"Well, then,"Gavin says, standing and wobbling a little, "It is decided - we meet tomorrow morning at dawn at the... the Eel, is it? And Bedu, you magnificent man, of course you are coming with us. We'll need someone to talk these people senseless before we beat them. Or something like that. You will talk to them and the Bonestihle will break their legs, Steele will tumble around and run them through, I will hit them with my cup, and Saltenlock will strangle them and then make them explode. I think it is a fantastic plan. I also think I have had too much to drink, and should be going home. Probably, the morning comes too soon."

Greatly enjoying the walk home, Gavin doesn't even mind the cool spring evening, ideas of dashing heroism running through his head, and later stories to impress Moira with, in his new tavern. Slipping, not so quietly into his room, Gavin disrobes and flopping onto his cot under the window, throws open the curtain...

And indeed the morning comes too soon. The rooster owned by the tanner's wife starts crowing from its rooftop coop, and the sun begins its rise over the rooftops, the light slowly making its way into the apartment and Gavin turns restlessly in his sleep, his mind starting to turn, something nagging at the back of his jumbled dreams, and sitting upright in a jolt, Gavin recalls the appointment with his dinner companions.

Besmara's blasted balls! he thinks, and jumping out of bed, stumbling around, he begins grabbing his newly purchased weapons and fumbling into his armor. Grabbing a quick shot of whiskey to clear his head and half a loaf of leftover sourdough, he hustles out the door and towards the docks, thinking grimly of the business the come, daydreams about impressing girls and new taverns replaced with unsettling thoughts of violence and a lurching stomach.

Seeing the group ahead of him he breaks into a trot, a clanking, sweating thing shuffling up the street. "Sorry. Sorry, so sorry. I'm not a morning person, I'm afraid."

Erick raises an eyebrow at the inebriated boy. "I'm not sure where The Eel is. I had suggested The Empty Grave, in Azure district. It's a tavern that caters to sailors outside the harbor. If you prefer The Eel, I have no objections, but I'll need directions to it." Can't hold his liquor, puppy... Not sure where The Eel is? Couldn't find it on the maps of the city?

The next morning, Erick is up before dawn, all his gear double checked, his pistol reloaded. He eats a light meal consisting of bread, water and salted beef, enough to give him energy for the upcoming day, but not enough to make him sick or slow down his reflexes. Fifteen minutes of calasthenics before donning his armor also get's him fully awake and alert.

He reaches The Empty Grave a good half hour before dawn. Leaning against the wall of the tavern he waits for first his contacts, then his new business allies.

Given Gavin shows up late, I will not respond to Gavin's post until everyone else has shown up...

Bedu smiles at the positive responses, then links a hand around the elbow of Gavin and helps him home.

The following morning he is up in time for a light breakfast of dwarf porridge laced with honey. Then quickly heads over to meet Gavin and makes sure he gets to the Empty Grave on time.

This is a different Bedu, he is armed and armored in leathers in preparation for aggressive negotiation. Refreshed and happy to be busy, with a small pouch of gold at the end of it, the halfling struggles to keep up with Gavin as he breaks into a run. Sweaty rivers pour down his bald pate by the time they both stop at the Empty Grave.

"Good morning, Erick."

the group begins to disperse, Tessa makes sure to grab whatever papers/documents that she had drawn up for them. She approaches Lady Vanderboren. "I think you've assembled quite the unique group for this task. If the ring is still on the vessel, I'm confident we will be able to retrieve it for you - barring any unforeseen complications of course. Even those can be overcome with the proper planning. Now then I think I am gong to depart as well and get some shuteye. We shall report back in on the morrow. Good evening and thank you for the fine dinner and wine."

Tessa makes her way west out of the Merchant District and heads back north up to the Champion District. As she makes her way back to the inn up on Bloodcobble Way, she passes by Aunt Kylie's.

Two men who were leaning in the shadows against the wooden wall push off and begin to made lude gestures towards Tessa. Having had a good fill of the nice Lady's wine and due to the fact that she had a job to do in the morning, she continues past them without giving them a piece of her mind.

Why did I ever pick the inn across from the brothel? This was not one of my better decisions.

