I laid out 2 plans for several reasons
1. I'm not sure if the Roll20 map can hold two maps.
2. Two battles means allot more work for the Dm, and I would rather not give him extra homework.
3. We aren't sure if Gelik is being held in the spire, but if he isn't we can Dimension door colse enough to the other camp to rescue him if he isn't in the spire.
4. I've never been a fan of splitting the party, but sometimes it's necessary.

1. I can create a second "Campaign" in Roll20 if the party separates.

Sorry to say it guys but I think i'm going to take a break from the game for a little while. I went to redo my spell list for the coming battle last night and my head just isn't in it. I'll be back though. Good luck against the mantis scum.

We have a couple options at this point.

1. We can continue and bring Kieyanna along.

2. We can take a break for a couple months and revisit this.

3. I've been toying with the idea of combining PbP play for the down time situations, and scheduling a Roll20 session on a Saturday or Sunday for major encounters (we can still do small encounters PbP). I probably won't have time for the Roll20 session until September. Let me know what everyone thinks.

We all miss Francis and his pet druid. Let me know what everyone's availability is for September and October. Doing the downtime live over skype, roll20, or some other medium might help speed things up as well. What's everyone else's input on this?

You see reincarnation is totally natural. If the spirit is unwilling that's ok, the DM might let you roll up another character.OOO, how about a fighter/sorcerer/dragon disciple... or a Monk, or something something... SOMETHING! :)

I feel bad whenever a character dies, but I didn't see away around the ambush. I had 3 other choke points setup for ambushes that would have been less organized, but the party decided to walk right down main street to reach their destination. You are attacking the Red Mantis Assassins after all. They knew you were coming. You knew they knew you were coming. Yes, they targeted the two top damage dealers in the party and used the troglodytes as fodder to slow things down and keep you guys in the choke point. They were invisible by potions and spell giving them a +20 to their hide. The only one that had see invisibility cast was Mik. You're 10th Level, we're getting into the realm of save or die situations. This one is a bit earlier than normal, but it's something to think about as the party travels into tougher realms.

That being said, I've personally never considered returning from death unnatural (It's magic CPR or magic defibrillator), but here are your options, and there's time to think about it:

1. Kieyanna can Raise Dead.
2. Jyord can Reincarnate.
** Both 1 and 2 incur negative levels, but it's temporary (ask Mik)
3. Roll up a new character. I'm perfectly OK with this if you want to go this route.
4. I'm open to suggestions.

** Again, I really do feel bad when a character dies. I went over this encounter again and again, but in the end, this was the ambush the Red Mantis would have planned. **

I was going to sugest to Kieyanna that she memorize a Breath of Life spell, It doesn't work aganst death effects, but it might be useful in the future. Also in a situation were breath of life would work Kieyanna could yell out to one of us who can dimension door or dimension hop to get her where she needs to be. remember we aren't restricted to talking only on our turn, and you can talk move and ready an action. the move and readied action would need to be on your turn.

and let us not forget the Ranger is in favored terrain and is probably looking for any sign (a term used for footprints, broken brush, smells, out of place things)and should have been afforded a chance to have seen that. Gunther your being rude. if you were watching the game Eric did make all of us make 3 perception rolls at the start of the mission. He didn't tell us why, but as we were still in camp I assumed that they were to be used at a later time. as for the invisibility, some of it was correct the invisible creature/object must be within 30' to allow the roll. Also there are other modifiers, such as distractions (talking, battle ), distance, and the overwhelming stench of the trogs(there saving throw not withstanding). all of which were in play that would have made the DC approximately 35. now then there is the aposed chek, their stelth check could have been higher,THEY WERE ASSASSINS! and they had acces to some outside magical help. If anyoue should be complaining it should e me, Why didn't I hear the wizard assassin cast TRUE StRIKE, because if I was an assassin I would have cast it using the Silent Spell feat.

*Sigh* That's enough of the bullying and name calling. I got enough of that when I was a kid.

Here's the rule in question: LINK

1. As pointed out as a flat DC20 Perception to notice something is amiss with no modifiers, that would mean a Level 1 Fighter in noisy armor that got his hands on a potion of invisibility would have the same chance of being noticed as an invisible Level 9 Rogue/Ranger/Assassin attempting to quietly track its mark. That's just absurd. That's why there's a whole table of modifiers to go with it. The DC to notice an Invisible stealthing creature is: Stealth Check + 20 (the normal modifier for stealth while invisible). As stated, its an additional +20 to pinpoint exact location.

