At some point before today
"Ms. Syrinx, I'm sorry to hear about your families misfortunes. Though it seems you carry on the good work they so desperatly wished to achieve. I have a proposition for you and I hear you may be the perfect one for the job. I need some assistance with a few tasks at the Gala and in exchange I can ensure you can gain admittance to the event. Of course, there will be pay involved. More importantly though, not only will you be serving my interests, but this will provide you the opportunity to make contacts and meet influential parties that could be of use to you in the future. I hope you can meet me at the designated location promptly at 8:00pm this Oathday."

"Ms. Clement, I've heard the support you and your family have given to the Princess during these historical times. I actually have an opportunity whereby you may get a chance to meet the Princess in person. As I'm sure you are aware the Exaltation Gala is right around the corner and for everyone in Taldor that is anyone, this is the place to be. I need some assistance with a few tasks at the Gala and in exchange I can ensure you can gain admittance to the event. Furthermore, it is my hope that with your aid, we might be able to assist in bringing about the necessary change needed to drag Taldor from the continued and extended decay that it has faced for so long. I hope you can meet with me at the designated location promptly at 8:00pm this Oathday."
Included is a map that shows the location of a cafe several blocks from the senate building.
"Mr. Alexius Brune, The work you have done for some mutual friends has brought me to write to you. I applaud you for your perseverance while trying to survive the cards that life has dealt you. However, I feel that you, and in fact, Taldor could be so much more. It is my hope that you might consider assisting me in working toward bringing change to Taldor. I need some assistance with a few tasks at the Gala, some tasks of which I feel you would be particularly adept, and in exchange I can ensure you can gain admittance to the event. This would be a wonderful opportunity, not only to assist me in bringing about a brighter future for all of Taldor, but to give you the opportunity to make contacts and meet influential parties that could potentially be of use to you in the future. I hope you can meet with me at the designated location promptly at 8:00pm this Oathday."

"Mr. Merosett, I've recieved some of your ever so useful 'products' that you sell on the market. I believe you and I share a common goal in bringing ending the stagnation and decay that has ruled over Taldor for far to long. I need some assistance with a few tasks at the Gala and in exchange I can ensure you can gain admittance to the event. This would be a wonderful opportunity, not only to assist me in bringing about a brighter future for all of Taldor, but to give you the opportunity to make contacts and meet influential parties that could be of use to you in your endeavors. I hope you can meet with me at the designated location promptly at 8:00pm this Oathday."

"My dear brother, I've hoped to keep you seperate from these matters, but I need your assistance. As you may be aware, our pretentious brother seeks to keep Taldor stuck, decaying in the past. While our nation has such a rich history that I would never wish to erase, I feel that if we don't change and adapt our nation may fall to ruin. It is my hope that you might consider assisting me in working to bring change in Taldor for a brighter future for us all. I need some assistance with a few tasks at the Gala and in exchange I can ensure you can gain admittance to the event. As you know, everyone who is anyone will be at the Gala. This would be a wonderful opportunity, not only to assist me in bring about a better Taldor, but to give you the opportunity to make contacts and meet influential parties that I know could be of use to you in the future. I hope you can meet with me at the designated location promptly at 8:00pm this Oathday."

"Alessand, I've heard of some of the recent strife you have faced in your charitable work. I applaud you for your perseverance in the face of such difficulties and commend the righteous path you walk in tending to the needy. It is my hope that you might consider assisting me in working to bring change in Taldor for a brighter future for us all. I have an opportunity for you to not only assist me in working toward a better Taldor, but to give you the opportunity to make contacts and meet influential parties that could be of use to you in the future. Oathday, 1st of Pharast, 4718
Oppara is Taldor's thriving capital—a shining monument to the grandeur and majesty once common to the entire Taldan empire. Seated on the black cliffs of the River Porthmos in Opparos Prefecture, Oppara bears all the gravitas and extravagance that 6,000 years of history have conferred upon it. The roofs and domes of Oppara were once plated with gold, earning it the nickname "the Gilded City," and though past rulers stripped the gold away long ago to pay for the empire's follies, the wealth and decadence of Taldor's capital keep the spirit of that name alive.
Oppara serves as Taldor's primary trade center, with traffic coming both from Taldor's interior via the River Porthmos and from the steady stream of international vessels sailing in from the Inner Sea. It is also the home of Taldor's government, hosting both the Imperial Palace of the grand prince and the polished marble halls of the senate. As the economic and political hub of Taldor, Oppara is the beating heart of the empire and the center of Taldan culture. Twin harbors provide goods to the city’s thriving marketplaces and restaurants, and they're often so crammed with ships that the river cannot be seen. Public fountains and marble statues can be found at many major crossroads and plazas. Columned villas and grandiose temples from every age of Taldor's history line the streets, and even the humbler merchant districts are holdovers from an unparalleled age of glory. Most of Oppara's buildings are made of carved stone, and the roads are paved with either intricate mosaics or well-fitted cobblestones. Much of the city's advanced public works have withstood the test of time, including its labyrinthine sewer system and the network of stone gutters that keep the streets clear of summer rain. The Grand Bridge of the Empire, emerging from the southeastern shore of the city's heart to cross the massive Porthmos, remains one of the most ambitious and impressive engineering marvels in the Inner Sea. Two magically animated lion sculptures stand sentinel atop Oppara's main gate, offering a glimpse into the greatness that currently lies dormant within the empire. At night, the city is lit with tens of thousands of lanterns, causing it to shine like a beacon in the darkness.
Every year, the empire of Taldor celebrates the Grand Day of Exaltation. On this prestigious day, the Grand Prince is empowered to elevate a commoner to the ranks of nobility. The event itself is the embodiment of formality, with the elevated commoner selected months or years in advance. What makes the day truly special is that the preceding week is a holiday throughout the empire. Nobles, senators, and hopeful petitioners fill the capital city of Oppara for galas, performances, and parades. To the nobility, the week before the Grand Day of Exaltation is a time to conduct important business deals, issue noble proclamations, and hold private parties. With so many prominent politicians arriving from across the empire, the Taldan senate uses Exaltation Week to vote on matters of nationwide importance.
Visitors flock to Oppara in the days leading up to the Grand Day of Exaltation. The populace of the city doubles during this time, making Oppara larger than any other city in the Inner Sea region, save Absalom. The self-importance of the already prideful Taldan people swells in equal measure. Street vendors sell traditional Taldan foods—anchovy skewers, anglebobs, canal crossings, clamguards, jubilee pie, honeyflake, long wine, yonder tarts, and more—including regional delicacies from separated provinces such as Andoran mince and Chelish raven cake. Family banners and provincial flags drape the sides of most buildings, with merchants hawking heraldry ranging from replica banners of the old Armies of Exploration to wooden swords and handheld Taldan flags for children. Taverns offer themed drink and food, with varying bars adopting well-known nobles from the long history of the empire as their mascot or self-declared patron.
Alongside all the pomp and circumstance filling Oppara is a noteworthy moment in history: the imperial senate is poised to hold a historic vote to end primogeniture. The potential end of the millennia-standing law of succession is the talk of the town. Streets and taverns are abuzz with conversations; some wish to see the law thrown down to pave a way for Princess Eutropia to ascend to the throne, while hardliners (especially elder nobles) believe the vote to be another wound in the great history of the empire, allowing not only the rabble-rousing Eutropia to inherit family power, but every ill-deserving woman. Regardless of the outcome, both sides of the debate agree that life will go on, and despite the serious ramifications of primogeniture's potential end, the streets of Oppara hold no signs of unrest during the jubilant celebrations of the Grand Day of Exaltation.
