This was desperate indeed. We weren't fighting with nearly the aplomb of our usual mettle, likely because of the cramped and unfamiliar environs. I had eliminated one, but I needed to do better.

Finally, fate seems to swing to my side, as my rapier finds tenuous purchase in my foe's slippery hide.

Despite the way the water pulls at his cutlass, Eleuterio manages to cut through the belly of one of the grindylows, sending it drifting down into the dark seaweed. Artevious and Evril find they have no such difficulties as their rapiers stab out, Artevious running his blade straight through the skull of a second victim and Evril catching a third on its shoulder.

Five still up, three of which are wounded. Artevious has no attackers, nor does Chum; Eleuterio has two, one badly wounded and one unharmed, Owlbear has one unwounded, Conchobhar has one badly wounded and Evril has one moderately wounded.

Although the tide of battle might be shifting, the grindylows show no signs of realizing it, continuing their frenzied assault.

Attack #1 on Eleuterio: spear 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5; bite 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (12) - 2 = 10, damage 1d3 ⇒ 2
Attack #3 on Eleuterio: spear 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4; bite 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (11) - 2 = 9, damage 1d3 ⇒ 2

Attack on Conchobhar: spear 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4; bite 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (7) - 2 = 5, damage 1d3 ⇒ 3

Crit confirm on Owlbear: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18, crit damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Eleuterio takes 9 damage, Owlbear takes 16 damage, while Evril and Conchobhar take none.

The wounds taken by the paladin and simple-minded warrior overcome them, and they sink down into the deeps.

I believe Eleuterio is at -4, while Owlbear is at -12; both are drowning. You guys.

They are essentially equidistant - I am going to assume Chum goes after the PC, especially as Leu's survival odds are much, much greater than Owlbear's right now.

Chum's lightning fries another sea-goblin, while Artevious' merciless rapier continues its winnowing of the grindylows.

Conchobhar's Swim check: 1d20 ⇒ 18

No longer threatened by spear or tooth, Conchobhar chants a quick incantation and his hand begins to glitter with a healing light. Taking a deep breath, he dives beneath the water and touches Eleuterio, just as Chum begins dragging the paladin toward the surface.

If it matters, Leu has had a CLW applied. I am out - burned them all to start our day. If Evril stays with his action (I think he's already aware of Leu's prior healing), Chum will let go of the paladin and retrieve the dying Owlbear and attempt to staunch his wounds. If the movement is allowed, he will try to retreat from the melee as much as possible.

Leu is still at -1 before Evril's action, which I think is why Evril chose to heal him. As for staunching Owlbear's wounds, I'm not sure you can do so underwater - but I would direct you to the stabilize cantrip and its 30 ft range. Either way, though, it has to wait until after the grindylow goes again; before that happens, though, Leu can take an action now that he's conscious again.

I just realized I should have made a separate Constitution check for Owlbear to avoid starting to drown. (Eleuterio needs to make one, but only to determine whether he is now at 4hp or 5hp.) Anti-drowning check for Owlbear #1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16. Okay, he hasn't started officially drowning yet.

Male Half-elf Storm Druid 3; 21/24 hp

Sorry, I forgot I have that orison readied or I would have used it earlier. Yes, on my action, I would cast stabilize on the big lug and move him away from the fight, if possible.

Breaking the surface, his first realization is that the group had finally begun to turn the tide against the grindylow. His second realization is that he's lost his sword somewhere below him. His third, however, is more pressing - the man-mountain Owlbear was unconscious and underwater. "We need to get out of here, Captain! Quickly, before they can swarm us and overwhelm us!" He dives under the water again, swimming towards the massive man to bring him above water.

Swim: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Eleuterio pulls Owlbear back above the water - water dribbles from his mouth and nothing seems to indicate in this chaotic setting whether the brave simpleton yet lives.

The last grindylow defender, either too stupid or too spiteful to realize the desperate nature of its situation, bites at Conchbhar and stabs at Artevious, its fury driving its attacks and churning the water around it.

OK, I thought Chum had used his action this round to pull Owlbear up from the depths and move away from the fight. Since that's apparently not the case, he will swim back toward the fight and try to use a well-placed splash at the creature to distract it so Artevious can strike. He will stay back out of the creature's reach, making this a ranged attack, I think.

Actually, that's my bad, Chum - you did say that. What say we retcon this and I use my action to assist you in getting Owlbear back out of the cavern?

That was how I was picturing things anyway - Chum used his standard action to stabilize then his move to go get Owlbear, while Leu was doing basically the same thing but without needing to cast the spell first, and was therefore able to haul Owlbear back to the surface with Chum's assistance.

Male Half-elf Storm Druid 3; 21/24 hp

Fair enough. Chum continues with his original action and Eleuterio's assistance.

Chum and Eleuterio drag the senseless Owlbear back to the surface, and both are intensely relieved to see the gravely injured man's chest still rising and falling, however faintly. Meanwhile, Artevious and Conchobhar continue their struggle against the last remaining grindylow.

