"Ah, Mr. Trenton, hello," Teleri says, straightening up. "This is Ives Tunn. He has been assisting me. Mr. Tunn, Mr. Trenton is the head of the Sackbury Mining Corporation's operation here in Pentrefan."

"As for my progress, so far we've inspected the damage at the shed by the docks, the stables, and here at the HQ, and also made a trip into the mine to see if we could learn anything relevant there. It was interesting, but I fear that the main thing we learned on that trip is that Mr. Tunn finds enclosed spaces uncomfortable."

"I have a theory about what's going on, but I would like to speak with Anderson before we discuss it. I want to make sure I've covered all the available evidence. Will you be available this afternoon, sir?"

The manager nods to Ives though still looks puzzled by him. "Helping with the investigation, eh? Well that's.... good." Trenton looks interested when Teleri mentions a theory ”Well I’d like to hear about that as soon as possible so of course, head over to the infirmary. I’ll be in my office all afternoon.” He sighs a bit ”I’ll probably have to stay late to get everything done but the work is flexible so yes, come by this afternoon.”

She starts heading towards the infirmary, glancing at Ives to see if he'll come along.

You head over to the Infirmary to visit Anderson. A man in his early thirties lies on a cot, bandages covering harsh bruises. He looks up as you come in and speaks with some difficulty due to the pain "Oh? Who are you?"

DC 16 perception or heal on Anderson, may roll both:

His bandages don't cover all of his bruises and you can see that they look like he was hit by small, blunt projectiles many times.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Anderson," Teleri says, taking a seat by his bedside. "My name is Teleri ver Rhosyn, and I'm investigating the recent incidents of vandalism and assault here in Pentrefan. This is Ives Tunn, who has been assisting me. I am sorry to find you still so indisposed. But if you're feeling up to it, I would very much like to hear your story. Would you be so kind as to tell us what happened the evening you were attacked, please? Starting from when you arrived at work? The more detail you can give, the better."

She takes out her journal and a pen as she speaks, then smiles at him and waits hopefully, pen poised to take notes.

Anderson calms down at Teleri's soothing matter. "Oh yes. Ok that's good. Well I headed into the mine for my shift. Nothing unusual there. Breaking rock for hours. When my shift ended, I stayed a little longer to uh... tidy my gear, ya know? Then when I was heading home, I walked by the docks and I thought I saw something moving across the river. Maybe a small boat or something. It was dark so I couldn't see it too well. I walked to the end of the dock to see what it was and called out to ask if there was anybody there. Then I heard a little, I don't know" he searches uncertainly for the word "twang or something and a whizz. Then something hit me in the head and something else hit me in the ribs. Next thing I knew, I woke up here."

Are the wounds non-lethal, like bruises from square arrow heads?

Teleri determines that Anderson was uncomfortable during and is probably concealing something regarding the "tidy my gear" bit of his account.

He thinks for a moment then shakes his head "No I don't know that I heard anything else... I guess it kind of smelled a little funny. Sort of like a fish. Or something slimy. But the river often smells that way."

Ives perceptive examination does determine that the wounds look like they came from small-sized blunt arrows.

The man looks at Teleri, won over by her friendly and casual manner. "Well you see, miss. I had to take care of something. Some of us had... borrowed... some tools to do something... to send a message you might say. And I needed a few minutes alone to return the things we'd borrowed. That's why I left later than the rest of my shift."

"Ahh," Teleri says thoughtfully. That would account for the damage on the HQ building being higher off the ground than the damage to the shed by the river, she thinks. Two different groups of vandals.

"Now, Mr. Anderson," she says, lowering her voice to ensure it does not carry. "This is only my second day in town, so I cannot pretend to know the people here well. But even in the short time I've been around, I've heard ... let us say, rumblings of discontent. Nothing very specific, though. Banging up the boards on the side of the HQ definitely got the administration's attention -- but as far as I know, they don't know what it means. Just that someone is unhappy about something."

"Now, I am an independent contractor here. I have no interest in punishing people or assigning blame. My goal is to identify the cause of the problems, and try to find solutions. So that no one needs to -- send messages. So: why don't you tell me what you're so unhappy about that you and the others felt you had to deface the HQ? I give you my word, I will not bring your name into it when I discuss this with the administration."