She heads up to her room and promptly passes out on her bed. Either the wine or exhaustion from the days events cause her to wake up much later than she anticipated. As she rubs her temples and tries to ignore the minor headache that is keeping time for her, she tries to figure out how she is ever going to make it all the way to the Empty Grave on time. With a sigh she realizes she'll need to pay for brief passage over to the Noble district and then cut south into Azure - no time to take the long walk across.

She gathers her working gear and sets out on her way. She stuffs a few pieces of bread into her mouth and heads over to the docks. She deposits a few coins for passage across the calm waters and eventually arrives at her destination. More or less on time, a little less probably. She makes her way in ten minutes after everyone else has arrived. Trying to play it off like she isn't late she asks, "Good morning everyone! Who's ready to pick up some gold coin?!"

She smiles and looks over the group and asks, "Alright, ready to head over?"

I'm assuming Kutsya is here already and Tessa is the last one in. If this isn't the case, just make a note of it.

While you are regrouping at the inn, a little kid enters the inn. he has some bruises and a black eye.
"mr. Bonestihl..." said in a sad and feeble voice while looking at the floor. "It didn't go well..."
"In shadowshore some of my friends were asking questions about Vark. There was a couple of men that beated them up for being nosy. And at the port we were keeping an eye on the ship. They were doing something on the ship and some kids tried to get close to see what were they doing. they got caught.
Then they all fought giving each other the blame for messing up, and I got this."
Says the kid pointing at his eye.
"They all refused to come with me to report back because they know that they won't get paid..."

Kutsya has a lot to think about on her way home from the party. Storming a ship, stealing a stolen ring. These are things she never thought to be doing, and she tried to consider how one could possibly prepare for such things?

She slept the sleep of the dead, but Master Kratzenklau scratched her awake well before dawn. "And what do you think of all this? There were some tricks I was hoping you could remind me of -- that healing spell, and the one that lets me whisper at a distance. But is there anything else that you would recommend?"

In response the crab scuttled over to the seamen's trunk which held some of her gear from her days on shipboard. After Kutsya opened it up, she saw several tools at bits of gear that might be useful in the event of a quick escape, so she packed them up.

After finishing her preparations and morning meditations, Master Kratzenklau leaped back to his favorite perch and Kutsya grabbed a hunk of three-day old bread and some saltpork that she could eat on the way. She nods at everyone as she arrives, but says little beyond mumbled hellos.

Please, Cayden Cailean, don't let any of us die today. I still have much work to do in your name, I promise you.

Shifting weight in his new armor and bouncing the flail a bit in his hand to judge its weight, Gavin stands at the ready for the group to depart, and as they approach the Blue Nixie, he falls to the side and back from the lead talker, ready to hit someone if the need arises, eyes darting around in his helmet feverishly, looking for signs of trouble.

Gavin will approach the ship 5' behind whoever is going to do the negotiating, a little to the right as well, if space allows, so that he can step up to any threats easily. Perception check please, as they approach the ship, looking specifically for threats, obvious or hidden.

On their way to the Blue Nixie, Kutsya tries to pretend she's just off to another day at the docks, but can't with the weight of the weapon on her belt. Everything around her seems more real and solid than it has in a while. There's no doubt in her mind that something is about to happen.

As soon as the ship pulls into view and she believes that they are about a minute away, Kutsya casts Mage Armor on herself. On the approach, she will study the ship, trying to figure out anything she can regarding its floorplan and the viability of any alternate ways to get on board, including swimming and climbing. Erick nods. "I've worked on a ship quite a bit, knocking around in my youth. I can do the talking then if you like." With that, assuming everyone is ready, he'll take point walking to the ship. He prefers to be in the front anyway. He makes sure his copy of the paperwork is tucked in his belt.

Upon reaching the dock, he looks for whoever is guarding the ship, and waves them down. "Ahoy, representatives of the ship's owner. We got our papers, no worries. She's sent us to check on the ship's status, and the status of the belongings still on board. As you can see, we're too few to sail her out of dock." He tugs the paperwork out with his left hand. His sword is on his belt so he'd have to draw it with his left hand, so unless they recognize the gun as a weapon, it should look like his weapon hand is free? Diplomacy, sense motive, perception, and profession (sailor) checks as appropriate. Erick tries to keep himself between the guards and the rest of the party for now, no need for them to get a good look at the others to size them up. If he can keep them concentrating on him, that's less information they'll have if and when hostilities arise.

