Influence System:
We are going to be using a modified version of the Influence system from Ultimate Combat during some of these downtime sections in Sandpoint. Days will be divided into three segments (morning, afternoon, evening), and for each segment in which nothing else is happening, we'll hold what's called a Social Round.

In a Social Round, you spend time either trying to Discover information about an NPC through a Discovery check, or trying to influence an NPC through an Influence check. You may only make one of these checks per social round, and the check represents how successful you were in either discovering information about or influencing an NPC over the course of that part of the day.

Discovery Checks - if you choose to make a Discovery check, I will provide you a list of skills you can use to try to discover information about a particular NPC. If you succeed at the check, you can learn one of the following:

* Bias - an NPC's bias either for or against particular types of people
* Strength - a method of approaching an NPC that will make it more difficult for you to influence them (these approaches should obviously be avoided)
* Weakness - a method of approaching an NPC that will make it easier to influence them
* Skill - a skill that can be used to successfully influence the particular NPC[/list]

Influence Checks - if you choose to make an Influence check, you choose a skill to use to try to Influence the NPC. You might know which skills are effective (though a successful Discovery check), or you might just guess. Each NPC takes a certain amount of successes to influence them, and successfully influencing them will bring benefits, quests, etc.

Finally, the first time you attempt a Discovery check on an NPC, you can make a Knowledge check (I will tell you which ones you can use) to gain a +4 bonus on all Discovery checks on that NPC. If you listed an NPC as one of your allies or enemies during character creation, then you gain that +4 bonus automatically.

I hope this makes sense, and I think this will be a fun, flexible, but more codified way of running interactions with the people in Sandpoint, but please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! And you should obviously still roleplay any of these interactions - I think we'll get the hang of how to weave together the story with the checks.

A list of the NPCs that you can attempt to Influence, along with their primary location in Sandpoint, can be found here.

The town of Sandpoint is alive with excitement on the evening before the annual Swallowtail Festival. Preparations are underway for the massive celebration for the following day, both for the festival and the dedication of the recently completed Sandpoint Cathedral. Spirits are high, and everyone in the coastal Varisian town is eager to begin the festivities.

Each of you starts where you told me you were during the evening before the festival. Please feel free to describe the scene, and accomplish any tasks you'd like to the night before the festival.

The usually smiling Filona, a gnome girl with bright blonde hair and unremarkable merchant clothes, is very concentrated in building a mechanical toy. It looks like a bird, but it is not yet assembled. Her workstation is a small desk in the workshop owned by Billvar Wheen, the town's wheelwright, for which she pays a small rent every month. Between working the screws and assembling parts using a simple Mage Hand cantrip, she doesn't notice the commotion outside. By the end of the night, she will finish her work.

Eloen is out with bow in hand, watching the east road as the festival setup completes in front of the cathedral. As a long-time resident, she is a familiar face, regularly keeping Sandpoint safe with the rest of the militia.

With her blonde hair carefully tied back and her armor carefully fitted, the elf is quiet and watchful in the early morning.

Rigel sat quietly at the end of the bar, smile on his face as he listened to Ameiko tell another one of her adventuring tales. Another patron yelled out, "I thought you said there were THREE brigands!", to which the owner of the Rusty Dragon replied, "You were well into your cups by then, so what you heard can't be trusted!" All the folks nearby, including the cleric himself, had a good laugh before the story continued.

The young man had only been in Sandpoint a couple of days, eagerly awaiting the groundbreaking of the beautiful new cathedral as he spent the days engaged in philosophical debate with Father Zantus. In truth, the older man had shown Rigel just how much spiritual growth he had ahead of him, but he had never shied away from enlightenment or challenge. For now, he took a swallow of the foamy mug of ale in front of him, listening to the chatter nearby and greeting any who approached in a friendly manner.

Ileana rushes through the commotion in the streets, nearly running down one person, only to pivot at the last possible moment to slip past them, basket shifting its weight to smoothly swerve within her motion, one large concentric circle, pulling back inwards as she balances a heavy bag of flour on the other shoulder. At times calm and at times clearly anxious, she slips past one crowd into another, hearing snippets of excited conversation as she makes her way towards home.

