"Do you have any orders, Chief Defender?"
Marikel looks about the area.
"I can take one of those longspears and try to stop the orcs lifting the portcullis. If they make it through, I'm happy to retreat last and slow their advance. But I may have difficulties dodging anything coming down the hill. I'm armoured, but not agile."

Male Dwarf

"Lesson one," the dwarf grunts. "We don't release the logs or the boulder if there's allies between us and the orcs. That's why there's two barricades, so we can keep falling back, keep the line together. One man alone will get torn to pieces if he's surrounded. That spear thing, that's good, though."

Eyeing the log trap with desire, "Oh yeah, I'm thinkin' I'll be usin' the rollin' logs on these stinkin' orcs. That's got me name written all over it."

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

"You men," Marikel calls to the dismissed troops. "Everyone gather round."
Another brief prayer to Iomedae and soothing energy flows into their wounds, healing and reinvigorating them.

"Acting Chief Defender here may still have need of you."
Marikel picks up a longspear.
"Someone may need those bows and arrows," he mutters, heading for a fallen enemy.

Female Human Rogue 4

Alicia shoves a handful of items into Marikel's arms. "I think the wand heals people. Not sure about anything else," she says.

Wand, two vials, a scroll case, and a globular stone that has an alchemical smell about it.

Having washed her hands of the matter, she starts dragging fallen half-orcs into the gateway, so that no one can charge over them.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

With a deep breath and gulp, Vhailor girds his loins and looks to place himself behind the foremost bastion. Carbonel narrows eyes and hisses quietly, but doesn't seek to dissuade his companion from his boldness. If queried he offers "Can't do much towards the back... best I keep close, but don't worry." jerking his head towards the cat "Carb'll keep me honest."

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Marikel looks quizzically at the items in his arms.
"I'm not a..."
He pauses, then turns to Vhailor.
"Mister... I mean, Vhailor. Could you perhaps assist in identifying these articles? Thank you."

He looks at the wand then across to the troops.
"Anybody still hurt?"

Afterwards, he addresses his companions.
"I can already heal people. Can someone else use this wand? Mister Dorn?"

Female Human Rogue 4

Alicia pauses long enough in her dragging of half-orc bodies to snatch the wand out of Marikel's hands. "I'm sure I can make it work."

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Pushing his lensless glasses up his nose Vhailor nods "I'll see what I can..." before getting lost in the thought and poke process...

"Acting Chief Defender here may still have need of you."

"Aye, now that's more like it," Omast grins. "Arm yourselves and get ready to defend the gates. It'll be mostly wounded and noncombatants heading up the hill if the palisade is breached; Patrol on the front line who are in fighting shape are under orders to join up with the Chief Defender's party if the gate falls. Our job is to let the wounded get to the Longhouse and keep the Twisted Nail right here. You hear me? Not a single damned orc gets past us!"

The eight Patrol members manage a respectable cheer at the dwarf's rallying speech; Kagak only looks nervous.

Alicia:
You have the time to move three half-orc corpses into position. Give me the coordinates you want to move them to.

Vhailor:
One vial and the stone are not magical; you suspect that they are alchemical in nature. As a matter of fact, you recognize the rock as a thunderstone. The most potent aura emanates from the second vial. There are nine faint auras inside the scroll case; you presume that these are individual scrolls and that you will be able to identify them with your magic-reading cantrip.

The wand gives off a faint aura of conjuration. While you are unable definitively to identify it, you see no reason to doubt Alicia's hunch that it is a wand of healing. The vial has a similar but slightly stronger aura; you identify it as a potion of cure moderate wounds.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

As he uncorks the scroll case for a closer look Vhailor confirms "Stone goes boom and the wand and this vial are for mending lacerations and partial eviscerations... not sure about this recptacle but it isnt arcane or majiked"

"I can use those, sir," one of the newly-healed Patrolmen volunteers. "Come on, Jed; get your bow and get up on that wall. You take one side; I'll take the other." The two patrolmen with bows and arrows enter opposite gatehouses and climb to the second story, where they can access the wall.

