he wouldn’t start cutting off bits and pieces if the captives remained silent.

On the other hand, they did need answers, and these two could provide some. So the druid left the two warriors to deal with the captives and went to help Ner deal with the fallen enemies, all the while keeping his eyes open. There was no way the townspeople close by hadn’t heard the sounds of the battle. The way those people chose to react to the outsiders emerging as winners might be worth knowing.

Matheus doesn’t care for loot, but he is interested to see if the fallen have any interesting clan markings or such on their bodies… he’s certainly out of touch but he was raised in these parts, so he should be able to recognize symbolic tattoos or charms for what they are even if he doesn’t recognize the particular faction they represent… and he is certainly interested in how the townspeople react… do we get curious onlookers, or are the people trying hard not to see or hear anything?

The Ulfen pales visibly; between the snarling and snapping wolves, and the seemingly bloodthirsty woman and dwarf, it's clear that his future is precarious at best.

"Don't kill me! Don't chop off any parts, neither! Here, here! This is all I know!" The leader fumbles in a pouch for a moment, drawing out these two notes, which he thrusts towards Petronia. "Hjort, he hired us a few weeks ago, told us to watch the house. Kill any Pathfinders. You're Pathfinders, right?" Wiping his brow, he said, "That's all, just business, nothing personal."

Meanwhile, as Ner searched the bodies, he came up with 2 identical potion bottles, and about 1200gp in northern currency. Other than that, the only things on the bodies were the masterwork chain shirt and battleaxe, plus two throwing axes each.

Matheus looks carefully at the bodies, and finds no shortage of tattoos. After all, the Ulfen people have little enough to do in the winter other than decorate their skin. Various clan markings - winter wolf and wild boar, but nothing out of the ordinary.

You caught the leader in the woods - are you questioning him there, or did you drag him back to the house first? Also, what are you doing with the knocked out fellow?

Petronia takes the two notes which she glances at before handing them over to Matheus. Her eyes narrow and she bends down towards the terrified man, "And where can we find the Hjort?" she growls.

Does it really take 2 notes to tell them to kill any pathfinders? Anything else on the notes that she notices before passing them on?

If no one else tied up the unconscious guy then Petronia will do it. I was planning to yell at Ner to do it while she pursued the leader. And unless anyone had any objections, she would have dragged the leader back to the house first so that we're all together and in the presence of the chest.

Missed the notes the first time around so she would add...

"Or should we find Runa instead? I'm sure they'd both like to know that you failed them. If you aren't more forthcoming with us then your body parts are going to end up where they don't belong. Perhaps you would like to try again and tell us everything! Including what happened to Skagni and his home."

I assume we are in the woods - if no one else did then Ner will have dragged the chest laboriously to where the wolves were keeping the Ulfin thug leader - he ignores covering the drag marks through the snow

Most well placed roll of a one ever!

Ner showed no interest in the notes - all languages seemed to blur into one language for him and though he could make out some elf letters, various goblin letters, and even remembered some of his halfling letters - it all just took too much deciphering.
So he simply went on poking through this thug leader's things. He disassembled the man's chainmail and threw it over his shoulders piece-by-piece as if he were looking for something underneath it all. As Ner couldn't tell a master's handy-work from a masker's rowdy hat, he took the axe ... smelled it ... and buried it in the snow. If you're not gonna use it, best to put it to bed and let it sleep he thought to himself.
The coinage Ner had already passed on to Petronia. She always knew how to group the coins and how much to hand out and how much to save. She was smart that way.
He stopped and watched fascinated as the Druid seemed to wipe away the striations on Kazmir's stone armour. Ner looked at the two new potions quizzically with one nostril flared. He walked up to Matheus and pushed the two potions up at him. Ner spoke like he was privy to some sage information, "In Absalom three of these can get you a whole book. Here, you do the magician stuff ... but I get the food." He assigned the task like he had the power to.
Can any of us actually identify them? My appraisal skills are obviously non-existent

Identifying items is a Spellcraft check, and Matheus isn't really great at those either... although it does say under Magical Items -> Potions that you can taste a potion to identify it with a Perception check... that would be a lot easier, if it's a thing...

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (14) + 15 = 29

"Spoils of war, eh? Thank ye, I'll look after these then," Matheus said, swirling the liquid of one bottle and taking a sniff at the cork, wondering what the liquid inside was meant to do.

Kazmir rolls his shoulder as Matheus's magic binds the wounds together, and the bleeding stops.

"Thanks." he says shortly before turning to their captive. The dwarf grabs the notes and reads them narrowing his eyes.

"Where were you supposed to deliver your captives? You must have had a meet-up point in mind."

The man looked truly taken-aback. "Ummm...I just assumed she'd know somehow, and contact us. She didn't set anything up."

Petronia wrote:

The man shook his head quickly. "I don't know nothin' about any Skagni, or this home. It was burnt down already. Hjort hired us to watch the ruins for you lot, that's all I know. I swear it!"

Matheus wrote:

The colour and the smell of the liquids was quite distinctive, and Matheus easily recognizes them as potions of CLW.

I have two competing ideas on the table - either Ner tied up the unconscious guy and dragged the chest out to the woods for questioning, or else Petronia dragged the leader back to the house. Which is it?

Ner circled this thug looking him over. He crossed in behind Petronia and then in front of Kazmir. While staring at their captive, Ner motioned like he was gonna touch the man's ear, prodding at the Ulfen like he was some alien mystery. As Petronia and Kazimir threaten it must be disconcerting to have this curious little monkey examine him like a specimen.

Angie:
Ner will take any moment the ulfen seems distracted by the interrogation or by his sincerely curious prodding to try to lift anything he can find from the place the ulfen produced the two letters from slight of hand: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27 Just in case the captor is holding anything back from the interrogation

Did the captive not know where to find this Hjort fellow when Pertonia asked, or did he just not answer the question and perhaps hope we didn't notice since he did answer others?

"The lady asked if you knew where to find this Hjort. Do you?" Matheus asked mildly. "And you wouldn't mind providing us a decent description of him, right? Considering you already did betray his confidence and all."