She reaches the front door of the Savories and grabs hold of the handle, ignoring the closed sign. Letting the basket fall into the crook of her elbow, she jerks the handle upwards, dislodging the corner from a loose board as she pulls on it - something they'd been meaning to have fixed, but hadn't quite had the time, and is immediately hit by the scent of all-things-baking.

She crosses the small waiting area, the bell above the door jingling once more as she presses the door closed behind her with a foot and places her basket onto the counter. The room is dimly, comfortably lit and year-round seems to carry the warmth of a late autumn fire - as would be expected of the town's bakery.

A small smile plays on her lips as she hears her aunts in the back room bickering over something that probably was far less important than either thought, but that she knew better than to suggest. As she lifts the hinged partition of the counter to slip behind, she calls into the back of the store, "An? Ari? Get to a stopping point in there, and I'll get to work on the bread dough for the morning. I've picked up Risa's on the way, get in here and eat!"

Letting the flour fall from her armored shoulder into her arms, she makes her way into the kitchen, stomach filling with all-things-fluttery over the opportunity - and challenge - that tomorrow was already placing at their feet.

Leona softly hummed to herself while sitting on the stump next to her home, just outside the walls of Sandpoint. It was a quiet night save for a few of the more rowdy citizens excited for the festival but she was focused on adding the finishing touches to the wooden rose that she had been carving for the past few nights. When the festival began she would find a place to "plant" her creation as an offering to Shelyn and a memorial to her old caretaker Layla, that had been lost during the fire that took the original chapel.

Since her employer, Titus Scarnetti, was still out of town Leona was looking forward to spending some of her time off at the festival. Even though many in the town distrusted her, because of her mother's questionable behavior, Sandpoint was still her home and Kaye would likely be there as well so there was going to be at least one friendly face.

The evening continues to night, full of preparations for some, revelry for others, and rest for those who want to make the most of their festival day.

The morning dawns the following day with the sun shining, birds chirping, and the same tangible excitement still in the air. Many of those serving food, hosting games, or selling their wares at the festival are up early setting up. Others who plan to just enjoy the festivities grab breakfast at the Rusty Dragon or the White Deer before heading out into town to start the day.

Around 9am, everyone starts to gather around a stage that's been set up in front of the newly completed cathedral. A woman with short auburn hair stands in the center. Behind her sit four wooden chairs, three of them occupied. As the crowd notices her, a hush descends and all eyes turn to the stage. She smiles and begins to speak:

"Welcome! As many of your know, my name is Kendra Deverin and I am proud to serve as mayor of this fine town. It's wonderful to see so many of you here to join us on this proud day. I'd like to extend my welcome to the many new faces I see in the crowd. I hope you all are enjoying your stay here in Sandpoint and especially if it is your first visit here I sincerely hope that you're having a wonderful time. And to all of the old faces I see today, thank you for coming and thank you for everything that each of you has done to keep this town strong in recent years. I see that even Larz Rovanky has torn himself away from work to join us today! It is truly a miracle from Desna herself!”

There is quite a bit of laughter and many eyes are turned to a serious looking man dressed in all leather and wearing a sour expression on his face. Kendra waves to him and continues.

Without further ado, let me introduce your Sheriff, Belor Hemlock!"

A dour looking man wearing a worn breastplate and a longsword belted at his waist stands and walks to the center of the stage. His eyes are constantly moving about the crowd. He shakes the Mayor's hand and begins to speak.

"Thank you Mayor. Even in the heat of celebration, let us not forget the sad events that brought us to this day. And also let us not forget the souls that were lost five years ago. I would like you to all join me in a moment of silence to remember the lives that were lost in the fire that claimed our previous chapel on that fateful night.”

The Sheriff lowers his head and the crowd joins him, many of them quite awkwardly as the silence persists. After the moment is over, the Sheriff raises his head and begins to speak again.

