"There are many problems that certain members of the church think are beneath the position of High Cardinal to handle. But their inability to handle such issues properly has lead to the Berivian War, as well as other accounts of suffering. I will not sit idly by in an ivory tower across the sea while it is in my power to prevent such acts." As the High Cardinal speaks the noble crowd (as well as certain members of the guard and Knights of Theveste) look more and more uncomfortable. Marcellun steps up and clears his throat. "Pardon my rudeness, your Holiness, but your day is scheduled and we would not wish you to fall behind. In addition the nobles stand idly in the heat."

The High Cardinal waves a hand dismissively. "Yes yes, we shall get to what is important, don't fuss over me." The way he inflects 'what is important' seems to suggest he already tends to deviate from what is planned. "It seems I must be off, but I..." The eyes of the High Cardinal meet with Esdras. "Ah, young Esdras! My we were just talking about where you had gone off to! Ah how unfortunate, were you involved in this debacle as well?" He asks with a curious smile as he settles in for more talking, much to the chagrin of Marcellun and the nobles.

Cass' eyes were sharp, sometimes too sharp, and as a result his right eye was temporarily blinded by the waves of magical energy emanating from the High Cardinal. He quickly pushed the loupe away from his eye and began rubbing it vigoriously, the phosphenes from doing little to assuage the temporary blindness.

His vision would reutrn eventually, and he still had one good eye to see through for the next few minutes until it did. He listened idly to the High Cardinal and couldn't help but smile. Cass had no use for religion and had seen it corrupted and use to push hateful agendas. But every now and then there was someone like the High Cardinal who really did seem to be good at heart.

He lowered his head slightly, partially out of respect and partially because his right eye still stung. Mentally he began cataloging the names he was hearing - choosing to remain silent for now. He had no desire to try and speak to nobility like the High Cardinal and was unsure if he even could without making a fool of himself, so he opted for the safer route and simply listened in.

Esdras is clearly caught by surprise as the High Cardinal speaks directly to him. However he is fast in his recovery, bowing slightly to the older man. "Forgive my surprise, your Holiness, both for being known and recognized and for being called 'young'." At 41 years old, Esdras could not remember the last time someone called him 'young Esdras'. He smiles. "I deduce your Holiness have already been introduced to my father and family, and I'm sorry for not being present at that opportunity. I assure your Holiness that my absence was simply an inconvenience and not a desire to avoid such meeting."

Esdras then notices Marcellun and the other nobles' discomfort and thinks about a way to help them by suggesting the High Cardinal to keep with the schedule. "About this sad situation, I'm glad that sir Marcellun arrived just in time to settle the situation with no damage." He positions himself in such a way as to suggest that they should continue to talk along the way.

Still perched on her ledge, Topaz has a clear view of the conversation and the reaction to it. She can't help but smile as the nobles look more and more ill at ease. Looks like they don' know wha' to make of th'Cardinal actually seemin' like he cares! They could take lessons.

Wonder if th'Cardinal knows wha' people are doin' in the dark around here. Maybe he'd do somethin' about slavin' if he knew. But it hardly seems like the time to speak up -- best not to draw too much attention. Still, it's good to know that at least one person in authority might care, if it comes to it. She makes a mental note to tell Pella what happened, whenever they finally meet up.

The High Cardinal gives a wry smile. "Take it from someone my age, savor every last time someone calls you 'young' still. It hurts even more when they start calling you 'wise' instead." He chuckles lightly.

When Esdras mentions meeting his family the High Cardinal shakes his head. "I only met them momentarily in passing. Tomorrow on the journey to Theveste we shall dine and have proper introductions." As Esdras explains his absence the old man gives a short belly laugh. "Oh I wouldn't have blamed you anyways! Rather stuffy, isn't it? Having to go through all the formal introductions. That is why I requested wine. I hear that Yundal has some truly unique vintages with their rare assortment of mountain berries."

The High Cardinal goes back to a more serious face. "Indeed, we were fortunate for his quick action..." He takes a moment to look at the people gathered around the now-collapsed DAMAGE INDUSTRIES booth, and glances at the nobles momentarily before smiling at Esdras. "...of course, this is merely a symptom of a larger problem. Indeed I think that more needs to be done about this. Pardon me!.." The High Cardinal raises his voice over the din of the crowd to get Draegar's attention.

