Lucius, holding the coin, points straight ahead towards the dragon, and draw Dies Irae with his other hand. He lets Zagathoth and Johann lead.
Onwards, to the Dragon! Better the
devildragon you know.
Wise leadership, methinks, Cardinal... Time and the dice will tell...
| The Ogon Fox |
To Lucius' question before we started moving:
"Yes, most of my spells require utterances to cast--but I expect I will be more preoccupied with striking the dragon directly than with casting any of the spells I have prepared today."
If the situation calls for grease and/or burning hands, I'll need to get out of the silence to cast them.
"Zagathoth: as usual, to be most effective I will need to strike the dragon while it is distracted. If you and I can maintain positions on opposite sides of it, that should work well."
"I don't think my usual electrical attacks will be of any use here," the Fox says as he draws his nonmagical cold iron dagger. "And I can't remember the last time I bit someone, but I may need to today..." He grins at everyone, baring his teeth.
Also, if we're ready, I'll cast blur on Zagathoth and on Johann. The spell lasts 5 minutes. And I'm expecting Quinlan will cast haste on us all? My full attack routine will be dagger +8 / dagger +8 / bite +3. Damage on all of those is 1d4 (no Strength bonus to add), +2d6 if it's a sneak attack.
| Zagathoth |
before the Cardinal retrieves his coin...
"But... won't the dragon be flying?" Zagathoth asks as tactics are considered, "In the stories I heared they always flyed... there is not much I can do to it if it just flies around breathing fire on us... Can anyone make me fly?"
if we have 1 fly spell available, it should honestly go to Johann... he might be able to grapple it well enough to prevent flight (or I could ride him into combat), if there's 2 I'd gladly take the second one
Cardinal Lucius d'Borja
|
"I hope that there will not be much room for flying." Lucius replies quietly. "We will have to move quickly and strike it down before it can fly away. If we surround the creature on all sides then it will not be able to escape our wrath."
| Ceruleax, young blue dragon |
When the party is ready to enter the dragon’s lair...
The ten-foot-wide-by-ten-foot-high corridor opens into a spacious chamber, some fifty-feet-square-by-fifty-feet-high, with ten-foot-wide-by-five-foot-high tiers rising from north to south, the south most tier being twenty feet higher than the floor at the north end of the chamber. (Four tiers, the first 5-ft-high, second 10-ft-high, third 15-ft-high, and fourth at the south end of the chamber 20-ft-high.)
The floor and the tiers here are plated with verdigris-tinted copper.
Atop the highest tier at the back southeast corner, coiled like a horse-sized winged serpent atop a heap of coins, gems, jewels, and other treasure, is a dragon with azure scales that lighten to a copper hue at the underbelly, and ivory horns on its cat-like head! It snaps its head in the party’s direction, blue electric sparks crackling in its fanged maw and flaring nostrils!
In English: Aha!! The Crusaders of the Catacombs, as I live and breathe! Hohohoho!! I’ve been instructed to greet you with a proper welcome...
The dragon rises onto its four clawed, blue, catlike legs, and opening its jaws wide in the party’s direction, inhales a mighty breath...

If there's no fly spell I'm not sure that me riding Johann is advantageous? It keeps us in the same square (limiting flanking and making it easier to catch us both in one breath attack) and doesn't grant much... I don't even have a lance for a huge first attack. I suppose it would put me closer to the ceiling (making it easier to reach the dragon)? Is that worth it? Should we wait for Quinlan to chime in and see if he has a fly spell?
Zagathoth looks at the height of the chamber a frowns.

January 18th, 7:30 PM, in the Church of Saint Peter...
Pope Eugenius paces up and down the central aisle of the nave, from sanctuary to narthex and back again, the wheels in his troubled mind turning...
Will our preparations be enough? Should I evacuate the city entirely?... Did Duke of Florence know his architect is a servant of the Devil!?... Perhaps Cardinal Lucius’ skills as inquisitor are being wasted down in the Catacombs... Should I send him to investigate D’Medici instead?... But the work down below is so crucial...

Lucius can ascend the giant copper steps with a double move, drawing his holy sword as part of one of his move actions since he has a BAB of at least +1...
As the inquisitor cardinal comes almost within a swing of Dies Irae from the dragon, it focuses its reptilian-feline eyes upon the pearlescent-glowing blade, and silently mouths an exclamation that goes unheard within Lucius’ magical zone of silence...

Well 147 damage (plus if Johann hit more) is going to paste most things...
Lucius begins appraising the horde with a careful eye. The various treasures are largely dismissed, but the magic weapons and (especially) the potions catch his eye and he gathers them swiftly, before making his assessment.
Do I need to roll or shall we assume that Quin, Lucius, Fox and Boga between us make it? :)
"These potions are very interesting." He says thoughtfully. "These potions seem to have very long lasting, perhaps permanent effects. We should consider them carefully."

Besides tasting shockingly delicious, the blue dragon’s heart imparts the permanent ability to speak with animals to Zagathoth!
hahaha- that’s perfect! It’s a detail I don’t think anyone’s really noticed yet but I decided early on that Zag has “the gift of tongues” (one of the spiritual gifts listed by St Paul) and he’s been picking up a new language every time we level (he speaks like 8 now), so being able to speak with animals dovetails nicely with that.