In remembering let us also not allow these events to repeat themselves. I am of the understanding that a bonfire is planned for tonight. I urge you all to observe caution during this event," he says, clearing his throat and smiling awkwardly. "And ummm... Enjoy yourselves. Let me introduce the next speaker; give your attention to Cyrdak Drokkus, proprietor of the local theater."

He nods to the crowd and walks back to his chair, passing the next speaker who is already on his way up to the center-stage. This man is quite a contrast to the Sheriff; he is brightly dressed and seems to be thoroughly enjoying the day. As he reaches the center stage he loosens his collar a bit, winks into the crowd and starts to talk:

"Well, thank you Sheriff for that uplifting oratory. Now I know this town has been through some hard times, but look at what we've accomplished,” he says, motioning towards the church. ”And I'm telling you, they spared no expense with this place. Father Zantus' chamber pot? Solid gold. I kid you not, our generous nobles put a pretty copper into the construction of this joint. I think the Churches even chipped in a silver or two! I even heard a rumor that all of the Gods got together and scrounged up four gold pieces to help get this thing built! But don't take it from me, the Padre over here is the one with the direct line, he's the one you want to hear from! But before I let him get things going I'd like to take this opportunity to extend my personal invitation to each and every one of you to the new production of "The Harpy's Curse" starring the world-famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda as Avisera the harpy queen! It's all premiering tomorrow evening at the Sandpoint Theatre and it is going to be fab-u-lous! And now join me in a bit of applause for his holiness himself, Father Zantus!"

The crowd cheers as Cyrdak motions Zantus to the center stage. The priest looks noticeably abashed at the reception set up for him. He wears the traditional ceremonial robes of a priest of Desna and a shiny silver holy symbol about his neck. He smiles and tries to calm the crowd down, eventually speaking when the applause has subsided:

"Ahem, thank you. Thank you Cyrdak. And thank all of you for coming to join us on this most holy day. Today is a day of new beginnings so without boring you with long speeches, I declare the Swallowtail Festival officially underway!"

The day's festivities start with games that you notice have been set up all around the main square. You see:

The Devil Hunt - Do you have what it takes to bring down the infamous Sandpoint Devil and keep him from menacing the surrounding area? Take a shot and see!

The Lighthouse Smash - Who needs a lighthouse without a light? The Old Lighthouse has become an eyesore; let's knock it down so we can use the stone to build something new!

Dragon Races - There's been talk of starting dragon farming in Sandpoint, so we need to find out which are the fastest so that we have the best dragons! Pick yourself a dragon and pit it in a Dragon Race against your friends!

Ogre Stomp - Step on up and show your strength! There's no place for noodle-armed weaklings here!

You can choose to play any of these games if you'd like. Otherwise, let me know what you're doing throughout the morning!

Having turned in 'early', after preparing the dough the night before while her aunts ate, Ileana had volunteered herself to let the aunts get a bit of a nap in while she did all of the setting up out on the street. Her little handcart was positively brimming with butterfly-shaped cookies, 'glass' ornaments made from sugar - mostly in the shape of stars (melts in your mouth -and- hands, so eat it quick!) - and most importantly, festival bread. There was much more back at the bakery, and within a few hours they'd likely be baking more fresh delights to fuel the town.

She took a few moments to stretch languidly in the morning sun, yawning, before adjusting her hair. She reaches down, grasping the handles of the cart, before beginning to maneuver it slowly through the streets, meandering, but keeping to the side and offering any who glanced her way a small, friendly smile accompanied by a nod.

The young woman pushing the cart had lived in sandpoint since her birth and in recent years had become much more involved in various parts of the community than her youth had suggested she ever would. Her Chelish heritage was clear from her pale skin and dark hair - a deep burghundy that framed her face and played against her bright, blue eyes. Playing off of her hair was a splash of red on her lips, which clearly drew a line to still more red in the form of not only her armor, but the scarf that was wrapped around her neck.