Anderson gives a start and looks at Teleri with plenty of fear in his eyes but her calm manner soothes him once more. He sighs deeply and continues "It's those orc runts, taking our jobs. Not right for all those raiders and marauders to take away our work. And kids? That's just insulting." He mutters to himself "At least let more of our kind of kids take the strength trials..."

Anderson looks sullenly at the opposite wall. "Foreman eyeballs the kid, sees how strong he or she looks. Mostly just whether or not the kid has green skin. My nephew's as strong as an ox. But he's wiry. Foreman didn't give him the time of day. And my sis' family needs the money..."

"Why are they using children, anyway?" Teleri asks. "I gather there's a spell cast on them -- does it only work on children? Why not cast it on adults?"

Campaign info Maps Sheets Current date: May 30th

Anderson shakes his head "I don't know much about the magical side of things but the spell makes you able to carry and pull a whole lot more than normal. It works fine on adults but they only cast it on kids. 'Cost e-fishy' or something. They drag the rubble and ore out of the tight places. Tricky spots where we have to keep the shaft really small. They can pull a cart of hour up a steep hill in a shaft a foot high for hours... Unnatural... That's not the way mining should be..."

"All right," Teleri says. "Thank you, Mr. Anderson. We'll let you rest now. I hope you heal quickly and well." She pats his hand briefly, then rises and makes her way out of the infirmary with Ives.

"I'm inclined to go talk with Mr. Trenton now," she says, quietly. "As I see it, there are two basic problems here: the runoff from the mine is poisoning the river and the creatures that live in it, which has led some of the local fey to retaliate. SMC needs to filter the toxins out of that runoff, or at least isolate it in a holding pond rather than dumping it in the river. Then they need to try and establish better relations with the fey -- an apology would be a good start, but they may need to make more substantive reparations."

"At the same time, there are strong racial tensions in town. I don't think it's reasonable to try and undo what has been done; but perhaps SMC could make their hiring practices a little more balanced by performing actual tests of strength rather than just eyeballing it. Perhaps a public competition of strength -- who can toss stones of particular weights the furthest. Make a holiday out of it once a year, with jobs in the mine going to the top contestants. That might go a ways towards defusing things."

She turns to catch Ives' eye squarely. "I know you're uncomfortable here in town," she says. "It must feel alien after growing up in the forest. But I think you should come with me when I speak to Mr. Trenton. You're the closest thing the fey have to a spokesman here."

"And then I will point out that with passionate defenders like yourself, failing to deal with the runoff is going to cause him more and more problems as the forest's inhabitants rise in its defense. Unless I miss my guess, he is a man who cares about profits and efficiency; there is nothing profitable or efficient about having to fight off constant harassment by fey. It will cost him less to fix the runoff issue than it would to fight a long, slow war against them."

She frowns thoughtfully. "But that's only half the problem, really. In addition to persuading Mr. Trenton to do the right thing, we also need to find out who it is that's organizing the fey assaults. Who put that stone in the frog's head? We need to find that person and persuade them to hold off and give SMC some time to fix the issue."

The two have been walking towards HQ as this conversation progresses. Coming to the door they go inside. "Hello, Sarah," Teleri says cheerfully. "I believe Mr. Trenton is expecting us?"

Campaign info Maps Sheets Current date: May 30th

Sarah nods "Of course, just a moment." She rises from her small desk and heads to the manager's door. Then she slips a piece of green paper under the door. "He'll be with you in just a moment." Not two minutes later, Silas Trenton steps from his office. "Ah yes. Ms. Teleri and her consultant. I hope you have useful information for me. Do step in." He ushers you into his office. These offices are exceedingly white. The walls are white-washed and the wood itself is painted white. The middle-aged, pudgy man sits behind his desk of cherry wood and smile brightly at you from behind stacks of papers.

I'm going to split this up a bit rather than info-dumping everything to him all at once. First, the miners.

"Thank you, Mr. Trenton," Teleri says. She takes a seat on the chair opposite Mr. Trenton, gesturing to Ives to take the second chair.

"I believe we do. You were interested in the learning the reasons for the recent vandalism and the assault on Mr. Anderson. With the assistance of Mr. Tunn here, I believe that I've identified the causes of both; and they are different. You have not one, but two different problems; and I have some suggestions for possible avenues to deal with both."

