Quinn takes the potion that Soddy offered and drinks it

At the mention, rather loudly, of his name the young man turns to Gervase and moves to where she and Nixa are standing.

"Ummm, Hi....." the young man begins awkwardly and after a fairly long pause continues. "Ummm, I am Quinn...ummm"

Quinn turns quickly to Gervase as if maybe just looking at a different woman would give him the answers he needs to converse with this young lady.

Taking a deep breath in he continues, "We had quite the time getting here. I hope you survived okay, are you hurt we have an excellent healer she brought me back from almost death."

As he mentions healing Quinn points to Annea. "We would like to get moving again soon, are you able to travel? We found a diary that mentioned someone named Mezodarath, does that ring a bell with you? It seems this being helped the bugbear and goblin tribe and still out there free, and we are worried the danger to Saringallow and the surrounding area hasn't ended. Curse of the Crimson Throne | Loot

As Soddy Daisy suggests, Bellisir, Boom Sticks, and Quinn drink the three potions of cure light wounds. A combination of Annea's healing hexes and your wands finish patching the rest of your bleeding holes.

Gervase uses her cold iron spear to make sure Mezodarath, Leeza, and the rest of goblins, Mother Hound and her pups never trouble anyone again, and Bellisir organizes a pyre upon which to incinerate the corpses. Meanwhile, Annea channels positive energy to destroy the remnants of demon's bile on the bodies and scattered around the fort.

When Bellisir informs Nixa that her cousin Nolaria is well and waiting for her back in Saringallow, the young woman is anxious to depart.

A couple of you sit Quinn down and, speaking slowly, explain that Mezodarath was the bugbear you defeated. The slack-jawed shifter nods, the lights finally flickering in his eyes as understanding dawns. He's still a little wonky after his near-death experience.

You consider Mezodarath's mention in his journal of a lurching, bloated, fleshy creature called a vermlek, whom the bugbear cleric referred to as Wormgnash. The ranger is certain this vermlek is no 'natural' creature. Something else, perhaps?

Much food for thought on your return trek to Saringallow...

Upon returning to Saringallow, you collect the bounties you’re owed by providing proof of the goblins’ deaths, their recovered weapons and Nixa Volsetti's testimony convincing the mayor.

"Well done, Pathfinders." Mayor Sandra Trinelli passes you a pouch of gold. "Let's hope that's the last we see of goblins and bugbears around here."

The mayor listens to your description of the scene at Highfort, and she's relieved to hear that you destroyed the demon's bile, so it won't contaminate other creatures and create new horrors.

---
After reporting to the mayor at the Town Hall, you take Nixa Volsetti to see her cousin Nolaria Wintren at the Temple of Erastil. Nolaria is overjoyed to be reunited with her beloved cousin and thanks you profusely.

"Were it not for all of you," she emphasizes, "Nixa and I would likely not have survived this terrible turn of events."

"Come, tell me everything." Nolaria looks to you and to Nixa. "What happened?"

You share what you've experienced and discovered, since you last spoke to the young apprentice.

When you're finished, Nixa shrugs. "Unfortunately, I can't relate any significant details about my abductor, other than that he seemed to know the others who were also being held prisoner with Nolaria and me."

She falls silent, disappointed that she has no other clues. After a few moments of awkward quiet, Nixa gasps and puts her palm to her forehead.

"During my captivity, though, I overheard the bugbear jabbering on about something named Wormgnash."

Your interest in this bit of recall encourages the young fighter to continue, much more animated and excited. "Mezodarath often mentioned that name in connection with the old Sarini Estate. The bugbear seemed to be either praying to this Wormgnash or beseeching its favor."

"My theory?" she asks in a low, ominous voice, eyes wide and eyebrows raised. "A potentially serious danger might now lurk in or near the estate."

After two more nights on the cold ground during your trek back to Saringallow, you look forward to a warm, soft bed in your rooms back Witch’s End Tavern, as if it were a spa experience.

Through the debriefing from Mayor Trinelli, he is silent, giving the mayor a nod of acknowledgement for recognizing the group's efforts.

As the group says goodbye to Nixi and Nolaria, Bellisir gives the pair some words of wisdom. "I admire your desire to do great deeds," he says. "But always temper those steps toward them with wisdom." With that, he allows a rare smile. "Each to their fate."

Chapter 3: The Festering Blot

Although it’s covered in a layer of files and paperwork that indicate its official nature, this office is also eminently comfortable, with its plush carpet, velvet-lined oaken furniture, and ornate serving carts bearing colorful fruit and fine drinks. The soothing smell of sage and apple blossoms floats on a warm breeze wafting through the large, open picture window.

At the center of the room, behind a solid and polished wooden desk, sits Mayor Sandra Trinelli, her long fingers folded together in thought. Her face is solemn as she surveys her visitors.

