This is fine, thanks. I'll wait for someone else to make a decision being new to the group and all. However, Lucius is a learned man and wants/craves information so he would rather exhaust the research options before moving on.

@ Lucius - while you have a great desire to understand and research unusual situations, such as the one you are in, you also understand the significance of the time crunch you are in. Sleeping in the asylum and / or fog will result in terrible dreams - and dreams seem to be the reason behind many of the bizarre events - including patients and staff morphing into ghouls or worse.

Just wanted to be sure you understand the situation.

Got it. Just trying to stay within character. Lucius first and foremost way of solving problems is to think his way out of them but he'll soon realize that action is needed if no progress is being made.

So what do the other folks want to do?

Trevor keeps watch and reads some, writes 'All work and no play makes Trevor a dull boy' in various places.

First, the results of the first 8 hrs of research.

This place is Briarstone Asylum. Founded a hundred or so years ago by Count Haserton Lowls I (his great grandson is someone you have heard about - Count Haserlon Lowls IV).

They utilize modern scientific methods to humanely treat mental illness. Most physical and surgical treatment methods were phased out years ago, with the exception of restraints.

The place was originally built to be a fort, on an island in the middle of a large river, but construction was plagued by accidents, culminating in the death of the overseer Captain Anoch Atherton. To expunge the islan, Count Lowls I convinced the Church of Pharasma to perform a island wide exorcism.

The Professor learns that something of other dimensions seem to be leaking into this area, but does not know why - perhaps the dimensional boundaries are weak here?

"Hmm, ghosts... That church of Pharasma is a screwy bunch, can't do anything right."

"I've got this holy symbol, who was the Pharasma worshipper?"

"We should consider that in order to defeat ghosts, we will need magic weapons. We've found several, including silversheen and ways to align weapons, that's not good that the doctor thought they needed those. Professor, what kind of common threats might we need those against? Trevor, you should hang onto these silver and alignment to put on your hammer."

After spending a good eight-hours trying not to laugh at Trevor writing his silly stuff all over the place, Lucius was not really that much closer to thinking his way out of this one.

It was time to move on and find more clues.

He adjusted his glasses, "Well now that we know this is an asylum, we can rule out me being a patient here. My expertise was probably sought up with regards to a tough case. Or something like that."

He turned to his companions, "So other than what Jean-Philippe mentioned, this place is being strongly influenced by another dimension. Don't know which plane or how but it just is."

He looked at where to go next, "How about we head straight east and see what's on the other side of the narrow hallway? If we find nothing there then we can backtrack and check out the room in the southeast corner of this asylum."

As they walk back, he muses that this is a modern facility, using modern techniques, and the problem appears to have come from without; so they should concentrate on the book and the "benefactor" and their interaction with that patient and the island itself. Clearly something is off here that might predate the asylum.

Just so you know, there is more info to be gained with more 8 hr segments of research.

It is probably about 6p, although it is hard to tell in the fog. I am going to assume everyone rested a bit (at least to catch up sleep / stave off exhaustion) when you went back to the chapel area.

You make to the entrance hall with no issues. The white tiled expanse is as you remember it. Yellow fog roils up against the windows, as if trying to gain entrance to the hall.

(you are in the area of the map circled green. What do you do? There are two doors).

Lucius looks towards his companions and points to the southeast doors, "Let's figure out what's in this area, shall we?"

The professor expertly checks the doors for any traps and takes out his tools in case they are needed.

How about south? But if you want to go southeast, that is fine.

Which door?

There is a set of large double doors in the middle of the south, leading straight outside.

There is a door on the south wall, toward the east.

There is a door on the east wall, north end.

Just curious... what's up with the 4th player? On vacation?

Yep, the fourth player is on vacation and out of town. He posted that last week late.

The double doors lead outside into the yellow fog. Peering through the glass, you see disturbing shapes moving in the mist. It would be a BAD idea to go out there, as you recall Winter telling you.

Are you sure? I don't want to metagame this but it looks like it leads to a closed in area. we're talking about the double doors directly south of the green circle you drew in your map, right?

You're killing me, Smalls.

OK, I did the map for you to go into the eastern door on the south wall, so that is what we are doing.

As though it had been picked from the halls of some warm country estate, this room is filled with comfortable furnishings, a hearth ready for a fire, artwork populated by picnicking families, and a mansion-shaped cage with colorful taxidermic birds inside. Large windows once might have looked out over colorful flowerbeds, but now only show yellow mist. A battered corpse is impaled on the antlers of a stuffed elk head hung above the hearth.

Lucius was feeling very comfortable with the plush surroundings until he saw the corpse.

Quickly taking out his pistol, he waited to see if the thing would come to life or unlife or whatever and come after them.

assume nothing happens...

The professor went about searching for clues as to how to get out of here while he eyed the yellow mist mist outside the window and dreaded another night of nightmares.

Lucius reaches the middle of the room when the birds in the cage begin so sing, a sweet song that reminds you of spring time, and blooming flowers, and gentle rainshowers.

Lucius smiles as the corpse does not come to life and the birds begin to sing, "Well, at least something is going right in this place."

With many zoology lectures under his belt, he asked, "Tell me, what does the singing remind you of? Robins or bluejays?"

The birds are alive? Huh, thought they would be dead since all the nasty stuff that has been going on. Maybe it is a magic birdcage that feeds and cleans them.

male Human? pbp GM / 1 current map ; second floor

The birds appear to be stuffed (taxidermy - stuffed). NOT alive. But singing and chirping away.

Lucius loses himself for a moment in the song before he focuses his mind, then notices he was floating a few inches above the carpet as he falls back down.

Now that he is in the room, he notes another body behind a couch (beaten and bloody from what he can see from the middle of the room).

I am assuming JP and Trevor are still in the doorway. Lucius is in the middle of the room.

Some sort of magical effects are radiating from the corpses as well - transmutation again, and conjuration also.

The magic fades from the room as Lucius makes it to the door.

All of you stand clustered at the door. No birds sing anymore.

Searching the bodies, you find that they are cultists wearing bedsheets stained yellow, as did the others.

They each have a magic amulet, and a hypodermic with a large steel needle, along with a total of 4 cure light wounds injections.

The room looks like a comfortable room to have a conversation, but nothing else of value appears to be here.

There is a door on the east wall. Wiping condensation from the glass, you see a path of flagstones leading off into the fog.

The fog does appear much thinner over the flagstone path.

(as a note, the other two doors that show in the other room on the east wall appear to be blocked with debris and cannot be opened)

The path is circled in green on the map.
