Our adventure begins several years ago beneath the streets of Magnimar in the year 4,707...

Keleri Deverin, an aristocrat and scholar living in Magnimar, has a problem. Just a week ago, she received an invitation from her cousin Kendra, mayor of the nearby town of Sandpoint, to attend that town’s upcoming Swallowtail Festival.

With the festival’s focus on the consecration of Sandpoint’s new cathedral, Keleri hoped to bring a family heirloom, the Star of Desna, to receive a blessing, but as she prepared for her trip, an unexpected complication arose.

When Keleri entered the old vault beneath the family estate to retrieve the star from storage, she found the chamber in total disarray. Chests lay smashed about the room, shelves were knocked over, and worst of all, the steel lockbox containing the Star of Desna was missing. The source of the robbery was made evident by a gaping hole in the center of the floor, leading down into the sewers, and sewage stains in the shape of goblin footprints leading out of it.

Enraged, Keleri lashed out at the now-empty shelves and ruined containers, only to find that she was not alone. A quiet whimpering came from behind a partially collapsed armoire. Investigating, she found a two goblins, wounded and wretched. Keleri demanded answers about her stolen heirlooms, but the conscious goblin only began howling in greater terror and begged for mercy. Keleri’s rage subsided, and she asked the goblin what had frightened her so.

The goblin introduced herself as Talga and explained that her tribe, the Mudchewer tribe, had been enslaved by a brutish hobgoblin named Drakus the Taker, who was forcing members of her tribe to dig into vaults and basements all around town to rob longshanks of loot and treasure. Those who refused were taken away, only to have their blood-drained bodies put on display as a warning to the other goblins. Immediately after the robbery on the Deverin basement, Talga and a few other desperate goblins rebelled, but they were cut down and slaughtered. Only Talga survived by retreating up to the Deverin vault and hiding.

Now with no home and nearly paralyzed with fear over the fate of her fellow goblins under Drakus’s increasingly violent rule, Talga became desperate. She begged Keleri to send adventurers to her old lair, a complex called the Ashen Ossuary that was accessible via the Magnimar sewers. She promised to sketch a map of the lair and to lead Keleri and anyone who might help to the entrance, and vowed that in return she would work to spread the word among other goblin tribes in the sewers that longshanks are friendly.

While Keleri was sympathetic to the tale, she is a scholar, not an adventurer. However, she does have contacts, and knows of at least one eager new nominee for the task. Ever the forward thinker, she hopes that by calling upon allies she can not only recover her stolen heirloom, but perhaps even start a new diplomatic alliance between Magnimar and one of its most notorious antagonists.

RETIRED

This was her chance. She knew it! Felt it in her bones!

If she did a good job, her father's Order would have to recognize her! Surely!

Neferet adjusted her attire -- she had to look perfect -- and headed out into the busy streets of Magnimar. She had been surprised to receive the invitation from Lady Deverin. But, she supposed her mother and father's presence in the city did cause quite a stir. Perhaps Lady Deverin had heard about her family through noble circles? Many members of the Esoteric Order of the Palatine Eye were of noble lineage. Yes, that must be it.

Why else call on her?

Oh, it didn't matter! This was destiny! This was her chance to do something amazing! Something worthwhile for a person of importance! Once this was done surely her father's peers would offer her a chance to join them as an initiate!

Neferet resisted the urge to squeal aloud in glee.

Looking up at the steps of Deverin Manor, she took a deep calming breath, smoothed out her clothes, and adjusted her wild hair.

I can do this!

She strides up the steps with purpose -- perhaps a little to fast paced and eager.

Neferet is a youthful half-elf of Osiriani and Ustalavic descent. She has dark skin, thick curly hair as black as pitch, and a slender build. She wears a headband with a massive golden scarab decoration on it, which borders on tacky. She has clearly tried to tame her wild locks into the style of an Osiriani wig — and failed horribly. She wears an elaborate dress in shades of white and purple, which is clearly inspired by the fashions of Ancient Osirion — though the dress was obiously made by a foppish aristocrat’s tailor who had never set foot in a desert in his life. Her dark brown eyes are rimmed with kohl, and a pair of ankh earrings dangle from her ears. Vials and beakers protrude from her belt pouches, marking her as an alchemist as easily as the faint chemical stains on the sleeves of her elaborate dress.

Note: The image I've chosen is how Neferet will look later in the campaign, after she's accepted herself and grown into her own beauty. At the moment she's younger, and is desperately trying to look like a regal noble in fashionable clothes inspired by Ancient Osirion. It's a look that suits her poorly.

As our group of eclectic heroes gather the two goblins draw a map arguing over some details. They seem to be drawing out a map of some underground lair.