I hoped to post this before anyone started to address the people at the pier. So Ihave to make a little retcon here.

When you arrive at pier 5 you search for the Blue Nixie and the guards that usually bar the way for Lavinia.
But you find none of the above.
Actually you find that no one is guarding the pier. And the blue Nixie is not moored at all, as a matter of fact is moored to a float about 100 feet from the pier end.
Some fisherman are still preparing their boats for the day. Whoever brought the Blue Nixie there did it in the middle of the night, and possibly, was planning to return before the sunrise.

Are there any rowboats or something larger like a jollyboat ferry moving around the dock waters? Can we see anyone on board? If no boat then where is the nearest place that Bedu could get one?

Bedu looks at the prospect of swimming and shakes his head. These waters are not known for their cleanliness.

Holding his hand above his brow to shield them from the early morning sun, Gavin looks at the Blue Nixie, floating sanguinely, and the young man tries to pick out signs of activity on the ship. Dread creeps up his spine at the thought of having to traverse that water in his armor, but he forces himself to discard any doubts and turns to the others.

"Well, Lady Vanderboren probably wouldn't be pleased if we let a little obstacle stop us. I suppose we need to get on that boat."

Walking over to one of the fisherman getting ready to cast off, Gavin leans down and jingling his coin purse, says, "Aye there, friend. How much to ferry my friends and I here out to that ship and wait until we need you to take us back? I'm sure we can offer more than you'll make in a day's work on the water, and you'll curry some favor with The Accidental God as well - this is his work we are doing." It is in a manner of speaking, if you look at it in a certain way, at any rate.

Perception check to find activity or motion on the boat. Diplomacy if needed to ask the fisherman to take us to the Nixie.

Sorry about that

"No, wait, let's see if the Harbor Master is involved in this. That ship is not supposed to be away from the dock. If he's not involved, he's going to have to explain why his right hand man took out a boat. It might even get the Lady's fine waved as having been paid, now that the man who says he didn't get it has been proven a pirate. Taking someone else's ship is piracy." Erick says with a malicious grin on his face. "If he is involved, we'll have him dead to rights, and then we can go out there and kick some ass."

The piers are full of all sort of fishing boats. You probably can ask any fisherman here to give you a quick ride to the Blue Nixie for a couple coppers. Which leads me.

The fisherman, a man in his early 30, looks at Gavin smiling.

"If it is Cayden work that you are doing I would be a fool to ask for silver. I'm pretty sure you know where to fetch some good wine. I'll take you to that ship if you promise that when I return from fishing you'll fetch me something better than the watered down crap my wife likes so much"

@Bedu & Gavin:
You know Erick's plan wont work. The harbor master is no simple port worker. He is actually a noble called Keltar Islaran, he is also kinda old and sickly. Before you get an audience with him the people on the blue nixie would have all the time to finish their job and bring the blue nixie back. It would be your word against Vark then.

@Gavin:
You think you hear a little bit of screaming coming from the Nixie. As if someone was shouting orders or was reprimanding someone.

As soon as one of his urchin's shows up, he takes his copy of the paperwork and hands it to the child. "Head straight to Lady Vanderboren, tell her Erick gave you this, and when he went to check the condition of the ship, the Harbor Master's assistant had sailed it away from the docks. Show this to her or her maid as proof you're working for me. Have her get the Harbor Master or some other authority she trusts and come down here ASAP. Get some of the other kids with you to run interference and make sure you get him here quickly. Call in more if you have to. There's silvers all around, and meals for a week if you can get them down here before we get that ship back in dock."

Erick then looks at Gavin and the rest. "Ok, I think that might solve two birds with one stone. Think you can talk your fishermen buddies in to keeping the dock tied up?" He asks the man Gavin is talking to. "Two gold pieces for an hour delay?" He holds out two gold pieces.

