I took it upon myself to adjust your token accordingly, Valekar. Hope that’s not too officious. :)

Adonara’s hand drops to her whip as her words spook Wex, but she can tell from his path that she won’t be able to catch him with an easy swing as he goes by, unlike Ryker. She keeps an eye open with a view to making sure she neither gets in the way of Kira and Valekar nor leaves them unsupported.

As Ryker swings out with his greatsword, Adonara begins circling around to keep Wex off-balance. “Oh, you can’t leave now! I’m afraid we’ll have to positively insist,” she purrs.

Unless Pellius had a weapon to hand, I think apart from Ryker we’re all out of reach for attacks of opportunity.

Ryker deals Wex a telling blow.

Seeing the man attempt to run, Pellius tsks. "Now now, good sir, is that any way to react to paying customers? No wonder you are living here..." As he speaks, the singer focuses his will and draws in his breath.

His companions see nothing other than him mouth the word "STOP!" next, but to Wex it is like being screamed at through a megaphone.

Kira didn't expect Wex to run immediately, but fortunately he's running towards them rather than away. She nervously glances about for any dottari, (or other people who might get involved), before stepping back and casting her favorite spell.

In an operatic manner Pellius screams at Wex and he staggers back with the force of it. The next moment he is blinded by Valekar, followed up by being stunned by Kira's colour spray. As a result he stands there taking no actions

Adonara steps forward as Wex is hit with a flurry of spells in addition to Ryker’s sword strike. Her lips twitch in grim satisfaction as her arm lashes out to help subdue him.

Exactly how she does that depends on how shaky Wex’s defenses are, being blinded and stunned. If she can safely get her manacles on him, she’ll do that (I doubt it, since he’s not actually helpless, even if he can’t take actions), otherwise, she’ll move to flank with Ryker to try to trip Wex and leave him open to what’s almost an executioner’s swing at this point.

Move to close and draw her whip, swift to dip into her arcane pool, standard for a Trip attack, vs. CMD: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 7 + 2 + 4 = 23 (The last two are the bonuses for flanking and trying a combat manoeuvre against a stunned target.)

Time to end this, Adonara thinks. Aloud, she cries, "For Myrletta!"

Adonara easily manages to trip Wex and he falls to the floor groaning

Adonara’s glance cuts sharply across to Pellius, but she nods, “Very well.”

I doubt Wex will take 37 cuts, at least, she thinks. She considers the man carefully, gauging if he’s at all likely to try getting up.

Adonara steps to one side to give Kira more room to aim her spells if Wex doesn’t know when to quit. She nudges the man onto his side with her boot, none too gently, before pointedly coiling her whip loosely into the hand she holds over his head with serpentine speed.

I think so? I think apart from the fancy possessed knife and creepy serial-killer library, Wex seems pretty much a rude mechanical.

Adonara falls in step with Ryker on the other side of Wex as the group begins to steer the wretch for interrogation before Haetamon. As they go, she reluctantly considers what the best place might be if she ends up having to … snip some loose ends. The old livery? That would feel a bit off, given who we just moved through there. Perhaps the Fantasmagorium, which was more recently compromised, and so might better suit the purpose, and help us throw off the scent. We’ll see after we talk to Haetamon.

"Are we taking him to the new unlisted facility, sir? Frankly, that old sideshow gives me the creeps, but you know where we're meeting our church liaison," Adonara asks Pellius in Infernal, playing up the act that the party is affiliated with Thrune's regime and discreetly suggesting a stop at the Fantasmagorium. "Should we send a runner ahead?"

I don't think we thought that far ahead. Why don't we stop at the Fantasmagorium first, see if things are quiet there. It's not secure, but after we rolled through, I'm not sure the powers that be would want to revisit it, especially once they've already looted it. It's more or less on the way too, I think.

If it looks too risky, we can just keep going to Haetamon directly, but I'm not sure Haetamon would appreciate having Wex bundled into and out of his shop, especially if we decide that a disappearance is the best option.

Pellius inwardly curses at having not thought this through as thoroughly, but plays it off as being frustrated with Adonara.

Infernal:

"You mean you haven't sent someone already? The site should have been secured days ago for this purpose!"

The singer sighs dramatically and turns to Valekar. "You. Go to site two immediately and make sure that any welcome we have is expecting our friend here."

He then turns to Adonara and resumes in Infernal.

Infernal:

"Am I to assume that you haven't informed our liason to be expecting us, then? Well, don't just stand around gawking! Go and fetch him! And make sure that our novice knows where he is going first.... doubtless he has not been to our second site yet... bloody novices..."

Turning to Vex, he adds softly, "Do not think that their absence will make escape any easier. You try and our contact will merely have to rip your soul back and interrogate you in a more... painful... manner."

