'You better stay that hand, Bronze-Beak. Your boys and beasts may come for us, but not after we turn you into worm food.' Dugan stays at the ready.

"What do you know of the former overseer's defenses? You surely have heard something of them."

"Bronze-Beak? I like that," Bloodeye chortles as he moves his hand away from his weapons.

"Your towheaded friend is right, though," he gestures towards Micheo with his chin. "I'm one of the few people who's seen the second floor of Kreed's manor. I don't think he ever even allowed his brat up there. Makes sense, given how dangerous it would be to blunder about there.

"There's a slew of traps up there. I know 'cause I'm the one who put him in touch with the right people to construct them. 'Course, I don't know how they work. They were always devices of Kreed's own design. He took pride in designing his own security measures. I know that he had the door to his personal chambers rigged, along with the safe beneath his desk, and the secret safe he thought I didn't know about. Not sure what else he might've had rigged up."

Another disconcerting chuckle tumbles from his thin lips, musing about something he just remembered.

"I guess it'd be a right shame if I failed to warn you about his living defenses," Bloodeye jokes sardonically. "Kreed always bragged about how his papa taught him that breaking a man is no different than breaking a wild horse. Just like designing his own traps, Kreed also prided himself on the beasts he trained.

"There's a pair of mastiffs: Duke and Hatchet. They're big, ornery mutts. They seemed to like the boy, well enough, though. There's also his hunting falcon. Not sure if it'd obey anyone other than Kreed, though. You know, Barney upstairs - my bartender - he's been spreading rumors that Kreed's falcon's what took my nose. That's a right laugh. Anyhow, I'm not sure what other wretched beasts he might've had locked up, too."

”He can make it when we get out of here and to the soldiers.” Ulark said, his features returning to normal, a sign that he had wrestled control over himself. ”I would get these men out of here immediately.”

"His testimony might be enough for a warrant for the manor. We'd still be going in but that seems inevitable now and we can leave the boy out of it as much as possible."

"Kreed kept a rather limited inner circle," Bloodeye replies. "Besides me, there was Pay Day and that slip of a barrister. Old Vade used to be included, too, 'fore he and Kreed had their...falling out.

"There was that cleaning girl, too," he adds, stroking his sharp chin. "I was always a bit suspicious of her. She'd come up from Olfden two or three times a year to tidy up both Kreed's manor and the 'official' offices, usually ahead of an inspection.

"She certainly had...I guess I'd call it a fragile hint of masked elegance," Bloodeye muses with a wolfish smile cutting across his face. "I was sure she'd be quite popular. I tried to recruit her myself but was always rebuffed. Even Kreed opposed the idea. I guess he worried I'd pry too many of his secrets from her."

"What was her name, if you recall it?"

Bloodeye scratches his scalp, searching for the answer. Then, with a newly creeping smile, he remembers.

"Ah, yes. Her name was Jillia. Can't say that she has the same...charm as my Miss Ralla, but she's pleasant enough to look at. I know a lot of my customers would enjoy her simple beauty."

Ulark listened impatiently. He walked over to the tortured lumberjacks, and saw to their wounds.

He truly did not feel comfortable waiting around in the villain’s torture-dungeon.

"Thank you, friend," Milon breathes with relief at Ulark's healing touch. The other man, whom Ulark does not recognize as one of the regular loggers, also nods his head, his throat too parched to voice his thanks.

"Hah! She never got to 'reside' in the manor," Bloodeye laughs. "Even when she came to town to do the Gavel's cleanin', I think he made her sleep outside. Best I remember, she lives down in Olfden. Of course, she might've been here in town already to do the cleanin' when you went and cleaned old Kreed himself."

The half-orc strokes his chin, likely giving more thought to how to milk this information than whether he actually remembers it.

"I'm feeling a mite parched," he says. "Walk with me upstairs as I get a drink from Barney, and I'll tell you where that Jillia girl likes to hang around when she's in town."

"Let us leave this place."

Bloodeye leads the way back down the earthen hallway, evidently unafraid to turn his back to you. Then again, as you pass the side passage, a trio of his henchmen join the procession. Their knives are not drawn, but they keep an eye on you as you keep an eye on their master.