Accompanying the red was the orange-gold of copper accents, both in the form of jewelry and protective plates within her armor. Further down was another scarf, this one matching the coppery tones more easily, which was wrapped around her waist like a belt. An ordinary looking scimitar hangs from her hip and sways with each step, stopping when she's approached by anyone, local, or otherwise.

It doesn't take long for the young woman to make it to the stage where everyone is gathered, and the festivities are officially called to open. She applauds the end of each speech, but audibly groans at the impiety of Cyrdak's particular brand of humor for the day. And of course he'd mention his next play, prompting a playful eye-roll from her as well.

Once the festival has officially begun, Ileana is already poised just to the side of the crowd, with her baked goods and confections ready to draw the attentions of those who had either missed breakfast in anticipation of the festival foods, or who had decided that it was time for second-breakfast.

Due to habit, Filona woke up early, excited with nothing in particular and energetic as to not sleep into anything exciting. As she quickly remembers the festival she gets makes no effort to contain herself. After realizing she might have woken up her friend Villar, from whom she rents a small bed, she decides to take her eagerness outside. She looks at the wares she intended to sell today and thinks the children won't be able to convince their parents to buy anything this early. Instead, she picks the two folding scythes she built and goes to the street to find some early worm farmers.

As she breathes the fresh air, she wishes her clothes were a little more adequate to the festive occasion, but then again she never cared enough to buy some. After briefly walking the street she smells bakery and remembers she'll need energy for the day. She goes on to buy some nice smelling bread from the pretty lady, but pauses after seeing she's wearing weapon and armor. She dismisses her discomfort as paranoia and remembers this lady is usually in town and the people don't treat her like a threat. Then she moves on to buy the bread and treats herself to some butterfly shaped cookie. After breakfast, she moves on to the sales.

Come look at the newest farming tool that just came from the other side of the ocean! she exclaims to a weary looking farmer. Her sales tactics are usually coated by some fabulous lie.

Filona keeps this up until the opening speeches. She happily hears them all and is eager to watch Cyrdak's play. How fabulous it must be! she thinks. After the priests final words, though, Filona can't help herself and cheers joyfully and prestidigitates some minor fireworks in the air.

During the festivities, she stops back home to get her toys and goes on the sales pitch she had practiced. This was a beautiful bird from a land really far away she tells a child. An evil and bitter warlock hated this bird's beautiful singing and turned it into wood. Until a brave child finds a way to break the curse, the only way to keep the bird happy is to help it fly on and on, she says like a secret to the listening child while moving the wooden bird up and down, which makes the wings flap loosely. Filona is so satisfied with her story, that she decides to make a small surprise to the first child that buys her toy. As the child is far away, she makes some Ghost Sound of some happy chirping of a bird coming out of the toy, in order to make her customer happy.

As Filona thinks of a story for the second bird she intends to sell, and the toy chickens, she comes across many opportunities for some pranks and she doesn't consider not doing them. Some tools are switched places with some carefully timed Mage Hand, a bucket can suddenly have a hole in it with some drilling and some shoelaces can be untied, again with Mage Hand. Eventually, she can also help with some of the games that need repairing and she does help, be it with knowledge or the mending spell. She even forgets to charge for helping, as is usual for merchants like her.

All in all, Filona is as happy as she can be, and she makes no restraint in showing it.

Rigel woke early in the morning to the sounds of the Rusty Dragon already bustling with activity. The young man's mouth started to water as the smell of baking bread and sizzling bacon wafted into his nostrils, but he maintained enough self control to prostrate himself and offer thanks to Lady Luck for another day in this glorious world. Blinking a bit of grit out of his eyes (maybe he should have listened to a couple less tales the previous evening), the young priest took a seat in the common room and loaded up on the Dragon's scrumptious breakfast before wandering out into the fairly crowded streets.

The aromas out here were just as savory, though more diverse as the different vendors were setting up shop and already calling to get the attention of the townspeople and the transients like Rigel who had come specifically for the event. The cleric chuckled as he saw a gnomish woman trying to unload her wares on some hesitant farmers, though she was far from the only one trying to push their product onto those who were less enthusiastic about the transaction.