Each of you has another reason to be excited for the Grand Day of Exaltation. You have each been contacted by Lady Martella Lotheed. She has contacted you to serve as her agents at the Grand Day of Exaltation Gala at the senate building. Martella has asked that each of you meet with her the evening before the Exaltation Gala to familiarize yourselves with your fellow agents, get details on the missions and to ask any questions you may have. The meetup is to take place at a small cafe several blocks from the senate building.
Before your meeting, you may use Diplomacy, Knowledge (local), or Knowledge (nobility) to make checks to learn more about your employer and the political scene in Oppara. Each of you may roll one time each for any or all of the given subjects. The available subjects are: the Grand Day of Exaltation, Grand Prince Stavian III, Martella Lotheed, and Princess Eutropia.
You may also each attempt a DC 15 Diplomacy check to gather information and hear a rumor that is currently circling throughout Oppara.
Adrian Merosett
Adrian sits sipping a cup of wine as he rereads the letter before him. It is addressed to him and signed by Martella Lotheed -- a woman he knows more by reputation than by acquaintance. He sets down his chalice and runs a hand through his hair, sighing as he does so. There was no way he could pass up an opportunity like this. The Gala at the senate building was quite possibly the biggest social event of the year, and the impending primogeniture vote was going to make this potentially one of the most important events in the long history of Taldor. Though he is hesitant to get so directly involved in the subterfuge surrounding the event -- "assistance with a few tasks", as the Lady Lotheed had put it -- Adrian knew that Martella was absolutely right about the potential benefits of networking at the Gala. He also knew that things like this never came without strings attached.
Besides, Adrian thought, he couldn't stay out of things forever. The senate vote was going to be pivotal. If there was some way for him to help tip the scales in favor of a brighter future for Taldor, how could he refuse?
His mind made up, Adrian quickly dresses to go out: something fashionable, but relatively modest (by noble standards, anyway). Satisfied with his appearance, he departs for the cafe. He walks at a steady pace through the streets of Oppara, stopping and chatting with a few acquaintances along the way. He arrives at the specified cafe a few minutes early and takes a moment to survey the street outside before entering.

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to take 10 on these sorts of knowledge checks? I'm fine with rolling (and I'll do so below just in case), but I'd also be fine with straight 20s on them. Being an information guy has its perks. :P

This is odd. Most Nobles chafe at working with common folk like me. Alessand thinks as he reads the letter that was delivered to the Basilica of Aroden while he was doing some work on the upper levels. Father Basri was kind enough to hand him the letter.
Well, this is the chance to expand the Narrows to a true neighborhood. Get rid of the criminals, and make something of a true neighborhood. Let's give it a shot. He thinks.
With that, he hurredly eats his meager meal, picks up his a couple loaves of bread to break, and hides his tools within the basilica. He goes to the narrows to deliver it to a poor woman who had been sick for a week or so, making sure her children were fed, and ensuring that her fever was tended. "It's not much, but this should help you feel a bit better." As he prepares a rag of cool, clean water he picked up on his way into the narrows.
While in the narrows, he asks around if anyone else has heard of Lady Lotheed, as well as near the Basilica. She has certainly heard of him, and he knows of her, but the reasons why she would choose him on this day seem odd.
Before dusk, he heads back to the basilica for "prayers." He keeps his carpentry clothes on because, well, they are his better clothes. Besides, walking the Narrows after dark got him mugged last time. From there, Senate Hill and a cafe...

Ana is surprised, but delighted, when one of her servants brings her Lady Martella Lotheed's missive. Ha! An invitation to the Exaltation Gala - and I don't even have to depend on mother to get in! This is perfect. Especially since I'm not so certain that mother would allow me to accompany her in any case...I know she thinks I'm imprudent in flaunting my political opinions. If she only knew... Folding up the letter and tucking it into one of the inside pockets of her tunic, Ana buckles on her trusty blade and departs by the back gate of her mother's manor Oppara manor, trusting to the shadows and her knowledge of the servants' movements to avoid detection.
Once on the street, she racks her brain for any information about the subjects of this mysterious missive. She also pauses on her way through the streets to chat with a few "random" shopkeepers and merchants of repute - Sarenites one and all, though few know it. Dressed in leather breeches and a loose tunic, she hopes that she can pass herself off as a bravo or sellsword at a casual glance.

early in the day Alex sits at one of the many tables throughout the thieves guild and stares at the request that reached him only a day or so ago. "It's probably legit, seeing as it came through the guild. Oh well might as well check it out." Alex asks around the guild for any helpful info before hitting the streets in his entertainers outfit which consists of black trousers, a dark blue tunic, a cloak made up of strips of black and royal blue cloth, various clownish makeup covering his face, and a jester style hat.
Slowly making his way to the designated cafe, Alex keeps his eyes open and a bright smile on his face. He sets up just down the block from the cafe, in front of a clothing store of some sort, about three hours before 8 and begins a basic act of juggling, card tricks, and slight of hand, mixed with some jokes and stories to keep people entertained. As time goes by he keeps track of everyone going in and out of the cafe. Unless they do anything to hide themselves Alex recognizes Adrian and Alessand entering the building which makes him feel slightly better about this meeting. At exactly 8pm he takes his bows, puts his hood up against the cold, and heads to a "nearby cafe for some food".

Caspian finds himself oddly delighted to have received a letter from his sister and her offer intrigues him. Having waited in vain for his invitation to the gala, Probably just sent it all the way out to Lotheedar and Bartelby ignored it..., having his sister turn up with a way in is too good an opportunity to miss.
Never-the-less, with appearances to keep up, he ensures that he arrives a few minutes late! It wouldn't do to seem too eager.

Cyrene Syrinx
Cyrene rises for the morning, wincing a little as she sits up, pressing a hand against her ribs. The last night had been a little more vigorous than she had liked, and one loudmouth had gotten a little too close to her client, thinking that Cyrene was little more than just a pretty face.
Rolling out of bed, Cyrene washes her hair intensively with liberal use of her Create Water cantrip, before glancing in the mirror. Truthfully, she didn't exactly look like a typical bodyguard. She wasn't obviously muscled, or towered over anyone, but she did know how to blend into a crowd. That was what her employers prized, the ability to offer unseen or invisible protection, so her clients could wander without appearing to be worried or concerned with obvious protection. The downside of course, she reflected wryly, was that she got hit more often than a more traditional bodyguard.
Absently wondering if a few tattoo's wouldn't go amiss, Cyrene sits, and reads through the letter that had been dropped off while she was out. It was simple, and to the point, but it still contained a tremendous opportunity. Cyrene didn't know as much about Lady Martella as she would like, but it was still work in a field that she specialized in, and Cyrene was always happen to work on business relationships within that area. Even if things didn't work out, the exposure would hopefully open herself up to a wider range of clients.
Quietly pleased with the opportunity, Cyrene dresses, taking care to dress professionally and practically, discarding any flowing gowns for dark coloured leather, not quite as formal as some of the clothing her clients might wear, but formal enough for a bodyguard. Strapping on her sword, Cyrene heads out to the Gala.
At precisely 8PM, Cyrene arrives on time, giving the cafe a quick once over before entering. Old habits died hard, and she disliked being obvious or predictable. With the evening bringing with it dim light, Cyrene blended into the shadows with her Night Hunter ability, becoming nearly invisible as she slipped through the entrance, and then appraised the crowd.

