Strange Aeons, with GM Pendrak

Game Master karlprosek

To shake off the maddening and wearying limitations of time and space and natural law—to be linked with the vast outside—to come close to the nighted and abysmal secrets of the infinite and the ultimate—surely such a thing was worth the risk of one’s life, soul, and sanity! -- H.P. Lovecraft, The Whisperer in Darkness (1931)

Thank you, GM Pendrak, for starting this campaign.

"There's a dead man shoved under the rubble in there." John says, pointing to the door for the guards to take a look.

"Bodies laying about, going ripe, are sure to attract the corpse eaters."

Broom was surprised by the sudden hug. It certainly was not the response she was expecting, though it was not unwelcome.

The news about the old cook was disturbing however.

"We have to get going, but if We find any more food We will let you know." she said.

Returning to the rest of the group she related what she had learned. "It sounds like the ghost is the old cook who was killed by someone named Aggara and her followers. We might be able to avoid disturbing him if we avoid his pot. Maybe we can just run across the room to the other door?"

Reine had basically stood in awe as John started digging through rubble right under the guards' noses and Broom struck up a conversation with one of the cooks. She managed (barely) to keep her jaw from falling open as both situations continued.

Well, at least no one was actively trying to kill them at the moment. She'd been about to go over to investigate John's body, when Broom ended her conversation and came to catch Reine and Des up on the results thereof.

"You learned a lot. Good job. If we have to, and can avoid the pot, then you're right, and that's probably our best bet," Reine said with a nod. "But let's see what comes of John's discovery, first." With a supportive pat on Broom's shoulder, Reine left the two shorter women together and approached John and the guard.

One of the guards went over with John to check on the body while the other stayed by the barricaded doors. When he saw the corpse, the guard grunted. "That's the old head cook." He glanced in the direction of the haunted pot, visible just a few dozen feet away. "I'd be angry, too, if I was buried under a pile of rubble right where I got murdered."

If Reine had been astonished by the turn of events, Desdemona was absolutely flabbergasted.

Once the guard had left again, she eyed the dead cook consideringly. "If we examine the body, we may discover how to stop the poor ghost from doing anything violent to us - we may be able to free it to its final rest," she said, hopeful.

Putting thought to action, she went through the cook's pockets and pouches, looking for... anything, really, though chances were he'd been stripped of anything significant before they buried him.

She just really didn't want to go out into the yellow fog.

She hardly even shuddered when her shadow fell over the body.

John seems to fade out for a few seconds as he stares at the body of the beaten, dead cook.

As he stares he swears he sees the face of another man, similarly beaten in place of the cook's.

He shakes himself and says outloud, as if talking to himself "No, it couldn't have been us that killed this man, we just got here."

"Besides, the man I think remember looked different."

He shakes his head, as if trying to wake up, and then seems to refocus on the collection of people.

Reine just shook her head.

"Well, if nothing else, maybe we can at least bury him. As someone said, keeping a body here just attracts... pests."

"We can put the rocks back if you want. Maybe organize the rubble a little to make a nicer mound? We don't think that going outside is a good idea, unless..."

Broom pondered the thought for a moment and then whispered "You wanted to feed the ghouls so maybe they would go away for a while?"

John says to Broom:

"I don't think that's way it works, they never stop being hungry."

To everyone:

"It couldn't hurt to try and bury him a little more decently."

As the group made an effort to bury the dead cook with a little more decency, the angrily bubbling pot- which had at some point righted itself over the cold hearth- slowly calmed down. While it took some time to make a proper cairn and say a few prayers for the dead man's soul, by the time the group was done it seemed that the chef's spirit had been appeased.

All that was needed now was to test it.

He looks at Reine and continues: "You might have been on to something with that suggestion to bury him."

But We don't really know if that is true. But We do know that It is probably not a ghost. Reine shook her head. She hadn't had any particular insight or expectations when she'd suggested burying the cook's body, it had just seemed like a reasonable thing to do.

And it minimized the body-eating-creatures-attraction factor.

Once Broom had verified that the haunt had been put to rest, and John went to check the door, Reine gestured to Desdemona and set out to follow the group.

"Well done, Broom," Desdemona called, taking one last look around the dead cook's kitchen, her gaze skating over her shadow. She hoped that the yellow-bands wouldn't follow them, but then, they didn't seem too involved with scouting.

She followed Reine, already wondering what she could do to mimic Broom's success with the unseen creature that served her. Haunted? Ha. There were other forces at play.

Standing beside the door as John pushed through it, Reine let her surprise and surge of fear at the appearance of the creature flow through her, and channeled it into her anger. Anger which she directed at the creature. She had no idea what the creature was, other than a threat - an enemy. And that was enough.

She glared at the beast, all of her fury coalescing in her gaze and roiling forth in a wave that promised utter destruction.