"Grab Ralla! Tell her to be on stage in ten minutes!" Bloodeye bellows as he rounds the corner and strides into his gambling hall. He marches to the bar, letting patrons and employees alike frantically part aside lest they risk his wrath by brushing against him. As one of his flunkies runs off to fetch the girl he called for, another slides a chair with actual upholstery into place just in time for Bloodeye to park himself at the bar counter.

"Oldlaw," he demands, staring the bartender dead in the eye. "Oh, and Barney?" he adds, stopping the bartender in his tracks. Bloodeye seizes the man by the ear and slams his face into the counter. "I've told you. No one goes downstairs without my permission. Now get me that Oldlaw."

As Barney scurries away, one hand staunching the flow of blood from his nose while the other retrieves a bottle from a cupboard, Bloodeye turns in his chair to face you. The deadly serious expression upon his face again brightens with a knife-sharp grin.

"Now, as for that girl, Jillia. Your best bet is over at Crimmy's place. That overfed ginger oaf has a soft spot for the girl. He lets her sleep by the fire from time to time. If she's not there already, Crimmy can take you to her."

"Lead. On.", says Micheo, anger visibly increasing at the blatant cruelty of the man.

A confused scowl crosses Bloodeye's face.

"I told you where to find the cleaning girl. When did I say I would take you there? I have a business to run."

He snatches the bottle of whiskey and wooden tumbler from the injured, terrified Barney. He pours a shot for himself before he continues talking.

"Now, if you want to send those soldiers over to question me, that'll be just fine. If I'm lucky, they'll have some coin to spend while I'm giving my statement to their commander," he says with a wink and sharp smile, hoisting up his drink to you before downing the shot.

Ulark looked to Micheo for guidance. The man was obviously evil, but murdering him was wrong too. Luckily, there was an actual Paladin he could look to at times like this.

Dugan gestures for a drink of his own. As Barney shakily pours his whiskey, Dugan leans in 'Sorry about all this.'

'I'll at least have my drink first' He says to the metal-nosed villain and knocks back his own shot.

"We found you torturing people in the basement. We're not going to leave such an upstanding member of the community like you unsupervised... you just hit Barney unprovoked. I for one am fearful you may torture him. As Micheo said, come with us or we will drag you to the commander."

The half-orc squints warily at Dugan, helping himself to the Oldlaw, before slowly turning his eyes to the rest of the party, taking a moment to appraise each of you. A wry, confident grin peeks out upon his pale, gray flesh.

"You know, I always used to tell Kreed that he and I were like two falcons in an aerie. I did that because I knew it both irritated him and surprised him, since he never expected me to know a word like 'aerie.' In truth, keeping my position and power requires just as much cunning as Kreed used to keep his."

Bloodeye pours another shot of Oldlaw for himself, pauses a moment, then signals Barney to pour another for Dugan. The proprietor picks up his cup but does not drink it yet. Instead, he continues talking as long as he's able.

"I feel like I'm eulogizing the son of a b*&@&," he says, idly examining the wood grain of his cup. "Kreed prided himself on two things. One was raising his boy, same way as his daddy raised him. The other was never leaving himself vulnerable. He made sure that there wasn't a body alive in town that didn't either respect or fear him. In most cases, it were both. He kept dirt on everyone, set up 'contingencies' as he called them. All sorts of measures to keep anyone from toppling him from his place as king of the town.

"'Course, he never imagined that he'd take an axe in broad daylight from some...logger," Bloodeye corrects himself before he can say anything to Ulark that he will regret. He downs his second shot before continuing.

"I'm fixing to learn from his mistake," he declares, slapping his palms on the countertop. The sharp sound makes Barney wince. "If it came to a fight, every man in the place would draw steel for me. They know that if they didn't, I'd kill them myself. Maybe we'd win, maybe we wouldn't. I'm not looking to find out."

He stands and gestures for his men, henchmen and customers alike, to stand down.

"So, where we going?"

'No point in letting good drink go to waste.' Dugan says with a genuine smile, raising his own cup and nodding to Bloodeye's.

He slugs his own back with relish, whether the half-orc joins him or not. 'It was a long, dry road getting here and I imagine we have a ways to go, yet.' he says with a sigh.

"Kreed also couldn't keep absolute power though, as the farmers broke free of Kreed's control and formed the Farmer's Alliance, much to his disliking.
I think that moment might of been an omen for him."

"To the Commander.", Micheo echoes.

"Very well, my friends," Bloodeye declares, rising from his seat. "Lead on!"

