Hello everyone and welcome to my recruitment thread for The Diva’s Requiem, a homebrew adventure set within the exotic mecca – Kaer Maga. Players are encouraged to have a reason for being in Kaer Maga, whether as a tourist or local.
Introduction
When the Diva Corrin Dalery is killed on the eve of her performance, the Oriat is left in chaos as she is the nascent victim of a strange series of murders occurring in Kaer Maga. Neighbors are quick to point fingers at who was responsible for the death of their beloved idol. Was it the Brothers of the Seal who included Corrin in their clandestine war? Was it a jealous bard who didn’t appreciate the Diva’s sudden rise to fame or was it the Ardoc Brotherhood, who is known for being masters of the arcane? Will the players solve this mystery before another life is claimed? The Diva's Reqiuem is a level 4 urban mystery adventure set within Kaer Maga.

Ooh, Kaer Maga. Very much interested, will draft up a character as soon as I get a chance. Thinking of a Duskwarden, or someone with ties to the group, at least.
That's a great idea, Helio! I've always wanted to see a player rock with the Duskwardens in the game and now I get the opportunity! If you do need suggestions for your build, I happen to have a copy of "City of Strangers" which may give you inspiration!

FratManCy! The man who gave me my introduction into the wild and woolly world of PbP, back in "Tears at Bitter Manor"! Awesome to see you on the boards again!
I don't have a character concept ready yet, but I have to dot in. I have the Kaer Maga player's companion book, so I'll take that out and blow the dust off it and see what I can come up with. I'm sort of in the mood for a heavy-hitting melee character for a change... maybe an Unchained Barbarian?
Question regarding the Unchained skills rule- does that mean Background Skills? Because I love me some background skills.

Great to see you Budd! I'm glad to see you're still around these boards kicking it. It makes me happy that I was able to give you a memorable experience.
In regards to your question - absolutely yes on background skills. Make use of them!

I'm very interested! I'll have to look up more about Kaer Maga, but I was thinking of playing a cleric or perhaps a shield paladin - A bastion of good type guy.
That's awesome, TheIronGiant6. Kaer Maga would need your type of help to solve this mystery! If you need help the following gods are worshiped here: Abadar, Asmodeus, Callistria, Cayden Caileen, Nethys, Pharasma, Sarenrae / Iomedae, Shelyn and even Urgathoa!

Thanks for the clarification, mate!
I'm going to ask one more question: If we decide to roll for stats, are we stuck with that set, can we get a do-over if they're super terrible, and/or can we opt in to the 20 Point-Buy?
My concept is coming together nicely, I think, but I want to see how his stats are going to pan out before I start building him for real. Definitely going with an Unchained Barbarian, but I haven't decided on a race yet. Kaer Maga seems like the right kind of town for stepping outside the box when it comes to races, but if I can't think of a clever one, I can always go with human. :)
Either way, my character is probably going to be a bit on the abrasive, sleazy side- though hopefully not so much as to be a detriment to the party!

My character is coming along well, I have almost finished building him using the 20 point-buy system. I'm going Sacred Shield paladin, and I'm not going to go Lawful Stupid, so no worries there. I forget how background skills work, but I'll start looking into them. Anyway, I never liked having my paladins follow a god or goddess, but instead follow a concept, like clerics. Would this be okay? Just wanted to make sure first before I start writing backstory!

Both are feasible options. I would recommend Point Buy if you're worried about how your stats are coming.

Unchained Skills
So basically, skills are broken into 2 lists - Adventuring Skills (stuff that your character has learned in their journey) and Background skills (stuff that your character is passionate about). From what I understand, aside from the skills you get normally for your class, you're also given +2 background skill points per level that must be spent on the background skills list. It represents what talents and stuff your character knows. This is kinda neat because it frees up your other points if you want to spend it on skills like perception and spell craft.

I've got my character built, with only 5 gold to spare! Would you like me to PM it to you or wait until you start accepting? As well, are you accepting drawbacks and major drawbacks? Paladins really struggle with feats, lol.
I'd say just post your character here ^_^!
As for drawbacks / major drawbacks, I don't really deal with those in my games. Sorry, man. T_T

No problem! I tried to make my profile but it all got deleted for no reason, so here is an HD picture of the pdf, let me know if there's a problem, or if I got something wrong!

Combat
Whoops, I forgot to mention this earlier! Combat doesn't translate well in a forum based game so I want to make this clear - combat will be theatrical. Only in certain circumstances will I put forth a map. Please keep this in mind when making your characters! ~_~
Deadline
I'd like to pick characters by February 6th and start the adventure.
Disclaimer
I apologize if you keep seeing my posts as Dmitri Prostrednik. That's my default alias for a game I'm currently in!
Other than that, I'm happy with the interest that this game has generated and I'm looking forward to seeing your concepts!

Harakani |

I'm very interested in an Ardoc. Is there any chance of playing one as a Promethean Alchemist?

Budd the C.H.U.D. |

Okay, definitely going with my gut here and sticking with the 20 Point-Buy. As much as I'd love to leave it all to chance, I can't shake the thought that I'd get hamstringed.
Is the Suli race available? I know they're a bit on the powerful side, but it might be a good match for my character concept and I'm trying not to go with Human here. Ifrit might work as well, although I'd probably want to switch in a couple of the alternate racial traits.

