Spotting the cultist again, Euron can see no way to get to him with the wave of zombies closing in on them. So he moves up and trys to thin the horde. This is going to get out of hand very fast...

attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
attack: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 6 = 13

Lilith's bolt of positive energy draws the usual attention from the groaners and they keep moving forward, though they reach your front line this round their efforts to move across the swampy ground mean they have no time to attack yet...

Lenneth reaches the bottom of the tree with Edric in it, he looks down at you with panic in his eyes.

Care to try a Diplomacy check or something else?

Azmerai's attack simply crushes one of the groaners, the mangled corpse does not move again.

Live you can't charge as the ground is 'difficult' due to stone call

Whilst Lives moves quickly to attack, the multiple enemies make it difficult to land a blow and his knife does not find a target this time.

Euron's strike barely connects, but in this case barely is enough, rendering the undead inanimate.

A crackling missile of darkness flashes out of the forest (those that have detected the cultist see it emenate from that position), slamming in to Euron doing 14 points of damage and causing him to be sickened for 2 rounds. A successful Will save vs DC 15 will halve the damage and negate the sickened condition

Ben, Jandra and Asha appear to be making a successful retreat towards the south east corner of the map. Thanks to your actions at least they seem to be safe.

Tried re-making the map in Ditzie but got the same error so evidently it doesn;t like something I've done :( Re-did for upload to Flickr though so we DO have an updated map :)

Sorry guys, busy couple of days

1d20 ⇒ 2

All of a sudden the entire world is plugged get into darkness for Flynn. He can still hear the sound of battle below, feel the bird between his knees and smell her dry dusty feathers so he knew he wasn't dead.

Fighting the rising panic he realises he has been struck blind and wheels his mount away, trusting she will not fly him into danger.

He shouts down:

The cultists got me, I can't see Anything! This fight is over forme, I'm sorry.

Going to just hover over the battlefield until the fight is done one way or the other

Lilith sees the crackling missile of darkness flashes out of the forest and tries to identify the spell. She likely also heard the casting with her sharp hearing.

Spellcraft: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19

She then blasts the injured undead with positive energy, moving as needed to get within range. Seems like the scale on the map is now expanded - more distance between the groaners and the tent… Not a big difference as long as Lilith can get into range.

Lilith identifies the spell as Dread Bolt. Just to note apologies Euron, you aren't an outsider so didn't need the save to avoid being stunned, sorry >.<

Just to confirm, Lilith's spell did damage the zombie group as they all look pretty battered

Lenneth fights a feeling of dismay as Flynn calls down that he's no longer able to see. She realizes that there's nothing she can do to help him at this moment and there's still the matter of the terrified Edric to deal with.

"You need to come down now Edric, while you have a chance! On the ground you can run, but the trees are a dead end should the rest of us fall! Hurry, we will do our best to cover you, Ben and the rest - please!"

Diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 1

As she pleads with the boy to make a break for it along with the others, her eyes rapidly shift from him to the ongoing battle, watching for further danger.

Oh son of a...nope, pretty sure Edric likes his tree perch juuuust fine right now. I'm also guessing that trying to cajole him down is taking most of her concentration for this round.

Thanks for the reminder Flynn :)

Euron's blow destroys one groaner, and Lilith's spell another.

Edric looks at Lenneth, then across at the zombies and back to Lenneth, before shaking h=is head and hugging the tree in fear.

Azmerai does a tactical retreat whilst Lives' swinging fists knock one zombie down and another's head clean off.

The groaners surge forward, clawing and bitin, one manages to get past Euron's guard doing 4 damage and another closing on Lives smashes its arm against the Shoanti's shoulder doing 5 damage

Mist starts to appear from where the cultist was last seen.

Shooting a regretful look at Edric, she retreats back, away from the groaners. Glancing upwards, she can see Flynn and Skyfall hovering nearby, likely attempting to follow the sound of her voice.

Can you fly if I try and direct you?

"Watch the mist!" she calls out in warning. "Don't get caught in it!"

Lenneth retreats back towards the tent. If everyone moves far enough away, she can reapply Swamp's Grasp to slow the remaining groaners down again. Otherwise she doesn't really have much in the way of offensive capability at this point, sadly...