"This situation was unacceptable, and I would like to make it up to you. In addition I want to devote some time talking to people with firsthand experience, especially those outside my typical circle within the church. To that end, I invite you and your friends to join my cruise to Theveste." He gestures widely, encompassing all of the people present inside the ring of knights. "You will spend the day as my honored guests, With rooms and meals tailored to your liking. I will handle any vessel transportation costs for your return trips as well." He gives a broad smile as the nobles behind him stare in disbelief. "Yes, this will be excellent. A couple of the local inventors..." He says to indicate Cass and Draegar "...and one of the dockers I have heard so much about." He says, his gaze landing on Topaz. "You do perform, yes? I would love to see what you have to offer."

Topaz:
That's...odd. You're disguised as a servant right now, so it shouldn't be obvious you're a docker. How would the High Cardinal have deduced that so quickly? Is he just that perceptive?

Esdras gains a +5 bonus (for being a noble involved with Briecan relations) and Topaz gains a +10 bonus (for the rumor she heard earlier) to the below sense motive check.

Sense Motive DC 25 (hunch):
Although the High Cardinal does seem want to talk to the people present, the harassment situation is only a small part of that. There seems to be a combination of curiosity about local culture and technology, interest in talking to somebody with Skive blood, irritating the nobles just for the sake of it, and an overall desire to shake things up and keep his traveling time interesting.

Topaz is taken aback by the sudden invitation -- and the Cardinal's apparent ability to see right through her disguise -- and her face reflects the shock. I heard he was lookin' to take some folk on board, but sure weren't expectin' it to be ME! Especially not dressed like this. Don' think he was close enough to hear me singin' before, so how'd he know?

Still, it's an opportunity not likely to come again. And she appreciates the Cardinal's apparent desire to poke the nobles a bit. She's not sure how to get word to Pella in this crowd, but undoubtedly word would spread of what happened and maybe she'd hear that way. Best be on my guard aroun' this Cardinal, he's sharper'n a knife, but this could be a chance to get some inside info.

"Honored, your Holiness," she stammers, making her best attempt at a curtsey as she climbs down from the ledge. "If ye can spare me a minute or two t'change, I can put on somethin' a bit more suitable to th'occasion," she says, gesturing at her backpack.

Draegar's brows rose. He prided himself on being able to roll with whatever life threw his way. He'd long since given up on trying to makes sense of why things happened the way they did. He was just a magnet for weirdness, and if he was being honest, he liked it that way. This though... this was a new kind of weird. It didn't seem right to correct the Cardinal and inform him that he didn't know any of these people, but they did seem to be good sorts. They might not be friends now, but he could see the opportunity for what it was.

"I'd be a fool to refuse," the big Skive nodded.

The High Cardinal smiles in response to Topaz and Draegar. "Excellent, I look forward to it. Would you be interested as well?" He directs to Cass.

"Please, do not feel rushed." He gestures to the marble buildings of the city. "I am to spend the day here in Caranusca and will not be departing to Theveste until the morning. I will entrust Marcellun with making sure you are allowed on board." As he is mentioned the knight nods, face stoic.

Esdras smiles at the High Cardinal's comment about his age. "Your Holiness is indeed correct and I share your opinion about the formal introductions. When a was younger I loved them but now after... now they are a nuisance. Fortunatelly my opinion is not shared by my brother and father, otherwise Ra'an would be considered perhaps a bit unwelcoming."

At his invitation, Esdras watches the others, interested in knowing if they were accepting or not. He imagined they will, for that was a once in a life opportunity. He remained silently, for as the High Cardinal mentioned, he and his family were already invited to the same trip.

The first thought that sprang to Cass' mind was a horrified but what do I wear?

He certainly did not have better clothes than his grease stained outfit he currently had on and little to offer to purchase a set of tailored cloth suitably for dining with nobility.

The second thought that sprang to Cass' mind was a horrified but what do I talk about? He had nothing in common with any of these nobles and had little to offer in the way of interesting subjects, no doubt. Regardless, he nodded in agreement, "Of course, happy to attend."

He'd solve the problems sooner or later - but for now, as always, he kept the gears turning in his mind, sorting out solutions. He could probably magic up a cleaner outfit, and he was clever enough to roll with whatever conversation topics came up. No use worrying about it at this moment though.

He awkwardly offered a bow of thanks to conclude his portion of the conversation before slinking back behind the others.

With the final invitee accepting the offer, the High Cardinal gives a warm smile. "Excellent. Now I have something to look forward to on the cruise tomorrow. Marcellun, make sure the proper people are notified of my honored guests, and make arrangements to ensure the proper treatment." The knight inclines his head in acknowledgement, using the moment to express his urgent desire to keep the royal procession moving. The High Cardinal gives him a knowing smile. "But I must be off for now, very busy day. May His glory shine upon you, as it does on all His children." With a final sweep of his robe, the High Cardinal returns to his royal procession and it moves onwards, several of the nobles glancing at the people he spent so much time talking with.