2. As Griff mentioned, there were perception checks rolled early, and I rolled for the characters as well (check the various DM Screens and you'll see quite a few d20 rolls). I have a notebook of notes of what the order of the rolls are before hand, and record the rolls in order. I do this for 2 reasons; it avoids the ability to metagame, and it moves the game along in the PbP setting (not having to stop and ask everyone to make perception checks every round).

3. As far as Griff's Mental Slap: Yes, I know (and knew at the time) that he could have used that as a reroll attempt. The difference is that this isn't some game put together with random people. This is a 4 year old campaign among friends, people I know and care about. I know Matt, and cheating is the last thing on his mind. I put my trust in my friend above accusing him of cheating. If you think that makes me ignorant, I don't care, and I'm going to leave it as is.

I've put a lot of time and effort into making this designed Adventure Path custom to the players and characters. I miss playing the game face-to-face, and realize this takes some of the personal aspect out of the game, but not for me. Since I moved out here to NC, I use this as one of my only connections back home. I don't want to see it go away. I had an email conversation with Josh, and he seems to disagree with the way I handled this encounter. As I told him my interpretation of the rule and asked for his input, he told me he is opting out. I do ask him to reconsider, but if he doesn't want to that's his choice. I ask for everyone's input, and I spent a good chunk of time on my breaks at work reading forums on the broken screen of my phone, without coming to a different conclusion than my original. I'm always open to hearing different sides to any issue (I hope I've made that apparent to everyone over the years), and am open to change (please don't bring up the ZAO situation again, I know the rules and the exceptions I made didn't throw the game out of balance).

I am prone to mistakes, I've made them plenty of times, and an unfair death can be easily rectified. This is a game. Games are supposed to be fun. The emotions we go through for our characters, the challenging aspects of the game, the gut-wrenching feeling when you're character is just uneffective, the thrill of winning a heroing combat, all the while knowing at anytime your character could die are part of what makes Pathfinder fun for me.

I'm sorry if I took that away from anyone.

Let me point out one more thing if everyone was having fun like you say they are then why are some stepping away from the game and others just flat not returning. Gunther, you're correct this is an open forum, but it has some rules and guidelines to follow. I am not hidding, or talking bigg. You said some things about Eric that upset me and I'm sure him. I didn't read what happened to get you removed from the game. I try not to belittle people, but as always it is a work in progress. If you feel that we need a face to face chat then by all means. If I may say a few things real quick here. Yes, I often consult with my brother and Rob first when it comes to rules and all things pathfinder as they do a pretty good job of letting me know if yes what i'm saying makes sense or no I'm reading things wrong. I do this so that I don't waste Eric's time with frivolous questions or rulings. I emailed Eric so as to prevent trolling on either side and presented my pov (including Griff in my defense.) The GM processed this info and made his ruling and that's what i'm honoring, with the net result that the ruling on the field stands. As I do not know how to role play a dead character and have no real interest in replacing Goro with another character I will be kindly taking my leave.

Eric: I screwed up. I was wondering how my mental slap was an Issue, so I went back and red what I wrote... The mental slap was supposed to be a 1d3 not 1d20. Griff should be dead. I apologies for the screw up, and my visual issues of not proofing every thing I write. If you like I suggest that you re run the encounter from the point we died.

We are not rerunning the encounter! Leave everything as is. If it wasn't someone I knew, I would have questioned it. I meant what I said in that I know that cheating is the last thing on your mind. It was a little weird that it was a d20 you rolled, but I gave you the benefit of the doubt. Just drop it at this point. It's over. No worries.

Edit: BUT from now on, when there's a save to be made, those will be the rolls that come first.

I survived the hot pits and bison, though just narrowly. The train ride back was pretty neat too. Just catching up with the posts.

First off, Josh, you will be truly missed and I wish you would reconsider. If you stand by your decision to drop out of the group, I wish you well and happy adventuring. I hope our paths cross again. I still vote we reincarnate/raise dead Goro and let Josh decide if he wishes to come back as the spell allows.

Second, I never have seen a hint of cheating from Matt and do not believe there was any during this last encounter.
