How long will it take for Grace and Dern to make it to the hallway?

Whoops, sorry - is it only Athletics allowed, or can we use the other two mentioned vs guns in the book? If only Athletics, subtract one.

If I am reading the rules right, it should be athletics for gunfire. If fighting hand to hand you can use fight, guns(Nothing stops a fistfight like guns) or athletics.

You'll certainly be stopped in the lobby unless you do some Burn Notice type stuff, but the elevators are right there. Need to make a few checks to get to the right floor, so...two turns tops?

Male Genetically Engineered Human Biotic Assassin

Need to rely on shields. And then close to let me fight.

Provided I am reading the dice right, I will rule you(Theron) take exactly one hit for 3 damage, this is panic fire and they rolled kinda okay but not so much that anyone should be worried. I believe it is now Hestias turn, then yours, then we switch to the downstairs party

Male Genetically Engineered Human Biotic Assassin

Depends on how big the guns are - my own Pistol is a Weapon 4, so only 2 on the roll would do minimum damage (4). Assuming it's 3, then it's going to vastly (but not completely) deplete my Shield (4)

Human, Genetically Engineered Shields: 4 ☺ ☺ ☻ ☻ Armor: 1 ☺ Stress: 6 ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ ☺ Fate Points: 3

Hestia peeks through the doorway, points at one of the gunman, and attempts to Dominate him.

Dominate: 4d3 - 8 + 5 ⇒ (3, 3, 1, 3) - 8 + 5 = 7

Fair(+2) difficulty, attempting Insidious Dominate. INSIDIOUS DOMINATE Invoke: Until the block is removed or the duration ends, the target takes 1 point of stress damage per exchange, unaffected by barriers, shields, or armor.
Compel: The control of the dominate is such that it takes much of the biotic’s attention to hold. Increase the recharge of all powers while dominate is active by +1.

Duration: 1 exchange per 3 shifts, rounded up. I think this result is 7-2 = 5, rounded up: 2 exchanges. They automatically fight for my side as best they can, without any specific communication from me.

These are pistols, and smallish ones at that. Great for the old base-of-the-skull-retirement, but not much for toe to toe combat.

With a roll like that, his eyes glaze over, and he instantly starts fighting his friends.

Guns: 4d3 - 8 + 5 ⇒ (2, 2, 3, 1) - 8 + 5 = 5

And with a roll like that, one of the men falls over, as a Pistol round is placed into the back of his skull next to the ear, he uses the pistol as it was designed.

What sort of checks?

social ones. Depends on how you want to run it. Slick and smooth? Intimidating and severe?

Male Genetically Engineered Human Biotic Assassin

Theron takes a moment to gather himself, then releases a blast of Biotic energy that grabs the remaining (undominated) gunman down the hall and holds him still.

Stasis: 5 + 1 + 4d3 - 8 ⇒ 5 + 1 + (3, 1, 1, 3) - 8 = 6 (Biotics 5, +1 Amp)

Stasis:

Stasis blocks all actions of a target up to Range: 3 away. This effect will last for a number of exchanges equal to any shifts generated in the initial contest. While in stasis the target’s defense is treated as Mediocre (+0) and they can be attacked, however for every point of damage taken by the target treat as a bonus to overcome the block on their turn.

Block, Fair Difficulty (+2), attempting VULNERABLE STASIS.
Invoke: The target takes +2 damage from the next attack while in stasis.
Compel: Stasis can only affect the target once; the target is then immune for the remainder of the scene.

As they make their way toward the lobby, Grace turns to Dern.

"We don't have much time to work with here-- how do you want to play this?"

A bit loud, perhaps, but this IS an insulated floor...chances are good that noone heard anything.

There are still the 3 goons on the floor, yes? The ones that Theron damaged/stunned?

”Hmm. Even I know that sometimes an artillery blast is a poor choice, as much as it pains me to say. We could rush to the elevators, and I could attempt to hack any technological surveillance on the way. Ordinarily that would not be a terribly effective strategy - and it certainly will not help with any security staff who sees us - but we can hope that security is too concerned with the commotion on the upper floor to notice our presence.”

So in the mooks' turn, the 3 standing guys took their action. Do the guys on the floor take any action, or should we move on?

You can check to see if they are alive, dead, or something in between, or you can leave them where they lay. They don't seem to be moving too much.

Grace nods.

"Let's do it. If anyone says anything... I mean, we are technically ERCS deputies."

She begins to move toward the elevators.

Dern follows dutifully, looking about and scanning for surveillance tech as he goes.

Okay. This is the second time my post didn't post even though I saw it post. Now I have to go with my memory of what I posted and I am frustrated.

Going with Zinnius and Grace here.

The stroll into the building is as casual as it can be when you are a pair of heavily armed agents walking into a civilian building. You attract more than a few looks from passersby, but noone goes screaming for security QUITE yet.

You see the area that the rough looking people from earlier probably went to, but there is a woman there standing at a reception-like standing desk you KNOW wasn't there before.

Spoiler:
Make a Alertness check, otherwise
She gives you an appraising glance but doesn't exactly welcome you. Alternatively, you can go to the more populated reception area with no less than three receptionists, one of whom gives the two of you a weary, professional smile, although
Spoiler:
Make an Alertness check, otherwise
it's clear the weapons make her nervous.