Because it's an enemy, it's subject to her Aura of Fear (–4 penalty on saving throws against fear effects. Creatures that are normally immune to fear lose that immunity while within 10 feet of Reine). Assuming that she can't do a melee attack past John and the hard corner of the door, she'll Intimidate the thing. If John were to move out of the door for some reason, she'll instead use a Swift Action to engage Lingering Touch, 5' to the doorway, and then Standard to attack the thing with her Devastating Touch/Terrified Escape Terror.

Desdemona's shadow melted away from the form of a woman as it surged forward, becoming something serpentine - yet disturbingly different. She had intended on getting closer to try and shock the lizard, but now there were so many people in the door. Even tossing a glob of acid would be difficult without endangering anyone. What could she do?

After a frustrating second of inaction she saw that John was also blocked from the creature. One of those strange, alien memories entered her mind. She began weaving the new spell. It was a complicated one, far longer than any she had cast before. She wasn't completely sure what it was going to do, but she did know it would help solve the problem.

5' Step West to get into Melee. Swift Action to trigger her Terror again (she's a little pissed to have wasted the last one). Standard to attack with DT/TE. Woot! Max (non-crit) Damage!. The Voonith will need to make a DC15 Will save (with a -4 penalty) or flee on its next turn. It will also take auto-damage 1d6+7 on Reine's next turn.

Will save, DC 15: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 2 - 4 = 13

Reine brushed the creature's colorful neck and channeled intense pain into it. The beast recoiled, backing up a few steps before turning to run through the collapsed wall and out into the mist.

Shadow and Des are up.

V flees straight N, Reine and Shadow both get an AoO if they want it.

<"The shadows come for you!"> Desdemona shouted in Aklo, unaware that she had slipped into that tongue. And while it seemed an idle promise at first - her shadow did reach out to crush the thing's legs in its phantom grasp.

Surprised, Desdemona hesitated. She should go to see if John and Reine were all right. And the shadow had obeyed her! ...Hadn't it?

She forced herself to take a step, then another, toward the dreaded dark that belonged to her... and, she had to admit, the awe-inspiring specter of Reine in her full fury.

For some reason, that didn't frighten her as it should.

Reine's swipe at the thing as it fled was half-hearted. More to encourage it to keep going than anything else.

"It might come back," She warned the others, "Let's move quickly."

The room beyond the door was full of yellow mist, the northern wall completely collapsed and open to the outside air. Debris choked the way west, so the only path forward was through a door to the south. Paint chips the color of eggshells covered the floor of the hallway. Many of the walls were cracked and sagging, causing their doors to lean awkwardly in broken frames.

DC 18 Perception:
As you turn the corner, you notice the wall to the south looks particularly unstable, like all it would take is a push to topple it over.

I don't think I have a marching order. Is it John-Reine-Des-Broom?

With the lizard gone, Broom approached the door to see what was on the other side. As she did, she casually plucked the floating dagger from the air and handed it back to John.

Peering through the door she was dismayed at what she saw. "Do we really need to go through the mist? Maybe there is another way?"

She eyed the malevolent vapours with suspicion as they swirled and undulated menacingly in the air ahead.

I take it the shadow attack didn't hit? Des would be happy to walk with Broom in the back. :)

Desdemona halted in the doorway, appalled. This was what she had wanted to avoid, in reality - well, in what passed for reality. That hideous nightmare mist, and the horrors it held.

She glanced at John, grown comically large, as he tried to maneuver through the door. Why not, after all? What matter was size in a world of dreams?

"Are we... are we going that way?" she half-whispered, not wanting to alert anything like, say, another voonith. Strange, how it had seemed to understand her... she shuddered, and again as her shadow slipped back to its proper place, attached to her feet.

"You're big enough," Reine answered John, though she didn't see anything particularly unstable about the wall herself. At least, no more unstable than any of the others. "Maybe see if you can push it down the other direction, so it doesn't fall on us?"

I think that's probably the right order, yeah.

"We can't go out in the mist, west is blocked so I think we have to work our way south and find a way back around to the tower." John says.

He looks down the hallway.

"Follow me then...."

John will proceed slowly towards the unstable south wall, squeezing his oversized body down the hall.

Let me know if I'm misinterpreting where we are on the map.

John is looking for danger as he proceeds.

John stiffens a bit when he hears the sound of someone hiding on the other side of the wall.

"Trying to surprise us huh..... I've got something for you." he thinks to himslef.

"Good idea Reine...." he says conversationally.

Then he shouts "Follow me!" and hurls himself down the hallway to slam his enlarged form into the wall and try to shove it over on whoever is on the other side.

"Raaaa!!!!" he shouts, throwing his weight into it.

Broom looked at Reine with concern "The building is already in bad shape, why would you want to make it worse by pushing over a wall?"

She turned with alarm as John suddenly agreed with the idea. "No, wait!" she called out, but it was too late. John had already thrown his bulk against the wall.

You might get a size bonus for breaking things/bursting portals in addition to the +1 bonus you are getting from your strength increase.
