Apparently having a time limit was really good for me... This blasted sphere grid system is dangerous for me- I just spent hours not even advancing the plot, just grinding kills, because I had two characters headed for the same node and I wanted to see who'd get there first (even though I knew both would be able to select it).

Yeah, I didn't really dither around when I originally played it either - the only sidequest I did was to get Auron's superweapon. I also basically only used Auron, Tidus, Yuna, and Lulu. I'd like to play it again more thoroughly and make use of some of the other characters; I remember in your first playthrough you used Kimahri a lot, whereas I think I used him in literally one battle.

Sorry, had quite the day yesterday. Will post up sometime this morning.

Me (last night at midnight, when ange went to bed): I better not turn on Final Fantasy or it'll be another 2am night...

Me (two hours of surfing the Internet on my phone later): dammit...

:)

I'm pulling the trigger today on the ps3/ffx so I can put some time in on it this weekend.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Lol, nice

Maybe your obsessive grinding and grid pathing will consume more time than my blitzball and general meandering, and I'll catch up to you in gameplay. I doubt it though.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Good news- it seems I only need 70 of these items I've been farming for the enchant! I might grind a little longer (tomorrow) though because there's cacatuars here that I can steal from to get chocobo feathers, which are appear the balls for mixing (Rikku's limitbreaker].

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

I started a second game of ffx just for screwing around with bizarre grid paths (like melee-lulu). I changed Tidus' name to T-Deuce and I imagine him being like the P-diddy, or Kanye West, of his time... just drunk on his own legend... and now when he acts like a whinny b#!$! it makes me laugh every time.

I'm going to use Kimahri fairly heavily in the early game and see how it goes, but I'm guessing that I'm probably going to pretty much ignore him again in the long run. It just seems like his ability to learn monster attacks isn't going to be as fun/awesome as 'enemy skill' was in FFVII, as it looks like he can only use them as overdrives.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

yeah, his enemy skill ability isn't executed very well in my opinion (you can only use them as overdrives and there's only like a dozen of them that you can learn). the thing that makes him really useful is that he starts with good Str, HP, MP, and Magic power and on both grids its pretty easy for him to pick up abilities from multiple paths so he makes for a good utility guy. I think in standard grid mode he can actually pick up some people's higher end abilities and +4 stat boosts pretty early too.

I'm actually holding off on advancing some characters on the grid until I find spheres to put in the empty nodes where they start (standard grid). So I'm basically min-maxing as if I had limited nodes even though comparatively I don't. Also, not having advanced anyone but Yuna, I've only had one challenging fight so far (the underwater Sin spawn Tidus and Wakka fight on the way to Kilika). Technically I didn't advance Yuna until after that fight, but I've been wandering the woods of Kilika fighting stuff with her leveled and it's been pretty easy, and I've only used her aeon once to deliver an overdrive overkill on a random plant boss guy. Hopefully the random encounters pick up in difficulty.

My other main issue with Kimahri is that he doesn't seem to say anything, and part of my enjoyment is the random stuff people say in combat. I recall that eventually they even talk to each other in combat, though maybe that's just in some plot battles.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

he does start to talk (not too much farther in than you are, iirc). in my chinese fire-drill game I've been advancing everyone but all into paths that aren't theirs... I'm in about the same spot and so far everyone is still most effective at what they started out good at (so functionally I haven't improved them at all), and I haven't had too much trouble with any of the fights yet either.

Sorry for the break, I'll try and post up in gameplay today.

I've added a spoiler for treasure on the campaign page to keep track of everything you acquire; I already added the supplies you'll be given upon your departure.

Sense Motive +3 | Perception +3 (lowlight vision); Initiative +3 (always act in surprise round) | Active Effects: --

so, is this basically a single use item? as I read it, i can cast a spell into it while its in the leather but then after 24 hours its falls to the ground... and if i try to pick it up it'll make a reflex attack at +20 against my reflex defense of 13... so, I'll never be able to pick it up a second time?