As the speakers were getting ready to address the crowd a couple hours after sunup, Rigel was passing a cart with various baked good 'manned' by a pale young woman with dark hair. Briefly looking over the food in passing, he did a double-take, then grinned and took a couple of steps back before offering a coin to the woman and then taking one of the butterfly-shaped cookies. "Thank you... The young man seemed about to say something else, but then the town's Mayor started speaking and he politely turned his attention to her.

As Kendra kicked things off, the joke was lost on Rigel, as he didn't know who Larz was, but he understood well enough and laughed good-naturedly. He listened with bored disinterest as the Sheriff spoke, then with patient humor as the theatrical Cyrdak took the stage. The young priest truly took interest when Father Zantus was called upon to speak, and cheered with the rest of the locals and guests when the Festival was officially started.

Rigel would be wandering around, watching others participate in the games and buying an occasional drink or snack. His real interest is in the ground-breaking of the new Cathedral and the Swallowtail release.

Ileana smiles welcomingly to the gnome as she catches her looking in the direction of the food, then tilts her head inquisitively as she pauses. After she decides on her purchase, she speaks up, "Ha, I'll have to let Aneka know she hasn't quite outdone Arika." Ileana says to the gnome as she chooses both the bread and the cookie, offering her a conspiratorial wink.

"Festival bread is a classic, and it always sells. Do I... recognize you from somewhere? I'm Ileana Avertin, one of the bakers from the Savories. What's brought you to Sandpoint?" she tacks on, before the little gnome can flee to safety.

"Overlook the doom and gloom." Ileana says to Rigel, offering a friendly smile to the man she didn't recognize. "For all the good that's going on, it's peppered with bad memories for a lot of us. How's the Swallowable Swallowtail?" she asks, nodding towards another of the cookies on her cart and swiftly changing the subject. "My aunt made them, and the groan-worthy joke of a name."

After a few hours work, Filona recalls her breakfast and wonders if she did wrong in not introducing herself, but decides she was right to flee from the dangerous looking woman. After all, she doesn't want to be recognized as the prankster who has been bothering old lady Alma and cut to shreds by an armored warrior.

Yes, she thinks, I should probably avoid meeting her in the streets. That thought quickly fades as she spots another potential customer child.

Now, see this chicken? It may seem like an ordinary wooden toy, but this lovely piece is work from the misterious elves of Kyonin!, she says pointing towards the east. They've enchanted it so that it looks like it's pecking! she exclaims while rolling the toy on the ground which makes the toy chicken's head move back and forth.

Despite Leona 'hiding' at the back of the crowd during the speeches, it wouldn't take more than a glance to spot the short Ulfen girl in the sea of Varsians and Chelaxians. If her red hair wasn't enough of a beacon she carried an axe nearly larger than herself, Titus had her carrying it around so often that she felt naked without it now. As the speeches went on Leona would look around the audience in hopes of finding some friendly faces, she had a bad reputation among many of the older people in town and her work for Titus hadn't helped with that but she still had a few friends in town.

Once the speech ended and the festival had officially opened Leona would try to talk to anyone she knew from town, which would likely be Ileana if she wasn't too busy with her cart. "Have you seen Kaye yet?" She would ask Ileana in her, sadly, best attempt at small talk as she searched her pockets for the money to buy some the festival bread for breakfast."Titus is out of town for a while so I may have some free time for once."

Ileana's eyes look upwards into the sky as she searches her memory for whether or not she'd spotted Kaye so far this morning. As she does, she keeps up the small talk, "That's really strange, with so many people coming into town specifically for the festival, a local leaving. Really important business I take it?"

Ileana:
Yes, you would have seen Kaye around the festival that morning, and you noticed her speaking to the sheriff, Belor Hemlock, on more than one occasion.

Customers come and go, stopping by both Filona and Ileana's stands—you're quite satisfied both by the number of customers who stop by and the sales you're able to accumulate throughout the morning.