Marcellun hangs around briefly to pass on some information. "I will need your full names. Other than that, show up at the docks an hour after sunrise. I will make all of the other arrangements." He spends a long moment looking at each person as they give their names, eyes flashing in the sun.

Clan names were important to Skives, so not having one was definitely strange to anyone who knew of Skive culture.

"Caspian Abernathy, of Abernathy and Sons." Cass said with some pride. Though his family wasn't famous at all - he was proud of his blue-collar heritage and that someone like him would get a chance to dine with someone like the High Cardinal.

Cass blinked in surprise, though he did his best not to let it on. He barely caught the flicker of magic from the High Cardinal, it was silent and stilled?! He wasn't as knowledgeable in the divine magics as he was the arcane but he had no doubt that the effort required to do such a thing would have been great, indeed. A newfound respect, both at the power that Marcellun wielded and that he was a man of caution.

Cass resolved to watch the Cardinal closely tonight - curious to see what else he could learn about the man.

Marcellun nods in response to each name as it is spoken, repeating them aloud to assure proper pronunciation and memorization. He raises a slight eyebrow at Draegar and Topaz, but says nothing. Once done he wipes the sweat from his brow once more and dons his winged helm. "I will see you tomorrow morn than. Enjoy your stay in Caranusca. May you walk in His light and guidance." The knight turns and walks briskly to catch up with the royal procession.

Alright, well done! Esdras is back with the nobles, but the rest of you are left standing with a group of semi-strangers who you have apparently been bunched together with. Topaz and Cass both seem to have at least some plans for the rest of the day, how about you Draegar? As the procession leaves and most of the crowd drifts back to whatever they were doing, Topaz turns to Cass and Draegar, shaking her head. "Did tha' really jus' happen?" she says. "Not wha' I was expectin' for my mornin', for sure."

"I don't even know what to wear," Cass lamented with a sigh as he looked to his stained workman clothes. "Well..." he paused and reached into his rucksack, pulling out a small glass bottle stoppered with a dropper.

He unscrewed it and dropped a single drop of the clear liquid on one of the stains of his clothes, whispering in Sarvic as he did so: "emundabit," and almost instantly the stain washed itself away as the drop of liquid hit it.

The droplet quickly spread throughout the rest of his clothes, stains vanishing as the magic worked its way through his garments. Soon enough his clothes were clean and Cass screwed the pipette back onto the bottle and tucked it away and looked down at himself for a moment before sighing again. He still didn't look suited for a dinner with the High Cardinal. "Mind if I join you?" he called after Topaz, not even waiting for a response before following after her.

Spoiler:
Cass cast prestidigation using its cleaning properties to clean himself up a bit. He still doesn't think he looks fit for a dinner but might be overthinking it.

Cass is going to join Topaz for clothes shopping for a bit. He's not going to spend more than five gold on a new set of clothes. And while he's shopping he'll keep an eye out for any other interesting things of note.

Draegar grunted his affirmation to Topaz's surprise, and was about to reply, then something dawned on him and robbed him of his words.

He looked at Caspian like he was seeing him for the first time. The big man was a stoic by nature, but he had the world's worst poker face when something managed to take him off guard.

Caspian f+@@ing Abernathy? What are the odds? Do I tell him? Can I trust him? He was a nice guy when we were kids, but it's been a long time. People change. He did help me out here, though. Not even knowing me, he tried to help. Same as when we first met. Coming to my rescue again, standing up bullies hiding behind badges. Only this time it was an armed guard, not a twelve year old prefect. Not surprised he didn't recognized me. The Proctors always hated when I used the name my mother gave me. I don't remember if I ever told him what it was.

He took too long to decide what to do, and Cass was walking off after the angry-cute street performer.

Oh well. He'll be on this theocratic pleasure cruise too. Plenty of time to figure out if he's still the person I used to know.

With the excitement over, Draegar moved his booth somewhere a little less packed, set up shop again, and got back to work.

I'm ready to move on if everyone else did.

