Kassen Battle Maps

Hello and welcome to the Kobalt Kobold. Feel free to kick back and relax. Have one on the house and spin a yarn or two.

So, feel free to post out of character discussions, rants, and random bits of silliness here. Feel free to make plans out of character as well and to explain any reasoning you may have for your character's actions.

But mostly, feel free to goof off here. It's supposed to be fun after all. :)

Checking in~

I'll have to give it a think about who else to possibly invite. Basically everyone else from Shattered Star is pretty busy IRL lately but I could maybe hit up some other folks and see if any would be interested.

All that said, you could see if Joe might be interested?

Kassen Battle Maps

I'll check with Joe. As far as people from outside of the Shattered Star group, if they have the time and are interested, I'm all for it.

No rush as I said before. I'm having to read through the module anyway.

Hello! Thank you, Lady Ladile for passing the info for this along. There are a couple of classes I'd like to play, but I want to see what everyone else is thinking of bringing to the table first. Whatever I decide on, it will probably be core vanilla in terms of race/class.

Kassen Battle Maps

Not a problem. Happy to have ya along. :)

Lady Ladile already knows this, but I tend to be more RP focused and love having character moments throughout the game, so I'm much more interested in what the flavor behind the character is than the particulars of the build. If you have any questions, let me know and I'll do my best to answer them.

male human bard 6/drunken philosopher 1

Hi guys! I'd love to join with a dwarf cleric if that helps anyone else decide.

Kassen Battle Maps

Could make this an all dwarf party. That might be interesting. :)

Nice to see you here Joe! Looks like we've got three now; are you going for 4 players Salsa or the full 6?

Kassen Battle Maps

At least 4. Not sure if I want 6 or if 4 or 5 will be good.

Kassen Battle Maps

So, for all of you working on your characters, one of the things I'll be needing is a reason your character is currently in a small town in Eastern Andoran. I've got a plan for getting everyone together, so don't worry about how you all know each other unless you want to start together.

^Noted.

Also I finally got around to putting out a notice to some other PbP folks to see if anyone would be interested in joining us. I should get some responses on that pretty soon since most of them are early birds!

Okay, got one potential nibble so far. They said they'd give it some thought and were (at the moment) leaning towards ranger/hunter/slayer territory.

Kassen Battle Maps

Cool. Tell them to drop in if they really want to play.

Also, I haven't seen your brother post here Double-L. I guess he's busy?

I'm here. Ask and you shall receive. I'm still debating on what class I want to play. Once I know, I'll make an alias.

Kassen Battle Maps

Alrighty. Fair enough.

By the way, how much older are you than your sister, from one older brother to another?

If it helps narrow down the field a little more, I was thinking I might try a kineticist since I've not played one before :D

DM-Salsa wrote:

I'm almost twelve years older. Whatever day her birthday falls on, mine is the same day two weeks later.

Lady Ladile wrote:

I would be the potential catch here he he. Thanks for letting me know about this Ladile.

As I said I am toying with the idea of playing a Ranger, or possibly a druid here, still looking over the archetypes. I have been slowed by this cold that I am still recovering from, and while I feel OK now, I am still a little tired so my creative juices are rather low. Still a couple of the ranger archetypes are interesting, like the Dragon Hunter and the Spirit Ranger.

I'll look over the archetypes this weekend and throw up a concept hopefully by Monday :)

By the way, do we still need more people? I've got a couple of other folks I can ask if you wanted a 5th or even a 6th :)

Kassen Battle Maps

No worries and no rush. The more y'all put into your characters, the more knives I get to twi–I mean, the more fun we all get to have. :D

More than happy to have you along for the ride, Eric. I just hope you can forgive me my more than occasional screwup.

We'll be starting in a town in Andoran before moving on to where the module takes place. I have something in mind for bringing y'all together, so you don't have to worry about that. I just need a reason why you're in town and would jump in to help with a problem.
@RowynStarr: Oh wow. I wasn't expecting that big of a gap. My sister and I are two and a half years apart, so that might be coloring my expectations a bit.

male human bard 6/drunken philosopher 1

I'm still in with the cleric, but my next 3 weeks are going to be super busy. I will try to find time to get an outline up soon, but after that 3 weeks my attendance will be much better.

I've got most of my character done, both here and on a physical character sheet. I just have pick a couple of traits and come up with a backstory and I'll have him ready to submit for approval.

Speaking of submitting characters, @DM-Salsa, I saw you submitted one for the REotR PbP game that's currently open. I submitted one there, too. And while Lady Ladile have a big age gap between us, we're still really close as siblings.