@Adrian You are welcome to take 10 on these knowledge checks.
On your way to the cafe you come across an acquaintance who stops you and notes "Ah, Adrian! Remember, I had told you about Duke Talbot’s reception this week. Well, I got to see Mr. Smiles there, it was the one where Baronet Jivarus got into a row with the servant, and that jester is delightful. Whimsical and biting all at once, and such grace. A tad off-putting, though.” Moments later the man's eldest son comes to retrieve him to purchase some item and the man politely excuses himself.
You know the Grand Day of Exaltation is the one day every year when the emperor can elevate a commoner of unusual skill or service to the ranks of nobility. Because people travel from all over the empire to witness the exaltation, many balls and political events take place in the preceding week, and the senate usually votes on matters of national importance immediately beforehand. This year’s noble-to-be is a wide-eyed weaver from the village of Breezy Creek, whose beautiful tapestries have adorned the royal palace and many other royal homes for a decade.
You also know Grand Prince Stavian III is the emperor of Taldor. Grand Prince Stavian III has no male heir, and he has refused to have any further children since the tragic death of his only son, Carrius, in a riding accident 20 years ago. With the emperor getting on in years, some people worry how this will affect succession. The emperor has made no secret of his disdain for Princess Eutropia’s social crusades, especially her efforts to overturn primogeniture so she can inherit the throne, but he has been uncharacteristically quiet about it this past year. Rumors abound that his health is slipping and he has accepted her efforts.
You know that the wealthy Lotheed family has been a strong supporter of the Stavians for almost 100 years. They
have a long family tradition of arcane magic, adding to their wealth and prestige. Martella is the black sheep of her family, being a result of an extramarital dalliance with a Qadiran diplomat. She lacks her family’s gift for magic as well, adding to their resentment. Despite her family’s disdain, Martella still commands some wealth and has extensive contacts, having attended the Sinora Academia, Taldor’s most exclusive girls’ school.
You also know Princess Eutropia is the adult daughter of Grand Prince Stavian III and has a scandalous reputation for making trouble and fighting in the streets. Eutropia is a social reformer, eager to establish schools and other public resources for the poor, and remove political or family restrictions for women and various minorities. Rumors have circulated for a decade that her ultimate goal is to overturn primogeniture, Taldor’s ancient law, stating that only male heirs may inherit the Lion Throne and become the first empress of Taldor. The princess’s reputation for “fighting in the streets” largely hails from her skill as a fencer, a sport she excelled at during her schooling at the Sinora Academia. Many times in her twenties she matched blades with chauvinistic politicians who would otherwise refuse to let her speak or act within political circles, and those early public duels helped her win unexpected support for her later social reforms as well as a reputation as an impolite, unladylike brute.
As you stop to tend to the sickly woman she thanks you for your aid and tells you a bit of information "My uncle is in the Lion Blades, and he says the Qadirans are planning to kidnap Princess Eutropia during the Exaltation Gala to ransom!" She starts coughing loudly, still not fully recovered, and excuses herself to let you get on with your day.

Alex is the first to arrive at the cafe, setting up down the block to do a little performance. His routine goes over pretty well and he draws a bit of a crowd, while some people throw some coins in a sack he has set out.
Alex gains 2 gp worth of coin
There are several people who enter and leave the cafe until about 7:30. Alex makes note of a woman heading into the cafe with flowing brown hair and tanned skin. She wears a short, but lavish, white dress with tanner leather pants underneath. Over the dress is a leather vest of deep purple. A long, vibrant yellow veil covers her head. As Alex watches her walk toward the cafe, she takes note and gives him a slight nod before entering the building.
Adrian arrives next, shortly before 8 and notices Alex packing up and heading toward the cafe as well. Not long after Alessand and Anabella arrive, followed by Cyrene right on time.
As you filter in you see the establishment to be primarily empty except for Lady Lotheed and a young woman behind the counter, who you surmise is the proprietor of the establishment. Long, golden beams of the setting sun dance through the cafe’s smoky interior, highlighting breads, cheeses, and wine bottles behind the only counter. Martella sips casually from a steaming mug. A hand-sized brass cricket buzzes quietly on the tabletop beside her.
As you enter she greets you individually. Even though you may have never met her, she seems to know you. She offers you each a seat "I’m so pleased you could join me this evening,” she begins. “Please order whatever you like; the fig jam is particularly lovely here. And feel free to speak candidly. I’ve taken measures to ensure our privacy.”
As you take a seat and place your orders another man enters the tavern. He has a bit of a resemblance to Lady Lotheed, but with a bit lighter complexion. As he enters she smirks at the man and rolls her eyes "Glad you could join us Caspian, I see you had to maintain your reputation of being fashionably late."
With everyone gathered Lady Lotheed sets her mug down and stands to do a slight curtsy to you all "I am Martella Lotheed. Many of you may not know me, but I've all asked you here tonight to be of assistance, but more than that to help Taldor as a whole. Before we get too deep into things, please introduce yourselves so that we can all become the greatest of friends."

Alessand
Before:. Alessand tends and helps the woman to her bed. He hopes that her words are untrue.
Arriving, before entering, Alessand takes care to cast Detect Magic.
This is a much nicer cafe than Alessand has ever been to in the city.
"Greetings to everyone. I am Alessand, a humble Carpenter and humble servant.... His voice trails off. He recognizes Alex and Anabella, but of the others he is wary. He quickly changes the subject.
"Why meet in such a posh place? It's not like there aren't a hundred other establishments that we could find a quiet room in. The food seems a bit... Expensive.
Alessand isn't being insulting, he just isn't used to money.
Caspian Lotheed
As you take a seat and place your orders another man enters the tavern. He has a bit of a resemblance to Lady Lotheed, but with a bit lighter complexion. As he enters she smirks at the man and rolls her eyes "Glad you could join us Caspian, I see you had to maintain your reputation of being fashionably late."
Caspian matches his sister smirk for smirk before leaning in to kiss her on the cheek. "But what are we without our reputation sister dearest?" He asks, before bowing to each member of the assembled company and (if allowed) taking the hand of each lady present and pressing a light kiss to it.
"Charmed to meet you all. Caspian Lotheed, duellist of some small reknown and most definitely not a wizard. As some members of my family never cease to remind me. It is a pleasure to meet you all. I assume you've all received an invitation from my sister?"
He exchanges a more familiar nod to Adrian before seating himself and dealing with Alessand's question, which he caught on his way up.
"As posh places go sir, this is quiet. Not so common that people such as us would look out of place, but not truly fashionable either - meaning those of us who might be recognised are less likely to be so. It's a good choice."
Lounging in his chair Caspian presents a dashing figure. Well tailored clothes combined with a mop of hair artfully tousled show he is a man of money, but the thin scars on his face, callused hands and the unusual sword strapped to his side all suggest that this is no mere dandy. His smile is open and engaging.
Anabella Sitotu Clement
Ana nods greetings to those she's met, even if only briefly, and smiles warmly at Alessand. "I know Alessand from my charitable work - he's a good man, and I'm glad you've brought him into this, Lady Lotheed," she says with a smile. "For those of you who don't know me, I'm Lady Anabella Clement - daughter of Senator Clement, here in Oppara. I've been traveling out of Taldor for the last couple of years, but I'm excited to be back, and eager to get to work now."