The group quickly separates. Tomorrow there would be time to catch up, but for now each has their own business to attend to.

~~~Topaz of Flint & Caspian "Cass" Abernathy~~~
Cass invites himself to go shopping with Topaz and tags along next to her, welcome or not. The two must venture to the 'arts' section of the festival, where there are a number of tailors, dressmakers, milliners, and various other clothe-makers of various sorts selling their wares. There is a fair amount of diversity of options, but there is a significant selection of local fashions to choose from.
Let me know generally what you're looking for. You can find fashion from Brieca and Almor rather easily, find the occasional Thane booth, and if you are very dedicated may be able to locate something from Skive. Traditional Briecan clothing is conservative in nature and has a European feel to it. The more expensive and fancy you go tends towards more deep and vibrant monotone outfits with metallic trimmings, with anything looking pious having the traditional white and gold of the church.
~~~Draegar~~~

Draegar moves his booth a little further away from the outlet street near the docks and sets up again. It's a long, exhausting day, and Draegar's tech savvy is tested as much as his ability to win people over. At the end of the day he comes out with a neat profit!

You make 150 gold! I'm not going to nickel and dime all the details, but the overall concept is this is the net gain after taking into account the crafting cost and the permit.

Cass quickly locates a merchant from Thane in the Arts section of the festival and plops down a few coins to purchase an outfit he finds suitable, in muted colors, before wishing Topaz a farwell, "See you tonight, I guess?"

With that done, Cass stuffed the clothing into his pack and made his way to Nicodemus, regretting that he had not taken the time to learn any magic to alter his appearance. Maybe someday soon, he mused, before arriving at the designated meeting place to fill in Nicodemus on everything that had happened.

Cass goes for something simple and straitforward, finding a middle-class piece of fashion from Thane. Something to mark his station but not embellish or lighten his coin purse too much.

He finds his way back to the meeting spot, looking around to see Nicodemus sitting outside at a table. The old man has a plate of goat cheese and mixed berries that he absentmindedly picks from in addition to a large pastry with a dark red filling spilling out, his attention buried in a pile of papers in front of him. When Cass walks over he looks up, then exclaims "Ah, he returns! The High Cardinal showing up early sure threw a gear into our plans, didn't it? On the bright side I managed to find those berry pastries I like that for the life of me don't exist anywhere in Almor. I was even generous enough to save one for you!" He says, gesturing for Cass to sit down and help himself. "So, what have you learned of the booths so far?"

As Cass leaves, Topaz smiles and waves him on his way. She finds a bright scarf and some inexpensive silver bracelets to add to her outfit for tomorrow. Not spending more than a couple of gold here either. She doesn't actually need an outfit, thanks to the sleeves the Whispers lent her, but she figures she'd better buy a couple of things that Cass would recognize if he sees them tomorrow, so it's not too weird when she shows up in something he hasn't seen her buy.