Male Dwarf

As Alicia drops a third macabre speedbump in the path and Vhailor opens Katrezra's scroll case, a horn sounds from the Lower Quarter.

"That's the signal!" Frum warns. "The gate's been breached! Those unable to fight hand-to-hand will be retreating this way, while the rest try to make their way to join the Chief Defender! Take your positions!"

Map

The three X's are dead half-orcs. Numbers 1 through 8 are your allies on the Patrol: 1 & 2 have been assigned by Omast to lower the gates after the townsfolk have retreated, 3 & 4 will close the barricades after the retreat, and 7 & 8 have bows and arrows atop the wall. I've relabeled Kagak with a K (he's in AD26). Let me know which square you want to start from and which weapons, if any, you have in hand. Is anyone taking the items Vhailor identified before the battle?

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

"Well, Kagak, how do you want to die? You chose not to die a villain before. Fight beside me and you'll die a hero. Fight well enough and you might even die of old age as well, if that's what you want. That's not an offer you'll get from the Twisted Nail."

Marikel takes a longspear and offers it to the half-orc.
"We're going to hold the gates as long as possible. Every retreating soldier will see you as they pass. If you want respect, now's your chance to earn it."

Assuming Kagak follows, Marikel keeps him nearby, grabs another longspear and makes his way to the gate. (AG14)

(Marikel has 4 channels, 2 potions of CLW and 2 Rabus' Pick-Me-Uppers. I will not be taking any of the items Vhailor identified. If someone wants one of my potions, let me know. I also have Oil of Magic Weapon and will keep it handy for when the time comes.)

Female Human Rogue 4

AB15 works for Ali's starting position. And she took the wand, since she has UMD. She'll take the CMW potion too, if no one else does.

The rogue loads her hand crossbow and waits in the shadow of one of the towers for the first orcish head to burst like an overripe melon.

Nope. Nothing for Dorn as far as the newly found items go.

Dorn straps on his shield and pulls out his maulaxe, readying to use the axe end to send the logs rolling. "I'm ready. Bring on the stinkin' orcs. They'll not be knowin' what hit 'em."

Equip shield and maulaxe

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Rolling his eyes at the timing, Vhailor stuffs the scroll case back amidst his belts and wrappings for later perusal. He then tucks himself into a corner out of sight but near harm... while Carbonel paces low and predatory nearby.

AI 15 for Vhailor - just inside the door, with Carbonel one square East of him.

Everyone has just taken up their chosen positions when the Patrolmen on the wall call down, "Here comes the retreat!" They hold arrows nocked on their strings, their eyes searching for orcs in pursuit to target.

A moment later, the retreating Trunauans come into the view of those with line of sight down the hill. Blissfully ignorant of the fighting that has already gone on in the Inner Quarter and the ambush that would have been laid for them if not for the intervention of the heroes, they run trustingly through the gate, most with minor wounds, a few carrying limping or non-ambulatory comrades.

Male Dwarf

"What happened?" Frum calls out to the first through the gate. "How did they get through the palisade?"

"Siege weapons!" the answer comes. "They kept pounding away with catapults until they'd made a hole! The others were standing in the breach to give us a chance to get the wounded up to the Longhouse!"

Male Dwarf

"Catapults!" Frum replies scornfully. "The Twisted Nail can't build a shelter tight enough to keep rain off their heads! Who's giving them catapults? Did you see the Chief Defender?"

"We could see a group of our own out there," a man replies, "moving from place to place, trying to smash the catapults. But they didn't get close enough for us to pick out the Chief Defender or the Patrol Captain."

A few of the Patrolmen standing with Omast Frum ask quick questions about particular acquaintances who had been on the front line as the wounded pass between them.

If you want to ask a quick question about anything that might be going on at the front, this is your chance.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Vhailor takes the opportunity to scan a couple of scrolls...

Female Human Rogue 4

"Smashing them, or manning them?" Ali mutters darkly.