Knowledge (Local) re: Lady Morilla: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 Or just 20 if K (Nobility) is more appropriate.
Alessand
Alessand nods at Caspian. "I see, please forgive me, I do a great deal of charity work for the Church of Abadar. I tend to a small flock in the narrows, trying to help the poor where I can. It was not meant as any sort of insult, good sir. I have no interest in picking a fight with a proper duelist, being beaten and having the few alms and foods stolen from me every once in a while is quite enough for me."
Alessand is trying to portray a lay priest here, perhaps even an Adept NPC class. He is terribly unsure of what to expect. Once Anabella speaks for him, he brightens a bit.
"It is good to see you again, Anabella. Oppara was a bit dimmer without your presence. You were sorely missed "
Alexius Brune
Alex stands and gives an overly elaborate, and obviously staged, bow with a broad smile, "It seems to be my turn, My name is Alexius Brune though my colleagues simply refer to me as the Fool. I specialize in the procurement of items and information from those who don't deserve them." Brefly making eye contact with those in the group he knows, Alex gives them a quick wink before sitting back down.
Adrian probably recognizes this as the act that Alex puts on with new contacts, before he gets comfortable enough with them to act like himself. While Alessand should recognize the fact that this sounds very different from the man he knows.
Alex is normally quick to laugh and not afraid to curse up a storm and act irreverent.
Caspian Lotheed
"Lady Clement, of course. Ppl are is graced to have you back in its fair arms." Caspian replies, "Pray, is your father well?"
Adrian Merosett
Adrian nods in turn at the others as they introduce themselves. He arches an eyebrow at the carpenter's hesitation and changing of the subject, but simply makes a mental note of it and says nothing more about it. He also smiles ever so slightly at Alex's self-introduction. Adrian didn't know the man that well, but he'd met Alex enough to have seen his actual personality peek through a few times.
Adrian stands to make his own introduction at an appropriate moment. "I believe I may have met most of you at one point or another, but be that as it may..." He makes obviously well-practiced bow to the assembled group. "It's a pleasure to meet you all. I am Adrian Merosett, eldest son of the Merosett family, student of the arcane arts. I also dabble in a few other things here and there." He sits back down. "Quite an interesting array of individuals. I can't wait to hear what sort of Lotheed intrigue the Lady Martella would involve us in." He smiles broadly as he speaks, his voice tinged with humor, a sparkle of mischief apparent in his eyes.
Anabella Sitotu Clement
Ana smiles lightly at Caspian. "He is well, Lord Lotheed. As usual, he prefers to keep to his study and let my mother run the family's business - but that's nothing new!" She laughs warmly.
Alessand
At the way Alex behaved, Alessand looks at him awkwardly for a moment, then, thinking better if revealing others' secrets, given his own, he takes a seat at the table after simply asking for a small glass of water.
Carpentry is hard work, but good for the soul. Helps build things. So, Lady Lotheed, what are you trying to build? If you are here to help with work programs to alleviate poverty in the Narrows, I am all for it. That will help make the construction that much more sturdy, too., Maybe encourage an actual guard patrol..
He smiles, sipping his water. He is shocked to see ice in it, marveling for but a moment, he continues.
But, I suspect, given our very different ways of life, that you have something else in mind for us. While I would love to have the chance to speak with someone about my concerns, there is always a price to pay for access. What's the price?
I am also concerned that you didn't choose to include your brother in these plans. Is there no familial loyalty in that house?! Alessand thinks to himself.
Cyrene Syrinx
Cyrene glances at everyone present, slipping off her coat and placing it against the back of her chair, noticing several of the company were already linked with the nobility. Even though her house same was disgraced, it was still vaguely comforting to be their presence, a reminder of simpler and easier years. When it comes to her turn to speak, she clears her throat softly and nods at everyone present.
"My name is Cyrene, Cyrene Syrinx. Some of you might have known my parents, but not yet me. I'm a political bodyguard, defending, protecting, and supporting my clients. Maybe not exactly glamorous, but it does pay the bills" she remarks, trailing off slightly, before smiling again.
"Its indeed wonderful to meet you all tonight, but I wonder what it is that has brought several different individuals together under one table. Lady Lotheed, could you perhaps update us?"
Cyrene cuts a slim figure. Long hours, tending towards nighttime work has left her skin a little paler than usual. She is wearing a sleeveless top, the better to keep her arms free, and long black leggings. It was clear that she favored dark colored attire, and the scimitar fastened to her hip looked practical rather than decorative. In contrast to some of the group who possessed easy smiles, Cyrene keeps her face solemn and focused on the topics of conversation at hand.
Caspian Lotheed
"Why yes, sister dearest." Caspian adds his voice to the group seeking answers. "Your note was delightfully vague, perhaps we could be graced with some concrete information? If you so deign of course!" He offers a seated bow, waggling his eyebrows as he does.
GM Dak
In 4714 AR, Lady Gloriana abandoned her faltering plans to revive Taldor through increased participation in the Pathfinder Society and instead formed an independent organization for young nobles across Avistan, calling it the Sovereign Court.
Ever a patriot, Lady Gloriana has thrown her support behind Princess Eutropia Stavian in her bid to modernise Taldor and bring much needed social reforms to the nation.
Martella smiles as she listens to the various introductions and when the inquiries start her smile only grows wider "Well yes, my new friends, as I mentioned in my letter there is a potential for great change in Taldor. Change that I feel will benefit not only each of you, but the entire empire. However, I prefer to remove as much of Desna's influence from the equation and work toward ensuring that change can arrive."
She looks you each in the eye gauging your interest before continuing "As luck would have it, I've obtained a means of access to the Exaltation Gala. As you may know, this is the social event of the year. However, more importantly, the senate will be voting on the future of primogeniture. I have some tasks that I am hoping you all will be able to assist me with to ensure that vote passes."
From a pouch at her waist she pulls out some badges, those of you familiar with the senate at all note they are senatorial aid badges. "Assuming you are interested in serving as my agents during the Gala you will each receive one of these badges. They will grant you entry to the event. Of course, I trust your activities won’t occupy your entire evening, so by all means, enjoy the party and make friends. This is an excellent opportunity for you to begin your own political ambitions or find support for the causes you hold dear."
Setting the badges down she takes a sip from her mug before she continues "As I'm sure the very next questions will be "What are these tasks?" Let me lay them out for you."
Taking some time she describes the various things she would like assistance with.
NOTE - The below details the most likely skills involved to be successful at a task. This doesn't mean you can't try something else if it makes sense.
Aide: Martella legitimately needs a senatorial aide as both a cover for her other false aides and to run communications between allied politicians. This is by far the easiest job available, but also the most time-consuming, requiring you to run messages between various politicians. Navigating the crowded senate floor to deliver messages quickly requires a successful Escape Artist or combat maneuver check.
Discovery: Martella is confident Eutropia has gathered the votes necessary for her cause, but she hates loose ends. She tasks you with uncovering the true dedication of two senators: Duke
Centimus and Countess Abrielle Pace. It is unknown if either supports Eutropia’s bid to end primogeniture, and while their votes will be apparent after the senate convenes, Martella wants you to discover their positions in advance, as well as the reasons each noble holds that position. Divining each noble’s motivations requires a successful Sense Motive or Perception check after at least one member of the party has put the noble at ease with one or more successful Influence checks.