Kira follows a few paces behind the group. She hadn't been convinced that they would actually find their target, let alone with such conclusive proof, and the question of what to do now weighs heavily on her. Especially if it's possible the man really was ensorcelled.

Not at all. Enthusiasm is key. :)

Adonara salutes smartly and peels off to find Haetamon, already choosing her words carefully. The poor man. We can hardly say, ‘Dear Haetamon, we’re reasonably sure – more than reasonably, damningly sure – that we have the killer for you. You wouldn’t happen to have any inquisitorial spells prepared, would you? And what do you know about exorcizing magically intelligent weapons?’

The thought draws somewhat unwelcome attention to the feeling of Balgorrah where it? he? presses against her calf in her boot. It’s uncomfortable in a way any number of other daggers and so on haven’t been. She wishes she were skilled enough to deal with it all on her own. For the first time in her life, Adonara almost wishes her old rival Lyceria was around, even. The inquisitor would probably be able to extract and confirm a confession, she has to admit. Her mouth tightens at that thought too.

She eventually settles on uncharacteristic laconism. ‘We have the killer. There’s some question of magical influence, though I doubt it’s one of outright domination. Would you like to speak with him before we settle matters? We can try holding him, but – if I may – the spell you used this morning might be a better option.’

She hopes that will do. She won’t blame the Milanite if he doesn’t want to push deeper, or take on the burden of calling (or not) for an execution. Leave that to those of us with already broken hearts.

At the Fantasmagorium, Ryker finds a secluded room within. One without windows and near the center. After tying Wex to a chair and making sure someone can watch him, he does his best to see if anyone else is there. If he sees any curtains or other hangable fabrics, he collects them too. Don't know what they have in mind, but wouldn't put it past a Calistrian to want a little blood to spill. This'll block a lot of the... sound that Wex'll make.

On the way back to the Fantasmagorium, Adonara explains, “He seems to have been obsessed with the Temple Hill Slasher. He had a whole small library in a secret room in his apartment, full of strange things that he wouldn’t need for his work. If he were a sculptor, I could understand an interest in anatomy, but he isn’t, and there was an awful lot about the nature of blood, and bizarre speculations on the nature of the mortal soul. We took a representative sample of the papers, but there were too many to easily abscond with.”

The set of her mouth suggests that, speaking as a priestess, the madman’s profane ramblings do not prepossess her in his favour. She adds, too, she hopes reassuringly, all things considered, “As to the weapon, it had its own little stand, almost like a shrine. If worse comes to worst, we’re prepared to destroy it.”

Given what it’s been used for, she’s not callous enough to explain to Haetamon her thinking that if Balgorrah’s spirit, or whatever it is precisely, can be expelled, the fine kukri could be useful to the Silver Ravens at least as something that will bring in a bit of coin.

Nothing disturbs you as you hold Wex in the Fantasmagorium, he continues to mumble to himself but it seems as if the fight has gone out of him and he does not try to break his bonds.

Haetamon follows the rest of you back to the Fantasmagorium to view Wex.

"What a poor miserable creature, he is responsible for many deaths but I feel that he is not to blame. The kukri is, a weapon of a previous unspeakable murderer. It is clearly infused with evil. I can send it to one of the high priests of Sarenrae in Andoran, I believe they will be able to banish this item to Hell, where it belongs."

As it says this, Adonara you start to hear a whisper in your mind

"No, why let him send me away. Think of all the good we can do. You can use me to destroy all your enemies. All of them, they're all against you, you know, especially the singer and the gnome. Why not use me to destroy them. Destroy them all. (Will save please)."

"As for this poor man. He by rights should be punished for what he did, but the punishment here is too terminal. Besides death is too easy. I propose that I cast a spell at him to make him lose his memory and then I will send him to one of our houses in a nearby town where he will work as a monk, helping those in need for the rest of his days, with no memory and no contact with is former life."

Kira blinks at Pellius for a minute, then remembers he was standing guard outside. "Oh. Oh! I'm sorry, I forgot you weren't there. We found Balgorrah. Um, an intelligent weapon. Forged by Skinsaw cultists in the service of Norgorber. The Temple Hill Slasher used it for his murders, and there is some speculation that the blade was more to blame than the man." She glances back towards Wex. "So his comment about the blade making him do it might actually be true. Unfortunately I have no idea how to tell."

Once Haetamon arrives, Kira nods along at the suggestion of sending Balgorrah to a temple of Sarenrae. "If anyone can banish this evil, a high priest of the goddess of light seems like a good candidate." She shudders. "Plus I won't rest easy until it's out of the city."

