Surveen Walsh |
Sharadon, not sure where you get the extra +2 on the damage. It's kinda important as its the difference between life and death. Also noticed you have 2 magic traits, normally you can only choose 1 trait from a category, (magic,faith,social,combat..etc.)
Tudan Davken |
Perhaps you missed this... ;)
Surveen, you had enough warning to mostly evade Sharadon's flames, and will take at most half damage, with a Ref save to take no damage at all.
ETA: Incidentally, I just noticed that Sharadon has a lesser metamagic selective rod listed in his gear.
ETA x2: Oh, and the +2 comes from his being an admixturist. The evocation school's Intense Spells power is not replaced by that focused school.
Surveen Walsh |
Thx Tudan, forgot the 1/2 damage, was pretty shocked when it turned out with 9d6, then getting a high count for the rolls ... I was quite happy thinking it being only 7.
Surveen manages to avoid the centre of the intense fire, but even as he dives clear, the red and orange flame engulf him, burning his blue skin, leaving him severely injured.
GM Will Cooper |
My reading of the Magical Knack trait suggests to me that Sharadon's fireball should do 7d6+2 damage, not 9d6+2. The trait does not increase your overall caster level above your character level. So, dropping the last two dice, the swarm takes 29 damage, and Surveen takes 14 damage. Let me know if that's wrong.
More bees crisp and die in Sharadon's supernatural flames. The few remaining insects start to circle aimlessly, no longer a single guided mass of stinging rage, but now tiny harmless individuals.
You hear, suddenly, a high pitched unearthly voice echoing all around you. The rage filled voice says, "My beautiful bees! You have killed them all. Curse you meddlers, you should never have gotten involved. Well know that this petty village is doomed. For too long have they shunned my pallid condition and laughed at my losses! When Queen Rhoswen comes, all will perish, choking on mist, pierced by thorns, slain by the might of the Fellnight fey. I, Tenzekil, will have my revenge!"
The owner of the voice seems to be upset.
Tudan Davken |
The two bonus dice come from his Spell Specialization feat. Magical Knack just keeps it from being lowered by his two non-wizard levels. Hopefully next time he will remember to use his rod. ;)
Tudan splits his attention, attending to his stung and burned friend, while giving the disembodied voice half of his mind. The concerned oracle crouches over the charred undine, touching him with a mystical chant, burns and stings magically fading away under his ministrations. Cure serious wounds: 3d8 + 6 ⇒ (2, 4, 2) + 6 = 14
Muttering under his breath, Tudan commits the words to memory while preparing another casting. "Doomed village, Queen Rhoswen, mist and thorns, Fellnight fey, Tenzekil's revenge. Right." He touches the brave blue monk again, erasing his injuries and restoring him to health. Cure serious wounds: 3d8 + 6 ⇒ (5, 4, 8) + 6 = 23
Surveen Walsh |
Surveen, lets Tudan's magic wash over him, soothing the pain and mending his burnt flesh, it returns to its normal blue hue. Even as he nods thanks to his fiend, he listens with dismay at the voice an anger steadily rising within. "This Tenzekil must pay reparation for the fear and disruption he has bought to Eylin's wedding celebrations. Let's find our host and his bride, we should see if anything can be salvaged of this day?"
Tudan Davken |
Tudan grasps Surveen at the elbow with both hands, and hauls up the newly-hale man. "They say that the best revenge is to live well, but I'm not sure how much people will feel like celebrating after such a fright." He embraces the undine monk and pounds him on the back. "Well done by the way. Crazy, but effective." Tudan gently punches his bro on the shoulder and winks to show that he's teasing.
GM Will Cooper |
As Tudan tends to Surveen, you hear a low thrumm and a wash of greenish light rolls across the ground at ankle height. A deep woody scent fills the air, like the smell of an ancient forest before a thunderstorm. Around you, growing with frightening speed, thorned bushes claw their way free of the ground. Green tendrils writhe and twist together as they swiftly grow into a solid hedge encircling you.