Female Human Soldier

Alertness: 4d3 - 8 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2, 2, 2) - 8 + 2 = 2

Do both reception areas lead to the elevators?

Spoiler:
You can tell the first woman is kind of ignoring you and looking at Zinnius. The second woman is very much unused to weapons in her day to day life. If anyone is going to give you grief its probably her. From what you see now that you are inside there are probabky more elevators throughout the building, but the ones the rough customers from earlier probably used are behind the second woman.

DM Question:

Do these guys look fully human to Hestia?
Awareness: 4d3 - 8 + 2 ⇒ (3, 3, 2, 1) - 8 + 2 = 3

Male Salarian Engineer

Dern, not known for being particularly aware nor socially adept, looks to Grace for queues on how to proceed.

Once we're on our way up, you think you could figure out where to go next, yeah? Might need to hack the elevator to get to a private floor..." she whispers.

The woman draws herself up to her full petite height as the two of you approach.

She seems blandly polite but there is a steel in her eyes that cannot be ignored. She is clearly unarmed unless she is a biotic or something like that.

She only has eyes for Zinnius. You are slowly, sadly becoming more familiar with this kind of Xenophobia. An organization that has problems with aliens would definitely have a woman like this working for them. You are more and more certain that she is some kind of low level agent, possibly very low level. No real way of dealing with this kind of woman without things getting ugly.

"Who is that masked DM? wrote:

Grace puts on her best friendly smile, giving the woman a small wave and doing her level best to appear as non-threatening as possible given the circumstances.

"I'm Deputy Wright, and this," she says, gesturing to her companion, "is Deputy Dern, ERCS Security. We've had some reports of a disturbance on the upper floors, and it would be a big help to us if you'd let us use this elevator."

Grace uses her Rapport skill to Overcome the obstacle:

Rapport: 4d3 - 8 + 3 ⇒ (1, 2, 2, 1) - 8 + 3 = 1

It's the best I've got... at least I have a hard copy of the Fate rules to look through now...

Unfortunately, she quite literally sets her jaw in a way that would make your old DI think she was volunteering for a tour of the grounds.

"I'm sorry, SIR," she says focusing on that last word. "This area is closed for maintenance." Her eyes flick to Zinneus, and you recognize the distaste there, but there's something else there too you can't put your finger on...

Spoiler:
Both of you roll Alertness with a +2 bonus for Zinneus

Spoiler:
You both get it, but in different ways. Grace, you get that she's afraid of Zinneus- but you can't quite get why. You know that fear is at the root of a lot of bigotry, but more or less leave it at that. Zinneus, a memory of yours is tickled- a long, long time ago, when you were working with humans for the first time, you remembered hearing some nonsense story about Salarians visiting earth centuries ago and kidnapping animals and humans for all manner of "experiments", usually just flashing lights and making odd noises and then dumping the confused animal or human in a field and flying off. It struck you as incredibly stupid- but no, what was worse was that this had become part of the human zeitgeist, at least among small minded bigots who believed conspiracy theories. I mean, it's one thing to think that Salarians and Asari secretly control the economy through math and sex, but this is such a far flung theory that it beggars belief. Maybe she is such a person?

”If I may…” Dern steps in. ”One can never be too careful when it comes to security. Have you seen the news feed about Glen Xi - the security expert who uncovered the STG spy ring here on Noveria? I am just as outraged as anyone, after what those monsters did to my family before I fled. Your caution does you credit, madam, and I will be sure to remark upon it.”

Using Non-Linear thought to substitute a Contacts check for Rapport. Invoking “Unlikely hero for the common man” and spending Fate point for a +2 (Invoke: when trying to win the sympathy of ordinary people or humans in particular.)

I- I KNEW it. I KNEW IT! Aliens STOLE MY HUSBANDS JOB! They used their...POWERS on him to STEAL his thoughts!

It's odd. After finding "evidence" of her suspicions, she seems to have almost forgotten that Zinnius is an alien. She speaks animately and excitedly, and her attention is entirely upon him.

Male Salarian Engineer

”I would not put it past them, madam. There was just an article in RealTruth Weekly about brain manipulation. Check it out now, before you forget. My friend and I will be back in a jiffy. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it when I come back down!” Dern says, urging Grace toward the elevators.

Female Human Soldier

Grace nods to the woman as courteously as she can, given the circumstances, while making her way to the elevators as quickly as possible. Once aboard, she turns to Dern, looking grateful.

"I really, really owe you one," she says quietly.

The elevator seems to be automated as there are no buttons or interface, but you ARE going up.

Dern hums along to the elevator music.

The elevator picks up speed and then slows down dramatically. It opens up with a hiss of compressed air- the doors opening vertically not horizontally. There seems to have been a bit of a...disagreement, as there are several dead bodies on the floor. None that you recognize, though. Hestia and Theros are on one side of the floor, trading fire with what looks like 3 men on the other side of the floor. There is a strange man huddling behind your friends.

Grace smoothly takes cover behind a support column and draws a bead on one of the three attackers.

"On my mark."

Does Dern need a round to make an aim maneuver, or can he just start shooting? My plan is to have Grace and Dern take out two of the three simultaneously.