Lilith's bolt goes wide of the mark, but manages to cover the rest of the party as it retreats to the edge of the woods. The zombies are slowed up by the efforts of Lenneth as her magic causes the ground itself to hamper the undead.

Seeing you moving away, Edric finally hops down to the ground, running past you towards Ben, Asha and Jandra with fear in his eyes.

The mist stays where it is under the forest canopy, blocking your view beyond it.

Flynn can't help let the hopelessness of his situation take hold, if only for a moment. What use is he know, in this world?

Flynn, you're able to keep pace with the party thanks to your bond with Skyfall and Lenneth's bracelet

You successfully manage to elude the last of the undead following you.

As you head back towards Solace, Euron leading the way and sure you're on the quickest path, Ben and Jandra call out

I know you'll want to get back, but we'll not be following, not with them still there...

blurts Ben, frowning. Jandra puts a hand on his shoulder and asks in a softer voice

Is there another safe haven near? We've heard of a walled off village to the north and some fortified caves at the edge of the mountains to the south-west, have you heard of anywhere else?

Asha looks jumpy, clutching for a weapon that's evidently no longer there. Edric still looks pale, holding his bow like a club, and from the look of it it's been used as one before.

Do we have to go back to Solace just now? We just met these fine folks and I would see them to safety of I can. I am sure we still have a lot to talk about too. And part of that is what they know about Solace that makes them distrust it so. Lilith looks to her companions. Besides we have not found who we came looking for and I do not think any there can restore Flyn's sight.

Once it seems as certain as possible that the remaining groaners and their cultist herder have been eluded for the time being, Lenneth stops and gazes in the direction of the sun, trying to gauge the time of time. "Actually, this is the first mention I think I've heard of any other supposed safe havens, so it sounds as if you know more than we do," she says with a regretful shake of her head. "Lilith has a point too...we still haven't discovered what happened to Violet. And I'd also like to be able to sit down and have a chat."

Lenneth furrows her brow in thought and chews on her lip, clearly thinking hard. "Okay, maybe tell us what you've heard about these other safe places? If nothing else, we'll have an idea of a direction to head in should we need somewhere else to retreat to that isn't Solace."

With his sight gone, Flynn isn't able to think clearly. Every slight movement of Skyfall's body makes him grab on tighter for dear life. When he could see he could anticipate every deviation in her course, adjust it as necessary and fly with wild abandon.

Now he felt useless, and terrified. He didn't want the others to know but with his link to Lenneth, he was pretty sure she already did.

Despite the devastation he had seen from his aerial vantage point, never had he felt so alone.

Euron estimates that given the time of day, as long as you don't spend more than a few minutes chatting before leaving, the walk back to Solace would take until dusk, so you'd arrive just before the light goes

Jandra looks a little downcast that you've not heard of any other places

We don't know much more than that I'm afraid. One of our number came from a walled village to the north, he was foraging with a group and they got overwhelmed by groaners, he fled and ended up with us. No idea where the village is though aside from north of the western road

survival or knowledge (local) DC 16:
She might be referring to a small village called Myort Shore, who's main claim to fame was as the venue for an annual fishing competition due to its position next to a lake. You don;t recall it as particularly impressive or defensible.

Asha continues where Jandra has trailed off

I'd heard from another survivor I was with that to the south-west, as the mountains finish and the area turns to steppes then desert, that there were people living in the cliffside, in caves with ladders between them.

Ben scoffs

A fanciful tale, some bard's idea of a safe haven where those that've turned can't reach you as you sleep

he frowns. Edric speaks up in a quavering voice

I..I like the sound of it...

the gnome shakes his head slowly and wanders off a ways to crouch down and rest his arms and legs, laying his pickaxe next to him on the ground.

Jandra looks to Flynn and nods to herself, placing her satchel on the ground and rummaging through it revealing half a dozen small potion bottles and some scrolls. She pulls one free and squints at it, turning it upside down, before hesitating slightly and then thrusting the parchment in to Lenneth's hands.

Found this and was saving it, but we owe you for happening along when you did, before than last group fell upon us

Spellcraft DC 18:
It's a scroll of dispel magic

Asha chimes in

We've not seen anyone else in a week, so Violet didn't make it down as far as us I'm afraid

she sighs

Look, I appreciate everything you've done for us, but I'm not alone here when I say I think you're misguided.