"Did you recognize any of the group out there with the catapults?" the blonde asks more loudly.

Undistracted by the passing townsfolk from his position inside the gate tower, Vhailor takes the opportunity of the last few moments before battle to investigate the contents of Katrezra's scroll case. Having intoned the syllables and performed the gestures of his cantrip while peering through a crystal prism, he examines the first scroll he peels off of the roll. It is a necromantic spell to engender fear in the mind of the target, and, though his cantrip makes it intelligible to him, this rendition of the spell is divine rather than arcane in nature.

"Sorry, little lady," someone answers. "They were too far away for us to see who it might have been for sure."

"Catapults, hey?"
He glances across to Alicia.
"Well, if it was such a sure thing they wouldn't have needed traitors inside. I think they'll be getting their own surprise soon."

A few dozen townsfolk stream through the gate, headed uphill to safety.

Alicia:
Among the retreating warriors, you see Zechariah Landon. He is wet and filthy and is carrying one arm a little gingerly but seems relatively unscathed by his adventure.

Female Human Rogue 4

Alicia lets out a rather unladylike snort. "At least we know he's alive."

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Marikel looks across to Alicia and raises his eyebrows questioningly.

There is a shout from the Patrolmen atop the wall. "Orcs in sight! There are Trunauans fighting hand-to-hand with them, covering the retreat!" The one on the right looses an arrow somewhere on the downhill side of the wall and quickly nocks another one.

Vhailor:
Your cantrip still active, you take the chance to unroll another scroll from Katrezra's case. It is identical to the one you just deciphered.

a second divine scroll of cause fear

Male Dwarf

"Get ready to close the gates at my mark," Omast calls to the men standing at the mechanisms inside the towers, "and not a moment before! The lot of us can handle a few stinking orcs, but I'll not shut a neighbor out!"

hp 36 / 36; AC 19; Init +1 Male Human Cleric 4

Marikel grits his teeth and waits for a target.

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Vhailor stuffs the scroll case back away and cracks his knuckles.

The archers on the wall are firing rapidly now; a moment later, those with a view through the open gate see three harried Patrol members backing cautiously up the road, at least twice that number of orcs trying to move past or through them. The cover fire from the archers is slowing the advance of the orcs now, as they must divide their attention between the men in front of them and the arrows raining down from the wall. A backward glance by the retreating Trunauans reveals the open gate and Omast Frum and allies waiting to receive them; at a signal, when they are near enough the gate, the trio drop their offensive stances and withdraw toward safety, the Twisted Nail pounding howling after them.

"Now!" Frum shouts, as the exhausted Patrol members clear the second portcullis. The man in the left gatehouse releases the lock, and the outer portcullis crashes down into its closed position; however, when Alicia's jury-rigged locking mechanism is removed from the mechanism in the right gatehouse, the portcullis drops only a few inches, then jams crookedly still open, the saboteurs having been not entirely unsuccessful. Six orcs were on the uphill side of the first portcullis when it fell and have no barrier between them and the party in the Inner Quarter.

Marikel stabs his unweildy longspear at the Orcs as they throng forwards. He targets an orc behind the one beside him. Then, with a glance back at Kagak, he steps back looking for an attack of opportunity against any orcs trying to get past him.
"Stick close, Kagak. I'll try not to let any past."

(Attack orc O2 in AE13 with longspear, 5' step to AG15, AC is currently 16 with shield stowed on back. Can I get an AoO on O3 before my turn? I'm okay either way)

AoO on O3 if allowed:

AoO on 1st Orc trying to move through threatened area:
Longspear: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Damage (two handed): 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Sigh:

(Of course the first one shows a crit. And I see all the other rolls too. And I think if I put this after the 1st roll it steals the later rolls. Whatever. I'll dump this here and you can do whatever. Thanks :-)

Damage (two handed): 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Damage (two handed): 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Because of the curved wall of the tower, Twisted Nail 3 just barely had cover from you when he left square AF12 so there was no AoO.