As it gets closer to noon, the local taverns begin to bring out an incredible assortment of food, all free of charge to the festival goers. While the food from all the taverns is quite good, it quickly becomes clear that the darling of the lunch is, as usual, Ameiko Kaijitsu. Her remarkable curry-spiced salmon and early winterdrop mead easily overshadow the other offerings, such as the Hagfish’s lobster chowder or the White Deer’s peppercorn venison.

Eloen walks a beat, moving from attraction to attraction, glancing now and then at shows or wares but always moving on again with her bow in-hand. Her attention seems focused less on the festivities and more on the foot traffic on the roads: watching for pickpockets, drunken altercations, or magical hazards gone awry from an illusionist's stage show.

By midday she accepts a small slice of peppercorn venison from the White Deer's proprietor and finally sits to eat delicately, taking small bites with tableware, still scanning the crowds.

The midday pause came as a relief for Filona. She was tired from all the excitement and street selling. As she welcomed lunchtime through a small portion of all meals, although staying clear of the mead, she took a mental note to open her own shop soon and stop wandering about with wares.

After lunch, the little gnome allowed herself a half hour rest before moving on with her sales. Who knows, maybe she could run out of stock today! Once again on her feet, she tried to locate some young elf for some selling challenge. See this wooden bird? she says in elvish, I found it in a junkers pile, can you believe it? After investigating, I found out that it was built in honor of an ancient elven king's bird pet!

Earlier

The young priest chuckled at the dark-haired baker, nodding. "Quite edible. Though the name is even more of a mouthful." Rigel reached out and picked up one of the sugar treats, paying the appropriate price to Ileana before letting it dissolve upon his tongue. He had overheard vague stories of the Late Unpleasantness, and had not delved any deeper into it. He had of course heard a bit more from Father Zantus, but even he had left much of the detail of Chopper's murders and the fire that had destroyed the former chapel to Rigel's imagination.

"So, is baking the family gift, then?"

Around noon

As the food is brought out, the cleric is pleased and surprised to learn that all the offerings are free. The young man attacked the sample's with the gusto of a male barely into his twenties, making sure to try a bite from every table. Although there were several delicious options, Rigel was again drawn to Ameiko's spread, the foreign cuisine outclassing the local fare.

The young man grinned as he again found the gnomish woman prattling on at a poor elven chap, though he did have to admit that the small, mechanical contraption was pretty impressive. He switched his attention between it and the woman with the ridiculously large pole-axe, the weapon large enough to catch his eye repeatedly.

"It is, and it is." Ileana says with a smile as he buys one of the sugar stars. "Not quite, but at the same time, yes!" she says, nodding. "The main things necessary for a talent or hobby are for opportunity and interest to align... so, having access to a large kitchen of specialized baking tools and an interest in creating tasty things has lead me towards baking... and sugar glass. I'm still working on that; you can't really use confectioner's sugar to make it, so I had to order pure sugar." she pauses for a moment, recognizing that her inner nerd was shining brightly, before changing the subject to him. "So, what's brought you to this particular corner of the world? I mean, aside from the Festival?"

"Mmmm... now that I think of it, Kaye's been hanging around with the Sheriff for most of the day... off and on. So if you spend a bit of time around Belor, you'll likely find her." Ileana shares after a moment's thought as her question settles in the air between the two.

Just before lunch time and all of the food is set to roll out, Ileana drives the cart back to the bakery, passing through crowds and selling what she can. The twins would have made more goodies (and different goodies) in the time she'd been gone, and they'd wind up manning the cart tonight... or if they were lucky, their mother would, freeing them both up. She parks the cart in the customer waiting space, before calling into the back of the room "It's lunch time, so I'm going to go have some fun at the festival and get a good meal in! I'll see you guys later tonight!" before heading back outside.

On her way out to the luncheon, she checks on the various games that have been set up, curiosity drawing her eye to each and trying to figure out how each works. Eventually, she'd wind up with a small amount of salmon curry and a large helping of peppercorn venison. She knew she'd regret missing out on the curry that she'd never tried, but she knew she loved Garridan's cooking; better safe than sorry.