You can see this linked above

Keleri turns to each of you. "Thank you once more for coming. The two goblins have some things they wanted to tell you but for now they are making a crude map of their gangs lair. The further in the more vague on details they are. Their former master, a hobgoblin and possibly a vampire by the sounds of things keeps his personal chambers towards the back and they avoid attracting his attention."

The tribal looking young man appears torn from a page in a book. Roakkad is tall, approximately 6'3", with an average build. His tan skin and dark eyes suggest Shoanti heritage, while the intricate tattoos adorning his neck and hands confirm it. His face lacks any such ornamentation, though it wears a thoughtful and discerning expression. He is completely bald. Garbed in a simple, dark green tunic, he carries a long wooden spear at his side. Around his neck you see a choker of animal teeth and, hanging lower on his chest, an enormous bone amulet adorned with bird feathers. His shoes are simple leather sandals, appropriate for the balmy coastal weather.

All of this is observed in an instant, for the eyes are swiftly drawn to the fearsome bird of prey perched on his shoulder.

"It is good of you to have me, Mistress." He bows.

He had not realized that, so soon after seeking temporary employment, he would be assigned to a job so quickly. He had half expected to clean a chimney or some other such assignment far beneath him. But, he had followed the instructions of Matlaihuitl, and has been seeking to "fit in" to this city of the tshamek with its rigid, modern architecture and modern populace.

But here, a theft! And a orcish vampire, of all things, behind it. It was good that he carries all of his earthly possessions with him, for now they must breach the darkness. "Now, this will truly be an adventure," he offers as he begins to don his hide armor. He smiles at the others, introducing himself "...and Tsharat." He motions to his bird, who caws in greeting. Or hunger.

Gorthug grunted. The half-orc crossed his arms. He was quite unhappy. First his bow broke, and then the damnable pink-skins demanded two hundred silver for a new one! Such a fortune was far beyond the mercenary. All he knew now was that he needed work. And this would have to do.

Talga the female goblin looks up. "We snuck around the Ashen Ossuary when the Mudchewers frst took the dungeon as our home. There's centipedes and beetles off the main room, thats the one where they're carving a statue of the boss. The Mudchewer goblins who remain loyal to Drakus are no friends of Talga but they are afraid of Drakus. They wont talk while he lives."

Then she looks a bit more concerned and bites her lip before continuing. [b]"Drakus is a scary hobgoblin who drinks blood and, uhm, he might just be a vampire. When a Mudchewer goblin displeases him, Drakus takes the goblin into a back room, and a few hours later the goblin is returned to the tribe dead, with a hole in the neck and all of the blood drained from the body. Drakus displays these bodies in the main sleeping quarters to keep the other goblins in line."

After a trek through the sewers you're shown the entrance to the Ashen Ossuary, the two goblins stand back to let you enter. Talga speaks up "I'll go back to Lady Longshanks now... Drakus is too scary."

Rules Question:
I can: "…during your daily preparations (described on page 332), you can create items for which you have the formulas. Creating items in this way requires spending 1 Resonance Point to create a batch of alchemical items of that type with the infused trait. You select how many items are in the batch, up to half the normal maximum batch size (half a typical batch is two items, but see the Crafting Trained Activities section on page for more information). You don’t need to attempt a Crafting check to do this, and you ignore the number of days typically required to create the items and any requirements of alchemical reagents. You can’t overspend Resonance Points to create infused items in this way during your daily preparations."

This doesn't specify ignoring the cost of crafting such items so I have to pay for them? But if I don't make a crafting check I don't have the option to increase the difficulty to lower prices or anything, which means I'm paying 'full price' to brew a half batch of these items (which works out to half price if I were to buy them separately from a shop (Two alchemist's fire would cost me 3 gp total to make, for example)? Is that accurate?

If that's accurate she can't afford to brew anything with this ability and will have to rely on her quick alchemy ability. Just verifying.

Neferet smiles proudly at Keleri. "Of course, Lady Deverin. I'm pleased to be of service!" she remarks enthusiastically.

She smiles at the fellow experts that Keleri called in, and offers them her hand. "Hello. I'm Neferet Velaketra. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Despite her strange, frivolous attire, Neferet's grip is firm, and her hands are surprisingly calloused.

As the goblins begin to speak, Neferet watches with interest.

"A vampire, you say? Interesting..."

Religion: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2 To recall knowledge about vampires.

What the heck is that?! Certainly it can't be as bad as a mummy? Hmmm... I'll have to study my tomes on undead with redoubled dedication upon my return... Such a lack of knowledge is a disgrace!

As they traipse through the sewers Neferet curls up her nose at the smell and filth. Still, she keeps her thoughts to herself.

...On that topic, at least.

Instead of complaining she prattles on about the nature of Magnimar's sewer system.
Society: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21 To recall knowledge about Magnimar's sewers and their history for flavour purposes.

