Yes Umros, everyone is responding separately.
Okay guys, we're ready to start! If you haven't already go ahead and read the opening flavour post.
For this scene I want to try something called a Skill Challenge. It's a mix of stuff I've heard of, and a bit of homebrew rules. Hopefully it'll be fun, and if y'all like it I'll incorporate it more into the game as we progress.
For now it basically works like this:
Each round you guys can do one of a couple things; You can perform a check of your choice, you can cast a spell (if your char is able to), or you can perform a non-combat combat act (ie Fire a "warning shot" with your bow, or chop loose a rope with your sword. Some martial act that isn't designed to hurt or kill).
Now for this first S.C. I'll go ahead and tell you the DC to pass is 10 across the board (it is the FIRST thing y'all are doing after all!). The idea is to be creative and ingenuous with your actions and RP. If you're uncertain about whether something is allowed, go ahead and try it! I'll be ruling on the fly for some of these things because I'm positive I haven't thought of all the things y'all might come up with. You are all competing against the fighter woman, to beat her to The Hole you all, collectively, need 6 passes to win. But only 3 fails to lose! So choose your actions carefully! I hope this will be fun!
So, the game is officially started! Pick a check or action to perform, make your roll, and describe what your character is trying to accomplish!

Hey Quirel, upon perusing Taineshes profile, I've got a couple questions.
I think you're short a feat, as a human wizard, you get two feats to choose. One for level one, and one for being Human. Scribe Scroll is a free feat for wizards at level one.
I can't find where you rolled your hit die. Did you get a 4 on your d6? Or did you roll a 2 and use your Favoured Class Bonus for the other 2 hit points?
Also it looks like all the DEX based skills are 1 short. Your modifier is +3, not +2. So you should get a bump for those! :)

Profession Hunter + Bow Crafter: 1d20 + 6 + 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 6 + (9) + 5 = 26
Doing some math for the sake of comparison vs a supposed five way split of 1000 gold. We'll get into the specifics of Sparks' work later, I expect, but between splitting her time between two or tasks and with certain troubles she is having lets say she on average only makes around 5 gold in profit a week after all her expenses.

Hey guys, Umros/Nether brought up an interesting point to me. Technically, since Tainesh hasn't told anyone about the illusion, you'd all need to make a Will save DC 15 to disbelieve it. Since Sparks posted before this was brought up, we'll go ahead and let this one go as a freebie. You can dictate whether your chars believe or don't. But something to think about in the future! :D

So... I really enjoy this story and its mystery and all of our characters, but the pace of updates is starting to bother me. Chewie, I know you've had some unavoidable delays in the past, but now I'm growing concerned that you aren't committed to this game. You've posted just two updates since the beginning of the month and things have been very sluggish for a good deal longer than that. If not for your occasional, unrelated tweets, I'd be left wondering if something hadn't happened to you!
If we're going to continue this game, which I really want to do because I've enjoyed it so far, then let's do it and have fun with it and commit to it. If we aren't, then I'd like to know so I can write up a short story explaining Sparks' motivations and then quit fretting over the lack updates.
Thanks. :)

Here, allow me.
*Clears throat*
Chewie, you're playing two games. One with three-player co-op, the other with four players to a fireteam. Four is bigger than three, so the latter game is obviously better than the former one and you should spend more time playing it.

If 6 hours leaves Cath fatigued, then that's fine. I think it's silly for 6 hours to count as -2 to Dex/Str… might as well stay up the whole night and not sleep at all for the same penalty (which just seems weird).
What do you think about a -1? It sounds like it's a House Rules kind of thing, so whatever the GM says goes.

Heh, I know what you mean about the coffee. My roommates take theirs with 3 cream and 3 sugar. I'm down to 2 of each, but it won't be long now before I'm down to 1 of each.
As for your post, consider having it end with Tainesh going on her watch, rather than ending her watch. After all, we don't know if something will happen while she's up and about yet!

I assume recovering hp and ability damage still requires 8 hours of rest?
I'd prefer the rest requirements to be equal regardless of class, but I don't really have a counterargument for your reasoning, Diaspora. This is your game; I'll go with it. :)
I tend to take my coffee black but my teas with a dash of milk.