"Thank you for your quick attention to my request," she begins, motioning to the oversized chairs in front of her. "Alcie Kruptin tells me you've been talking about the Sarini estate. As it happens, I've a delicate task that needs doing, and it promises results of great significance to our beleaguered population. Let me explain."

"The history of this town, I’m afraid, is written in blood. More than a century ago, the family that founded Saringallow committed heinous crimes against the hard-working folks who toiled on their behalf. When all was said and done, these nobles—the Sarinis—kidnapped and murdered many local children."

"They were hanged for their crimes, but the bodies of the youths were never found, and our families still suffer those tragic memories today." The mayor pours herself a glass of hard cider and holds up the bottle, offering some to you. "After all of these years, they’ve never had closure, and our town has never been the same."

"However, not long ago, while I was searching the town archives, I discovered a few old letters that seem to indicate that these evil nobles kept records of their victims and diabolical rituals." She drums her fingers on the top of her desk. "Finding these documents would go a long way toward healing the deep wounds the Sarinis inflicted on our poor people."

"Unfortunately, the evidence is presumably stored in the Sarinis old, walled estate, which is located some distance from Saringallow proper." Mayor Trinelli sighs. "Around here, superstitions regarding the Sarini family still run deep, and the good men and women of our town watch—bless their hearts—are reluctant to help."

"There’s no proof, however, that any of the rumors about the Sarini Estate are real, so I’d like to hire you help me solve this matter. Please, if you will, bring me any records of these terrible crimes that exist. Once you do, I believe our town will finally begin to heal. I trust that you are capable, and I hope that a reward of 100gp will be enough to persuade you to help."

"How can I help you?" she asks, shoving a pile to one side with an elbow. "I need a break from sorting through this mess anyway."

Lupia gestures to the stacks on top of the counter. "Someone donated these this morning. Said they were left in an abandoned warehouse. Nothing but stuff no one will ever read. Just look at these titles. Morals and Ethics: Why They Still (Ought to) Matter; Snowflakes in July: How to Raise Children Who Don't Melt in the Sun; Common Sense Economics: Earn Some, Save Some, Invest Some, or be a Parasite. Sheesh, what useless drivel, right?!"

In the shelves behind the young lady, though, everything looks meticulously labeled and indexed.

"If you're looking for something in particular," Lupia says, "all you need to do is give me a keyword and I’ll fetch any documents related to the topic."

Town Hall Archives

Lupia frowns when Gervase rattles off a list of troubling key words. She repeats the list back to her, "Sarini, Kidnap, Diabolical, Ritual, Badger. Badger? Really?"

The archivist heads off into the stacks and returns in a couple of minutes bearing a couple of books and scrolls. "Here you go. I'm afraid we don't have anything on badgers."

Luca Sarini: A death certificate says the following: Adolescent ward of half-Mwangi descent. Died of an accidental poisoning at the Sarini Estate in 4599 ar.

Linguistics DC10:
You realize the handwriting of the word “accidental” shows hesitation, as if writer didn’t believe that the poisoning was accidental.

Marcius Sarini: A deployment letter dated 4585 ar indicates that Marcius Sarini volunteered to serve in the Chelish army and trained to lead a special engineering unit.

Craft (traps), Disable Device, or Profession (soldier) DC13:
You deduce that his training involved building traps and sabotage, among other things.

A letter from a servant dated after Marcius’s return also indicates that the rising baron brought a young ward by the name of Luca back to his family’s estate in Saringallow.
Linguistics DC10:
You notice the word 'ward' is written messily, with no further accompanying explanation, as if the writer were uncomfortable lingering on the topic for long.

Sadira Sarini: Documents indicate that the baroness was originally from Remesiana in Cheliax.

Knowledge (nobility) DC16:
You deduce that Sadira was a member of House Dioso, an influential Chelish family.

Sarini Estate: An invoice for construction materials reveals that the construction of the main estate building began in 4426 ar, and a later bill indicates that a wall was built around the grounds in 4600 ar.

Knowledge (engineering) or Profession (architect) DC12:
You notice the amount of construction materials ordered was too large for the wall’s size.

Linguistics or Perception DC14:
You notice that the text has been tampered with to obscure some details.

Another individual document indicates that the last legal owners of the Sarini Estate were the Baron Marcius Sarini and Baroness Sadira Sarini, who acquired joint ownership of the property in 4593 ar.

"There are no documents that even mention the word diabolism or any other outward indicators of the subject," Lupia says. Then she smiles, triumphant. "However, I'm a skilled archivist, and I managed to dig up some letters from Marcius Sarini to an unnamed priest of Asmodeus in Egorian."

Lupia sets the correspondence down on the table where you're studying all the resources she's brought you.