During this entire conversation, you and Bloodeye have been the center of attention for everyone in the Rouge Lady. Not a single dice throw or spin of the saw has been made, lest the patrons miss the most epic of fights erupt. Before leaving, Bloodeye turns to them all and offers a gesture, raising his fist and swirling a thick finger in the air - as if to say, "back to work everyone."

.....

Bloodeye remains reticent during the march from the dockside up to the Perch. Nevertheless, his eyes remain constantly alert, not just watching your hands, lest you decide to betray him, but scanning every alley looking for anything amiss.

Returning to the Consortium Offices, where the Diamond Regiment detachment is currently bivouacked, the sentries are quite surprised and on edge when they see the new company you keep. They remain disciplined, however, and without stammering or resorting to coarse words they ask what new business you bring.

"Got the Commander a nice witness, the king of this town's underworld.
He likely knows everything in this town as well as Gribbet knows everything in Korvosa.
He is willing to testify and give some info to the commander."

The sentries exchange a glance before one of them hustles inside the offices. She soon returns, escorting Commander Odeber. Another pair of soldiers keeps pace behind her.

Whatever her reaction to Kabran Bloodeye, the commander disguises it well as she casts an appraising eye upon him. She remains the picture of discipline, not a trace of revulsion or anger to be gleaned from her face.

"Mr. Bloodeye," she begins with an even tone, "You'll be happy to know that stories of you have reached all the way to Adamas. Thus, perhaps the only praise I can offer you is recognition that you are no 'small time' operator."

The commander's backhanded compliment elicits a grin from the half-orc kingpin. He pantomimes an exaggerated bow, as though meeting with royalty.

"Thank you for convincing Mr. Bloodeye to speak with us," the commander says, turning to the party. "We will escort him inside for what I'm sure will be a polite, productive conversation."

"You are welcome."

He turns to the others.

"Need we try for the manor still?"

"If Bloodeye never emerges from that building again, I won't lose any sleep," Milon sighs, stooping down to sit upon a broad, flat rock before the gate of the Consortium offices.

"Pay Day must be at his wit's end, too. Or the end of what little wits he's got. Not only have folks around the mill and cutyard been mouthing off more with Kreed gone, but lads haven't even been showing up for work. I can't blame them. None of the loggers have been paid a copper since Kreed's death."

'Who's been running the lumber camps?'

"Each camp has a foreman that answers to the cutyard boss, and he would normally answer to Kreed, but now he's answering to Pay Day," Milon responds. "At least that's the way it's supposed to work now, best anyone can figure.

"Each week, Kreed would send Pay Day and his boys to deliver the payroll to the cutyard, and the foreman would distribute it to the loggers. Word is, though, that no one can find where Kreed was keeping the money, so no one's getting paid. Some of the foremen are trying to play tough, threatening anyone who doesn't work with a drubbing. Some of the other camps are just falling apart since their foremen can't keep order."

"I agree with Dugan's idea"

Milon turns his head to cast a sidelong glance at Kreed Manor, looming on the western edge of the Perch. He purses his lips and shakes his head.

"I don't envy you," he says grimly. "I'd rather spend a night in the Woods than inside that house. Around the cutyard, the boys had just as many stories about the wicked things going on in Kreed's house as they did about Bloodeye's cellar and Vade's tower."

The woodsman rolls up the threadbare cuff of his pants and idly examines a red welt upon his ankle, presumably a memento of his time in Bloodeye's "care." He rubs the site, winces, then continues speaking.

"Who're you going to see about one of them warrants? The sheriff or those soldiers? Not sure who's got the more authority in town these days."

"Have you brought me another crimelord to question?" Commander Odeber asks, maintaining her patience and composure as your summons draws her from the offices again. She listens to your latest report, and she registers only mild surprise at news of the unpaid workers.

"The Consortium's lowest workers suffered even when the company operated efficiently," she muses. "It is little wonder that they bear the brunt of its current dysfunction.

"However, as you are civilians, I cannot officially empower you to investigate Kreed's home. Mr. Bloodeye was a different matter, as he is simply a private citizen who was convinced to...do his civic duty, shall we say."

The commander tilts her head back slightly, mulling an idea.

"Enough authority is vested in me to grant one among you a field commission as a low-ranking officer, thus making you a part of the Diamond Company and an official part of our investigation. You would have to adhere to certain protocols, but it would grant more legitimacy to your actions."