Marikel stabs at the orc that just took Ali's bolt in its throat, but the tip of the longspear deflects off a metal stud in its leather armor. The priest steps back and prepares to attack the next orc that ventures within his extended reach.

One of the Patrol members rescued from the base of the tower runs up past Omast and throws a javelin at the front line of the Twisted Nail. The orc nearest Marikel takes the projectile straight in the chest but doesn't react beyond a grunt of pain.

Vhailor:
From your position inside the tower, you can't see anything of the battle, only the Patrol member who closed the portcullis. You presume that his counterpart in the other tower also closed the second portcullis, but you don't know how many of the Twisted Nail may have made it through before the gates dropped. You can't even see Carbonel, but you can feel the cat's anxiety. You can tell that the feline is in no immediate danger but that that danger is in sight and that the heavy scent of the orc horde is filling the small furry body with adrenaline.

Balladeer:
Feeling Carbonel's excitement rise, Vhailor tenses... but holds his position for the moment... biding his time.

An orc on the back line pushes past his compatriots and runs directly onto Marikel's ready longspear. The jab takes him directly in the throat and brings him up short, though he does not fall.

As the rearguard of the Trunauan retreat passes through, the Patrol member at the first barricade replaces the barrier behind them, as Frum instructed, and seizes a longspear with which to defend the line.

Although bleeding freely from the throat, the orc Alicia shot appears unaffected by the wound, charging ahead at the Patrolmen who threw the javelin at his fellow. His swinging falchion rings harmlessly off the guardsman's chainmail.

On their perches atop the walls, the two archers take shots down into the crowd of orcs in the Lower Quarter.

Another orc moves around the curve of the downhill tower and discovers Alicia with apparent delight. "Hier is 'n mooi een!" he crows, as he swings his falchion. "Ons sal haar bloei!" The young woman tries to duck out of the path of his savage blow, but the blade draws a bloody line down one arm.

Yet another orc rushes forward to attack the man who threw the javelin, but her falchion is also unable to make a chink in the Patrolman's chainmail.

Orcish:
Here's a pretty one! We'll make her bleed!

Carbonel is unthreatened, and no orc has a direct path to him. Any action for him, Mark? A ready? Or just a delay?

Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

A ready to run back to Vhailor if an orc comes at him

The cat's muscles tense in readiness to make a dash for the relative safety of the tower if necessary.

A Patrolman scrambles over the barricade and draws a two-handed sword, ready to slash the bindings holding back the pile of logs on the uphill side of the road. "Fall back this way!" he calls to Marikel and Kagak. "Draw them into the path of the logs!"

The last orc still standing between the portcullises rushes up behind Skyreaver and attempts to slash the roc out of the air, but his falchion fails to do more than dislodge a loose feather. Behind him, more orcs are visible, struggling to lift or break the outer portcullis.

Kagak is only too eager to do as the Patrolman suggested and fall back out of immediate danger. Clearing the path downhill of the log trap, he sets his longspear defensively.

The Patrolman at the second barricade sets the removed section back in place as the retreating Trunauans clear the final obstacle, then draws his own longspear. "Patrol Captain!" he calls up to Frum in a panic. "We're hitting them. Why won't they die?"

"They'll die all right," the dwarf assures him grimly. "They're dead on their feet now; they're just too stupid to know it. We've just got to stay on our feet until they realize it. Fall back to the barricades, you lot! No point in letting yourself get killed by a dead orc!" He raises his primed heavy crossbow but doesn't release the trigger, unwilling to waste his bolt if he doesn't have a clear shot.

Omast moves to AE22 & readies

Inside the righthand gatehouse, the Patrolman beats a gauntleted fist at the mechanism, trying to loosen the jammed portcullis.

His counterpart in the other gatehouse, his task completed, moves to the doorway. Seeing his compatriot ready to loose the log trap, he quickly drops back to help him, not wishing to be stuck in the gatehouse when the logs are released.