Kassen Battle Maps

@RowynStarr: Cool. I haven't had the time to read through everyone's background, but Dragas looks like he'd be a fun one to see develop. Something tells me that he and Kiley might not get along at first. We'll see if we both get in, though I'm not sure if Kiley's going to make the cut.

@Joe: Hope you aren't too busy over the next few weeks. Take it easy with this. Like I said, I'm not in a big rush to start. We'll get going once we have everyone ready.

Speaking of, do you want me to open up recruitment for this once we know what all y'all are playing?

We can; did you decide on the full 6-person party?

And on that note, I've got three days off after this current shift ends so I should be able to get some work done on my character during that time :)

Kassen Battle Maps

Might as well get three if I'm going to do it for one or two. :)

So we have a Ranger/Druid, a Kineticist, and a Monk? I would like to know for sure
before I go making a recruitment thread.

male human bard 6/drunken philosopher 1

and Joe's cleric?.....don't forget poor Joe :(

Kassen Battle Maps

Oops! Sorry.

Okay, so Ranger or Druid, a Kineticist, a monk, and a cleric. Dunno why but I always seem to forget someone. (Sorry Joe! It's nothing personal just me being a spaz.)

That sounds like a fairly well-rounded party. Do you think I should get a couple more players?

I'm neutral; the only thing we're kinda lacking is arcane power but most of the time that can be worked around with a bit of effort :)

Kassen Battle Maps

True. :)

Okay, so if Eric's on board (it sounded like he is though) then all we need is some characters. :P

I'm going to wait for until Joe's not as busy so we can hit the ground running.

^That works for me; hopefully in three weeks or so a couple of my PFS player games will be at their midpoints or beyond so they'll be winding down as this one winds up :)

I am indeed still interested in this game yet I have run into a but of a creative block here in my character concept, so I think this delay will help me out here :)

Kassen Battle Maps

Well, guess this will work out for all of us. :D

If you need help brainstorming some ideas up, I'm always happy to help.

RowynStarr wrote:

Yep. Rowyn has always, for as long as I can remember, taken an interest in my life and what's happening in it. Based on conversations I've had with other people who have similar age gaps between themselves and siblings this isn't always the case. Luckily we have similar taste in many things and this became more apparent once I hit my teenage years :)

Kassen Battle Maps

That's good. I'm glad to know you two get along so well. I and my sister are two and a half years apart. We are closer than our cousins who are only a little more apart than that, I think. We don't have a lot of the same interests, but we care about each other.

Size:Half-elves are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.

Base Speed: Half-elves have a base speed of 30 feet.

Keen Senses: Half-elves receive a +2 racial bonus on Perception checks.

Multitalented: Half-elves choose two favored classes at first level and gain +1 hit point or +1 skill point whenever they take a level in either one of those classes.
--------------------
Class Features
--------------------
Weapon Proficiency: Monks are proficient with the brass knuckles, cestus, club, crossbow (light or heavy), dagger, handaxe, javelin, kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, shortspear, short sword, shuriken, siangham, sling, spear and temple sword.

Armor and Shield Proficiency: Monks are not proficient with any armor or shields. When wearing armor, using a shield, or carrying a medium or heavy load, a monk loses his AC bonus, as well as his fast movement and flurry of blows abilities.

AC Bonus (Ex): When unarmored and unencumbered, the monk adds his Wisdom bonus (if any) to his AC and his CMD. In addition, a monk gains a +1 bonus to AC and CMD at 4th level. This bonus increases by 1 for every four monk levels thereafter, up to a maximum of +5 at 20th level.

These bonuses to AC apply even against touch attacks or when the monk is flat-footed. He loses these bonuses when he is immobilized or helpless, when he wears any armor, when he carries a shield, or when he carries a medium or heavy load.

Flurry of Blows (Ex):Starting at 1st level, a monk can make a flurry of blows as a full-attack action.

When doing so, he may make one additional attack, taking a –2 penalty on all of his attack rolls, as if using the Two-Weapon Fighting feat. These attacks can be any combination of unarmed strikes and attacks with a monk special weapon (he does not need to use two weapons to utilize this ability).

For the purpose of these attacks, the monk’s base attack bonus from his monk class levels is equal to his monk level. For all other purposes, such as qualifying for a feat or a prestige class, the monk uses his normal base attack bonus.

At 8th level, the monk can make two additional attacks when he uses flurry of blows, as if using Improved Two-Weapon Fighting (even if the monk does not meet the prerequisites for the feat).