Fraud: Martella needs to discredit a few prominent senators backing primogeniture - not necessarily to sway their votes, but to undercut their influence after the vote. You must create a scandal surrounding one of the major opponents to the repeal of primogeniture. Doing so requires first identifying an opponent, either with a successful Sense Motive check or by coordinating with another agent, and then by spreading rumors with
a successful Bluff check and manufacturing or co opting damning evidence on the fly with a successful Linguistics check.
Politicking: The orchestrations of Eutropia, Glorianna Morilla, and Martella Lotheed have swayed a great number of reluctant senators, and Lady Lotheed requires a vast web of influence to maintain that. To that end, she would like you to make a strong impression on Baron Nicolaus Okerra and remind him of certain debts he owes her. While Baron Nicolaus Okerra isn’t a senator, his war record and general popularity make him an influential figure — one whose reputation helped sway a number of otherwise neutral votes. You can accomplish this task by successfully influencing the baron, or by succeeding at two Intimidate checks to browbeat him.
Sabotage: Some senators are too powerful or stubborn for you to influence their votes, but that doesn’t mean they’re beyond some petty revenge. Martella would like to exact some retribution against her more powerful half-brother, who has contributed a large bottle of rare, 150-year-old red wine from family holdings in the Opparos province, now held in the senate’s kitchens. Martella will provide a single syringe filled with a putrefying agent to render the wine embarrassingly undrinkable but warns you not to steal the bottle and to conceal any signs of tampering; it must be drunk at dinner and appear to be of terrible quality or — even more scandalously — a forgery. Of course, she notes, that no one would actually get hurt by this, just her half-brothers reputation. Recognizing the correct bottle in the crowded kitchen requires a successful Appraise check or Knowledge (nobility) check, while injecting the putrefying agent without leaving any trace of tampering requires a successful Disable Device check.
Spy: Martella needs someone to keep tabs on political rivals and update her if they change their tactics, most notably High Strategos Maxillar Pythareus. You must stay close to the military commander, watching for unusual behavior or listening for snippets of conversation, and warn her if he takes any unusual
actions, all while remaining unobtrusive. Spying requires a total of three successful Perception or Sense Motive checks, but to approach close enough to attempt one of these checks while remaining unnoticed requires you to first succeed a Disguise or Stealth check.
Theft: To liberate stolen artifacts and further undermine the influence of the recently disgraced Earl Calhadion Vernisant, Martella would like to see some of the historical artifacts that the earl donated to the senate vanish from the Arcade
of Triumphs before it is unveiled prior to the evening’s vote. Martella indicates you will receive a finders fee for liberating the stolen item as they are returned to the museum from where it came. The artifacts aren’t secured; the senate assumes anyone sophisticated enough to attended this crowded gala would never dream of stealing anything on public display. Stealing any single curio from Martella’s list requires a successful Sleight of Hand skill check. Martella’s list mentions five items — a buckler, a dagger, a fan, a journal, and a spyglass. She notes that she needs only three of them to go missing to disgrace the earl, but if all of the items could be liberated the museum would be extremely grateful.
After she describes the various things she needs assistance with she finishes by saying. "“Overall, tomorrow night promises to be a historic evening, but an evening of work nonetheless. And in the sort of work you’re embarking upon, the line that divides success and failure is drawn by the people you know. Of course, I'm not expecting you to just help me out of the kindness of your heart. I will compensate you each 150 gold lions if you complete your tasks, to be paid several days after the gala. I’m counting on you to support one another to ensure success and discretion. If you need assistance, kindly ask for it. If your assistance is required, give it. And if I’m to be blunt, I would like just once in my adult life to simply enjoy a gala I attend, rather than scamper about with clandestine busywork. If you all complete your work without need of me to clean anything up, I will happily double my promised fee."
She looks at you each expectantly and adds one last thing "Additionally, I will provide you each with enough gold to purchase a proper courtier's outfit so you fit in."
This would be 30 gold. If you like you can spend the extra 45 gold to purchase a proper nobles outfit.
Alexius Brune
By the end of Martella's explanation Alex's face has morphed into one of barely concealed excitement, utterly shattering his previous professional façade. though a perceptive individual may notice a small twitch at the mention of noble wear.
"My good woman, you have just promised me more excitement then I've ever had in one night AND you're paying me for it. I will happily take this job."
Reigning himself in and regaining a bit of his earlier professionalism, Alex looks over the rest of the gathered parties before speaking again.
"If no one has any objections we should probably start things off with who would be most comfortable with what jobs?"
Alessand
"While I am of less noble blood, I am certainly one to want to bend an ear here. I would be more than happy to help learn the intents of others. I'm an excellent speaker, and I help put others at ease with my charity work. I'm also a businessman, I can help with the war leader as well, if that's needed."
He pauses, taking another drink of his water, watching Alex's reaction cautiously.
"But some of these things, they are quite... horrible to do to people. This is how things are truly done? If so, I weep for my nation and our Senate. I had an idea there was politicking, but this level of intimidation is quite a bit more than I had ever thought possible."
It's downright criminal He thinks to himself. He then speaks carefully as he begins anew.
"Getting rid of primogeniture is a good thing. It's not right. There are good reforms in Taldor, but they move too slowly. The funds never materialize. We can do better, and be better, become the shining flame that we once were for all of Golarion. I believe your path will lead us there, despite my reservations.
Adrian Merosett
Adrian remains silent as Alessand speaks. He keeps his gaze intently focused on the man as he speaks, as if trying to see straight through him. He waits until Alessand finishes speaking to chime in.
"I imagine your introduction to high society is going to teach you a great many things, good and ill," Adrian begins. "Horrible in a sense, perhaps, but for what it's worth, I believe much of what Lady Lotheed is proposing be done here is actually quite normal. Mild, even." He moves his hand in circles, swirling his drink in its cup. He pauses to sip from it for effect. "And much as the politicking can get tedious, the alternative to a lot of it, to my mind, would be open conflict."
Adrian sets down his cup. "I'd be best able to assist in discerning the political leanings and motivations of others at the Gala, should it be needed," he says. "I can also engage in the aforementioned politicking. I'd also be able to help in the fabrication of a scandal on the Senate floor. I'm afraid I don't have the subtlety or lightness of foot to be of much use in our other endeavors."
Alexius Brune
Alex simply shrugs when Alessand voices his apprehensions. "The worst I can see is the sabotage, fraud, or theft, and even then no one is getting hurt. Honestly if a couple of upset stomachs and some hurt pride means the possibility for a better life for everyone in this country that can't afford their own personal mansion then I'm all for it. I'm happy to be the one getting my hands dirty, I work better in the background anyway, you nobles can take center stage all you want."
Anabella Sitotu Clement
Ana chuckles. "I have to admit that I'm not too concerned about the stomachs of the senators...they'll recover. I'll warn my mother off, subtly if I can." She stretches. "I thank you for the offer of funds for an outfit, Lady Lotheed, but I have sufficient at home. As for your tasks, I've briefly met Centimus and Pace before; I'm sure I can work on them. I've not met Baron Okerra, but I'm sure I can make friends with him. And, um..." she glances back and forth. "If need be, I'm sure I can help you with moving some of those...objects that Lady Lotheed needs to have vanish, sir."
Alessand
He replies to Adrian and Alex. "I just worry, that's all. One mustn't become part of the problem one hopes to fix. And no harm coming to others is a good thing. Teaching others lessons without having to do harm is always good.
And hearing Ana's offer to make things disappear makes Alessand Blanche just a little bit.
He pauses, thinking. Then he asks. "Do we enter together? Do we need any other form of Jewelry? I really am not much for subterfuge."