"The first problem has to do with worker relations. It seems that SMC has recently begun using children, magically enhanced with a far greater carrying capacity than they would ordinarily have, to haul carts of ore about. Some of the miners are unhappy about this, for two reasons. First, some of them are superstitious about the use of magic in a mine. I tend to think that particular complaint has more to do with a general resistance to change than anything else, and that by itself it would not amount to more than grumbling."

"The second reason for their unhappiness is, I believe, more serious, as its roots lie in racial tensions. It seems that the children selected to work in the mines have tended come from the orc tribe that recently settled here. The perception among the miners is that the foremen disproportionately favor orcs over the other races when hiring children to haul mine carts."

"I am not certain whether this is actually the case or not, as it was difficult to get a full count of the child workers in the midst of their workday. But it doesn't really matter; the perception of undue favoritism led some of the miners to express their displeasure by vandalizing SMC headquarters. That was the source of the vandalism at the HQ building."

Teleri clears her throat and coughs lightly. "Pardon me," she says. "Could I perhaps trouble you for a glass of water? And please let me know if you have questions at this juncture, or if you would prefer I move on to suggested remedies for this particular problem."

Campaign info Maps Sheets Current date: May 30th

Trenton looks very concerned at the news that his operations are being sabotaged by his own workers. "This is troubling, very very troubling. Who are these disgruntled workers?" When Teleri asks for water, he nods briskly "Of course, of course." He sticks his head out of his office and calls out "Sarah! A pitcher of water, if you please. And three cups." Sarah soon brings a ceramic pitcher of lukewarm water into the office along with three ceramic cups. Trenton looks to Teleri sternly "I think I know exactly the solution I have in mind but... I will hear yours as you've proven quite useful."

"Thank you," Teleri says, taking a sip of water.

"Mr. Trenton, I'm afraid I must decline to name my sources for this information," she says once her throat is a bit clearer. "If I am going to be doing this sort of work, I need people to speak freely to me, often on topics which might invite retaliation. If it got about that I turned people's names over, why, pretty soon I would find that no one was willing to speak with me any longer. So you will have to content yourself with what is going on and why, not who precisely is involved."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17

I, the player, have this sneaking suspicion that Mr. Trenton is a short-sighted jerk whose solution involves docking wages, firing people and time in the stocks. What's Teleri's read on how Mr. Trenton is likely to approach this?

Campaign info Maps Sheets Current date: May 30th

I'm not sure how Teleri would know specifics without a K local as well.

Trenton looks at Teleri with anger and frustration evident on his face. "Young miss, I must insist you allow me to run my own business and deal with any bad apples who would intentionally destroy company property." He looks with anger to Ives. "And you, boy! Would you have vandals walking about, free to continue their disruptions?"

I think it's quite reasonable for him to want to punish vandals so he'll need some convincing to drop this point.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out whether he seems like an authoritarian or not.

"Consider, Mr. Trenton, that your workers have not registered a complaint about the situation directly with you or your underlings. For whatever reason, they were unwilling to do so. That breakdown in communication meant that you had no idea that a problem existed until it had already developed to the point where your workers felt it necessary to damage company property to vent their feelings."

"Now I have uncovered the cause of the problem for you. I'm sorry you do not like my methods. It would have been better for me to make you aware up front that I do not reveal the names of sources in cases like these; and I apologize for not alerting you to that fact. However, my methods work, and I will not compromise them. Take comfort in the fact that you are getting the information you require."

Diplomacy, re: not revealing sources: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

"Now, as to dealing with the situation, I suggest a three-fold strategy. First -- because you are correct that chopping up the headquarters is not an acceptable way to air a grievance, I suggest docking two days' pay from all mine workers, making it clear that you are punishing everyone for the actions of the few unidentified miscreants. That will certainly recoup the expense of repairing a few boards. And in addition, it will give everyone an incentive to stop the hotheads in the mixture from doing anything similar in future."