At 15th level, the monk can make three additional attacks using flurry of blows, as if using Greater Two-Weapon Fighting (even if the monk does not meet the prerequisites for the feat).

A monk applies his full Strength bonus to his damage rolls for all successful attacks made with flurry of blows, whether the attacks are made with an off-hand or with a weapon wielded in both hands. A monk may substitute disarm, sunder, and trip combat maneuvers for unarmed attacks as part of a flurry of blows. A monk cannot use any weapon other than an unarmed strike or a special monk weapon as part of a flurry of blows. A monk with natural weapons cannot use such weapons as part of a flurry of blows, nor can he make natural attacks in addition to his flurry of blows attacks.

Unarmed Strike: At 1st level, a monk gains Improved Unarmed Strike as a bonus feat. A monk’s attacks may be with fist, elbows, knees, and feet. This means that a monk may make unarmed strikes with his hands full. There is no such thing as an off-hand attack for a monk striking unarmed. A monk may thus apply his full Strength bonus on damage rolls for all his unarmed strikes.

Usually a monk’s unarmed strikes deal lethal damage, but he can choose to deal nonlethal damage instead with no penalty on his attack roll. He has the same choice to deal lethal or nonlethal damage while grappling.

A monk’s unarmed strike is treated as both a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve either manufactured weapons or natural weapons.

A monk also deals more damage with his unarmed strikes than a normal person would.

Bonus Feat: At 1st level, 2nd level, and every 4 levels thereafter, a monk may select a bonus feat. These feats must be taken from the following list: Catch Off-Guard, Combat Reflexes, Deflect Arrows, Dodge, Improved Grapple, Scorpion Style, and Throw Anything.

At 6th level, the following feats are added to the list: Gorgon’s Fist, Improved Bull Rush, Improved Disarm, Improved Feint, Improved Trip, and Mobility.

At 10th level, the following feats are added to the list: Improved Critical, Medusa’s Wrath, Snatch Arrows, and Spring Attack.

A monk need not have any of the prerequisites normally required for these feats to select them.

Stunning Fist (Ex): At 1st level, the monk gains Stunning Fist as a bonus feat, even if he does not meet the prerequisites. The monk may attempt a stunning attack a number of times per day equal to his monk level, plus one more time per day for every four levels he has in classes other than monk.

At 4th level, and every 4 levels thereafter, the monk gains the ability to apply a new condition to the target of his Stunning Fist. This condition replaces stunning the target for 1 round, and a successful saving throw still negates the effect.

At 4th level, he can choose to make the target fatigued.

At 8th level, he can make the target sickened for 1 minute.

At 12th level, he can make the target staggered for 1d6+1 rounds.

At 16th level, he can permanently blind or deafen the target.

At 20th level, he can paralyze the target for 1d6+1 rounds.

The monk must choose which condition will apply before the attack roll is made. These effects do not stack with themselves (a creature sickened by Stunning Fist cannot become nauseated if hit by Stunning Fist again), but additional hits do increase the duration.
--------------------
Traits
--------------------
Martial Manuscript Basic(Faith)-You either carry or have memorized a sacred text from your school, temple, or monastery, and its wisdom gives you insight that makes your attacks more devastating. You gain a +2 trait bonus on rolls to confirm critical hits when you’re using an unarmed strike or monk weapon.

Style Sage Basic(Social)-You have a passion for history and news concerning monastic disciplines. You gain a +1 trait bonus on checks with your choice of either Knowledge (local) or Knowledge (history), and the one you choose is always a class skill for you. In addition, you gain a +1 trait bonus on Diplomacy checks made to gather information about any person with levels in monk.
--------------------
Feats
--------------------
Improved Initiative-You get a +4 bonus on initiative checks.

Skill Focus (Sense Motive)-You get a +3 bonus on all checks involving the chosen skill. If you have 10 or more ranks in that skill, this bonus increases to +6.

Stunning Fist-You must declare that you are using this feat before you make your attack roll (thus, a failed attack roll ruins the attempt). Stunning Fist forces a foe damaged by your unarmed attack to make a Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 + 1/2 your character level + your Wis modifier), in addition to dealing damage normally. A defender who fails this saving throw is stunned for 1 round (until just before your next turn). A stunned character drops everything held, can't take actions, loses any Dexterity bonus to AC, and takes a –2 penalty to AC. You may attempt a stunning attack once per day for every four levels you have attained (but see Special), and no more than once per round. Constructs, oozes, plants, undead, incorporeal creatures, and creatures immune to critical hits cannot be stunned. A monk receives Stunning Fist as a bonus feat at 1st level, even if he does not meet the prerequisites. A monk may attempt a stunning attack a number of times per day equal to his monk level, plus one more time per day for every four levels he has in classes other than monk.