Jandra nods, Edric just looks even more uncomfortable if that were possible.

We thought everything you probably do, that is was a miracle to find such a safe haven amid all the desolation, but Solace is rotten at the core, literally! she's almost spitting with anger

Jandra takes over, talking in a calmer voice than Asha as she ties her satchel back up.

That place keeps you safe, but at a cost... we didn't find out till we'd been there a while. It's difficult to put your finger on, Ben and I only really realised when we were away scavenging and not so 'under the thumb' and influence of that place.

she looks you each in the eyes and continues

I was on watch several times in the early days, and saw the power of Solace, hordes of groaners would file across the plains, a sea of undead ready to wash over anything in its path, and yet they would ignore the keep despite it's obvious size. One night whatever it was protecting the place stopped working, I felt a change in the place, like a shift in the magical energies then that was it, the groaners were surging towards us and tearing people apart. Then I felt a surge and everything went black. When we woke up, the zombies had been destroyed, the council said Violet had done it. I didn't believe them, and Violet refused to talk about it.

Ben has walked back over and picks up the tale

So we went hunting for answers, and found them. That hill the keep's built on is hollow, there's something underneath, a secret hall or somesuch with arcane writings up and down the pillars and floors. Jandra said the whole thing bubbles with energy. Then we found him. One of the bandits that had attacked us recently. Radosek told us he'd been taken to the woods and released, but there he was, tied to some strange pillar with the life sucked right out of him. his eyes glaze over at the memory.

Jandra speaks

He was alive, breathing, but completely unresponsive. We freed him but he just collapsed to the floor and led there. Then we heard others coming so fled before we were discovered. We volunteered for scavenging duty and fled as soon as we could.

Ben nods

We came down here to the place Solace told us was their enemy, and yet we found a peaceful community who was simply trying to defend itself. We've tried to keep ourselves away from the keep and its dark heart, but even now the evil creeping across the land touches us.

he frowns. Jandra finishes their explanation

So there you have it, we won't go back there. We can't offer you much for saving us, but at least you're forewarned about where you're going back to. We found the entrance underground in one of the storerooms at the back if you want to look yourselves

They stand ready to move on.

We'll likely try for these cliffside caves to the south, if for no other reason than to find somewhere a little warmer for the winter

Jandra says over Ben's scoffing.

There's not much time if you want to get back before dusk, but I'll try and answer any questions you have

She looks expectantly at you.

Damp and cramped, but it did the job in a pinch," Lenneth chuckles at mention of the supposed cave-dwellers. With a start, she realized that it had only been...what? Maybe a few weeks since then? Yet it felt like a lifetime ago.

Lenneth's jaw drops as the scroll is placed into her hands, for she immediately understands the nature of the magic written on it. "Thank you," she whispers. "You've not only given Flynn hope once more but may very well have saved our lives...I have a sad feeling that we will need use of this magic again in the future."

As the small group tells their tale of the dark things to be found underneath the old keep, Lenneth looks more and more shocked. "So...the Council...is using people like some sort of unholy power source to keep the groaners away?" she finally says, finding her voice once more. "That's quite a story...though it would explain the man we found chained up at the dumping grounds!" she exclaims, her eyes widening.

"It still doesn't make sense though...this morning we found evidence of deliberate contamination of the food supplies and there's evidence that Nikolai is being slowly poisoned. What in the hells does it all mean!? Can both the Council and cultists be responsible for all of this madness?"

I'm pretty sure having Len or Lil learn the scroll would be the best idea in the long term though I have no preference as to which one does it! And as much as I hate to ask, does that mean we can use it to cure Flynn's blindness rather than having to rely on Remove Blindness/Deafness?

Yes blindness is permanent, but it is also an 'ongoing spell effect' and the spell text does not state that dispel magic will not work, therefore the dispel would indeed be able to remove the blindness effect :)

Ben points at the sky

We'd best be going if we're to reach any shelter before nightfall.

He turns to walk away then pauses, looking back over his shoulder

Thank you, for bringing me news of my father, for telling me he tried to find me. I...