She slides a hunk of festival bread across the intervening space between Eloen and herself, just torn from an hours-fresh loaf. "Busy morning?"

"Thank you," says the elf as she accepts the piece of bread. "It has been a reasonably quiet morning, all matters considered. One loud argument, no fistfights yet. I expect as the day wears on and people imbibe a bit more we'll have to break up some altercations, but thus far the festival has been more happy times than bad."

"Are you enjoying yourself?" she asks. "The cathedral has been a long time in coming, since the Late Unpleasantness, and I think many people are letting off tension now - this is a turnaround from the unfortunate events that led to the burning of the old shrine."

"Something with his family I believe." She answered for Titus's absents. "Plus most his money came from selling before the festival I'd think, not many tourists interested in buying wheat and lumber to remember us by." Leona seemed a little disappointed when Ileana mentioned Kaye being with the sheriff, it was likely a day off for Kaye as well and she didn't want to intrude on their time as a secret/not so secret couple.

Leona would thank Ileana before leaving her to her business."Enjoy the festival and good luck with your sales. I'll see you at the bonfire tonight." Leona wanders around the festival throughout the day, checking on various vendors, games, and people - generally just trying to enjoy the day. Once the taverns bring out the food she is quick to get her fill on Ameiko's star dish but it isn't until after she'd finished stuffing herself on the fish that she noticed the man occasionally looking at her. A combination of self-consciousness and habits as a body guard immediately put her on the defensive as she went to confront him. "Have we met? She asked with crossed arms.

The young man thoroughly enjoyed the sugar candy melting in his mouth before addressing the local woman, looking off towards the massive Cathedral with a wistful smile. "I'll admit the prospect of the Swallowtail Festival was appealing on its own, considering the symbology. But the completion of the Cathedral and my own training in the service of The Great Dreaming being completed were coincidences I couldn't ignore."

Rigel turned his attention back to Ileana, the smile creasing his face further. "Of course, I had no idea of all the wonderful foods and friendly faces. Your town surely is a hidden gem in Varisia. So do all the locals hawk their wares to the tourists, or do you get to have some fun, as well?"

Post Lunch, finding a game!

Having had little enough of the curry to both ensure that Garridan didn't feel slighted and ensure her own knowledge of whether she actually liked the dish or not, Ileana finishes the last vestiges of venison and pilfered-from-her-own-cart bread. Refilling her canteen with a soft prayer, along with any other mostly-empty water pitchers in the area, she rises and says her goodbyes, going off in search of some minor form of adventure. Eventually, she discovers a non-food-related festivity and settles in to watch just what was going on with the Devil Hunt.

It is showing that we have finally overcome those bad years, the terrible events where people were scared of their own neighbors and the town wasn't safe because of its own threats from within. Some people let out their anxieties by becoming wild, overenthusiastic, or argumentative, so the sheriff has us keeping an eye out for any little scraps that might pop up. I'm pleased, though. The elf woman traces a finger along her bow idly. "Hopefully this is a good new beginning for our town."

In fact, you are quite surprised at how well-behaved everyone has been. It's as if no one wants to do anything that might disrupt what has been such a joyous day.

Dragon Races

Set up in the Sandpoint Market Square, this game has two double lane tracks set next to each other with a three-foot wide gap between the two 30-foot-long tracks. Near the starting line is a large cage with 12 lizards, each with a set of twig-and-cloth wings attached to their backs and painted different colors to look like miniature dragons.

The man running the game, who introduces himself as Gressel Tenniwar, asks for a single copper piece to play and then allows you to choose a “dragon.”

Describe what the “dragon” you choose looks like, and then roll initiative!

Devil Hunt

As you approach, you see an archery range has been set up on the beach down by the lighthouse. Two large targets, with silhouettes of a scary looking winged horse splashed across the center, are set up about 150 feet away from where you stand. The bullseye is about where the creature’s heart would be.