After that, she makes her way through the crowd back to the alley where she started the morning and waits for Pella and the others.

~~~Topaz of Flint~~~
Topaz finds her way back to the alleyway without any issue, were the men are waiting. They greet Topaz, and after a bit of time Pella slips in. "Perfect, we all made it back ok. His Holiness showing up early was a bit chaotic. All right, report."
She shows the wrapped parcel.
"The other... well, due t' some wranglin' wi' a guard tryin' to steal a vendor's permit catchin' the Cardinal's attention when he came through, I..." She shakes her head, still not quite believing it. "I seem t've been invited t'go on his cruise t'Theveste tomorra. Me, th'vendor, a noble who tried t'stop th'guard, an' another inventor type who I used t'see in the Flint bars now'n'again who was also there. He remembered me from singin'." She pauses. ~~~Topaz of Flint~~~
Jax grabs the parcel with wide eyes. "You found pork?! I don' think I ever had it..." He muses.
Pella's eyes go wide in surprise. "Wha...the High Cardinal? How on Ikeroth did you swing that?" Once told the story she shakes her head. "Wow. Bet the nobles have their knickers in knots over this. Still, I don't know if it's a good idea to go along with this. I doubt Forg is smuggling anybody right under the High Cardinal's nose."
"That's odd." Pella says. "Why would they be paid by the city but not be official? Mercenaries or something? That's real suspicious."
"You learn anything else?" She says to the group at large.
Jax shakes his head. "Inns so busy they'd hardly give me th' time o' day. Have a' idea or two though, people talking 'bout strange out o' towners."
"I had a bit mo' luck." Puck offers. "Didn't get no specific rumors, but I managed a peak at the dockin' schedule. Problem is, far as I ca' tell notin' on record meets what Forg would need ta smuggle anybody out. Unless he plans on fightin' his way out through the docks."
Pella frowns. "Odd. Even smugglers have to schedule something under false pretenses. I did pick up a couple rumors of strange boats and foreigners. Something about a ship dropping off a couple of people between guard shifts, and a fancy ship that bribed the guards and won't let anybody near it."
"We need to decide what to spend our time on. Ideas?"
”I agree it smells rotten, but is it our kind’o rotten?” Topaz asks. ”Would the city be payin’ someone like Forg?” She considers. ”I heard abou’ the people gettin’ dropped off. One o’ them supposed t’have a tattoo on their right hand. Don’ know what tattoo, though. I wondered about them, but if Forg has a cargo of folks t’unload, wouldn’t ‘e want his ship closer in?
Heard about th’ fancy ship, too. There was also another ‘un, a ship what dropped off three folks. They go back t’ the ship every night. Anchored outside th’city. Weren’t sure if that’d be close enough for Forg t’unload or not.”
She cocks her head, thinking. ”Th’fancy ship seems ‘spicious t’me. Bit too obvious, though, maybe. Would Forg be tha’ showy?”
Knowledge:Local: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 What do I know about Forg’s habits? I guess probably not much with that roll...
”And as fer tomorra — I know Forg probably wouldn’t be deliverin’ folk under the nobles’ noses like tha’, but anyone who’s anyone’ll be there. Might be things worth learnin’. An’ who knows — if Forg’s sellin’ t’ someone wi’ big money, they might be there an’ might let somethin’ slip.”
Topaz knows Forg's description as well as his general objectives, but doesn't know him well enough to be familiar with his habits and mannerisms.
Pella smiles at Topaz. "You have good instincts. I don't know exactly how he plans to get himself off of Yundal, only that he was planning to use the confusion and the fact the local law enforcement would be preoccupied to slip through."
"We don't really know about Forg's habits. We don't know if he's the smash and flee type, or the slip something right under your nose type. But with how long he's survived, I'd say he's closer to the latter."
"So what, we have four different leads to follow? We should be able to get through all of that in today. What do we want to follow up on first? Or do we want to split up and try to get them done more quickly? Time could be of the essence."
"Not sure how we can find th' ones what got dropped off, either set. Th' fancy ship should be easy 'nough t'find. Sounds like for those, th' docks'll be our best bet. Puck nods. "Happy t' follow up. Just point me in th' right direction."
Pella takes a pause, then nods. "Topaz I think you should go with him. I'd rather not have us alone if I could help it. Jax and I will go investigate the fancy ship. Once we're done we meet back here again, and together we can start asking around for anything about the people that have been dropped off, covering both of the rumors at once. Any questions?"
Topaz nods. "There's a butcher an' a barmaid who'll recognize me, but I'm sure we can come up wi' a story for why I came back. Th' fish the bar had for breakfast was good enough t'be worth comin' back for, anyway!" She looks over at Jax. "Ye'd better keep tha' pork bundle, though. Would look weird if I were still carryin' tha' around!"
Jax chuckles. "All too happy t' hold onto it."
Pella nods. "Stay safe, remember the officials here aren't as likely to be bribed or look the other direction as they are in Almor." The plan decided, the group splits into two.
Puck walks with Topaz, letting her lead the way since she knows where they're going. "So, what's our plan?" He asks.