He looks away a for a moment, swallowing hard

I was very angry once, and I am sad my last words to him were filled with fury, but it makes a difference to me, that still he came to find me

He nods, as much to himself as to you. Jandra is watching him, a smile on her face, she looks across to you

You'll always be welcome around our fire, mind how you go and don't trust anyone...

The group begins to move off through the trees, leaving you to absorb all the things they've said.

After studying the scroll for a moment longer, Lenneth rolls it back up and hands it to Lilith. "I think this should go to you, first. Hopefully once you are able to write it to your book, you can teach it to me somehow."

She looks to the sky yet again. Flynn had been quiet ever since fleeing from the groaners, which worried her. Though she had only known him for a short time, a day if that, she already knew that Flynn was a talker. Silence from anyone like that was always worrying.

Flynn! Did you hear? Jandra gave us a scroll...the magic written on it should let us heal your blindness! Lilith needs to write it to her book so we'll always be able to work this sort of magic if we need to, but hopefully no more than a day...and you'll have your sight back. Your life back.

Directing her attention back at Ben, Jandra and their friends, she sighs and nods reluctantly. "I guess this is goodbye, for now...not all of the people within Solace are wicked and I'd like to try and help them if we still can." As she watches the small group begin to make their way south, she raises her hand in farewell. "Please...stay safe, stay alive. I hope we meet again."

Still clinging to Skyfall's neck he receives Lenneth's message and breathes a sigh of relief. He hoped she hadn't picked up on some of the darker thought he had had over the past couple of hours.

He did something then that he had never done, ordered Sky to land and to trot along beside the party on foot. For the first time the motion in the air was making him feel nauseous and he wasn't sure how well he would react if Sky suddenly caught sight of a hare and went streaking after it.

Euron listens on, the talk of the corruption in solace does not go down well with him as he feels in the pit of his stomach a knot forming. Before the other group leaves Euron calls out to them. "Good luck on your travels.. I hope we meet again. Maybe we'll head that way someday, i want to thank you for this information you gave us." He then looks down at the ground now unable to look Ben in the face. "You're father.. He was braver than me, he was a good man and would be happy you were alive. Keep his memory alive and know he loved you all the way tell the end."

"I would think only a small group know about the dark secrets in Solace Lenneth." He then nods. "Those are the people we need to help, i have more to say on this than most... but if they're doing what we think they're doing it's bad it's a path not many people come back from."

"Can you learn learn from the scroll and cure Flyn tomorrow Lilith? I want to check out this hollow under the castle, but i think we're back to square one we can't trust the council."

"Maybe not, but do we want to risk trying to find a place to camp when we know at least one of those cultists is still out there nearby? On the other hand, we'd need some sort of story to tell the others when we return with no Violet..."

"Something Azmerai said troubles me, too," she adds, frowning. "About the place we found under the Sandpoint cathedral...though we didn't find any signs of anyone being siphoned of their life force, the strange runes and markings we saw sound an awful lot like this place under Solace," she says, staring off in the general direction of Sandpoint, now surely nothing more than a pile of burnt rubble and debris. "And Jandra said something about protective magic that kept the groaners away until it just...stopped working. Could it be like what happened in the church? Are the two things connected somehow?"

"I don't think we should risk it tonight, that fight we had the cultists are roaming the forest i don't want our camp attacked by the same group. We say we didn't find her.. but we give them hope? say we found more tracks to search tomorrow?" Euron has felt lost since they arrived in Solace his hope for a better place in this world, but it never felt right to him and everything that's happened he just wants to know why.

"Under the church was a prison.. locking up ancient things, all the script was in necril. What was described does sound the same. All i know right now is i want to get back and find out what's down there and finally get to the bottom of all this."

Presuming you're making your way back towards Solace...

The sun has nearly set by the time you have hiked back through the forest and across the grasslands, and you can just see the ruined stone tower of Solace in the distance as the dwindling rays of sunshine relinquish their hold on the countryside around you, plunging everything in to shades of grey.

You are waved through the gate just as the wagon is rolled across the entrance. The gate guards look with dismay as they see you have not returned with Violet or Brae.

Where to first?

Unless anyone says otherwise, Flynn is going to disconsolatey bed down in the common room. In his current state he wants to draw as little attention to himself as possible.