An older, balding Varisian man with black hair, a big thick mustache, and a noticeably big belly beckons you forward.

”Think you’ve got what it takes to bring down this menace? I’ve had my fair share of run-ins with the Sandpoint Devil, and I can assure you it’s no easy task! One copper piece gets you two shots!”

Make two ranged attacks with the longbow provided (no, you can’t use your own). Remember to take a -2 penalty for attacking outside the longbow’s first range increment.

Extremely excited with the game, Filona happily pays the copper and chooses a yellow "dragon", which was supposed to be golden, with small wings. Despite less impressive, the smaller wings ought to make it run faster... , she recons. Wanting cheers for the crowds, she says out loud: I know this one! It's the fiercest of them all!

As the critters are being set, she playfully says I know an incantation that will make this dragon run faster! and asks Gressel permission to play to talk to the lizard. She plans to, instead of playing out, actually cast a Speak with Animals spells and whisper the lizard that there is a handful of eggs in the end of the track.

Earlier with Ileana

Rigel snickered a bit at the woman's jibe, certainly having deserved it. He moved to leave Ileana's stand, turning his head as he slowly walked away so as to continue speaking. "Perhaps I'll see you around later, should your lethargic bakers manage to join the festivities. Take care!" He chuckled, offering a wave before joining the crowd once more.

I guess I needed an alarm bell or something to get my attention, sheesh! Leona

As the cleric savored the taste of the salmon at Ameiko's table once more, his eyes flicked over to the axe-wielder, only to find the young woman approaching him rather directly. As she got closer, he decided she was even younger than she looked from a distance, and judging by her posture she wasn't particularly pleased to be the subject of his scrutiny. As she asked her blunt question, he smiled as charmingly as he could muster, shaking his head. "I'm sure I'd remember if we had, Miss. Rigel Pordyras, newly-minted acolyte of Lady Luck."

Unsure of what the local custom of greeting was, he offered a hand after hastily wiping it on his cloak, confident that at least most of the grease was gone. He'd have to be careful today, or he'd need to find a tailor to expand his clothing.

Dragon Races

Four "dragons," including Filona's yellow dragon, are removed from the cage and placed in the track. Gressel instructs that those with a dragon in the race can say anything they want to the dragons, but they can't be touched. As he says go, people from all around start shouting toward the lizards. Amid the din, Filona casts a spell and begins to communicate with her yellow dragon.

Ileana takes a moment to ponder the game, and her lack of personal money... but then eventually relents. She had plenty of money at home that she could exchange some of the change she'd gotten from the bakery sales with; she'd just need to keep a running tally of just how much she'd spent.

She pays the man and takes up the bow and arrows. She keeps the arrows in her hand as she lines up each shot... and frowns at how poorly her shots flew. "I usually hunt with a shortbow." she explains bashfully after her first shot.

Rigel continued to smile as the woman introduced herself, though he did cock his head to the side slightly at the pregnant pause before she added her occupation. He internally shrugged it away, thinking maybe she was hired muscle for the Festival and perhaps didn't have a steady occupation at the moment. Or maybe she was just lying completely and thought he was a shady character. The priest nearly laughed at the thought. Nearly...that axe looked big and menacing this close.

After their hands unclasped he took a prudent step back before replying to her question. "Of course! I was still in training at the time, but I was saddened to hear of the loss of the previous church at that most terrible time in Sandpoint's history. To think that a building of this grandeur would grow out of the resolve and fortitude of this community is a story in itself! This place had enough bad luck that Desna herself stepped in, I believe." Rigel had started out a bit reserved at Leona's posture, but by the end he was speaking animatedly and with excitement.

Dragon Races

After an initial lack of success, you are finally able to convince your lizard that there really is food at the end of the track, and it sprints past the other dragons to win the race.

As the man running the game hands you a big, cheap medal that says "1st Place - Swallowtail Festival Dragon Races," you see a Varisian man smiling broadly and collecting gold from some of the others who were watching.