She's a little more hesitant at Haetamon's suggestion of what to do with Wex. "Um, I'm sure you know better than me, but if you feel he's not to blame, doesn't wiping his memory and effectively enslaving him seem...harsh? I mean," (she shifts uneasily), "shouldn't we try to help him?"

"As for wiping his mind... is there a way of interrupting his connection to the blade long enough to actually ask him? You know, the real him, not this version of him."

I don’t like the sound of that!

Adonara’s eyes widen in surprise at the Milanite’s first suggestion, but even more at the voice in her head, and Pellius’ gentle admonishment. She’s hardly an expert in such matters, so she’s not sure Balgorrah can hear her mental question in reply, You’re not in his head too, are you, blasphemer?

She draws the weapon from her boot, extending her hand… Will save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 Oh no. “I think we should try breaking it first, yes. Any suggestions, Pellius? I'd like to see you try.” Your idea of using devastating aria sounds pretty good right now. :)

That is certainly not what I meant to say. Or, it came out sounding wrong. It is also true that another magic weapon could come in handy, but the others make a good point about how dangerous Balgorrah could be, and Adonara is fairly sure that she meant to present the blade hilt first.

She doesn’t exactly move to change the subject quickly, but she frowns, almost certainly because of what Haetamon’s suggesting for Wex. Apart from her free elven spirit, her goddess’ concern for memory leaves Adonara uncomfortable with the thought of wiping the man’s mind clean. Then again, since Haetamon is the closest thing Adonara has to a personal connection to weigh in on the vengeance Myrletta is owed, to say nothing of Wex’s previous victims, she’s inclined to be gracious about it. She confines herself to noting her concerns.

“While snuffing his light and letting his soul shrink from hungry daemons as long as it can in the afterlife is probably no more merciful than turning him over to the devil-kissers or tampering so drastically with his self-knowledge, as a servant of the Unquenchable Fire, I would be remiss not to point out that the memory of the wrong that provoked retribution sharpens its sting. Perhaps, too, by means of the very instrument used?”

I’ll leave putting Wex to the question for once we find out how just how bad failing that Will save gets. With a natural 1, the best bonus in the world isn't going to help. Looks like you're going to get your wish, Ryker. You just had to say it, didn't you?

Oh crap....

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

Not sure if that would be enough to see that she is coming off the rails or not... want to say it probably would be, given how long we have been adventuring together at this point... his actions would depend on whether he succeeds or not though.

As you are talking Adonara takes Balgorrah out of her boot and holds it up to the light, she seems entranced by the blade.

Pellius you strongly suspect that Balgorrah is trying to take over your ally.

Pellius tries to keep the alarm off of his face. "Adonara... dear... you really need to set the blade down on the floor gently and take a few steps back from it." As he speaks, he weaves a bit of magic into his words.

Normally would never do this, but casting Suggestion on Adonara. Suggestion being to put the blade down and walk away from it. Will save to negate (not sure if she would be unwilling normally, but normally I wouldn't be using compulsion magic on an ally/friend), DC of 16. Given it is a reasonable request, -1 or -2 penalty to the save roll.

Assuming she sets down the blade...:

Pellius smiles at her apologetically. "Sorry, I hate doing that to a friend."

Turning to the blade, Pellius shouts at it in various decibels for a few moments.

Using Devastating Aria on the blade. All damage sonic.
Round 1: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Round 2: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Round 3: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Round 4: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Round 5: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Round 6: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Round 7: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

So seven rounds of performance spent for 42 sonic damage to the blade. Not sure that is enough, but I don't want to be completely without any bardic performance left for the day, in case of trouble.

Just to prepare, I looked up the PRD on intelligent items. Scary stuff. ;) I’m more than happy to play along with whatever folks are comfortable with, and that makes sense with Adonara being chaotic good, if potentially dominated right now. I’ll take marching orders in spoilers, I guess?

For example:
This looks like fairly “extreme circumstances” to me, since we’re discussing banishing or destroying Balgorrah, so I guess it could even force Adonara to lash out, at least once? Since she is fundamentally trying to be a good person, could she switch to her whip while she tries to escape until she wins the others over to her “new friend,” and try to find someplace to lurk until she can try to re-establish dominance over the blade? Or could she just drop the darn thing with a supreme effort of will?

Let the drama continue! Pellius, I hope you’re taking notes for the eventual adaptation of our exploits for the opera, once we drive Thrune out. :)

Uncharacteristically, Adonara wobbles on her feet as she stares at the cursed kukri, her expression ghastly pale as invisible ideas war behind her eyes. The worst thing is, Balgorrah is clever enough to drag up, exploit, and warp some of her own thoughts, to the point that it's unclear which really are her own. The ‘gnome’ is my friend! And she knows that fascinating bone-shivering spell! Think of what we could do with it, if she teaches us! But Pellius … Pellius suspects…

His soothing words reach out to Adonara’s heart, the core of who she is. Will: 1d20 + 8 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 8 + 2 - 2 = 23 Where was that 15 yesterday? Ugh, and enchantments against elfishness... That part of her wails inwardly as Balgorrah clamps mercilessly over her better nature.