You have scant moments to react...
Surveen Walsh |
"Crazy or no, Eylin's guests didn't look as though they could handle the chaos of the bee swarms. Someone had to rise to the challenge." he smiles at Tudan, before he spots the mists and the flora.
"Come Tudan, there is evil afoot here, run!" taking Tudan's hand, Surveen attempts to run away from the encircling hedge and mists, hopefully towards their friends.
Sharadon Vos |
For a moment, I thought I had some 'splainin' ta do. Then Tudan stepped in and saved the day! Thank ye mate! And the rod, I forgots about me rod!!
Still jittery from having been assaulted on such a joyous occasion, the poor mage had forgotten all about his rod that sat expectantly in his pack. "This calls for an apology", the poor mage mused to himself. But before he had even a scant moment to respond, green tendrals of vegetation were upon them! He could only watch at it created it's circle. "Uhm... fellows?"
GM Will Cooper |
Right, submission to Open Design finished and just about ready to send. Where were we?
The wall of thorns grows magically fast, and within heartbeats is taller than head height. It neatly encapsulates the four of you, in a rough square of about 30 foot to a side. It surrounds the entire area where the benches were set up, and cuts you off from the fled wedding guests.
For a heartbeat nothing more happens and the only sound is the rustling of thorn-laden branches moving in the slight breeze. The day seems suddenly gloomier.
Are you clear on the situation? You've got 6 or 12 seconds grace to get organized and into whatever position you like before... whatever is next.
Gideon Hawke |
"You know how you sometimes think you were victorious and you're wondering which two of the village girls that you just saved will crawl up to a hayloft with you and then something way worse happens and you wonder if you'll ever get to a hayloft with two village girls again? I have that feeling right now."
Tudan Davken |
Now that I'm home and have reviewed the rules... I'd rather not spend another standard action to complete my spell. So, I'll re-retcon.
Alarmed, Tudan begins to run hand-in-hand with Surveen back toward their comrades -- only to find them all enclosed in the same high, thorny hedge. Gideon attacks the gloominess with dark humor, and Tudan can only agree. "Ditto. Back to back? And I'll bring in Pluck, so that he can fill the formation if Sharadon levitates." The experienced oracle begins summoning his brave water elemental friend.
GM Will Cooper |
Three large humanoid figures step soundlessly through the thorns to the north. They take no obvious harm from the twisted brambles. Flecks of saliva drip from the corners of their mouths, and their large pointed ears twitch at every sound. Their bodies are covered with bark-like skin and wrapped in tangled, thorny vines. Yellow eyes peer out from beneath prickly brows as the newcomers inspect you with a faint sneer.
The three of them are Large humanoids, arrayed in a straight line across the top of the hedge-bound arena.
Creature initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Gideon: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Sharadon: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Surveen: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Tudan: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Tudan Davken |
Although busy casting his spell, Tudan has enough attention to spare to consider what manner of creature these are. Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Unfortunately, he has no idea. Never even heard of the like in a bard's tale.
Tudan Davken |
Since we had 6-12 seconds, and Tudan started casting his spell almost right away, could he have finished casting his spell before we went into initiative?
As the big and scary-looking humanoids step through the hedge, Tudan finishes summoning Pluck, placing the little water elemental next to Sharadon.
Sharadon Vos |
The pale mage nods apprehensively, glaring at the opponents, all lined in a row. "S..sha..should I use it? The last one nearly..." he muttered to Gideon, as he glanced down at the rod he'd neglected to use before. Wincing as the elemental appeared beside him, Sharadon took a moment to ready himself, before nodding his inclination to use the spell desired. "Hope this one works as intended..."
Clutching the hilt of his blade, Sharadon began a familiar chant of power, summoning up the strongest of his evocation magics. At the height of the chant, Sharadon hurls his hands outward, slinging a ball of roaring fire at the creatures.