Toughness-You gain +3 hit points. For every Hit Die you possess beyond 3, you gain an additional +1 hit point. If you have more than 3 Hit Dice, you gain +1 hit points whenever you gain a Hit Die (such as when you gain a level).

Backstory:
Bellisar Reycyne grew up having never known his parents. Raised by his uncle Ezekiel and his aunt Rina in a small town in the eastern region of Andoran, the young boy proved himself to be a studious pupil in his schooling, but remained a quiet, introspective dreamer among his peers, who mistook his personality for aloofness. To his wards, Bellisar was the dutiful nephew, doing what he could to help them eke out a living on their homestead.

One day at the local marketplace, the teenage boy's attention was drawn to a group of boys mocking a man of Eastern descent as he struggled to carry a large crate. Without a word, Bellisar came to the man's aid and helped him carry the crate to a very sparse one roomed log dwelling deep within the woods. The man he aided introduced himself as Fu, a martial arts practitioner from the continent of Tian Xia. Curious to understand more about Fu's culture and homeland, Bellisar begain spending his free time with him in an effort to learn more of Tian Xia and its history.

Over the remaining years of Bellisar's adolescence, a bond of friendship and respect grew between himself and Fu, the latter becoming an unspoken mentor to the former. With the growth of that trust came the beginnings of instruction in the martial arts tempered by Fu's years of wisdom. How much Bellisar would grow under Fu's tutelage would never be known, when Ezekiel and Rina both succumbed to scarlet fever. With no will, any claim to their homestead was lost to the local authorities, but Bellisar discovered among their effects a letter written three years prior that revealed that Bellisar's father Kall was still alive, his last location being the Andoran city of Augustana.

With nothing but Fu's presence holding him to the town, Bellisar is currently doing the best he can to finish any standing affairs his caregivers left behind in their passing and seeks to travel to Augustana to find his human father in hopes of discovering his parentage.

Personality:
Bellisar is short for a half-elf, standing at just 5'2'' and whip thin. With light brown hair and brown eyes that exude a quite and shy persona, Bellisar is inwardly torn between keeping a high level of anonymity due to his raising and heritage and doing what is right by those he comes to trust. Earning his friendship is a rare gift to be received.

Kassen Battle Maps

Oh, nicely done! For a moment I thought he'd helped a Qadiran, which would have been really interesting given Andoran's proximity to Taldor.

Kassen Battle Maps

By the way, anyone else who has a character ready or that they are working on can post here. I'm more than happy to work with y'all on whatever backgrounds you have.

male human bard 6/drunken philosopher 1

Im not very familiar with the golarian setting. I have a backstory that may need help with city names and such.

Kassen Battle Maps

I can help with some things. Unfortunately most of the stuff I know about Golarion is around Varisia and The Land of the Linnorm Kings. Andoran and Taldor are less well known to me.

Still here and working on my character...his profile is HERE if you want to take a peek he he

Kassen Battle Maps

I almost hate to bring this up, but I've been mulling something over for the past couple of days and I thought it'd only be fair to give y'all first right of refusal.

I've been thinking about running a more old-school, sandbox style game in a homebrew setting. We could, of course, work in Dragon's Demand somehow, but we don't have to. Build rules would remain unchanged, so the only things that might be an issue are the background and flavor about your characters. If I'm honest, even that can be worked around with very little effort, I think.

The advantages here are you'd be able to add in some of your own flavor into the world without having to worry about if it's canon or not and you'd be free to do whatever as a group. I'm more than willing to work with y'all on this and on the plus side, I can tailor things to fit your characters' and your interests throughout rather than just at the beginning.

The disadvantages are that y'all would have to drive the plot. I can give nudges and provide some impetus to get the ball rolling, but it's ultimately up to y'all.

So, I guess I'm asking what you're more interested in. Either way, I'm still running a game for y'all and I'm happy to be doing so. I'm looking forward to seeing what all of you come up with.

Hmm....to be honest, I'll have to think it over. We've talked a little about this sort of thing in the past and so you know that I'm generally not a fan of sandbox or homebrew games :)

I am OK with a sandbox style game DM-Salsa.