Just a suggestion; I thought it would make sense for 6 hours of rest to be sufficient for being rested for the next day, but healing and recovery would require 8 hours.
I kind of like the approach here: http://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/glossary#TOC-Rest

Just dropping this here for my benefit: Spark's sister's name is Inapita Sasa which translates directly to "Flowing Now" but really means Flowing Current, as in a river or stream. I had to sit and puzzle my way through a bunch of silly time related meanings before I remembered what I actually meant! :p
Also, I think I've had Sparks shorten her sister's name to Inapita once or twice but I'm going to retcon that to Sasa as I like the sound and partial meaning better as a short form of her sister's full name.
Ragashingo |
As far as I can tell I've never named Sparks' mother or father. I needed to fix that so, to recap, the Njia’yawazi (Clearpath) family is:
Sparks is: Mkali Moto Kipande Njia’yawazi meaning "Bright Glowing Flakes" in reference to the bright specks of orange and red within her otherwise dark eyes.
Sparks' sister is Inapita Sasa Njia’yawazi meaning "Flowing Current" as Sparks' mother wanted (and largely got) the perfect setting for the birth of her second child. Inapita Sasa's name is sometimes shortened to just Sasa where it would be understood to mean "Stream" even though her full name is more in reference to the concept of the movement and sound of the water within a stream more than to a stream as a whole.
Sparks' mother will be: U'tulivu Nyeupe-nywele Malaika Njia’yawazi meaning "Serene White-haired Angel" as she was born with a full head of white hair and rarely cried or fussed during her first few days.
Sparks' father will be: Nne Kiume Kizazi Njia’yawazi meaning, "Fourth Male Offspring." Not quite as creative, but that fits with the temperament of his family when he was born.
Again, for future reference for myself as I don't think Sparks has said any of her family's names to the others yet. :)

Ever see someone do that spinning plates trick?
He can spin a plate and balance it on a long metal rod, and it'll stay there for a minute or so until it slows down, wobbles and falls off. So while that plate is going, he can spin up another plate. While those two are going, he has spare time to get more plates going.
Eventually, the performer has so many plates going that all his time is spent spinning them back up. Between these four PbP games I'm in and hanging out at HBO and Spacebattles and working, I was spending all my time keeping those plates going.
Then, over on HBO, Davidfuchs asks me what I think was wrong with Halo Wars. Talk about starting a snowslip with a snowball, right? And while I'm busy with that, someone let me take a hit of Borderlands without telling me how addictive it is. And then Grizzlei complained about how nobody speculates about Halo anymore, which prompted an analysis of why there's nothing in Halo that inspires speculation. And then she dragged out that holier-than-thou political correctness stuff, which demanded another, detailed response.
A wise entertainer knows to only work with as many plates as he can handle. A smart entertainer knows that if he bites off more than he can chew, he ought to grab the most expensive plates first. I am neither wise nor smart, and will stand there gawking as the plates spin out of control and smash upon the floor unless someone gives me a solid poke in the ribs.
Also, it feels so weird to be called "Ben" on the internet. It's been "Quirel" or "Rasq'" or "Rasq'uire'laskar" for so long.

I blame Google and their dumb Real Name policy. You don't show up in the Hangout as Rasq'uire'laskar, after all! :p
What was wrong with Halo Wars anyway? (I couldn't find the topic...)

I think I am about done with The Fiddleplayer’s Son. Why? Basically, I feel ignored by our GM. I love my character dearly and really enjoyed the characters everyone else created but… Updates have been slow, or inconsistent, to nearly nonexistent from the beginning. It’s been something like 19 days since our GM posted. Before that the gap was 15 days! Before that, nearly a week… and so on. Like with webcomics, I’m willing to wait long periods of time between updates if the artist or writer fills me in on why there is a delay and when I can expect the next update. We don’t hear anything from Chewie. Well, maybe all of y’all do but I don’t. :(
At some point it stops being worth my time to invest my character in a story that is not being maintained. And I think that time has come. I’m open to staying on if I had some reasoning to the delays and some assurance that the pace would get significantly better. At this point one post a week would be a massive improvement and a pace I could live with. I really would like to stay on, and part of me says “Why leave? People like your character, you like the story, what does the pace of updates matter?” But again, I really really don’t like the feeling that I’m being ignored or that something I’ve invested in isn’t worth the time to keep going.
So… That’s my thinking on things but I won’t commit to anything for a bit longer. At least not until I hear yous peoples thoughts on the matter. And maybe hear from Chewie too. Last time I spoke up about this in May he gave a two word response though, so… Well, I guess we’ll see… :(
If things cannot be resolved I’d like to strike my previous gameplay post and instead have Sparks decide the 200 gold is not worth descending further into a unknown dangerous cave and to simply part ways with the group. I also have my short story detailing most of what happened to Sparks to make her the way she is plus a “Director’s Commentary” post explaining even more stuff.
Honestly, I really want things to be resolved. The story is interesting, the characters are great, the writing is good, etc. But we are not moving forward and I don’t have a clue as to why or if we ever will again… And that’s unacceptable to me.