Her eyes narrow at the singer as she shakes off his spell, and her voice drops dangerously low, "Get out of my head."

Pellius sighs. So much for subtlety...

"Balgorrah, you are the one that needs to get out her head... not me. This, for the record, is exactly why that infernal thing needs to be shattered."

He holds his hands up at her, away from his weapons.

"Adonara, this is not you. You are a servant of your goddess, the Vengeful Sting. Not a servant of that things twisted deity." His face scrunches up.

"I'll make a deal with you. I wronged you just now by attempting to force you to do something that, while in your best interests, was against your will. I deserve punishment for that treachery." He holds his hands behind him. "Strike me with the blade... but leave it behind, buried in me. If you promise that you will not pull it out from my flesh upon stabbing with it, I promise to accept this judgement without complaint."

Kira looks at Adonara, momentarily confused, then her lips tighten as the situation hits,

Infernal:
”I knew touching that thing was a bad idea! “ She briefly switches her glare to Pellius. ”And you, I get what you’re trying to do, but I don’t know what kind of after-affects being stabbed by that thing would cause. Nope. Not happening. Sorry Adonara.”

Her hands twist in a familiar gesture, and dazzling colors fill the air.

Casting Color Spray. I also would never ordinarily cast a spell like this on a party member, but Kira has no intention of letting anyone get stabbed if she can help it.

Since I conveniently know Adonara’s HD, I’ll go ahead and roll for duration. Will DC19 to negate, otherwise she’s unconscious for 2d4 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8 rounds, then blinded and stunned for 1d4 ⇒ 1 rounds, then stunned for one last round. We’re not technically in initiative order yet, but about a minute of being unable to act should be plenty of time to get the damn thing away from her.

“See? See, I told you!” Balgorrah gloats in Adonara’s head, even as it roots around to twist her emotions and pull her strings.

And so, she tells Pellius, “I accept your apology, darling. But, really, we wouldn’t dream of it: you must consider the nature of the wasp. Fair’s fair, I’ll just charm you some other time when you’re being just a tiny bit frustrating. We’re not monsters, after all.”

Even as the part of her that’s forced to watch Balgorrah take over desperately wants to bite her tongue, the tilt of her head and the small, sly smile as she caresses the back of the blade is so very Adonara, as any number of clients would be able to attest. That said, there’s normally quite a bit more discussion about what exactly is going to happen, and a word or phrase set to make sure things don’t get out of hand.

Perhaps even more immediately alarmingly, anyone who’s paid any attention to Chelaxian folklore, or bandied words with a Calistrian, would note that Adonara’s only suggested accepting reparations for the attempted enchantment, and not the threat to her new (boy?) toy Balgorrah. My precioooouuusssss! ;)

Adonara’s head whips round, but before things can get any worse, Kira’s spell lands and the courtesan collapses, Balgorrah skittering out of her hand.

Well, that's a relief!

Pellius holds a hand up as the blade scatters across the floor.

"Keep back from it. Let's see if I can't take some of the spirit out of it."

So saying, he switches to Celestial and begins shouting at the blade, putting as much solemnity and finality as he can into the words.

Sonic 1: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Sonic 2: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Sonic 3: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Sonic 4: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Sonic 5: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Sonic 6: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Sonic 7: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Sonic 8: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Sonic 9: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Sonic 16: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Sonic 17: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

So I just spent all my performance rounds for today (each attack would have been a standard action) and deal 115 sonic damage to this bloody thing. With any luck, I at least put a dent in it. ;)

As he finally stops sing-shouting, he takes a breath. "Whew... that took a decent amount out of me."

Male High Azlanti DM

You all cover your ears as Pellius starts to scream, wave after wave of sonic pulses burst through the air, striking Balgorrah directly. Eventually it shatters into 3 parts and appears to go inert.

Pellius smiles as he looks down upon the cursed blade's remains.

"I would make sure that you send each piece separately. After sealing them in something. Preferably something hard to break through." The singer laughs, though it is clear that he is still a bit winded from the effort spent sing/shouting in that range for so long.

"Thank you, Kira, for your quick action. I was not looking forward to being stabbed period. Let alone by something so vile. You quite possibly just saved my life." He looks down at Adonara. "As well as hers. Hopefully it being broken will break its hold on her, given she wasn't under its influence long."

He faces Wex. "How about you, sir? Your head any clearer now?"