"It truly was a feat of engineering!" she finishes as the group arrives at the entrance to the Ashen Ossuary.

Neferet clears her throat, straightens her clothing, and adjusts her sleeves. She draws a dart in her off hand and nods at the others. "I am prepared. Lead the way, Roakkad."

Roakkad smiles serenely as Neferet recounts the extraordinary history of the Magnimaran sewer system. He likes her spirit. "This City of Monuments is indeed a great city. But... Kaer Maga! Now she is a city like no other! She is a mother and a dreamer, and she is as old as anything in Varisia. Not even the elves remember a time without her."

Roakkad throws his arms up toward the sewer's ceiling. "Imagine the great cliff, the Storval Rise, and at its crest rest walls eight stories tall! Beyond, a fortress-city frozen in perpetual twilight! Eleven districts ensconced in hollow stone rings, themselves honeycombed with cavernous spaces holding entire wards, neighborhoods, and hovels. The roaming undead of Ankar-Te, the fabled ledge-manors of Bis, the revolutionaries of The Bottoms, the smithies of Cavalcade, the towers of Highside Stacks, the theaters of Oriat, the mystical artifacts of Tarheel Promenade, and, my home, The Warren, where true heart dwells. And in the center, the Downmarket, Hospice, and enigmatic Widdershins. And rising above all, of course, Great Sky Spire and her sky druids."

"When our work here is done, I may show you all these things. Do you like to travel?"

In his excitement, he nearly forgets they're hunting vampires.

Earlier
Large - for a dwarf - Rolo stomps forward. He has been lost in his own thoughts thus far, nodding as the lady spoke. His gear is battered but well-serviced: an embossed heavy shield, a sturdy breastplate and a warhammer, all of dwarven make.

He eventually spoke up himself, in a gravelly voice;

"Ma'am, I would aid as best I can. There is darkness out there, and I would know it - and shield others from it."

Now

He has thought about these oddities.

"A vampire hobgoblin? Perhaps, but perhaps this Drakus simply plays up a horrorshow for fear's sake. Either way, we shall bring him low."

He looks about.

"I would take position at the front, shield first."

Looking about the area Rolo sees nothing further of interest and definitely nothing to do with the dominion of the black. Roakkad senses no magic. Neferet can tell that the area is old, though not by the standards of Magnimar but certainly the architecture dates back a few centuries.

Rolo charges into the thick of the goblins with no hesitation, and a goblin quickly collapses to the ground like a harpsicord.

Neferet circles around the fight until she has a clear shot against the goblins and tosses her dart at the yellow goblin.

Then she keeps moving, deeper into the Ossuary towards the goblins with the bows.

Cut us up for dinner? Gorthug chuckled as he strode up. He brought his blade down with a smirk, ready for that satisfying sound of bones breaking and flesh tearing. The sound that made it good to be alive... the goblin receiving his wrath was now a pile o gore.

Roakkad takes a careful step back before striking out with his spear, but the goblin ducks out of the way. He whistles out to Tsharat. Tsharat flies north around a pillar and bites one of the goblins laying it low.
All the guys near you were dead so I moved him into a new position against the other goblins

The last goblin starts screaming for help while drawing it's sword before it attacks Tsharat managing to hit it with a few slashes.

RETIRED

Neferet wanders the room, prying her darts out of the goblin corpses. Then she cleans them off and re-sheathes them.

I don't need any of the treasure.

Then she wanders the room for anything of interest. Starting near where we entered, and working her way through to the far end.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

Neferet takes a fingertip and wipes it on the sooty walls, then examines it. She had heard that goblins liked fire, but this seemed excessive...

Not sure what she has to roll, but she's curious what kind of fire this was. As old as the tomb or recent? And 'natural' fire or alchemical? Nature, I suppose?
Nature: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
She shrugs, having no idea.

Rolo picks up a Shortbow.

"Does anyone else need arrows before we move on?"

Neferet is unsure, perhaps just soot?

1 person marked this as a favorite.
RETIRED

Yup. They probably just painted it on there. In fact, it's their favourite art medium. Soot is SO hot right now. Neferet's got it all figured out.

”Weak bows. Would break. Keep them.” He looked at the shortbows with obvious distaste, as if the very existence of the weapons was offensive to him.

RETIRED

Neferet approaches the first side cavern. "Let's go in here first. I don't like the thought of leaving mysterious side rooms unexplored behind us."

Perception on A3: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Whoo! She is on the ball.

A3
This roughly carved chamber looks to have once been much larger, but now the entire southern half is choked with rubble and debris. As Neferet pokes her head in all seems well until the rocks start moving and reveal themselves to be giant centipedes!

Neferet draws an alchemist's fire and throws it at the orange centipede.

It also deals 1 persistent fire damage and 1 fire splash damage.

Then she takes a few steps back.