"Second -- the root cause of this problem is the perception that the foremen are unduly favoring orcs when hiring children to work in the mines; specifically, that they just pick the ones with green skin and never evaluate the others to see who is actually stronger. To address that, I suggest testing the children who wish to work in the mine to see which of them are truly strongest. The trials should be public, so that everyone can see that SMC chooses the strongest children, regardless of race -- which is, after all, the point. You want the strongest children because they can haul more, faster, than the weaker ones. I suggest making it a sort of contest, in which the children undertake feats of strength such as seeing who can throw a rock the furthest, or lift the biggest load without magical assistance, and so on. I believe that there is a holiday coming up in the next few weeks; combine the strength trials with that. Make it a yearly event. Perhaps even offer prizes to the top contestants in addition to offering them jobs in the mines. The festive atmosphere would likely help with worker morale -- and seeing that the jobs go to the demonstrably strongest will help defuse accusations of favoritism."

"Third -- you desperately need a way to learn about issues of this sort early, before they develop to the point of violence. You need honest, accurate information about what your workers are thinking and feeling. In the absence of such information, you will undoubtedly find yourself blindsided again in future. To that end, I recommend establishing a suggestion box: someplace where your workers can leave anonymous, written feedback for you. Complaints, suggestions, anything they want to say but can't bring themselves to do in person. While I am sure many of your workers are illiterate, there are undoubtedly a few people in town who could write such things for them, if necessary. In this way, you would gain information you need to nip problems in the bud, rather than having to bring in people like me later. In my experience, preventing a problem is more effective -- and certainly less expensive -- than trying to fix it after the fact."

"Ideally, I'd suggest announcing all of these at once, so that they are hearing the bad and good news together, so as to take the sting out of the bad news. I'm sure you wouldn't want to cause a riot; which is, I believe, a possibility. Unpleasant things happen during riots, and I devoutly hope to avoid one here."

Teleri speaks as calmly and reasonably as possible, carefully framing her arguments in terms of what is beneficial to SMC.

He seems like a fairly moderate manager. He has to be authoritarian to a significant extent but he doesn't throw his authority around for fun.

Trenton considers for a moment and then sighs. "You're suggestions are good, Miss. I'll consider them." He checks something in a folder then scribbles some calculations. "But a two day dock would earn me a riot. An hour dock for all the workers will cover it. The damage was more troubling than destructive." He looks back up to the two of you "So my vandalism problem has been solved?"

Ok! I guess I was expecting another Colonel Smythe. XD

Oh good, Teleri thinks, as Trenton mentions a smaller penalty. I don't really have any idea how much the miners make.

"Only partly, sir," she says. "As I said, there were two different groups of vandals. The vandalism of the shed by the river -- and the assault on Mr. Anderson -- were perpetrated by the local fey. Although I believe this is inadvertent on SMC's part, runoff water from the mine is poisoning them slowly. Unsurprisingly, they are unhappy about that. Mr. Tunn, could you please tell Mr. Trenton about the situation in the forest?"

Teleri begins rummaging about in her belt pouch, extracting the vials containing water samples from the mine and river.

Naw no need to subject you to more of that. Smythe's not the only authority figure I can play, thank goodness.

Trenton looks to Ives with curiosity, waiting to hear what this strange lad may have to add.

I'm really curious about this Smythe now

Ives takes a big breath and removes his turban to show the vines and flowers in his air, and tries to talk. "I ah... ummm... I'm really nervous you know. Listen. I live in the woods, and I have for a long time. You, ah..., you will probably call me crazy, but the trees and the plants out there, they ah... talk... to... me. I hear their voice and they hear mine. The smallest seeds, they are like babies and say "Goo Goo" when I listen to them. The tallest oldest trees are like grumpy old men. You should...ah...yeah. You should hear my Uncle Spruce talk. He complains about the weather all day long. Too much rain, not enough rain, too much sun, too many moles around his roots, and so on and so on. I don't know if you believe me. But try to listen to me. I speak for the forest."

Ives pauses for a breath and takes a glance at Miss Teleri to make sure he is doing okay.

Trenton's eyebrows rise higher and higher on his head as Ives talks about his discussions with plants.

"Go on," Teleri says encouragingly. "You're doing fine."

Perhaps Trenton has a potted plant in his office?

He does indeed! It's a small shrub he keeps at the window.

Ives looks around the room- a potted plant by the window! :D

He reaches out to see if this plant has a voice...

Talk w Plants: 3/5 uses left.

"Hello, my little friend! How is the sunshine today? This man here, the one that waters you, doesn't think I know how to to talk to you. He probably doesn't even know you can think and speak! Can you tell me something that he does in here that no one else knows about?"