In the event someone is trying to pick up on his bluff on no subterfuge:
Bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Caspian Lotheed
"Honestly I can't imagine the wine needs much spoiling. Bartelby's taste is excretiable!" Caspian drawls. "He thinks anything that doesn't taste of dust and old parchment is too young! Always buys the oldest wines, even the ones well past their best."
Alessand's worries have the nobleman raising an eyebrow. "While it is not exactly gallant, I must agree with my Lord Merosett, this is politics in its mildest form. To promote ones own goals one must disgrace one's rivals. To be heard across a hubbub, one must silence the loudest voices - it is simply how the game goes. In Cheliax you have to bluff with devils. In Qadira it's djinn. Frankly Taldor is a beacon of moderation against our neighbours. Not that that means an awful lot." He concludes with a languid shrug of the shoulders.
"I'll talk to the Baron. He's a tournament champion of some repute, we can discuss duelling and I will try and sound out his views. I might be able to talk my way into the cellars to get that wine if need be, I am the Lotheed Heir afterall, it would be a bold servant who denies me the right to look at my families wine. After that," He glances at Martella, "I'd be happy to spend some more time with you dear sister. Show a united front and what-not."
It makes sense that Caspian knows Okerra and he can help out with the wine if required since I can probably social skill it out rather than stealth ones. Also happy to be Martella's aide since I seem to be one of the more physical types. (And have the corresponding campaign trait!) There's also lots of general shin-digging we can do!
Rising and stepping over to Martella, Caspian leans over to speak quietly in his half-sister's ear. "So Martella, what would it take for you to help me meet the Princess?"
Cyrene Syrinx
Cyrene pauses, weighing up the options available, and reflecting on the sort of skills she had access to.
"Any sort of Discovery or Politicking tasks, I would consider myself more suited than others, although I guess I could also attempt to spy on Pythareus should that be required. Any of the other topics...I could assist or be otherwise helpful in some of them, but probably tend to lack the dexterity of movement to be entirely successful. If there is overlap, I'm sure we can find some common ground. Lady Martella, I am sure that there would be no issues with some of us assisting each other to have a higher rate of success?"
GM Dak
Lady Lotheed waits patiently as you discuss, sipping from her mug. At one point she picks up the hand-sized brass cricket beside her and winds the gears before setting it back down. As questions arise she addresses them one by one. Turning to Alessand she reassures him "Politics can be a dirty business, but I'm afraid the ends justify the means. If we are to correct the course of our great nation and keep it from falling further into decay we must move boldly forward into the future. Keep in mind what is at stake here. Not only is the evolution of our country toward a brighter future at risk, but the empire as a whole. The Grand Prince has no male heirs. If something were to happen to him and primogeniture was still in effect the country could be thrown into chaos or even civil war as others fight for control. So, knowing what we are up against, I hope will at least ease your concerns to some degree."
Looking around to the others briefly then turning back to Alessand she continues "As to your entry, that is up to you. Since you will all be using the aid badges of the same senator it won't be questionable for you to enter together, but if you feel it is more appropriate to enter separately, I leave that to your discretion. As to jewelry, I will make a supply available to loan you here tomorrow night before the Gala starts."
As Caspian whispers in her ear she smirks and rolls her eyes then just addresses everyone. "I do have it on good authority that the Princess may be in attendance at least for some of the evening, so anyone wanting to meet her in person you may just get that opportunity."
When Cyrene asks about them aiding one another Martella nods "Of course, in fact I expect you all to assist each other as needed. I'll leave the particulars to you on how to achieve the various tasks, but I would hope that you would put the mission before your own ego. If you feel you are more likely to find success by aiding one another, then please do."
With everyone's acceptance she begins passing the badges around to each of you as she explains "These badges once belonged to the staff of the long-dead Senator Voritas, whose family line was involved in the senate for nearly a thousand years before dying out about a century ago. Senators and other politicians of note traditionally hand out senate aide badges of extinct or exiled family lines to guests they invite to senate events, identifying them at a glance as guests rather than sitting senators or staff. Guards are also more wary of visitors wearing the badges of extinct lines, given the ease with which a rabble-rouser or assassin could abuse this system. As such, be cautious not to draw the guards attention during any of your missions. These badges allow you access to the senate during the historic vote set to take place tomorrow. The badges also allow for two-way communication with the master senator badge that I will be wearing."
To simplify things regarding the task, it would be helpful for you to at least claim one task each that you will "lead" the efforts on.
GM Dak
Martella waits a moment for any questions before continuing "For those of you unfamiliar with the senate let me lay out the rules so you will be able to prepare appropriately."
She takes some time to explain the various rules of the senate.
• Breastplates, ceremonial armor, and light armor may be worn inside the senate building, but no other armor is permitted for anyone except guards.
• Potions, scrolls, spell component pouches, and wands are permitted inside the senate building, and in fact, many senators are themselves spellcasters. However, spellcasting is not permitted within the building without written approval (often issued to entertainers).
• Only light and one-handed weapons are allowed inside the senate building; ranged weapons and two handed weapons are not allowed inside the building. All weapons brought into the senate building must be peace-bound, secured in a sheath with a length of decorative cord. Drawing a peace-bound weapon requires a full-round action. Guards do not need to peace-bind their weapons.
• Animals are generally not permitted inside the senate building, excepting familiars and service animals. Animals larger than an average member of the senate guard are not permitted within the building under any circumstances.
• While guests are free to roam the senate building when invited, individual senators’ offices are off-limits and locked (Disable Device DC 40). No one but the senators and a single aide for each is permitted on the senate floor during a vote.
After laying out the rules she adds "Anyone breaking any of these rules will be quietly escorted outside by the guards. Obviously, that would complicate matters for you as gaining re-entry could become difficult. So please keep the rules in mind as you prepare for the evening." Thinking a moment she shrugs and then looks to each of you "I believe that is everything you might need to know. Do you have any questions? If not, I propose you meet back here tomorrow before the Gala to get your loaner jewelry. We likely won't meet again until you find your way into the Gala."
Caspian Lotheed
"Then I look forward to seeing you there, Martella." Caspian replies before standing from his seat with an unnecessary swirl of his half cape.
"A pleasure to meet you all, I look forward to tomorrow night."
--------------------------------
The next night Caspian appears dressed to the nines. Soft, deep brown boots, midnight blue cavalry britches and a coat of military cut in the same midnight blue. White piping concludes his outfit, lending him a militaristic air without actually identifying him as a serving member of any regiment. At his side is peace-bound a long hilt extending from a slender, curved scabbard. His accoutrements are understated but clearly high quality - two rings with well cut stones and the buttons on his coat gleam in the characteristic manner of real gold. Here is a man who knows how to dress for social occasions!
GM Dak
As Caspian stands to depart Martella sighs "Always in a rush. Do you have a hot date brother?" She smirks then continues "Before you depart I did want to say, I know some of you looked into me before our little meetup. I applaud your initiative and resourcefulness. As such, I have a little gift that may be of use in your goals."
She waves the owner over. The young woman brings a pouch stuffed with some various items. Inside are two vials of liquid blade, eight smoke pellets, a single dose of soul stimulant, and two vials of dust of illusion.
After receiving your gift Martella stands and does a slight curtsy "I hope you enjoy your evenings and I look forward to seeing you all again tomorrow at the Gala! Please spend the day tomorrow preparing as you see fit." Unless otherwise stopped she picks up her brass cricket, putting it securely in one of her pockets and heads out of the cafe leaving you to enjoy your food and drink.

