The Threefold Deaths of the Venerable Theseus

Game Master Mervikoth

Two years ago the Venerable Theseus sank beneath the waves under mysterious circumstances. Once devoted to the semi-divine Theseus, the ship was destroyed in a blast of malevolent energy unlike anything seen before. Five brave souls set off from Pridon's Hearth to discover the meaning behind the haunted wreck. Things thought long buried will rise again. Friendships will be tested. The limits of body, heart, soul, and mind will be passed. One death, and even two, may not be enough.

"There is a yearly coming-of-age singing ceremony every young merfolk must perform. When I sang, everyone laughed. -1 Perform (all). Except my family, who were so ashamed they had me banished and have not seen me since. I have spent time with other merfolk settlements, but those relationships always end the same; I never fit the shell they would have me wear. Mr. Pluploodeep was one such of those people who I thought I had a future with, but he was as rigid as the rest. One day I will tell you more of him, but not today."

She straightens up and looks out at the horizon ahead, saying "But remember, Bragoleb, I have no been sentenced to exile; they have been sentenced to stay at home."

You sail back for
Days: 6 + 2d6 ⇒ 6 + (4, 4) = 14
days and make berth at Pridon's Hearth after 2 weeks. You can sell treasure and make purchases here before setting out to your next destination.

The logbook shows that there were four individuals that sailed on the Venerable Theseus: Goyen Bigfeather, a female half-orc wizard who enjoys explosions and loud noises, Nineaxes Cinderhand, a male dwarf carpenter with criminal connections in almost every port, Slymr Tu Yu, a male elf soldier who served the Lantern Bearers all across Golarion, and his cousin Kamalani Kasindrin, a female half-elf who wrote the logbook. Kamalani claims to be a cleric of Theseus, though Theseus is a historical figure not known to have ever granted divine powers.

Over the past thirty years the logbook and ledger tells a story of their adventures together. They undid undead threats, stopped demon hordes, drove back goblin warparties, and even recovered lost cats from rats in basements of helpless villagers. Typical adventurer things.

But no single enemy seems to have stood at as undefeated or vowed to take revenge; the undead menace mentioned in the first entry was swiftly taken care of, the tomb purged of evil, and local residents (mentioned again many entries/years later) still happy and healthy with their communities. No villain's name pops up over and over, no place of evil seems to haunt them at every turn; only the four adventurers of the Venerable Theseus are the common thread their the whole logbook.

The final entry is dated 2 years ago, 4717, roughly the same time Roccavisk saw the ship destroyed in the open water. Again, no clues are obvious as to the cause of the ship's destruction. It was a normal day at sea, on a normal voyage to fight some normal evil.

No one has heard of the Venerable Theseus or its crew before in these parts of the world.

The river is too thin and shallow to carry Serenity, unfortunately. But the Rainrush halflings offer you two of their canoes to take upriver. Two of you can fit into one canoe. Should you encounter any dangers on the river, one of you will need to keep the boat steady to keep from tipping over. An Acrobatics check as a free action, around DC 8. Unless a monster is tipping you over, or there are rough rapids, which will make it higher.

Once you have rested in town and made your purchases/sold unwanted treasure, you are ready to get into your canoe and head off upriver.

Two to a boat, Roccavisk will swim in the water.

As soon as Thurl knows the boat situation, he tells the rest of the group, ”Shall we return the Serenity to the Rainrushes? I so appreciate their generosity but we have accumulated enough wealth to purchase a boat if we have need.”

Well, this begs a question. How well off are the Rainrushes?

Thurl goes about selling the equipment that they have gathered on their voyage, visiting Forthingr and Stonewall to sell the armor and weapons, Mirya Oyin for their miscellaneous items and perhaps Banker Valdra would be interested in the diamond.

Thurl asks around to see if there are any maps of the route they wish to take available. He also stops by and picks up what ever literature Ood would be willing to part with about anything, having wished he had a new book to read on the previous trip. He also searches out for a journal to gather his notes from the return trip from the wreck and continue his documentation of their quest.

I was realizing that Deific Obedience requires Thurl to read part of a book he has never read before every morning so he needs some new reading material.

Yes you can retrain a skill if you want.

The Rainrushes are not wealthy folk, but they do have many boats. They make one or two every year. It's like that gardener friend that has a million tomatoes and just gives them to you because they can't eat them all.

The river is not well mapped. The Shattered Range has patchy paths and trails around the Swaying Lantern, but most of the maps are on the eastern side of the pass. However, you know that with your survival skills and knowledge of the natural world, finding the place will not be difficult. You'll get there, don't worry about getting lost.

Thurl meets back with the others, having no need of supplies aside from food and things he has already selected. I couldn’t find any good maps of the area we will be journeying into, but I think with our knowledge and skills, we should be able to find our way. I will try to make a rough map of our route for future use. Shall we set out at first light?”

I think it's a case-by-case basis, both for each character and each spell/ability/feat. Feel free to do what feels best/natural for you character.

You set off upriver. After a few days, (I'm too tired to give colorful descriptions.) you come across some rapids. Since you are canoeing against the current, the going will be difficult, but not impossible. You can stay in the rafts and attempt to power over them, or you can carry them over land. The brush around the river is thick and full of briers and thorns.

Str for front seat, Dex for back seat (to power through and to steer). I can't think of an applicable skill other than Profession (sailing) or something. If you carry the canoe, your vision will be limited and obviously you will be burdened.

Map updated. I'll split the canoes into individual image files for better manipulation tomorrow.

The next level of the cataracts is wider; the rocks even provide a small opening just wide enough for your canoe to fit through without scraping. You make it up to the next level without any checks required.

At the next level, the waters have calmed some, but the river takes a bend to the right around a cluster of boulders and trees. A clearing in the rocks lies directly north of you, the mud churned and scored from animals coming here to drink.

Arbaro and Thurl:
You two see movement and flickering eyes in the trees to the north and the peninsula-esque thing to your SE. Humanoids, green and furred to the north, mottle blue and big to the southeast.

When they make it to the next level of the rapids, Thurl spots the humanoids and wracks dredges up as many details from his brain as possible.

Knowledge (local) 18:
These are both some form of troll. The green furred ones are canopy trolls; they are lithe climbers and are barely more intelligent than animals. They have poison stingers that sicken their prey as they grapple them into submission. They are also small sized.

The blue ones are flood trolls. They are medium sized but can wield Large weapons with ease. They favor flowing waters (like rivers) because their regeneration does not work unless they are touching flowing water.

Both trolls have regeneration 5 (unless damaged by acid or fire), darkvision, and either a climb or swim speed, respectively.

Flood trolls speak Giant, while canopy trolls do not speak but understand Giant.

The creatures see you but say nothing. The blue ones wield weapons while the green ones hand from the trees.

Map updated.

It would seem the description of the trolls does not match the artwork. I have enlarged the pictures on the left side of the map for better viewing. The bottom picture is the Flood Troll (which is described in-text as Blue) and the top picture is the Canopy Troll (described as green). The images... are the exact opposite color scheme. The pictures and descriptions are both from the same official source.

This is why communication (and quality editorial oversight) is important, children.
