Just because something is thematic, doesn't mean you ignore your charecter's limitations, or another charecter's ability to counter your ability.
However, for whatever reason, you threw him, and thus were out of the sphere. So, your actions are fine.

Only a few things in PF aren't vulnerable to sneak. Aeons, proteans have 50% ignore or something, and elementals.

Also, swarms, in a way.

(Though, with an arcane trickster, you can do that too.)