Flynn trudges through the gate, the unfamiliar sound of Sky's talon clattering on the cobbles beside him. She nudges Flynn with her beak a couple of times but he pushes it away;

I can't play right now Sky, go on up to your perch now.

She gives a questioning squark but otherwise relents and flaps up to the broken tower

At a loss for anything else to say or do for now, Lenneth hesitantly pats the inconsolable halfling on the shoulder as he makes his way off to the common room. "Try to get some rest...gods willing, we'll wake you in the morning."

With a weary sigh, she turns to look at the others. "I suppose we should go report to the Council, or Radek, or whoever will speak with us. They'll likely want some sort of news...then we can go from there."

"They will want to hear from us.. I'd like to know if anything happened when we were away. But lets get this straight." He moves in closer lowering his tone. "We keep what we learnt about the hollow under the castle a secret, tomorrow we have to check it out. I hate living with secrets..." He pauses for a moment remember his biggest secret is out there for everyone, and is only glad that for now his friends seem to have stuck with him.

"I've lived with a big one, that won't be easy to get over... but this is something we need to find out about before anyone can stop us or clear up after themselves. If we find what we think we will down there we can bring it up to the council and then i hope.. i hope they finally just tell us what's going on here."

Ex-Shoanti Human (RIP)

"As much as it chafes to do so, I think Euron has the right of it. I think it best we hold out tongues for now, til we can search deeper."

OK as the general gist seems to be rest and then start the investigations in the morning... go see the Discussion thread!!

For a long time Flynn lies in the darkness.

Except, he knows the room is not fully dark. He can smell the acrid smoke of a candle burning, the greasy oil of a lamp, and hear two of the men in the common room talk quietly over what he assumed was game of chess.

But he lay in perfect, absolute darkness. Most of the time he wasn’t sure whether his eyes were open or not. He blinked hard, waved his hand right before his face. Nothing.

No one had spoken to him since he had returned. Lives had kindly guided him to a cot in the common room and left with only an awkward “Good night.” Flynn didn’t blame him. He could feel the awkwardness of others around him as well, mumbling as he undressed his armor and half wanting to help as he fumbled impossibly to hang his scabbard over the back of the headrest.

He realized that in the space of hours he had become the embodiment of everything these survivors could count themselves lucky for. They scrabbled to get through one more day - each and every day - and though they were tired and hungry and worn, none of them were helpless. Which is how he felt now.

It took a long time for sleep to take him, his thoughts were dark and often of the future. He wondered how long it would be before they would do something about him, cast him out or run a blade across his throat as he slept, not because they were evil or wished him harm directly, but because not only was he helpless, he was useless too. Skyfall could happily scour the countryside for an errant hare or smaller bird and feed herself merrily for as long as she cared to stay around. But he was another mouth to feed with diminishing stocks and could not even justify his share.

It hurt to think of Skyfall leaving him too, as she inevitably would when he was dead or wandering terrified through the fields beyond Solace. They had been together these past ten years since she had tumbled from her nest practically on top of him, and been abandoned by her mother as a runt. She had been his best friend even before all this and now he realized she was also his only link to the past, to a world that was better than this.

A tear runs from his blind eye and down his cheek. He is too tired to even wipe it away and mercifully, sleep swallows him soon after.

Euron nods as the decision of rest and explore tomorrow is met. He doesn't spend much time out of the room now when their back in Solace, the big reveal of his past put an end to that the looks got to him more than the shouting of abuse and insults. It reminded him of when his mother would have a look of disappointment whenever he got in trouble with the city watch.

If she were alive to see what i did to the world... He goes about his normal routine, taking his armor off and begins to clean it and edge his weapons. There wasn't much to talk about tonight, he will be lost in his head again just thinking over everything he's been through and all the lives that were lost.

Laying down he tries to sleep prays to Pharasma, but the voices won't stop. His guilt is always the loudest when it's quiet when he has time to get trapped in his head. He knows what he did... everyone knows now, his time will come to pay for all he did. But for now he has to keep pushing forward, for his past will catch up to him and devour him.