Attempt to cast a fireball at the creatures, taking my move action to draw and use a charge of my selective rod if anyone is in the way (this time!)
Fireball DC 18, 9d6 + 2 ⇒ (3, 1, 6, 6, 2, 3, 2, 5, 6) + 2 = 36
Tudan Davken |
Hey, it isn't just you. I just now noticed that water elementals get -4 to attack and damage rolls on land. Since we made these characters from scratch, we're like first-level characters with seventh-level abilities: we don't really know what we're doing just yet.
GM Will Cooper |
And back!
From the primal flare of invisible arcane energy through the newcomers' bodies, Gideon decides that the creatures are related to the First World. They are some sort of Fey.
Each of the three large creatures pulls a single large thorn from its own body - leaving plenty more on their bramble-skinned forms - and hurls it a different member of the group. The thorns glisten with a greenish fluid.
Attack on Tudan: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2, plus DC 13 Fort save if hit.
Attack on Gideon: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3, plus DC 13 Fort save if hit.
Attack on Surveen: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4, plus DC 13 Fort save if hit.
Surveen Walsh |
Surveen staggers back from the forcefully thrown thorn which pierces his shoulder. He rips the thorn from his flesh, but a green residue begins to eat at his raw flesh, there is something more his body is failing to fight, more than just a wound.
Fort Save 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 if poison he is still under the effects of a vial of anti-toxin, so has a bonus of +5, immune to disease.
GM Will Cooper |
@Surveen - it is a poison effect, so with the anti-toxin you are fine :)
Bah, looks like I've screwed up the initiative order already! OK, to get back on track I need an action from Gideon. Then I'll resolve Sharadon's spell, then it will be Tudan and Surveen's action. But feel free to all post at once, and I'll sort things out.
Tudan Davken |
It's been awhile, so I hope that no one will mind if I run down everyone's pre-init prep. Not trying to GM, just trying to keep everything straight in my own head. It took some interpreting, so please correct me if I'm wrong.
Gideon: Casts shield.
Sharadon: Draws his lesser metamagic selective rod.
Surveen: Draws his +1 nunchaku.
Tudan: Casts summon monster II (Pluck).
There are also some effects in play. Again, I'm not entirely certain.
Gideon: Shield for seven minutes from round 0 of the thorn quarrel.
Sharadon: Mage armor for six hours from round 1 of the bee battle.
Surveen: Antitoxin for one hour from round 0 of the bee battle.
Tudan: Flush with success from catching a white paper fish. Indefinitely. You hear that, bees and thorn beasts? You can't harsh my happy! I won't let you!! :p
Then there are the resources expended, including both the fight against the bees and the prep for this one.
Gideon: Cast one level 3 spell (lightning bolt) and one level 1 spell (shield).
Sharadon: Cast one level 3 spell (fireball) and one level 1 spell (mage armor).
Surveen: Used one vial of antitoxin.
Tudan: Used one channel energy. Cast two level 3 spells (both cure serious wounds), one level 2 spell (summon monster II), and one level 1 spell (bless back in the food tent). Uhh... looks like I should be more conservative with my resources.
Okay. That should be everything up to (but not including) round 1.
Round 1, Init 13
Tudan scowls as a thorn pings off of his mithral breastplate, leaving a green smear on its silvery perfection. Mindful of the likelihood of Surveen ending up face-to-face with the bramble beasts, Tudan calls upon the powers of life to protect the brave monk. Shield of faith (+3 deflection bonus to AC) for six minutes. Then, the well-prepared woodsman draws his cold iron longsword. Due to the slowness of PbP, I'm just going to assume for convenience that Gideon would share with us that they're fey. Not like it takes a genius. ;)
Gideon Hawke |
My first round action was to cast shield. I don't think we're at round 2 already are we? Edit: I'm at the top of the initiative anyway, so I ought to post Round 2. Doing it now.