”Well, first’d be just t’ take another look an’ see if there’s anyone else about. Weren’t too many people there early, jus’ a couple of guards on board. Then, maybe we go back t’the tavern. Probably a few more folks there now who might know somethin’. I didn’ try talkin’ to the guards themselves, didn’t figure that’d go so well askin’ questions withou’ knowin’ more. But if they seem like chattin’ this time, maybe.”
Puck nods, happy to let Topaz take the lead. She was always better than him at the subterfuge part of the job anyways.
Topaz finds a good angle on the docked ship from a few streets down and sees the same two guards, although they have stopped playing their game of throwing knives. The man entertains himself by picking at his nails with a knife while the woman lazily scans the people passing by.
The area is generally more busy as well. It seems that as the day went on more people dispersed away from the docks. Businesses are starting to see more customers and the noise level is slowly rising.
There are definitely more people around now, including at the tavern and the butcher you were at earlier. There are two other inns in the immediate vicinity, and a number of various businesses selling things like jewelry and food and clothing and whatnot. What are you looking to do here?
”Well,” Cass began as he sat down opposite of his mentor, ”The only thing of note was this mechanical spider one of the merchants had. Wasn’t for sale and I didn’t have enough time to study it before other things happened…”
And with that Cass launched into a detailed account of the day’s events so far, down to the number of buttons on the High Cardinal’s outfit that would probably drive casual listeners mad. But Cass always tried to remember and record as much detail as possible. He described as much as he could about the spider before that portion of the story was displaced by the arrival of the High Cardinal. You never know when something inconspicuous turned out to be vastly important. ”…and then I purchased a set of clothes for tonight. I tried to find a book that offered advice on how to have conversations with the nobility. But nothing, unfortunately. Plenty of books about how to talk to women though. I don’t get that. They’re people. Why do you need a book to know how to talk to half the population? Ridiculous. Nobles are different though, right? Not that the noble aren’t people. Well, they are but also they aren’t…” He sighed and waved a hand dismissively, ”You know what I mean.”
And with that he leans back in his chair, plucking a berry from the plate and tossing it into his mouth.
Nico practically spits out a mouthful of berries when Cass tells him of his invitation to the High Cardinal's vessel. "No, you're pulling this old man's leg, surely!" He continues to shake his head in disbelief as Cass finishes the story. "I wouldn't let this opportunity go by. All sorts of powerful connections can be made in such a short amount of time."
Nico laughs, putting a hand on his student's shoulder. "Ah trust me, while navigating talking to nobility will make your head spin, it pales in comparison to finding the right words to keep a woman happy. But let's tackle one challenge at a time, I think you can handle the High Cardinal before a wife." He says with a chuckle. After a moment he stills himself and gets more serious. "There's only so much that can be done about not knowing who is who. You're going to have to accept that a lot of people are going to be throwing around names and titles like they mean something. Do your best to memorize and be interested in what they are doing, even if it seems petty. Especially if it seems petty." He notes, jabbing a piece of cheese. "We have the whole day still to canvas the area for things that may interest our benefactor. You shouldn't let the opportunity tomorrow go by, but remember our first priority here. Education. And to make our investor happy, of course."
Topaz considers the options. They need to find out whether that ship is Forg's, at the very least, and what they're up to.
"Why'nt you go take a look at the guards? Mebbe you'll see somethin' I missed. An' maybe they'd talk to you." The big jailkeep seems a bit more plausible as someone who'd talk to a couple of mercenary-looking guards than a skinny "servant" out shopping. "I'll do a bit o'browsin' myself t'see wha' I can learn, then we can meet up a' tha' inn over there." She points to whichever of the inns she hasn't been to looks most likely to have attracted sailors from the ship, or has the best view of it. "Half an hour?"
The goal is to circulate through some of the shops, window-shopping and talking with shopkeepers or passersby about what's been going on -- obviously most interested in the ship and its crew, but being decently circumspect about it. :) Then meet up at the inn to see what anyone there knows. Basically, continuing the kinds of info-gathering she's been doing, while Puck, with his size and his jail experience, tries to see what he can learn from watching and maybe talking to the guards.
Puck glances over at the ships and narrows his eyes. "Yeah, I'll see if I can learn sometin'. I'll think up sometin'..." He muses as he walks off towards the water.
Meanwhile, Topaz begins perusing around the shops and taverns, window shopping and chatting up the locals. She soon finds herself engrossed with the locals, gossiping and trading small talk with a few dozen different people. The picks up a few rumors, although most of them are repeats of what she heard earlier.