Have you looked into any of the Lost Lands settings...Frog God/Necromancer books? I can shoot you links if you like :)

Kassen Battle Maps

@Lady Ladile: Sorry. It's been a while so I'd forgotten about that. I am still willing to run Dragon's Demand, though I'm tempted to put it in a different setting just so I can shape things a little bit more to my liking. As I said, this was first right of refusal. If everyone's not on board, I'll still run Dragon's demand and set up a new game for those that would like to play the sandbox adventure. So no worries if you're not interested. :)

@Eric: I haven't thought about the Lost Lands. I have the Blight setting book, but I haven't read through it much since I was in GM Zed's Levee game. I also have the Midgard setting book and Deep magic from Kobold press that I could steal from or even use whole cloth if you'd rather do that. I've got a couple of ideas for settings that could work depending on the preferences of the players.

Aletheria:

This one's my baby. :)
The setting centers around the failing empire of Sal-Kavun, the last of the Thaumatic Kingdoms. Most of the towns and cities have been reduced to ruins over the centuries of decline as squabbling nobles and marauding bandits and monsters take their toll. There's plenty of places for intrigue and exploration here, so this would probably be my first choice.

Skylands:

All the land of the world floats above a vast, glittering sea. High fantasy and adventure with a good bit of swashbuckling would be the fare of the day. This one would take more work, but it could be a lot of fun I think.

Something inspired by Finnish Myth:

This one's more just a concept than anything concrete at the moment, but imagine a world where the stars, moon, and sun are guided by great bird spirits and the Grim Reaper is a black swan. At the center of the world is the Sampo, a golden tower where vast treasures are rumored to lie.

male human bard 6/drunken philosopher 1

I'm not familiar with the AP and not opposed to sandbox games. I'll happily stumble blindly through whatever realm you place before me. :)

I am a HUGE fan of the Lost Land setting, so much so I backed the KS for the Campaign Setting :D As for the other settings, all of them have good potential but I know Lady Ladile has expressed frustration with sandbox games before so maybe we could start a new sandbox campaign after we get Dragon's Demand going.

Thoughts?

Kassen Battle Maps

@Eric: I was thinking along those same lines. I'll get this rolling before I go kicking that off, but it sounds like both you and Joe are interested in something more sandboxy, so it'll definitely happen, just not sure when, exactly. I'll be reading through some stuff to see what I may offer and how to work things into the setting.

(And I'd forgotten about the Kickstarter. Went ahead and got a digital copy of the setting book and the maps.)

That said, I think I am going to change some stuff about the setting this module will be taking place in. It won't affect anything, but will hopefully make things come more alive and present some opportunity for fun outside of the module. there's at least one point where you have a month of downtime and I don't see a bunch of adventurers sitting around twiddling their thumbs for that long. If any of you have ideas or things you'd like to do, (within reason. Should be something that can be done in a month or two of PBP time) let me know and I'll work it in. Heck, if you've got something you've always wanted to be part of a forested/moorish setting, tell me and we'll work it out.

In retrospect my previous post might've read a little harsh or passive-aggressive in tone even though that wasn't my intention. As much as I appreciate your willingness to be flexible, I'd rather that you run the type of game that you would be excited to run because it's more likely to turn into an eventual slog for you if you try to DM something that isn't grabbing you in a creative sense. Based on past conversation and posts it seems like you've been wanting to DM a homebrew sandbox game for some time now. I'd rather you DM what you want without worry about myself or anyone else. I can either deal and decide to play or gently decline and open the spot to someone who's looking for just that style of game; it doesn't have to be a big deal :)

Kassen Battle Maps

No worries. I didn't think you were being harsh or passive-aggressive. That said, I love worldbuilding so I would not mind running a game where I got to show off that passion of mine. :D

For now, I'm going to focus on running Dragon's Demand. I'm going to be tweaking a couple of things to, hopefully, make it more enjoyable. I'm not giving up on the sandbox, but I need more time to get that one rolling.

Male Probably human Computer Scientist 1/ Character Synthesizer 20/ Crazy 99

Alrighty, I'm getting close to having this ready, I think. I need to get a map of the kingdom done and I need to give some information about it

That said, I do want to encourage y'all to add your own stamp to this world. Feel free to come up with religions, nations, gods, towns, peoples, even other races. Even within the kingdom that I'm setting this in, there's plenty of whitespace to put your own mark on things. I want this to be fun and include all of you in making this world a little more alive. I know that all of you can come up with some fun stuff, and I look forward to seeing what y'all come up with.