"I hope these Fey like it cold!" Gideon charges his scimitar with magical energy. It steams in the warm air as he moves to one of the creatures.
Arcane Pool point to power up my weapon with additional +2 enhancement as a swift action. Spell Strike with Frigid Touch. Kind of hard to see but frigid touch is linked for convenience.
Spellstrike: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 331d6 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 144d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 3, 5) = 17
Crit Confirmation: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 211d6 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 124d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 4, 5) = 18
Edit: Paizo is formating these dice rolls weird. The attack is a 33 for 14 damage and 17 from Frigid Touch. The confirmation is 21 for 12 damage and 18 more from Frigid Touch.
Edit 2: Just realized that they're large and I probably need an acrobatics roll to avoid an AoO
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (18) + 15 = 33
GM Will Cooper |
Thanks Tudan, that's a great rundown of what's going on. That's the kind of thing that really helps in PBPs, especially when the GM is a bit less than metronomic!
The two remaining creatures stare in shock for a brief moment, before Sharadon's incantation engulfs them in flame. Ref saves: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24, 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9, 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9. One thorn-beast successfully shields itself from the worst of the fire, while the other two shriek in pain as their woody bodies scorch and warp in the fierce magical heat. They die hard, rent asunder by superheated sap escaping in sticky evil-smelling gouts of fluid.
Gideon tumbles forward, narrowly evading the grasp of the last thorn giant. He comes to his feet, blade flaring with arctic power as it carves ruin through the plant-like hide of his target. Frost patterns crackle over the creature's still smoking thorns and film its eyes as jagged crystals of frozen sap jut from its chest and limbs. It collapses in death.
Hey Surveen, technically you should've got an action in before Gideon finished the last creature - but Gideon's attack was good enough that I wanted to run with it...
Behind you, two more of the creatures step through the seemingly impenetrable wall of thorns. Surveen, you get an action while they assess the situation.
Tudan Davken |
You're welcome! FWIW, events have been moving so quickly that Tudan hasn't readied his shield yet. No effect on the past; just worth noting.
Also, is Pluck's Int 4 either smart or simple enough to interpret Tudan's command as basically an Aid Another action? Because with his penalties to attack and damage on dry land, he's otherwise just a roadblock. Which I should've known.
Surveen Walsh |
Surveen nimbly jumps the fallen thorn creates as his nanchaku is raised and sweeps in an arch, thrashing towards the monster, before in a whirlwind of speed, turning and defly move back to his original position.
If close enough for a spring attack, Surveen will use that
Nanchaku(+1) 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
GM Will Cooper |
Surveen moves smoothly towards his chosen target, ignoring the burned and frozen corpses of the fallen. His nunchuk strikes solidly, and he dances back out of reach before the bramble beast can retaliate.
Spriggan 4: -7
Spriggan 5: 0
In seeming reply, each creature detaches a long thorny tendril of bramble from its own body. Whiplike, they snap the tendrils towards ... Gideon and Sharadon. With their long gangly limbs and the cruelly barbed whips they only need to take a single step forward to lash at their targets.
Trip attempt on Gideon: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7.
Trip attempt on Sharadon: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18.
Party actions!
Tudan Davken |
Success/failure of the trip attempts?
Previously...
Tudan raises his eyebrows at the impressive reach of the bramble beasts' viny whips. "Sharadon, let me bless you before you go anywhere." Suggesting that if you're about to soar out of reach, then delay to right after him.
Round 2?, Init 13?
Tudan repeats the words and gestures of the spell that he just cast on Surveen, drawing another parchment from his spell component pouch and touching Sharadon this time. Shield of faith (+3 deflection bonus to AC and CMD) for six minutes. "Now if they'd rather stand back, then I'd rather they didn't." He adds in Aquan, "Pluck, come with me."
