The song and chant from Oghren and Aukan, further aided by Dalron's beat draws the orcs' attention and they break into a run, whooping as they sprint forth!
The moments that come next are tense, as you see the savages cover the distance in amazing time. Only Aukan has faced orcs in the open field, and expects this.
Sliver holds his draw and lets loose just as they come within his shorter range! The arrow buries itself in the front orc's chest, causing it to falter slightly, but it pulls itself together and continues! Orc 1 -11 hp
A few seconds later, May estimates that they are within range, weaves the arcane forces that she manipulates so well, and send three silvery bolts zipping across the field slamming into the chest of the front orc and its feet suddenly catch on themselves causing the creature to tumble to the ground where it lay still... dead, perhaps?
1d20 ⇒ 2 Oh, so close, May!
The air around Mayberry shimmers and warps, but it fades...
At the end of this round, the orcs are 60 feet away, so I will start the next round with Snow, May, and Sliver! Sliver and May have revealed themselves, so only Snow is still hidden.
Initiative order:
Snow & May -> Sliver -> Orcs -> Oghren -> Eeerie -> Aukan -> Dalron

The lead orc didn't fall after that shot!? This worries Sliver. He wants to keep the distance open, so he backpedals as he fires.

After May's barrage, it fell, but your lethal shot failed to drop it. There are two orcs left.
Sliver's arrow pierces the lead remaining orc, catching it in the stomach, but it continues! Orc 2 -13 hp

Very cool about using a Lakota dictionary. I have a degree in linguistics so yay!
Also thanks for rolling the wild magic. Forgot obviously!

Mayberry's firebolt flies wide and over the head of one of the orcs who cover the almost 60 feet in a few scant seconds!
I will allow Oghren, Aukan, Eeerie, and Dalron to take readied actions, before I have the orcs go.

Combat over! I am off-island for work. I will resume on Friday. In the meantime you can discuss plans.

Snow stays hidden and continues moving forward to see if any other enemies may have been more subtle and stealthful. When she is satisfied that there are no other scouts she returns to the group.

"We should not press our luck. If they're anything like goblins, the orc band outnumbers us by 6 or 8 times would be my guess. Taking out a scouting party is one thing. I don't want to take on numbers like those in the open. The walls of the town will go far in evening the odds. With discipline and preparation, we can win the day." Sliver is for returning to the village.
| Dalron Cleric of Ilmater |
"We need to hide the bodies, so it looks like they just vanished. Maybe we can make something like claw marks in the ground so it looks like a dragon got them?"
Holding up a broken tree branch.
| Sliver. |
Sliver looks around. "I'm not sure we have the time. Those drums sound close." He removes his arrows from the corpses. Hopefully some are still useful.
| Aukan Knows-No-Fear |
Even Aukan doesn't look thrilled to face 6 or 8 times their number...there's glory, and then there's stupidity.
Eh, friends. The Walls, they sound best.
also, metagaming here but Aukan is out of rage, and rage is what makes Aukan good at fighting....

"I've had no luck with the scouting. Always seem to find every twig on the ground. Don't think we could make it to the caves to check on the town folk before the orcs show up, Sliver?"
Aeshuura
|
I think the most likely would be Sliver but he declined, so Snow, you still want to attempt a scouting and if so, how close are you going to try to get?
You think you may have 10 minutes or so, based on how fast those orcs were moving and the sound of the drums.
What's the plan?
Aeshuura
|
The guards tell you that they have a few crossbows at the keep, but other than that no ranged options.
| Snow in the Valley |
Snow will go alone to scout. Just need to get close enough to lay eyes on them. When she figures out how many enemies we’re dealing with, she will use her speed burst to get back ASAP.
Aeshuura
|
Okay, noted.
There as they move, a few of them drop from their wounds as they move away from the Ardeep Wood that you had passed on your way to the town of Nightstone. After the wounded are weeded out, you count maybe a score (20) of them, including the wounded Orc chief.
At this distance, it is difficult to get a read, but you think that they may be coming off a defeat and are looking for a fight or plunder...
Enough, or do you push your luck a little to find out a little more?
| Sliver. |
Sliver will stay at the drawbridge to raise it as soon as Snow returns.
Do we have enough people and ranged weapons to man each of the towers? Even if its just one person per tower and those people aren't skilled with them?
Do we have any horns or can we make flags to help with communication? Just so warn one another of any fancy maneuvers the horde might try.
Sliver's plan is to man each tower and pepper them with ranged fire. They'll probably start at the bridge but try to surround us or try other avenues of entry after that. As long as we can fire ranged attacks we have a chance of thinning their ranks enough to discourage them.
| Snow in the Valley |
Tempting, very tempting, but I think I’ll take my +3 Stealth and head back.
Though the sight of the war band make her curious about thier story, she is not willing to risk getting any closer. This band of orcs are certainly not ready for a seige and would not let against the walls of Nightstone. She turns and makes haste back to the palisade town to inform the others on what she has discovered.
| Oghren Battlehammer |
"What about hiding in the towers and just hope they pass by when they see no signs of life to kill? They'll see the town is pretty destroyed to begin with."
Aeshuura
|
@Sliver, general tower complement is two people. You have 7 party members and four guards. If you trust Kella to help, then you have enough to populate 6 towers. When Snow returns, she can tell you that the warband is coming up from the SW and so you only have 3 towers on the Western side, the SW tower being destroyed, and the third tower is on the Northern of the town.
You could station people on the Western side, but you think that you could be splitting your forces kind of thin.
The guards have a horn in each tower, six in total, since the horn in the SW tower is likely not salvageable.
What is the general plan and where are you after about 10 minutes?
| Sliver. |
Sliver suggests putting one guard in the northern tower to guard against an unlikely sneak attack. The other towers each get one guard and at least two party members. Kella can participate, but she'll be in a tower with at least two others.
Even if its not your strong suit, Sliver will offer a crossbow to anyone who needs one. Thinning out the enemy before we engage in melee is just smart.
Sliver will be in the tower he feels most likely to be hardest hit.

Approximately 8 more minutes or so. They were slowed slightly because of a little infighting, which you were able to see, before the chief rallied them.
At MOST, you will be able to fit 3 in a tower, and that would be cramped. Only two will be able to shoot out of the window, alternating because of mobility (the third, guards probably, could be reloading crossbows).
You have seen that Kella is a pretty good shot, if you feel like you can trust her enough...