Cyrene places a hand lightly over Martella's in a swift motion. "I'm going to take a guess at the risk of sounding stupid. That cricket buzzes to prevent sound yes? Reducing the chances of being overheard? Would you consider letting us borrow it / or the device you are using to prevent us from being overheard, particularly for the tasks that involve sneaking around quietly undetected."
"I'll also take you up on that jewelry loan. I have a few pieces of my own, but its unlikely to be anything significant enough to be worth wearing to a high society gala. I'd like to be as...distracting as I can if I'm pulling off anything clandestine"
Anabella Sitotu Clement
Ana smiles broadly. "Thank you, Lady Lotheed. I certainly appreciate the chance you're taking on all of us - and I'm looking forward to the Gala!"
She can carry any of those gifts, if the others would like that to happen, but is also ok without them...though see Discussion.
-----------------------
The next day, Anabella arrives at the Senate wearing her best outfit for...complicated work. A slim, cream colored dress in the latest style leaves her arms free, tapering at the waist to a loose but elegant skirt. The skirt is designed to leave her enough movement for dueling or riding, should she want to engage in either activity, and her dark hair has been curled and pinned into stylish piles.
She also takes the time to tuck a dagger into the bodice of her dress. It never hurts to be prepared.
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 7 + 2 = 15
Alessand
Alessand, looking at the items, fears for the worst. He smiles and realizes that they could save us if the need arises.
You are most generous. I will remember this.
Alessand would rather not touch any of the items.
The next evening, Alessand shows up wearing a pair of red-orange pants and a blue shirt, with the shirt working a paisley pattern reminiscent of flames, matching nothing the red-orange and adding highlights of golden yellow. Oddly, it matches his gloves everyone saw the other night. The outfit appears to favor movement. He also carries his studded leather with him.
"Sooo, servants wear this over or under their shirts?". He asks quizzically.
Adrian Merosett
"You are most kind, Lady Lotheed," Adrian says as he rises to leave. "I will see you all tomorrow night at the Gala."
------------------------------------------
The following evening, Adrian arrives to the meeting place dressed in his finest: a deep red high-collared coat adorned with swirling gold designs about the shoulders over a white shirt, dark trousers, and black shoes. He keeps his jewelry and accessories relatively modest. He wears a ring with a fine gem inlaid in it. Along with his usual pouches, he has on his hip a peace-tied dagger with an ornate hilt and scabbard.
He chuckles at Alessand's question. "I'm not certain how many servants wear that sort of armor at all. I suppose it depends on if you want others to know you have it."
Alessand
Alessand, looking at Adrian. "I'm not so certain it's proper. It's a worker's armor. Not really good for much, and not too fancy. I think I'll put this on under, it's soft enough not to be too much of a bother, while also being wise enough to not wish to be stabbed.
Cyrene Syrinx
Cyrene shrugs, a little disappointed. "If you have need of it, then I won't push any further, I'm just merely surprised that you had a use for it, after mentioning you merely wanted to enjoy the gala, rather than engage in clandestine busywork."
-----------------------
In the evening, Cyrene washes, fixes her hair, letting it flow midway down her back, before she dresses in her finest attire and newly purchased nobles outfit. She wasn't exactly pleased with it, as the flowing evening dress was apparently in the latest style, something that involved being particularly tight around the body - more than Cyrene was impressed with. She could even get away with her preferred color (black) being inappropriate to such a party, and instead opted for a dark scarlet red. At least the outfit gave her good movement with her arms, and the borrowed jewelry was an added bonus, a simple necklace and earrings were among the items she had selected from the offerings that Lady Martella had available.
Finally, she brings her scimitar, fastened at her hip, not caring too much about how it clashed - she just wouldn't be caught dead without a weapon by her side at all times.
Alexius Brune
Alex nods when Martella mentions checking her background. "Only an idiot would attend a meeting without first doing there research, and while I may be a Fool, I'm no idiot." As he speaks Alex will also take two of the smoke pellets (if no one attempts to take them he will also take one of the liquid blades and one dust of illusion).
__________________________
When he arrives at the Gala, Alex is dressed in a dark blue and black courtier's outfit with dark purple trimming, a cloak with matching purple and blue coloring (the other side of his revesible cloak), gloves, and a selection of rings and bracelets as well as a jewled clasp for his cloak. Alex has also dyed his hair a dark brown color and used makeup to darken his complexion. He is wearing his rapier at his hip and his black studded leather under his outfit. Full list of what he's bringing with him will be in his profile
GM Dak
After taking time to prepare for the gala you all meet back at the cafe from last night. Once everyone arrives, you travel a few blocks towards the senate building. The Taldan senate is the seat of the senatorial branch of the Taldan government. The structure has existed in one form or another for millennia, though natural disasters, sabotage, and war have partially leveled it several times in the empire's grand history, leading to many large-scale repairs and revisions. The current senate building is a grandiose, T-shaped edifice constructed from white marble. Ostentatious columns carved with glorious scenes of the nation's history surround the building on all sides, while a pronounced flight of precisely 100 stairs ascends to the main entrance.
While senators may enter the senate building with a minimum of fuss, the process for aides, staff, and other attendees to enter is long and tedious. You get shuffled into an expansive line dedicated to senatorial aides, minor noble attendants, and various others deemed as "people useful to people of import." The line progresses ponderously, and it will likely take several hours to finally reach the front. During this time, dozens of overeager merchants attempt to sell a variety of wares to you and other staffers — mostly novelty Taldan flags and phony pieces of historical memorabilia. Several others in the line begin to bemoan the wait, touting their respective level of importance based on association with their affiliated nobles and senators.
The entire affair is quite tiresome.
You are halfway through the line when a dreary inspector approaches you. "You've been selected for a random inspection," the Vudrani woman says. "Follow me."
Anabella Sitotu Clement
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
Ana tenses slightly when the woman approaches her. Again? This doesn’t seem random at all...just racial profiling, or is there something more going on here? Deciding that the safest course is to comply for the moment, Ana flashes what she hopes is a winning smile and says, loudly enough for the others to hear: .“Why, of course. We Clements are quite familiar with the Senate’s random inspections.”
Bluff to convey a secret message: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Welp, that went poorly. It probably seems to everyone else that Ana is truly eager to go along with this and believes it is random! :P
Cyrene Syrinx
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
-_-
Cyrene rolls her eyes when a dreary inspector approaches her, dragging them off for an inspection. It wasn't that greatest start to a clandestine event, but seeing as she wasn't carrying anything illicit, she wasn't too perturbed
Alessand
Alessand complies. "Yes M'Lady"
sense motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
I do wonder if you are choosing me as I am a member of the temple of Aroden. Do you seek the wisdom of the last Azlanti? If so, please seek the temple itself, I am merely a lay member of the temple.
bluff: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Adrian Merosett
Adrian spends his time in line watching people coming and going, observing the attendants in line, and making small talk with those closest to him.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 lol
"Oh right, of course," Adrian replies over his shoulder, only half hearing the inspector. He quickly excuses himself from his conversation and follows along.
Alexius Brune
Never really one for small talk, Alexius is simply watching his surroundings in a relaxed manner and occasionally perusing merchants wares wile keeping an out out for possible threats or targets.
sense motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Spotting the inspector long before she speaks, Alex mearly shrugs at her request in an attempt to appear slightly bored. ”Sure if it gets me through this line, it’s dreadfully boring.”