However with some gentle prodding she does learn something new about the docked ships. From an old fisherman she learns that really early in the morning, before the sun rose when the fish bite the best, twenty-some armed people (mostly men) came off the boat and made their way to the docks. What stuck out is that while most of them looked like mercenaries, a few were dressed up in real fancy noble Briecan outfits, and he's positive they were all foreigners.
Well, that would be one way to sneak people in... dress ‘em up as nobles! Though tha doesn’t sound like kids, if they were done up as grown-up nobles. Hard t’say though. An’ if they’re not who we’re lookin’ for, that soun’s like bad news anyway.
Topaz gets what details she can from the old fisherman, hoping to be able to spot this group if they’re still around. After half an hour of gossiping, she makes her way to the inn to wait for Puck. She finds a table and orders an ale, chatting with the server about the news of the morning and keeping an ear open for more news as she waits.
When Puck gets there, she gets him a drink and fills him in briefly and quietly about her discovery. ”Mebbe we should head t’the docks after ‘n’ see if we can hear anythin’ about a group like that. Seems like somethin’ someone woulda noticed. Y’hear anything?”
Puck nods, sipping his drink. "Even wid all those people tha' kinda group would stick out." He sets the drink down and glances around for a moment. "I had a chat wid 'em. Guy is friendly, she's a bit of a..." Puck stops himself. "Uhh, less friendly." He smiles sheepishly. "Anyway...say he was hired f' the whole day, but did sumtin' dumb last night and hurt 'is back, so he got stuck on guard duty. Wouldn't give much detail cus tha' girl kept sideyin' 'im. Kinda got cold when I ask what 'is cargo was." He says with a raised brow.
Esdras accompanied Marcellum and Caellus back to the docks where he met his family once more. His sister, Isabella, and his father, Haltius, where clearly unhappy about his wanderings but after he told them about the whole incident with the guard, both of them agreed that it was not his fault to have been absent for such a long time. His sister was clearly more frustrated than annoyed. On the other hand, Gerard, his brother, appeared to be pleased, as was Raul.
Nevertheless, Esdras was much more concerned about his last ghost, specially since he had a limited amount of time to reach it. Even if something in Carasnusca had awakened this new spirit, since he would have to leave the following day, the spirit could easily once more become dormant... and he was decided to avoid it. As many things in life, there were also pros and cons in doing that. Esdras was fully aware of the toil to his mind that another awakened spirit would add but the chance of deciphering another piece of the puzzle was far too tempting.
After a couple more social meetings, Esdras and his family were invited to lunch at one of his father's oldest friends' house. The Jahaars, as Esdras understood, made quite a fortune during the Berivian Wars. For his sanity, Esdras refrained himself from inquiring about how. After the long lunch, Esdras accompanied Isabella to the Harashneer Street, a small and secluded section of the open market specialized in the famous Briecan rugs. Even if tedious, it was a bit relaxing in comparison with all that happened earlier. On their way back to where they were housed, Esdras once more noticed the blue banner, this time standing still near a spice vendor on a side street. After distracting his sister with some gorgeous Gyscan Silk of a vendor, Esdras approached the banner.
Now he was finally able to clearly see him... actually her. She was slim but strong and with an average height. On top of a light leather armor, she was wearing layers upon layers of red, orange and ocre silk. Her fingers, ears, neck and head were adorned with copper jewelry. Her face and head were covered with a type of burka that revealed her olive skin and her green eyes. She was pierced by the pole of a banner, which entered her between her shoulder blades and exited above the left side of her hips.
"Ilaayachee..." Esdras talked to her in his mind. She turned her head slowly with sadness and confusion in her eyes, holding a bunch Cardamon pods in her spectral hands. Cardamom... so it was simply that. I recall tasting it on the rogan josh. He then expanded his senses, trying to feel either Gideon or Jaidev for information but neither of them were present. "Calm yourself, lady, for I am your friend. I know you are confused and lost. If you allow me, I'd like to help you..."
Kelish:
"Cardamom..."
To be continued after I get some rest!
Topaz raises an eyebrow at Puck's last comment. "Wouldn' talk abou' the cargo, eh? Well, I s'pose that's not 'spicious in'n of itself, most people might not answer tha' question. But still." She finishes her drink. "Let's go see if'n we can find anythin' abou' this group o' mercenaries and nobles what ain't actually nobles, shall we?"
They make their way toward the docks. Topaz chats up people as they pass -- at this food stall and that vendor's booth and the kids getting underfoot as they chase each other around and the beggar on the corner asking for a pittance in Azgaar's name to honor this great day. Someone must've seen something -- a big group like that would've made an impression even in the midst of all the festivity and hubbub.