The letters contain vague and cryptic language, but they do mention the existence of gifts for a nebulous patron, and that these gifts were carefully recorded somewhere in a secure location on the estate known only to Marcius and Sadira knew.

Knowledge (arcana, planes, or religion) DC14:
You realize this is a reference to diabolic sacrifices and the records the mayor seeks.

"Is there anything else that you're researching?" Lupia Marietti asks.

Rumors in Saringallow

Quinn and Boom Sticks try to talk to the villagers of Saringallow, but little children run away from them, the elderly pretend they're deaf, and most adults claim to be too busy to talk.

---

Soddy Daisy stumbles into a garden, where a man mistakes her for weed. When he pulls her hair, trying to uproot her, she squeaks in surprise.

The gardener apologizes. "Sorry, there vegetable-lady. Thought you was a thistle."

"The Sarini Estate?" The man takes off his gloves, stuffs them in a pocket of his coveralls, and scratches his ear. "Those evil Sarinis were hanged—they were hanged high! Ever think where the 'gallow' in Saringallow comes from?"

He gestures, impatient for the leshy to move along. "'Scuse me, now, missy. Yer standin' in the middle of me carrots."

---

Almost everyone Annea meets wants to talk.

"I like your hair," says one young girl with two red pigtails.

When Annea asks about the Sarini Estate, the girl's eyes get big and she covers her mouth in fright. "The Sarini Estate is haunted! Hungry ghouls and ghosts lurk in the shadows!"

The little girl runs away, screaming for her mother.

Annea passes near the Temple of Erastil, where she strikes up a conversation with one of the groundskeepers.

He spits in the dirt and waves his hands in an antler sign, a gesture to ward off evil. "The Sarinis worshiped demons and devils, and they held unspeakable revels at their estate back in the day!"

On the front porch of the Witch's Tavern, two old ladies are drinking moonshine from a large pitcher, when Annea poses her question.

"They say there’s a funny smell coming from the estate," says one of two women, wiping her chin with a stained handkerchief, "and it’s the smell of rotting corpses."

The other crone nods in agreement. "Hm-hmm, that's right. You tell 'er, girlfriend."

Mayor's Office, Town Hall

Bellisir hesitates when the rest of the team leaves the mayor's office, heading off to the archives or gathering what information they can in the village.

By nature rather reserved, he's hesitant to approach strangers and ask them questions about a subject so sensitive as the history of House Sarini. Then it occurs to him that he could instead ask some of the townsfolk he already knows. They must certainly have heard some of the old lore, legends, and lies.

Who knows, he might even learn a clue or two that would provide some direction for the search of the archives.

Archives, Town Hall

"'Abyss, demons, vermlek, and Lamashtu.' Just a moment." Lupia heads off into the stacks.

She returns after a few minutes, shaking her head. "Nope, sorry. Anything else?"

From the days of rest from their outing into the wilderness, Bellisir does not spend a whole lot of time socializing with his companions. Stopping only to eat and to sleep, the monk spends his time going through his rituals of physical kata, meditating upon his sudden insight of knowledge and building a rapport with both in combining both together.

On the day that Mayor Trinelli would send for the heroes once more, the half-elf is sitting on top of the roof in the lotus position, deep in his meditation exercises. As he exhales, a small still voice breaks through the mystic zone that Bellisir is in.

"Learn to trust your instincts. They will allow you to discern theveracity of all things."

Bellisir's eyes fly open as he speaks. "Master! I-" and stops as he realizes no one is near him.

As the half-elf starts to resume his exercises, he is interrupted by a bird's cry and turns to see Tyndwyn perched nearby. Nodding, Bellisir stands up and makes his way down off the roof to join his companions as they go to meet with Mayor Trinelli.

After their briefing, the group splits up to follow up on leads. By his conservative and (some might say) aloof nature, Bellisir stays behind in the archives. His inquiries to Lupia turn up nothing, but Gervase seems to have a little bit better luck in what she's found. Calmly walking over to where the ranger is perusing potential leads.

"May I be of assistance?"

The monk looks over the death certificate and deployment letter, seeing nothing unusual.

"Trust your instincts."

The words in the back of his mind, he picks up the servant's letter and reads through. Finding nothing to discern, he moves to the document on Sadira Sarini.

"Interesting, Gervase. The amount of limestone, basalt, and mortar used here could build a wall the length of two thousand feet. "The letters lend credence to the records Mayor Trinelli asked us to find. They also speak of diabolic sacrifices, which makes sense considering Marcius Sarini's correspondence with this priest of Asmodeus. If we can find this location on the estate grounds where the Sarini's kept these gifts, we will find the records."

As he puts the letters down, Bellisir's thought wander to Uncle Fu and his spirit present with him.

Thank you, Master, for your everlasting guidance as I walk the path in front of me.