Updated language to be more clear. The intent is that the user may freely grab and stow the item per an ioun stone, but if not immediately stowed, or if someone's trying to physically grab it after it's been turned off by a dispel magic or to steal it out of the air, the Reflex attack is made.

In the latter scenarios, you and most other people would be successful only 1/20 times on average - a saving throw attack of 1 always fails, just like a normal save of 20 always succeeds. We have to come up with a better term than "saving throw attack."

Am I waiting on you or are you waiting on me?

Sense Motive +3 | Perception +3 (lowlight vision); Initiative +3 (always act in surprise round) | Active Effects: --

You're waiting on me. Sorry- busy day. Adulting is the worst.

No worries - no rush, I just wanted to be sure :)

Narrator / GM

I put up the time breakdown of each day on this alias's profile - it's actually where I copied it from to post in Helorus. And I'll continue to update the treasure list on the campaign page. I'm working on putting an NPC list up on the campaign page as well; obviously it'll take me some time due to the sheer number of people Vernalis has interacted with. Also thinking of doing a 'lore' tab to summarize what you've learned about the world (for instance: 'Aerugo is the capital city of the province containing Bergmann; the people of Bergmann believe that free men no longer live there.')

Any other clarification, reference, or improvement suggestions?

Hm, I see now that just using English for Viridian has made it equivalent to Common, and now if/when your native Common is spoken again it won't be distinguished by language; however it seems silly to post the majority of this adventure's dialogue in a different language w/the English behind spoilers. So I'll preface the speech that Vernalis understands with an ooc tag denoting it's language, unless he's using a comprehend languages spell.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

yeah- with just the two of us spoilers don't make a ton of sense... i'm totally on board with using english (annotated with ooc language indicators) for any language I understand and unidentified gibberish for languages I don't. You can reserve spoiler for written text that I could decipher with linguistics.

Using the (V) designation for Viridian. I'm pretty sure all the new languages will have different starting letters, so for now we'll just go with the first letter. Common will be (C), but I'll use the entire language name for racial languages, such as the elemental tongues and Draconic.

FYI I make opposed checks for detecting Bluff in secret, and will copy & post them if you are successful. I'll try to convey your general appraisal of someone in their text, but I don't want to flat out make assumptions about how Vernalis interprets behavior - if you're ever in doubt and want an objective "read" on someone/thing, posting a Sense Motive check as you did seems like a good way to do it.

Also FYI I kind of do the same thing for Perception checks if there's no obvious reason you'd be making a Perception check, so as to avoid inducing metagaming.

Sense Motive +3 | Perception +3 (lowlight vision); Initiative +3 (always act in surprise round) | Active Effects: --

I'm not sure where/how you're making the hidden rolls but the mechanics of the board's random number generator won't let you copy/paste from one thread to another... also, it saves numbers once generated so if you roll a 5 for a check that fails when you preview it and then you never actually post that roll because it fails, the next time you do the same thing I'll get that 5 again... (I've actually heard that the number goes down over time so that people can't sit on a 20 they know is coming, but I don't know that for sure).

I would simply copy and paste the results from a preview in an unrelated thread, like this:

NPC / Bluff: 1d20 + 50 ⇒ (19) + 50 = 69
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Or even just roll a d20 and post the results, if I knew where any of my d20s were... :(

Though in the above example, I wouldn't bother, given the impossibility for success; however that shouldn't really be a common, or even uncommon, scenario.

If you prefer, I can drop unlabeled, unmodified rolls behind a spoiler, as I remember you doing in the RotRL.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

You can do it however you want, I just wanted to make sure I didn't get shackled with the same bad roll over and over because you were unaware of the RNG mechanics. I always found the unlabeled dice in a spoiler to be the easiest solution.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

I had to stop racing that blasted chocobo trainer to avoid smashing the controller. I'm pretty sure that at this point I've spent more time on this flipping race than I did dodging lightning and my best time is still 10.5 seconds too slow (in a race that takes less than a minute).