Diplomacy, profession (sailor) the whole nine yards

The fisherman moves his fishing nets and rods on a side to make space for the party. "We got a deal" says inviting you on board.

On the other hand his proposition to the fishermen doesn't go too well. Maybe it's the look of Erick that seems intimidating, or maybe is to avoid troubles at the docks but nobody really bite on the whole keeping the dock tied up.
Whenever approached with the proposition they politely decline, shying away a little, clearly not wanting to be involved.

You counter ninja'd me.

No, they just declined to tie up the dock for us, which means we have to get out to the ship and stop it from docking or he'll weasel out again. I think we should sabotage the rudder before we go on deck, I bet our white haired witch could do that. Just have to cut the ropes that pull it in a given direction. Then it's floundered.

Tessa listens as the fisherman decline to block the docks for the party. She hops on board the fishing vessel as she eyes the Blue Nixie. She nods to the fisherman once everyone is aboard and asks him to please be on their way as soon as possible.

Already the plan has gone to s%+*. Surprise. Oh well, I suppose we're going to have to work some magic out differently.

She turns to her party and in a hushed tone speaks so that the fisherman can not hear her. "Whatever is going on out there, I have a feeling that time is of the essence and we should make haste on our approach. Since the simple plan of boarding and searching is out of the question, we can make our approach through this vessel - but I expect it to not go smoothly. Based upon what Gavin has seen there is already trouble to be had. For those of you that are magically inclined, you may want to prepare yourselves."

Tessa studies the Blue Nixie and says, "If we can't block the docks, we need to find some way to prevent the ship from being able to move. This also means that the men on board are going to have to be dealt with as it seems entirely unlikely they are going to let us search the vessel peacefully. I think we need to prepare for ourselves for the less diplomatic approach."

Looking over her group she asks, "Ok, let's work out what we are each going to do when we get there. I suppose we still need to wave the papers at them, but I fully expect them to try and throw us overboard. We could try a diversion, with two or three of us trying to occupy the attention of those on board while the others search for the ring."

Looking at the oracle and witch she says, "We'll need Gavin or Kutsya to do their magic sensing thing as soon as we get close. How far away can you detect things anyway? Can you detect if it's a ring? How does that stuff work anyway?"

Turning back to Bedu she adds, "You have a way with words sir, I am thinking you may want to be the one doing the talking. Either Erick or myself, or both can back you up. Alternatively, I assume they are all men on board that ship. If so, I can try to keep their attention with a distraction while the rest of you search the ship."

Looking back between the entire group as the boat (hopefully) makes it way out to the Nixie she asks curiously, "Well? What ideas or thoughts do you have? We may be flexing our steel momentarily here."

I sure hope everyone here is reliable enough, we're about to find out I suppose!

Perception please. How many people are visible? What are they doing? is there a particular part of the ship we could approach more "stealthily"?

Shadow Lodge

@Tessa:
you see two heads on deck. but if someone is crouching or behind an obstacle you won't see him, so there could be up to a couple more. You don't see more than their heads so you can't really tell what they are doing. You can easily approach them from behind as no one seems to be on the quarterdeck. If you reach the side of the ship there are plenty of ropes hanging there that could allow you to climb into the deck.

Tessa surveys the ship ahead and relays what she sees to the group. "I can make out two heads on deck, but there could easily be more laying low or down below. I think we can easily approach them from behind as no one seems to be on the quarterdeck. Also, if we can have the fisherman take us to the side of the ship there are plenty of ropes hanging there that we could use to climb up to the deck. I'll suggest we use that method of entry unless someone has some other ideas."

Erick nods. "I'm not very stealthy, so I'll be the distraction for those that are." He looks down at his gun. "I'm extremely not stealthy." He chuckles. "Lets approach from behind, as we do, someone cut the ropes leading to the rudder. Without the rudder, they'll have to get it towed in, or get it fixed in place, all they can do is drift. That keeps them from getting it back to claim we attacked them on dock." He grins fiercely, obviously riding on adrenalin. "Let's let our stealthy people sneak up first, then I'll come up on the front most rope and make a bunch of noise, when they attack me, you lot fall on them from behind?" He adds to Tessa's plan. Huh, the floozy may know a few tricks afterall, maybe I don't need to carry the lot of them. Then he looks at Gavin. Well, not the whole lot of them.