GM Dak
The inspector glances back at Alessand as he carries on, raising an eyebrow and letting out a sigh, but as everyone complies she keeps an impassive face as she escorts you to the base of the steps to the senate building. Once you are away from the crowd, she says softly, "The names Kathann Zalar. Not to worry, we have a common friend."
The actual inspection is a short affair, with Kathann quickly glancing over you to ensure there are no restricted items. Seemingly satisfied, she nods. "Alright. You're free to go on inside. Enjoy your evening." She ushers you forward ahead of the line. You ascend the hundred marble steps to the senate of the Taldan empire. Hundreds of nobles, senatorial aides, and visiting dignitaries mingle within and without the grand halls of the senate. You spend a few minutes getting the lay of the land.
Map added for reference in Roll20. Also added some additional details to the Loot & Notes for quick reference instead of having to search through previous posts.
This entry gallery celebrates Taldor's abundant military and political glories. Banners and trophies line the halls of the arcade, some displayed openly while others rest behind intricate glass cases, while armor stands and display cases present countless artifacts belonging to great heroes and soldiers. A score of Taldan Phalanx troops stand at attention, acting as both ceremonial honor guards for the senate and guides to some of the military assets on display.
High Strategos Maxillar Pythareus is here, a muscular man in his early forties with weathered skin and close-cropped silver hair. He wears a blue-and-green tabard emblazoned with Taldor's official coat-of-arms. Also here are the five items donated by Earl Calhadion Vernisant for the night's ball--an elaborate silk fan, a brass spyglass, a leather journal, a fine buckler, and an ornate silver dagger.
A2. Courtyard
Breathtaking gardens surround the senate building. Catered patios segregated by short iron fences, coordinated military displays, and even a makeshift zoo of imported animals and magical beasts fill the few open spaces here, even including a small hive of bees busily pollinating the exotic flowers and making the honey used by the senate kitchens. Many of the senior nobles enjoy the breaks between ceremonies in this open space.
Lady Gloriana Morilla is here, sporting the finest of Absalom's fashion.
A3. Emperor's Hall
This gathering space before the senate chamber is set aside as the property of the emperor, and features countless statues and portraits of previous grand princes. While formally these chambers are for the use of the emperor, no grand prince has ever maintained an office within the senate building, and the space is understood to be public meeting rooms by silent agreement.
A4. Gallery
Note that this area doesn't appear on the map.
The second floor of the senate building acts as an observation deck to the events of the main floor, with offices for various senators lining the outer walls. This area of winding passageways is typically open to noble observers and senatorial aides. Much of the gallery is dedicated to entertaining the children of various nobles, with extravagant performances occurring throughout the upper balconies of the senate building.
Countess Abrielle Pace is here, dressed in ridiculously gauche noble clothing and fine jewelry. Also here is Wyssilka the Fantabulous, a halfling jester entertaining the children.
A5. Imperial Archives
The Imperial Archives could have been Golarion's greatest collection of transcribed knowledge, had any care been invested into its upkeep. Centuries of redirected funding and senate-sanctioned pruning of "sensitive information" has ruined the once immaculate reputation of the archives. This vast library now acts as a repository of haphazardly curated books, senate minutes, and genealogy records left open to the scrutiny of uncaring nobles. During the Grand Day of Exaltation, a host of rising aristocrats and aspiring courtiers here tout their knowledge of Taldan history.
Duke Leonard Centimus is here, a round-faced half-elf seated in an elaborate wheelchair.
A6. Senate Floor
Normally closed to non-senators, the vast, circular senate floor is open to special guests during the Grand Day of Exaltation, and myriad would-be nobles take the opportunity to duck in and live out a few moments of power fantasy, issuing mock legislation or engaging in lively debates.
Baron Nicolaus Okerra is here, a handsome man standing a head taller than the rest of the crowd. Also here is Kalbio of Breezy Creek, the intended recipient of the noble elevation from Grand Prince Stavian. He uncomfortably wears clothing of noble finery, constantly fidgeting with the cuffs or scratching at his neck.
A7. Servant Area
While several hidden corridors crisscross the senate building, allowing servants to come and go without disturbing the assembled politicians, this area houses most of the storerooms, workshops, and kitchens where the building's small army of servants bustle around to maintain the facade of opulence. Even this area, never meant for noble eyes, is of exceptional quality, though the gilt has worn thin on most corners, and here and there cheap repairs mar artistic furniture.
Each of the people of import are currently predisposed with sycophants and senatorial matters, considering the coming deliberation. You'll have to wait to try to influence them, but in the meantime, you can do your best to work the crowd.
Social Round 1
A PC can attempt an appropriate skill check with a set DC for one of the areas of the senate, hobnobbing and impressing the general crowd in that area. Each area has two thresholds, which represent levels of influence over that area. Every point by which the PC's result on one of these skill checks exceeds the DC is added to a pool of points specific to that area. When the number of points earned by the party as a whole exceeds the threshold of an area, then the GM provides the PCs with the information and story award associated with that area's threshold value.
You can each make one check now followed by your RP of how you are attempting to influence the area. These are the skills associated with each area:
A1. Appraise, Knowledge (history) or (nobility), Perception, Spellcraft, or Use Magic Device.
A2. Handle Animal, Knowledge (engineering, local, or nature), or Perform (keyboard, percussion, sing, string, or wind).
A4. Acrobatics, Disguise, Perform (act, comedy, or dance), or Sleight of Hand.
A5. Knowledge (arcana, geography, or history), Linguistics, Profession (librarian or scribe), or Stealth.
A6. Bluff, Knowledge (local, nobility, or religion), Perform (oratory), Profession (clerk or barrister), or Sense Motive.
A7. Craft (alchemy, carpentry, jewelry, sculpture, or stonemasonry), Heal, Intimidate, Profession (baker, butcher, cook, innkeeper, or porter), or Sense Motive.
Anabella Sitotu Clement
Ana breathes out a sigh of relief when Zalar turns out to be another “friend” of, presumably, Lady Lotheed. She nods her thanks to the woman and then proceeds with the others into the Senate.
Ana has been into the Senate building with her mother before, of course, but it’s been several years, and the Arcade Of Triumphs still takes her breath away for a moment. Glancing around at the others, she murmurs, “Good luck, everybody. I’ll set out to find Countess Pace; don’t hesitate to track me down if you need anything.”
Passing quickly through the gardens, Ana comes to the Senate floor and balks slightly. This was always morher’s workplace...maybe I’ll explore later, but not now. Spotting her quarry in the gallery above, she ascends the stairs and takes in the situation.
Babysitting, eh? Ana chuckles slightly at the incongruous appearance of the area, in contrast to the elegant scene below, and just watches for a few moments, as Countess Pace is engaged in conversation. Seeing a young noble girl wandering nearby, Ana winks at her. “Want to see a trick I learned in Osirion?” she asks, loudly enough to be noticed. Bending down, she wiggles her fingers in an elaborate gesture, and attempts to “pull a silver coin out of” the little girl’s ear.
Sleight Of Hand: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Caspian Lotheed
Caspian follows Anabella to the Senate floor, although he doesn't go up to the gallery with her. Instead he dives into the politicking nobleman and engages in the highest pursuit of nobles... gossip.
Bluff: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
He soon succeeds in delving into a conversation near Okerra, comparing the relative merits of jousting and during. Caspian reigns for more appreciation for jousting than he feels and the debate draws nearby interest.