I don't see why not. I like the idea of someone from the Ardoc Brotherhood.
Dotting for interest,
would a Kitsune Mesmerist be acceptable?
While that would be a cool idea, I'm not a fan of psionics IMO.

You would be the first person in any of my games who has expressed interest in Sulis! I'd say - sure!

It's one of the new Occult classes, not psionics.
A Mesmeriser works with illusions and mind control.

Ah, I've been meaning to check out those new classes! ~_~.
Since I'm not familiar with the occult classes and how they work, I am restricting them from this game. Sorry pal. T_T

Agnis Zamir |

Here's (a highly unfinished draft of) Budd the C.H.U.D.'s Suli-jann Unchained Barbarian, Agnis Zamir!
"Not Agnes, Agnis! Can't you bums get anything right? Agnes is a girl's name. Agnis is the name of the bronze god standin' in front of you right now. Don't let me catch you makin' that mistake again, unless o'course your great ambition in life is to end up another stain on this street!"
...Backstory's still in progress (as is the stat block), but he's definitely going to be the boisterous, uncouth sort of fellow I've not had the chance to play before.

Zaliana Deslee |

Submitting Zaliana Deslee, varisian bard and spellsinger for consideration.
Backstory
Raised on the road, Zaliana was taught to sing and dance before she could walk or speak. Born with one of the rare varisian birth tattoos, resembling a tambourine adorned with a seven-pointed star, it was clear to her clan that she was destined to wield great power through music.
Taught the ancient art of spellsong by her grandmother Alinza, Zaliana traveled with her family's caravan until well into adulthood, honing her craft through practice and performance until it became clear that she had learned all she could.
Zaliana and her family accepted that the only way to fulfill the true potential of her magical songs was for her to leave and seek out inspiration from other virtuoso and master bards. So, with a mixed feelings of anticipation and sadness, she packed her belongings, including the kapenia bestowed to her by Alinza on the evening of her departure.
Now, Zaliana has arrived in Kaer Maga after months of travel, determined to learn all she can from the performers of the Oriat.
Appearance and personality will be added to her profile shortly.

Agnis Zamir |

You can't pick your parents. Agnis has lamented this fact his entire life; his mother was an uptight paladin from Lastwall, his father an eccentric arcane scholar from some far-off desert land or another. Theirs was a tale of high romance, or a comedy of errors, or somesuch- Agnis doesn't particularly care. They never really wronged him, so to speak, but he prefers not to think about them. At least, most of the time- there are moments where he is thankful to have inherited his mother's sword arm, and the janni blood that gives him his startling appearance and strength from his father's side comes in handy almost daily. They're probably still out there, somewhere. Agnis simply doesn't care to find out where.
He left home as early as he could, following the hundredth or so screaming match with the folks; his parents, despite the amount of hell he raised in his youth, tried their hardest to stop him. They couldn't. Agnis had absolutely no interest in a life of law and order and normalcy- and he set himself toward the one place he knew was as far from that as he could imagine... Kaer Maga.
Agnis is not a patient man, and he lacks discipline, so there was no place for him in any sort of real organization of fighting men... but in an anarchic city like Kaer Maga, there was always some kind of work to be found for a hard-bodied, hot-tempered young man who wasn't afraid to bust a few skulls. His bronze skin and fire-red hair would mark him as an outsider anywhere but here, and he loves that. He loves Kaer Maga. The strange crowds, the constantly-shifting social tides, the plentiful opportunity to turn his violent tendencies toward useful ends... This city is the perfect playground for him.
Of course, while he would no doubt like for everyone to believe that he is little more than a blunt instrument to be set loose on those who earn the ire of his various employers, Agnis is not truly so simple. His frequent visits to the Oriat have nurtured within him a love and appreciation for the arts, especially performance; he is seen among the crowds in the local theaters and art galleries there as much as he is the brutal dives and fighting pits of the less-civilized areas of town. His personal life is another thing he would prefer be kept secret, especially considering how hard he works to maintain his reputation as a "tough guy." He has a girlfriend, a human bard-in-training studying at the Lyceum, the one completely normal thing in his life. His best friends- yes, he does have more than one!- include a troll augur named Gorza he keeps running into while drunk (though Agnis does not speak Giant), and a young ratfolk card shark named Fingers who has swindled Agnis out of his money more than once.
Agnis himself is an odd cocktail of complexes and quirks and fetishes and phobias. He admits gladly to most of these things, unless he feels they betray any weakness in him- hence the many rumors that he is a regular customer of the local Payride houses, despite having never actually partaken in the use of any such escorts.
That's what I have so far. As a lover of the arts, he would be very interested in the fate of the Diva; perhaps he's even a big fan of hers.
Character building is still in progress. I've had a crazy busy few days, so hopefully I can finish putting the character sheet together as soon as possible.

2)picking alternate abilities to the SLAs off of the table without rolling for tieflings and aasimar?

@Olaf: Yes, you can change to point buy if your rolling isn't good. I don't allow advanced age categories and I'd prefer you didn't choose different SLA's.
Disclaimer: This game is story driven with less focus on combat. As a result, MinMax characters won't see much action for their builds. Combat will be handled as Theatre of Mind unless the situation demands a map*.
*: Honestly, anytime a map is placed in my games, the pacing comes to a grinding halt.