The fierce oracle boldly marches forward and to one side, strapping on his well-crafted steel shield as he goes, until he is just a few yards away from the monster that Surveen hit. The little water elemental follows along slowly, clearly out of his element. Action assumes that their natural whips don't threaten. Intending to get close enough to 5' step into melee range next turn, without provoking any AoOs this turn or next.
Tudan: AC 21, CMD 18, hp 47/47, channel 4/5, energy body 6/6, rage 5/5, no spell or status effects.
Spells: 1st 4/7, 2nd 4/6, 3rd 2/4.
Pluck: AC 17, CMD 13, hp 13/13, water mastery -4.
Sharadon Vos |
The poor mage slams hard onto the ground, groaning at the physical discomfort. Quickly sprawling backward, the mage tries his best to flee the creatures wrath.
"Little ha..elp!
Huzah! I have been tripped. I am now attempting to crawl backward, while taking a full defensive. If I can't move, I'll full defensive on the ground.
Tudan Davken |
@ Sharadon: Since we're still getting used to our character's abilities, here's an idea, if you're interested.
Gideon Hawke |
Cast defensively: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (3) + 14 = 17 Just enough to cast Chill Touch!
Gideon once again charges his sword with magical energies, this time necromantic, and hacks at the nearest vine creature.
Piranha Strike Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 111d6 + 1d6 + 10 ⇒ (1) + (1) + 10 = 12
Miss! 7 remaining uses of Chill Touch this casting.
GM Will Cooper |
Gideon and Surveen both miss their targets, and the giant bramble creatures take their chance to counter attack. They swing their long gangling limbs and grab with viciously barbed thorns.
Creature 1 attacks Gideon;
Slam attack 1 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7.
Slam attack 2 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6.
Gore attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14, damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8.
Creature 1 attacks Surveen;
Slam attack 1 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5.
Slam attack 2 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5.
Gore attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8, damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9.
Their attacks are ineffective.
Tudan Davken |
Round 3, Init 13
Tudan extends his left arm to point just a few yards over, toward one side of the big bramble beast. "Pluck, over there. And hinder it." The nature-loving aasimar carefully shifts in the opposite direction, while nurturing his anger. Children and women stung. Innocents injured. All for pride. I will not have this! With a roar, the formerly-placid plane-touched oracle swings his anti-fey weapon in a deadly arc.
NA: 5'-step up to close range.
FA: Rage (+4 Str, +4 Con, -2 AC).
SA: Raging attack w/cold iron longsword: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 7 + 2 = 22
...for 1d8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 2 = 6 damage.
(Not even including the flanking bonus of +2 to hit, if Pluck is able to give one.)
Pluck's action: Aid Another 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 5 - 4 = 7 vs. DC 10 -- Fail
Tudan: AC 19, CMD 16, hp 61/61, channel 4/5, energy body 6/6, rage 4/5, raging.
Spells: 1st 4/7, 2nd 4/6, 3rd 2/4.
Pluck: AC 17, CMD 13, hp 13/13, water mastery -4.
Surveen Walsh |
Surveen uses his monk's weapon to inflict more damage.
Flurry of blows 1: monk weapon Magic Nanchaku(+1) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 damage 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (3, 3) + 2 = 8
Flurry of blows 2: monk weapon Magic Nanchaku(+1) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 damage 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (3, 5) + 2 = 10
Flurry of blows 0: monk weapon Magic Nanchaku(+1) 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20 damage 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 1) + 2 = 9
Tudan Davken |
Sharadon's post here on the 29th was his most recent under any alias, and he hasn't replied to my PM from the 11th. I can't speak for him, but I can quote him (from the playtest discussion)...
As for tactics, I'm simple. I float up above, and rain firey death below. Pretty simple stuff really.
So, activating his boots of levitation and floating up 20' seems like something he would do -- especially after being tripped, and losing a round to crawling away and standing up. It's also something that wouldn't have expended any of his resources, for when he comes back (I'm an optimist).