Hmm. I vaguely recall there being a chocobo trainer, but I don't think I bothered on my playthrough.

Narrator / GM

Dice for secret rolls: 10d20 ⇒ (3, 16, 10, 3, 5, 19, 6, 8, 6, 15) = 91

Sorry, my internet was basically down this weekend. Will have post up this morning.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

I'm trying to get all of the celestial weapons... so far I have all but wakka (because I haven't played blitzball since the plot game) and Tidus (because I can't win that blasted race).

I don't know if you checked these or comparable suggestions out:

chocobo race advice 1, chocobo race advice 2.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Thanks. I actually had a pretty busy day today and haven't been able to keep up with posting, muchless play ffx but if I find some time tonight I'll certainly give these a try (the second one in particular seems very helpful).

Sense Motive +3 | Perception +3 (lowlight vision); Initiative +3 (always act in surprise round) | Active Effects: --

so... busy weekend, or are you waiting on something more from me?

Busy weekend; I'll post up today.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

omega weapon is down.

i saved it but not over the most recent save... i'm debating doing it again because I didn't overkill him (which results in more treasure), and Rikku wasn't 'out' when he died (and her celestial weapon doubles the amount of gil you get for killing something). i'm confident i could beat him again... the biggest hang up is just that he's a ways away from the nearest save sphere so i'd have to go through the hassle of fighting my way to him again...

Chocobo Eater is down.

I fought him twice after realizing that Auron had a fire weapon he could have equipped the first time, to see if I could beat him any faster than I did with the use of Ifrit. The second time I knocked him off the cliff and got some Lvl 1 key spheres which was nice.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

I'm so glad I fought him over again. I got the overkill and instead of dropping 3 level 4 key spheres he dropped 6! Plus the first time he dropped a ring (for yuna) with break hp limit (she's at like 5k hp) and 1 empty slot; this time he dropped a shield (for tidus) with break hp limit (which he was at) and 2 empty slots.

Also, I still haven't been able to unlock tidus' celestial weapon, but I did create (through customizing) a 'save the queen' which has double AP, double overdrive, and overdrive->AP

The candy canes have reared their ugly striped heads again. Will post when I can.

Just a heads up about rations. I'm going to assume rules/inventory-wise that your day's rations are consumed in the evening as part of your rest period unless something specific in-game prevents it, so you have 4 days rations remaining. With current rations you'll be fine through day 9, go without food and water on day 10, and feel the effects of thirst in the 'day' period of day 11. Given the Bergmann's information and helpful nature, Vernalis has no reason to think that he won't reach Aerugo before running out of rations.

Sense Motive +3 | Perception +3 (lowlight vision); Initiative +3 (always act in surprise round) | Active Effects: --

If at any point it looks as though running out of food/water could be an issue I can take 10 on survival to hunt/forage as I go (though that slows me to half my normal overland speed). Also, I'll try everyday to use abstemiousness (partly to try to stretch my rations and partly to try to figure out when/how/why it works or doesn't).

Sense Motive +3 | Perception +3 (lowlight vision); Initiative +3 (always act in surprise round) | Active Effects: --

Also- taking 10 on survival (for a 15) should, I believe, be enough to scavenge firewood and the like? I will do that as often possible rather than rolling, please.

Yeah, I misremembered the rules; was giving you a Survival check vs DC 17 (15 normal + 2 due to scarcity of non-grass resources) to avoid any environmental hazard checks, while instead it's that a successful Survival DC 15 grants you a bonus on the environmental Fort check.

Sense Motive +3 | Perception +3 (lowlight vision); Initiative +3 (always act in surprise round) | Active Effects: --

So, my stealth check was accidentally correct the first time... I'm at +2 from Dex and my one feat grants +2 to all untrained skill checks; the -2 Dex from fatigue translates to a -1 on the check, +3 total.

Also, sorry it took so long to post. I was running an errand when I got your text and then forgot by the time I got home.

Probably won't have a post up until tomorrow.