Tessa looks at Erick as he looks down at his gun. She grins mischievously. Probably a little toooooo mischievously considering the potential trouble ahead.

Ah, well, perhaps he does know how to have a good time? We'll see how he handles himself when the moment arrives.

Tessa puts her hands on her hips and mock pouts at Erick. "And why is it YOU get to have all the fun up front?"

She shrugs her shoulders and then points a finger at Erick. "Fine. You can go first this time, but NEXT time I go first." She nods to herself as if that's settled and looks over the other three teammates.

Looking to Gavin she asks curiously, "Terrestrial weapon, does Cayden Cailean favor us this morn? Anything particular you'd like to add?"

Turning to Kutsya she nods, "I see, well that's unfortunate. I suppose we're going to need to get you all over this ship then so you can see what you, erm, see? Feel? However it works."

She presses a single finger to her lips and stifles a laugh, "I do not think we will need to be stealthy for long, I expect to have them all rounded up and taken care of in short order."

She nods as if matters are all in order and then asks curiously to no one in particular, "Shall we create a signal code word in case someone is in dire need of assistance or if the matter has gone entirely backwardly unexpected?

She looks up thinking and asks, "How about, smelly fishcakes?"

Erick chuckles softly. "Sir Marshant used to yell 'BALLS!' at the top of his lungs when things went in the chamber pot. Most people don't know what it means, as anything other than frustration, and when it does go in the chamber pot, you don't want to have to remember something unnatural to say."

@Kutsya:
You are confident that you can jam the rudder, if the ship comes close enough you might even be able to do that without having to swim. the problem is...with what? You need something to jam the rudder with. The ideal would be a sword or a spear, or any object that has a thin straight point. your pick would be difficult to lodge into place since it should have a beak shaped point and an hammer head. unless you want to drive the point deep into the ship, but that could attract attention, also it may sabotage the ship in a more permanent way than you may like, You would not be able to control the ship yourselves if you happen to smash the rudder.

"So I talk with Erick and Gavin boarding up the ships ladder ahead to clear a space, while Tessa and Kutsya climb the ropes to the rear. I intend to ask for Soller so that he is that most important of targets. The one who matters. simple but effective and as Erick here mentioned, hard and fast when they stop listening. If I can get a story out then maybe some of the crew will be distracted just don't attack them then. I wish you all the luck of the halflings. May your attacks strike true."

"Gavin, give me one of your javelins," Kutsya says abruptly. "I need it to jam the rudder."

She then looks at the rest of her group appraisingly, and removes a small animal bladder from her belt and hands it to Erick. "You know what this is, yes? If you end up underwater, smash it open and it will take you to the surface. You look like you need it most. I also have a marker buoy in my pack. I was thinking to use it in case the ring went overboard, but I can drop it before we board if we want to set a meeting point."

Then she makes a few arcane gestures and throws a small piece of twisted wire at Erick, which vanishes the moment it touches him. "For the next ten minutes, anything you mouth, I will hear. And the other way around."

Kutsya mouths the words Smelly Fishballs, after which Erick -- and only Erick -- hears them in his ears as a clear whisper.

That's a Buoyant Balloon. Standard lifesaving gear on shipboard, I should think.

If there's a ladder on the side, Erick would probably take that, he's supposed to be the distraction right? Then he wouldn't even need help, as climbing a ladder is DC 5

Erick rolls his eyes at the code word, but nods. Silliest thing I ever heard. He mouths "Right" back to Kutsya, and then pulls two daggers off his arm and hands them to her as well. "In case the javalen doesn't work, or you just feel like throwing one at someone."

Erick's face goes calm as they get closer to the ship, and his breathing becomes slow and steady. His eyes focus on the ship, and his eyes go completely dead. "Killing time." He says in a dead voice.

There is a new map, you can see it above.

Erick climbs the ropes and reaches for the deck. He sees a couple of men there, but you can hear footsteps below deck, you count at least 3.
They don't seem to have noticed you yet.
The one closest to you is looking down the grate. He stomps the grate a couple of times and you hear a strange Shrill on reply.

the rest of the party has plenty of time to get in position if they want.

