The Threefold Deaths of the Venerable Theseus

Game Master Mervikoth

Two years ago the Venerable Theseus sank beneath the waves under mysterious circumstances. Once devoted to the semi-divine Theseus, the ship was destroyed in a blast of malevolent energy unlike anything seen before. Five brave souls set off from Pridon's Hearth to discover the meaning behind the haunted wreck. Things thought long buried will rise again. Friendships will be tested. The limits of body, heart, soul, and mind will be passed. One death, and even two, may not be enough.

Lem leaps across the river and plows the troll into pulp.

So it's max damage for the first multiplier Weapon+Str/Power Attack+Thurl (12+11+2), then you double the second roll (2x(2d6+11+2)). You can roll the 2d6 twice, or just double the roll above. This would be (((6+5)+11+2)x2). The shocking is not multiplied (+6).

Total damage: 79, by my calculations. But, I'm not a mathemagician.

Still waiting on Arbaro, then the trolls will go.

Round 1

The troll drops from the trees, an arrow piercing his heart. But as the other two canopy trolls hoot and holler, you see the troll on the ground rise. The arrow in his chest is pushed out from the bleeding hole, the gap in his chest closing over with strands of flesh.
Trolls have regeneration 5 unless damaged by acid or fire.

The three canopy trolls swing from the trees and leap over the rocks and shoreline toward Arbaro, all alone.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20

The first leaps from the trees in a single swing and thuds against the floorboards in one bound. Critical jump. The second lunges from the beach and his claws and tail clatter on the wood, water sloshing over the sides and almost swamping the canoe. Finally the third, the hole in his chest already closed up from Arbaro's arrow, slams into the thwart, cracking it and sinking the canoe below the water.

They have the swarming ability, which lets them occupy the same square despite only being small, and gives them flanking bonuses when they do so.

Hooting and hollering like howler monkeys the three canopy trolls attempt to stay above the waterline without drowning. They'll do swim checks next turn when they try and attack.

The boat is swamped and underwater. Arbaro just has to make swim checks like before. You cannot stand in the center of the river, but the squares adjacent to the shoreline are shallow enough to give you firm footing.

Round 2

The two flood trolls on land are in awe at Lem's pulverizing of their friend. They leap into the water to activiate their Rain Regeneration. Same as above, but it only works in flowing water or precipitation. So Lem's kill counts, because it was on dry land; Bragoleb's... does not, because of the water in the boat from the rapids.

The northern troll spears at Roccavisk.
Spear: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 262d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 5) + 2 = 13

The troll in the boat with Thurl and Brag shudders back to life, his wounds closing up from the water. He claws at Thurl then Bragoleb, having dropped his spear when he was "dead."

You feel a roar more than you hear it. Her claws and teeth are as long as your arms, and her skin is wrinkled like a turtle's neck. Around her arm is a small, lizardlike creature with wings and fins that leaps into the water as she exits the waterfall.

Knowledge (local) 15:
This is a scrag troll. They're exactly like regular trolls (Large sized, claws and bite, regenerate 5 unless hit by fire or acid) but have a swim speed, and their regeneration only works in water.

The stench of the troll's cave seeps through even the smell of fresh water cascading down the falls. From the waterfall where the scrag troll emerged is a small, hollowed out cleft under the cataract. The usual filth of troll life lies scattered about, with indentions in the soft clay where the smaller trolls lay to sleep. In a filthy leather bag about to fall apart from age is 2044 gold pieces of various make. Just above eye level, in a crack in the rock with dried green dragon guano leaking off the side, is the nest of the tidepool dragon. Proudly displayed in the corner where the light catches it best is a collection of the dragon's prized possessions decorating a crudely painted porcelain doll: 3 rings, a headband, three necklaces, and a belt.

Thurl grounds his canoe and shambles onto the shore, sopping wet from the soaking the dragon gave him. Thurl assists in the recovery of the other canoe if needed and suggests, "Perhaps we should just carry the canoes past these rapids."

At the discovery of the dragon's stockpile of items, Thurl spies the Headband and says, "Alas, I would appreciate such a headband, but I already possess one. I would like to look into that Doll more however, It intrigues me." Thurl shows no more interest in any of the other items and lets the others distribute them as desired. Anything not wanted, he will keep in his pack to sell later.

Assuming nothing else of note happens this day...

That evening, Thurl makes special note of the rapids on his map of the river and notes in his journal the encounter with the trolls/dragon while his sips his tea and warms by the fire, drying his clothes. He spends a few minutes studying the doll closer as well, looking to check its craftsmanship and style, using his Ki to sharpen his mind and remember any slight details he might need.

The canoes dry out and you move them over the rapids. It takes a while, for even though Lem is strong he cannot carry two canoes by himself.

The surrounding area shows more signs of the trolls' activities, with bones scattered about above and below the rapids area. There is a line of low clefts in this area, which the trolls used to hunt both above and below the curve of the cliffs. The geography helped to hide them from animals and the occasional hunter out alone. Nothing else of value is found, but you know the animals and rangers in the area will appreciate the death of the trolls.

The doll is nothing magical or cursed. It is just a creepy looking doll.

The dragon is tiny sized, but could still make a nice scarf or taxidermied trophy.

You can walk beside the river, or just head due east. I'd say the river is easier to follow, but with a simple Survival check you can pinpoint true north, so there's basically 0% chance of getting lost out here.

Seeing Arbaro's suggestions, Roccavisk shakes her head. "There is no use for such a thing," she says. "As for the headband of social competence, this object is best suited for..." she scans all four of you. "Well, all of you. I wish there were four of them. As for walking, my tail can slither along quite fine. River or rock is of no matter to this fish."

She pauses with a look of curiosity before saying, "You do know that is what my moniker means, do you not? Roccavisk, Rockfish. It is a cruel label merfolk give those banished from the sea."

The old English mer- means "relating to the sea," hence mermaid = seawoman. Roccavisk = landfish. I thought it was clever.