Ives:

The plant is barely smart enough to answer Ives questions. It speaks haltingly "Sun good. No one else know? Not sure. Man water in mornings. Sometimes, late night, hear man singing and humming to self."

Trenton looks at Ives with extreme skepticism written plainly across his middle-aged face. "Well... um... this is rather irregular..." He scratches his balding head, perplexed as to how to proceed.

"So...ah.. listen. Your plant is telling me that you water him in the morning, and late at night you sing and hum to yourself. He isn't a very smart plant. I think you need to fertilize him a little bit more, build up the brain power."

Ives starts talking with a little more confidence.

"I DO speak for the forest. And right now, the forest is very unhappy. All of the water that comes from the mine goes straight into the river. All of the plants near the water are getting sick. The naiads, fey that live in the water, are getting sick and dying. You need to stop dumping bad water into our river, right NOW. The trees and fey are unhappy, and getting angrier and angrier. They are going to start attacking if you do not stop. Maybe they already are."

Teleri nods. "I believe the attacks have started already. The vandalism at the shed appears to have been done with tools far smaller than the ones used by your miners, suggesting it was undertaken by creatures smaller than the miners. Mr. Anderson testified that his assailants came from the river, and his wounds appear to have been caused by blunt arrows -- very similar to these, which were fired at Madog, Dylan, Rhys and I yesterday by a pair of naiads."

She waits to see Mr. Trenton's reaction.

Trenton's skepticism suddenly turns into a look of surprise, admiration, and embarrassment mixed oddly together. He coughs "Yes um... that is... factual." His cheeks turn red at the mention of his late night singing in his office. "Alright. You've convinced me. We'll do what we can to divert the water. Any ideas you have on that front would be most welcome. But I can only authorize this expenditure if you have confirmation from the... Fey or whoever is behind these attacks... that they will cease."

It sounds like you guys already have a good idea. K eng and/or K nat would help with its implementation but aren't strictly necessary.

Teleri smiles. "In the short term, I believe it would be sufficient to make a holding pond some distance from the river and divert the runoff into it. Since you have a large number of miners at your disposal who are accustomed to digging through hard stone, I imagine it should be fairly straightforward to dig a large hole and a channel for the water to flow through."

"In the longer term it may be necessary to create some sort of formal filter. Alas, that is far outside my area of expertise. I gather such things involve layers of sand -- and maybe charcoal? But I couldn't tell you how to build one. You may wish to consult an engineer, either one here if you happen to have one on staff, or else a consultant from Dinas Diwydiant."

"And yes, we definitely need to find and speak with whoever is responsible for organizing these attacks, and get them to stop so that you will have time to fix the runoff issue."

She looks troubled. "I am not certain how to find that person," she confesses. "But whoever it is has already devoted some significant resources to the effort. Look at this."

Reaching into her belt pouch again, she places the ruby that Ives retrieved from the giant frog on Mr. Trenton's desk.

"You may recall that a giant frog attacked the party that went to investigate the dead naiad yesterday. Well, we disabled it but left it alive -- and the same frog then attacked Mr. Tunn, who killed it with his bare hands. This gem was embedded in its forehead. Tell me, Mr. Trenton, how familiar are you with magic?"

Mr. Trenton nods at talk of a holding pond. "Hmmm... Yes that seems feasible, should a negotiated settlement be reached." He looks blankly at the gem. "No I've never seen anything like that. But it looks valuable. I could call in one of our magical staff but I should warn you they are generally only capable of performing tasks well within the confirmation of their training." He nods vigorously at rhe idea of finding whom to talk to. "Yes please do that. Odd that whoever it is only targeted the stables and that shed. Why that arrangement?"

"I have a passing familiarity with magic myself," Teleri says, with a flush of embarrassment spreading across her cheeks. "And I can tell you what that stone did. It was altering the frog's mind; causing it to think differently than it usually would. I believe it was put there to make the frog unnaturally aggressive."

Trenton nods firmly "Yes that sounds well. Please solve this problem as soon as possible. Then we will begin construction on the pond. I can award you a partial disbirsement of the reward for what you have already accomplished. Let's see... 20 Brenins each." He walks to a wall safe, unlocks it, and counts out 20 platinum coins for each of you.