Before Erick climbs up, he mouths at Kutsya. "Give me your copy of the documents, I sent mine off with the kid." Once he gets the papers, he climbs up and mouths. "Two on deck, 3 below, and some sort of creature in the hold."

He starts walking toward the ones on deck, and as soon as one looks up, he holds up the documents. "Just what the hell is going on? Lady Vanderboran sent me down here to check on her ship, and I find you lot using it? You better get whoever is in charge here right freakin now to explain this before I report you to the Harbor Master for Piracy." He says it loudly, and in a stern voice, designed to carry to the fishing boat.

Bedu steps to one side of Erick by ten feet and loads his crossbow. He smiles at the beautiful morning and nudges Gavin. He whispers quietly, "Sarenrae's with us this dawn. Look at the golden sky. Let us see the next one, Gavin."

As Erick begins to climb Tessa leans out of the boat looking for the ropes. Once she finds them she leaps out of the boat reaching for the rope...

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

... and grabs a hold of the rope, catching herself.

Yeah, I probably could have just reached out and took it in hand - but what fun is that?

As the men begin to climb the ladder she turns back to the fisherman and says "We'll be back momentarily, please do not leave until we return.[b]"

Tessa looks to the men as they depart and remarks, [b]"Make sure to leave some for us. See you shortly."

She looks to Kutsya and asks, "Ready?"

As the woman begin to move across the ropes they hear Erick shouting as he ascends.

Tessa grins as she thinks, Well that's not exactly how I would have approached it, but the man definitely has some balls.

Looking at the dwarf she murmurs, "We better hurry up and get this done before they toss him overboard. Do you need any help with that?"

Do you need any checks from us to make it to the rudder or for the sabotagery?

Shadow Lodge

I already made the check for "knowledge on how to jam the rudder". Now that she have a javelin to do it is automatic. This might just make you lose the first turn

Erick rolls his eyes. "Well darn, it looks like this fellow has Smelly Fish Balls." I swear to god that's the dumbest code phrase ever, I'm never saying it agiain... He starts to pull his pistol, but then Gavin races up and engages the cutlass man. Damn, he's ruining my shot.

So instead of pulling his gun, he calmly walks around the cutlass bearer, slowing down only slightly to hop up on the rowboat before hopping back down behind him. C18->B18->A17->B16 As he walks, he draws the 9-ring broadsword from his hip, the rings ching ching'ing with each step, especially the hops to and from the boat. "That was a life ending mistake, my friend." He tells the cutlass wielding sailor.

Erick maneuvers around the smuggler and before he realizes he has been surrounded Erick Exotic blade descends on him.
With a horrible cracking sound the blade buries itself in his flesh, shattering his clavicle like glass and cracking the first rib. His body collapses immediately and falls on the deck, unconscious and severely bleeding way before he hits the ground.
The other smuggler is terrified at that sight. He points his crossbow towards Erick hoping to get rid of that menace.

Light crossbow: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14

But the bolt doesn't hit the mark. Hysterically he takes another bolt and tries to reload his light crossbow visibly shaking.
Meanwhile from under the deck another smuggler climbed up the stairs and emerged.
Another one exits from the door just below quarterdeck with his rapier unsheathed.
Behind the same door you all hear a raspy voice "Throw them overboard one piece at a time."

Whoops I jumped bedu .. well .. he missed anyway Consider number 3 not yet in the deck and appearing after your turn.

Kutsya shakes her head at Tessa's question. Fixing rudders was hard -- jamming them was easy. She climbs across the ropes to the rudder, looking for all the world like an oversized spider as she uses her eight braids to help her climb. If #5 has a drawn weapon, then Erick will charge him (stopping on the other side of the mast and hitting him. If he's not got a drawn weapon, then Erick will charge past him and instead charge #2.

Erick snorts at Gavin's words, and then trots toward his next enemy. As he does, metal jingles ominously and boots tread heavily but surely on the deck. "You lot attacked us, anyone with a weapon in hand dies. Anyone on the deck weaponless lives."