Topaz leads Puck down to the docks, continuing to chat up the locals for any information on her quarry. Her search leads her to a local docker, a young Briecan man, who's busy getting the port ready for the rest of today's shipments. He continues to work and tie ropes as he talks to Topaz. "Yeah, I 'member that group you're talkin' 'bout. Got here real early. Thought it was odd for them nobles to have so many guards with 'em. They kinda hung 'round for a bit, then when everybody else started showin' up for the festival all the guards just up an' left into the crowd, and the nobles joined the other ones by the dock behind the Theveste Knights. Must have gone off with his Holiness. Weren't locals I don' think, but were all dressed up in Briecan noble outfits." Topaz presses the kid for any more details. "Uhh, I saw them 'fore the crowds got here, so I got a pretty good look at some of 'em." He describes that there were three men dressed up as nobles...and as he describes the last one Topaz realizes he is describing Forg!
Nice nat 20! Alright what's the plan from here?
Topaz manages to control her face and not curse until she and Puck get clear of the kid, though her mind is racing. Formless take me, he was there this mornin' in the crowd an' I didn't know it!
Once they can get to a more private place, she says to Puck, "Well tha's some news, eh? We'd best get back to Pella soonest and let her know. What's he doin' hidin' among th'nobles? An' where did his guards go? We got t'find him. Last I saw, th'crowd o'nobles were all followin' th'Cardinal but I don' know where they went after tha'."
They start back to the rendezvous point, Topaz keeping eyes and ears open as they go for news of where the Cardinal's entourage of nobles might have gone after the morning's procession.
As Topaz and Puck head back to rendezvous with the others, Topaz wonders about where the High Cardinal and his entourage of nobles and knights may be headed. She remembers overhearing conversation about them staying in the main church of Azgaar here in Caranusca. Although it is technically a church, it's also a lavish manor and a fortified garrison, looming high over the rest of the city. It seems they will be staying there the rest of the day before departing tomorrow morning for Theveste.
Topaz and Puck meet up with the others in the same spot, where the others are already waiting. Jax looks mirthful while Pella looks annoyed. Once they're spotted Pella raises her voice. "A luxury pleasure cruise! The ship is literally just a fancy whorehouse owned by some particularly rich noble who likes to keep his business private, because his business is having an entire ship of women to himself! When I went up to talk they asked me if I was there to join! To f&@#in' join!" She seethes as Jax holds back his laughter behind her. "I hope you two had better luck." She grumbles.
"Wha', really?" Topaz scowls, sharing Pella's anger. "Tha's just gross." She glares at Jax, then drops her voice. "We got news, all right. Crew o'twenty guards an' three folk who ain't Briecan dressed as Briecan nobles went from th'ship early this mornin'. Guards scattered into th'crowd an' the nobles joined th'other nobles. An' from wha' one o' those who saw 'em said, one o' those dressed as nobles was Forg!" She takes a breath. "I think th'nobles are all stayin' in th'church till tomorra's cruise wi' the cardinal." She frowns. "I shoulda seen 'im in th'crowd this mornin', though things were a bit distractin' at th'time."
Jax can't make himself meet Topaz's gaze, staring down at the street and shoulders shaking as he controls his laughter.
Pella listens intently, then claps Topaz on the shoulder. "Yes! We have him!" She smiles. "And lucky for us, we don't even have to come up with a plan to infiltrate. You've already been personally invited onto the cruise. Maybe it is a good idea to take up his offer after all." Her excitement slowly fades. "But wait, we're not on the same ticket." She says, indicating herself as well as Jax and Puck. "You'd be on your own in there...that's risky, I don't like it."
F Human (low class urbanite) Bard (Street Performer) 3/Rogue (chameleon) 1 | HP 27/27 | AC 17 (touch 13, flat 14) (+2 dodge in urban environments) | F +2 R +8 W +4 | CMB +2 CMD 15 | Init +3 | Per +8
Topaz thinks. "Th'knight what the Cardinal put in charge was payin' real close attention t'who got invited, so I don' think it'd be easy t'sneak you all on, no.
But, th'Cardinal said he wanted t'hear about the things goin' on. From th'way he was talkin', I don' think he'd be too happy t'hear he had a fake noble who was actually slavin' folks. Mebbe it's a chance t'get somethin' done. He at least talked a good game about wantin' t'do right by folks. If we could get Forg taken publicly like that, send a message t'the other scum... that might be worth it!
An' I bet there'll be lots of they knights around keepin' things safe. So long as Forg an' his two cronies don' know who I am..." She trails off. For all the confidence she's showing, this would be the first time she's ever gone solo for the Whispers on a job like this.
"Hmm, interesting strategy." Pella nods thoughtfully. "Even if he doesn't take a stance against slaving, I'm sure that impersonating a noble should have some sort or legal repercussions." She looks at Topaz.
Pella Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 12
"Hey. I know you're good enough to do this." She smiles. "Worst case scenario you're busted and arrested, and we'll break you out again, yeah? Just don't do anything crazy like take the High Cardinal hostage and I'm sure you'll be fine. I got a feeling those knights are the 'capture and justice' types."
Topaz smiles at Pella. "Yeah, they seemed that way from wha' I saw earlier. Th'one in charge act'lly listened when someone tol' him a guard had the wrong of things 'n' an or'n'ry vendor had the right.
So I guess I'm takin' a trip i' the mornin'. Meanwhiles, can you gi' me a rundown on wha' we know abou' Forg, just so's I have all the details straight 'n' fresh? An' then what say we fin' someplace t'cook tha' pork?"