Nice scene setting RP chaps :)

After drifting off in to an uneasy slumber, a general malaise pervades your sleep. You dream of darkly glowing runes snared around your limbs, gnashing groaner teeth dragging across your flesh, all the while a grey light falls across you. The light might have been bright once, but standing with you is a robed figure, the very shadows themselves recoil from it, and the air itself seems polluted by its presence. It moves to drop the hood of its robe, but then starlight suddenly bathes the area you are standing in. Between the twinkling glow and the darkness of the natural shadows, the robed figure is grey, forming an impossible third pole between light and dark. The walls around you disappear and...

...and you realise you have awoken to the sound of screams.

Flynn:
Skyfall is screeching very loudly inside your head, something about the two legs she shares her perch with making much noise and waking her up, and there being slow/smelly two-legs in large numbers around your new nest

perception DC 10:
You hear cries of alarm from outside by the guard post/wagon, and Mallis' distinctive voice is shouting 'Alarm' repeatedly

perception DC 18:
There does not appear to be much response from inside the keep at the moment, no-one else in the common room has woken up. This could be associated to the disease/poison everyone has been subject to, but is unusual nonetheless.

Lenneth had retired to the group's shared room with the others, curling up with Indigo and expecting sleep to come swiftly after yet another mentally and physically exhausting day. But sleep did not come. As she lay there in the darkness, she could hear the now-familiar sounds of her companions as they slept...or at least tried to. She thought she could hear mumbling coming from Euron's direction at one point but she thinks better of checking on him.

Better leave him be...better leave them all be, for tonight. We each need time alone to reflect...plan...mourn.

Her thoughts drifted to those that had fallen. She had seen plenty of death since the Red Harvest, but most seemed hazy in her mind now and she found that she could barely remember their names or faces. But things had been different since Sandpoint. Turrey, Meiko, Kaiya, Tali, Valex, Polonius...all were etched indelibly into her memory. Something had begun to change in her at Sandpoint, as if she had found to courage to care about others again in spite of never knowing if each day would be her last, or theirs.

When she thinks of Polo, she smiles. At least they had honored his last wish, even if it was purely by dumb luck. Even if he didn't live to face tomorrow, Ben now knew just how much his father had loved him and how hard he'd fought to find him and keep him safe.

Lenneth's smile fades as she's gripped by a sudden tightness in her chest, followed by the sharp ache of loss. She knew the ache would dull in time, but that it would never completely go away.

I miss you, friend. You helped keep us going, took charge, always had a plan; Valex was always so calm and level-headed...and now you're both gone and I don't know what to do. It's so hard to keep focused now, we all want to pull in different directions and I'm afraid that we'll fall apart if it doesn't stop.

She wipes at the tears forming in her eyes and takes a shuddering breath to try and calm herself. If she began to cry now, it would surely wake and upset the others. Sniffling, she squeezes Indigo tightly before closing her eyes once more...

"!"

Lenneth bolts upright in bed and looks around wildly for a moment, apparently having given in to sleep at last and disoriented by the strange dream she had just had. As the fog in her mind lifts, she suddenly becomes aware of the cries of alarm coming from outside.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 3 + 2 = 19

"Alarm! Wake up, something's wrong! Why isn't there more noise? Where is everyone?" she cries, jumping out of bed and grabbing for her gear.

...Skyfall...! Flynn cries as he is wrenched from sleep.

Was it a dream? he wonders. No one in the common room stirs but then he hears someone shouting close by. It sounds like Lenneth.

Wha... what's happening? Are we under attack..? Flynn says, pulling back the bedclothes and stumbling forward. He trips over something heavy and falls to the ground, bumping his chin on the flagstones hard enough to make his teeth rattle.

He staggers back to his feet, feeling around him in empty air.

Someone tell me what's going on! he cries, almost in a panic.

Sleep comes but you couldn't call it restful, another dark dream he had become accustomed to them but this one felt like there was something behind it.. he pushes forward with the dream. A waking dream a vision he had one before and wanted to glem understands to this but before he could find any, before he could glimpse the reason for it he was awaken by shouting and screams.

Euron jumps up from his sleep, hearing the cries outside and Lenneths shouts for alarm, he reaches for his weapon as he stands up wobbling slightly the daze of sleep still about him. "Is it the cultists ?!" He shouts in panic then sees Lenneth grabbing her gear he snaps out of it and then frantically begins to grab his weapons and don his armor. "Everyone get up! We have to wake the castle and get down to the court yard."