I was quite relieved that Owlbear still lived, wounded as he was. I looked about at my crew, and saw the desperation in their eyes, likely matching my own. This had been a hard-fought battle, and the grindylows had wounded us grievously. As much as I wished to press on, and reach our lost comrades, it would do little good to them if we got overwhelmed by the next batch of grindys we encountered. I could scarcely hope that what we had encountered was the lot of them.

Thus, with a heavy heart, I spoke. We can't keep going, wounded as we are. Let's look about for anything that the gridylows might have that's useful, then we should head back topside. Perhaps the small stockade would be safe to rest and heal up, if we can keep the bloody insects off of us. Chum, Mr. Cooper, and Mr. Shortstone: you have the healing magics with you. How soon will those gifts return?

My mind whirled. We've slain no fewer than eight. If these beasties truly keep their prey alive until they're ready to feast, we've cut their hungry mouths by a considerable margin, hopefully. We might have to shift our strategy to a limited number of sorties rather than a full-on invasion. I had to hope that it would be enough. Sandara and Crimson depended on it.

Eleuterio, can you handle Owlbear? We're going to have to hoist him up out of the grotto once we've climbed the rope. Let's go.

There are a large number of Small-sized spears and nothing else of value left behind. Depending on your expectations of grindylows and their feeding habits, it might or might not be relevant to Artevious' speculations that all the sea-goblin bodies are still here too.

In answer regarding healing, "If the Wind and the Waves see fit to grant me the boon, I will have healing available after I pray at dawn."

You withdraw, struggling to keep Owlbear's head above the water. Although it only takes a few minutes, it feels like days before you reach the rope you left hanging in the sinkhole. One by one you scramble back up, then you finally draw Owlbear up as well.

What now?

CG Male Human Swashbuckler 4 | HP: 32/42| AC: 19 (15 Tch, 14 Ff) | CMB: +5, CMD: 20 | F: +3, R: +9, W: +0 | Init: +7 | Perc: +6, SM: -1 | Speed 30ft | Panache: 4/4 | Active conditions: None

I led the group back up the rocky steps to the abandoned stockade. It was the most defensible location we had encountered thus far, had a source of fresh water, and had shade from the oppressive sun. The first thing I set about doing was checking the perimeter for any further surprises like those choking beasts, then did what I could to keep the stinging flies at bay.

Chum, you know a bit about healing, yes? Could you tend to these folks' wounds and make sure that we can heal up as quickly as possible. Evril, Conchobar, and 'Leu, if you can do the same, so much the better. Lads, let's rest up as best we can. We need to be in fighting shape as soon as we're able. Don't forget what's at stake here.

I allowed myself to be bandaged up as well, since I had sustained a number of unpleasant cuts and jabs myself. I hunkered down, trying to think of the kind of setbacks my father had experienced, and all the times he had prevailed.

"Aye, cap'n."

Chum does his best to set up a sick bay, cleaning and bandaging wounds with what little resources are available.

The day passes uneventfully, although the heat and mosquitoes take their toll on your tempers. By the next morning, most of you feel a little better, although Chum's efforts on behalf of the rest of you deprives him of some of the rest you get.

Everyone except Chum gets the benefits of long-term care, getting 4hp back per level and 4 ability points as well. Chum heals 1hp per level and 1 ability point.

Male Half-elf Storm Druid 3; 21/24 hp

Is anyone still suffering from ability damage? Chum can prepare two lesser restorations a day if we need them. I'm tentatively planning to prepare all healing of one type or another with the fights we have had. Once I know what he's prepared, I will dole out what healing the dicebot grants.

Evril and Conchobhar need to make Fort saves.

Male Half-elf Storm Druid 3; 21/24 hp

As part of his care, Chum will prepare resistance and grant each of them a +1 to their save. He could cast Bear's Endurance on them, but I don't think he would think of it...

Conchobhar's Fort save with resistance: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9. Aaaand Conchobhar takes 1d3 ⇒ 3 Dex damage and 1d3 ⇒ 1 Con damage.

Despite Chum's care, Conchobhar awakens the next morning looking distinctly worse for wear, his skin pale, his cheeks hollow.

EDIT: had the wrong ability score for some of the damage Conchobhar took.

Male Half-elf Storm Druid 3; 21/24 hp

Chum will prepare a lesser restoration for him, then. He will also investigate to see if he can determine what the cause is and whether he can alleviate the problem with more care/rest for Conchobhar.

Heal check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Not so much this time, my friend.

Owlbear, for the record, is still unconscious even after the natural healing.

Male Half-elf Storm Druid 3; 21/24 hp

So we are waiting for a Fortitude save with a +1 from Evril.

It appears that Artevious is in the best shape of the group. Eleuterio, Evril, and Chum are in single digits and apparently Owlbear is still in the negatives. I'm unsure of Conchobhar, but I think his ability damage is more pressing, so...
